Love the concise review... that last note about them just being "tools" so as not to make an impulse buy was a sobering one. Good stuff.
But the preamble -- that they're somehow "too expensive" compared to previous MacBook Pros -- is bogus.
@@godofbiscuitssf I agree with that. If you look at comparisons on Dell XPS' and Alienwares, Razer Blades, and what not. All the same price. So, I really do think that "Too expensive" labeling needs to go away. For what you get it's not. No laptop display comes close to these machines.
@@jonathansacci2325 If you need really long battery life combined with an excellent display then yes, these are the best on the market and so the price is justified. If you need xcode then you don't really have a choice and you just need to bite the bullet get the spec you need to do your work.
But for many uses, like non-ios software development, these laptops are not great value for money once you consider the non-base models. Which you will since 16GB is not enough these days. Even premium laptops like XPS are much cheaper on higher specced configs (at least in my part of the world) and if you're OK with something like the Asus G15 you're even better off.
Loved that ‘tools’ remark!

I’ve bought the 16” version and I absolutely love it. First MBP was bought in 2015, second the touch bar model in 2018. 2015 model felt like a tank, a real professional tool, loved it. 2018 Touch Bar model was really nice, but had lost the “tank like feel”, felt flimsy and I hated the keyboard. This is a real return to what a MBP should be, an absolute tank of a machine that you can depend on. I’m a web developer so don’t need blistering performance, I just need a workhorse. The MagSafe charging is a real unexpected bonus, one of the USB ports broke on my touch bar model. This feels like it’s been designed by engineers, not designers. (No offence to designers, design is very important).
"This feels like it’s been designed by engineers, not designers." Me, as a web developer I can almost relate to this as well haha! Some designs are obviously beautiful, but it comes with a cost, sometimes huge, not necessarily functional. Can't wait to get my hands on this.

Very nice review Dave!
You shouldn't buy that tool yourself, your company should.
I mean... at least there's 2 weeks to regret a purchase and return to apple.
No hate on Apple. Just the majority of people wouldn't need this laptop. Even tech enthusiasts don't need it. You buy the new laptops if 1) you have money to burn and you like Apple 2) you need the laptop as a tool for work.
@@TheFreezeChill Agreed. If it's for professionals, their employers will see to it they have the 'necessary tools' for their professional work. The only other professionals who may not have anyone to sponsor a Macbook Pro would be Freelancers.
@@Sunny-ot1vo If you HAVE to get one and don't really need it then at least get the lowest/cheapest spec would be my advice. If someone just wants an apple laptop to browse, chat to people and as an all round daily then the cheapest will still be more than enough for anyone to use and you're not breaking the bank like a $6000 laptop would. Each to their own i guess.

Glad Dave mentioned "Most people don't need it", we need more tech reviewers like you making sensible suggestions instead of pushing people to the newest and greatest. I have seen so many people with top end MBPs but use them like Chromebooks.
"-so many people with top end MBPs but use them like Chromebooks." that hurts my tech-geek core. Haha But, in all honesty, even for myself, I think I wouldn't really benefit from having so many GPUs like there are for these new MacBooks. My current workflow is with Microsoft Word, Edge (using Windows at the moment), and some photo work with PowerPoint (very basic poster work). Personally, I think I'd just want this for gaming, if ever MacBooks can be wholly supported for gaming (but seeing Overwatch playing at 120 FPS is just nuts!).
Sooo truee...
This sums up my brother. I have 2 M1 Macbook Airs and gave him one. I use mine for coding and admin stuff...he uses it as a Chromebook.
The problem is these things have a way better screen (mini-LED, 120HZ, 1000 nits). That would really tempt me to step up to the Pro when all I'd really need is the Air.
@@GoldGiggler After watching this when he compared real game I think windows laptops are still best for gaming, M1 Max doesn't even beat 3060 properly, but costs like 2-3 times more.
These new macs have an amazing screen, power efficiency and are ultra quiet, but the price tag is HUGE.
I was hoping that this M1 Max would perform at 3080 level as apple claimed (even in games) so I can grab one and even price tag would be not as bad at this point, but its not, so I think Ill stick with something like M16 for more than half the price.

I do sometimes feel the need to upgrade, especially if I'm making a large photoshop project, or exporting 100 Tiff files or making a crazy experimental song, but that just doesn't happen enough, and it doesn't impede my life enough to make it worth the upgrade.
