  • After three months, 20,000 photos, and more than our share of hurdles (especially finding parts), we’ve completed another Redline Rebuild time-lapse video. This time around, Hagerty’s Davin Reckow tackles a two-wheel project, a bit of a Frankenstein bike with the heart of a 1957 Harley-Davidson XL Sportster. No seriously, its engine is an ironhead V-twin from a first-year Sportster. So strap on your helmet because we’re about to speed things up a bit.
    Part 2: • Classic Harley-Davidso...

Once you know the parts and where they go, 99% of engines follow the same or similar formula. They're not as complicated as they seem.

if you do it the first time, it's a bit like putting together a puzzle, most components just fit in a specific place and only the right way around, you can't put them in wrong. A clean and tidy workspace, preferably big enough to lay down the parts in the order you took it apart, makes the job much easier too. The only really difficult part of putting it back together is torquing everything the right amount and in the right order.

Discovered this channel a while ago and forgot how enjoyable it is whether it be about a Harley or any other motorcycle.
You sir are doing superb work. You stated on the Sportster rebuild the original cast Pistons were failure prone due to cast Pistons. Did you replace them with something more durable? You must have spent days on the phone and Internet looking for parts. But though I am 67 and can remember the first time I saw one outside the showroom was when the kid took delivery of the bike. His first Harley and he saved every fricken dime, Nickle, and penny to buy it. Worked at a small independent Harley dealer one owner three employees. He was paid $1.65 an hour in 1957 and it took three years of saving every penny he could. Half the bike was paid by CoCa-Cola by returning bottles for the $.02 cent deposit for each bottle. Everyone laughed at him until he got the bike paid in full. First mod was to paint in red the name CoCa-Cola Fired on both sides, in October, 1958 he was drafted and wound up in the U. S. Army and served 9 months in Germany where he died in a traffic accident off duty. I was 8 years old when he died and it still hurts to this day even though he was 11 years older than me. To me he was the nicest guy I ever met and would answer all my questions about engines and bikes. Never saw him get mad and throw a wrench though he said the wrench was trying to escape his hand at times.
His mother still has the bike sitting in her basement and for some reason called me back in 88 when she walked up to me and asked if I was little Jimmy which was what her son called me and I'd hand him tools and run to the store for Cokes.
I talked with her about her son Joe until we realized we had been sitting on the bench in front of the store for over 3 hours. I was shocked when she said she still had the bike and even more when she said I could see it. After three weeks of cleaning and polishing it looks like the day he rode it out of his bosses shop brand new. I won't start it even though she said I could, it's got drag pipes on it and I don't think her ears could stand it at her age. I asked he what she plans to do with it and she told me I'll find out when she dies. There were other kids who hung around his garage when he was polishing the bike or working on it but the mothers would freak out and drag there kids back home not wanting them influenced by the " bad biker " living here. My mom thought after she met him that he was fine but mom was the only one to do so. I've got a bad left knee from a bike accident in 76 the other knee went bad a few years ago and 5 stainless steel screws in my left foot. If by some miracle I get the Sportster I will get ridden by me once on its final trip by going back home to the factory in Milwaukee to become part of the factory museum with the story of its history engraved in Brass.
The ole Lady still walks 5 miles every day and I think will outlive me. She tried to give the bike to me several years ago but I refused because I could see in her eyes she didn't mean it.
It still sits in her basement.
Thank you for bring back the sight and sound of a Sportster getting restored and if you ever offer the 20,000 pictures with a narration in realtime on DVD I will order a set.
    Thank you.
    Note:
I as requested will not tell anyone where the bike is so save your breath. I if necessary will take it to my grave.

Justin bustin Mechanics hate two-strokes because the owners do their own rebuilds in an afternoon over a six pack and leftover pizza, leaving the mechanic with no income. lol.

Much as I hate Harley's this is one of the best rebuild vids I have ever seen.
I love how they do a spotless meticulous job, yet the shop is a mess. I can certainly relate.
