Inside Ellen Pompeo’s Midcentury Malibu Beach House | Open Door | Architectural Digest

- Today Architectural Digest is welcomed to Malibu by Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo for a tour of her inviting mid-century beach house. Pompeo first went to scope out the property several years earlier, when the house was originally up for sale and Grey’s was still in its infancy. “I knew I couldn’t afford it, but I didn’t tell anyone that,” she confesses. When the house came back on the market in 2013, she seized the second chance. As her fans know, Pompeo is a bona fide interior-design enthusiast whose past renovations include a modern barn in Sag Harbor and her main residence, a 1920s Mediterranean-style villa in Los Angeles. The addition of her Malibu home has only added fuel to the fire. “I am entering a very exciting phase of my life, if I do say so myself.”

I like how she mentioned the ocean environment destroyed the old house so she pretty much had to rebuild from the start. Didnt realize that happened though i know they have to repaint bridges over oceans constantly cause of the corrosion.

This is my favorite episode I have ever seen. She is so relatable and real. Granted she is a rich celebrity, she comes off like a mom showing her home. Not a snob showing off. I love her beautiful home!

This is really what design is about. Not just how things look but how they work for your family. So this is honestly perfect.
Honestly- this has been one of my favourite episodes. So much personality in the details. Ellen Pompeo's curated choices and story telling really make it feel so personable and lived in. Very refreshing to see so much colour!!

I LOVE this house. Especially the guest room with all of the black representation and impactful moments they’ve had throughout history. She really seems to love her children so much 🥹

I love how honest she was about things like the heating issue with the marble tub - something I never considered and will definitely keep in mind for future decisions. Also underlines that she actually lives in and uses all parts of her house - I loved this (and her)!
I’m so glad Ellen showed the kids space because most of these home tours leave out the kids spaces. They are so important in facilitating imaginations and playtime. Very cool layout and views!
Most of them don’t show their kids’ rooms out of privacy.

@@TheNerdistheWord The master bathroom is the space of adults, who can decide for themselves whether and how this private space is shown on the internet. i doubt that the children here could decide for themselves or that they are aware of the extent of this decision (and for example how many people, see this video)... The privacy of a child is always more important than the interest of outsiders in Interiour.
@@nobody___knows I could understand the argument if there was anything revealing about the children’s room like photos of them hanging or the children themselves. But it’s just a fairly basic room for her kids on the weekend.

I so respect Ellen’s intentional representation of Black art and creativity in her home for her children’s cultural development. The house is a whole vibe😎 Beautiful!
I do love the historic photos, yeah. I did find it a bit interesting she didn't seem to feel any need to also teach her kids about the other half of their history, since half of their family and ancestors are european, but that may be just the reality of being mixed race in the US. She may just feel like her kids will already learn plenty about that side of their history everywhere they go?

Can we talk about the DYNAMIC DESIGN DUO OF ELLEN AND MARTIN???!!! EVERY SINGLE TIME these two work together on her homes, they knock it STRAIGHT OUTTA THE BALLPARK!!!!!!! Waiting on a coffee table book from these two on the homes that he's done with her!
Love that Ellen used the term “primary bedroom.” She is the definition of what good looks like as an ally.

This is by far my favorite house of all. So much elegance and class mixed in with warm and very comfortable vibes. My all time favorite.
The most detailed house tour I've ever scene. She's so involved in the formation/renovation of her house, her love makes it a home.

Love the exuberant use of color. It would have been so easy to fall back on the monochromatic beach look but she didn’t and it’s glorious!
the part where Ellen "banishes" her kids to sit on the 3 chairs with that ocean view to curb their social media usage made me laugh. Wonderful actress and sad to know she's leaving Grey's but excited to see her next projects. =)

This is the most down to earth celebrity AD home interview I've seen.
I love everything about this house- exterior design, interior furnishings and decor. I think it's especially noteworthy that it's not what you'd typically expect from a California beach house- mid century structure with a lot of dark, rich colors.
I LOVED this episode! I love how intentional Ellen and Martin were with their use of both materials and color. Also, Ellen's commentary and easy-going personality made it so pleasant to watch ❤
Ellen Pompeo is in a class by herself. For someone so incredibly wealthy & successful in her career her way of being is so grounded & down-to-earth that it blows my mind as to how she happens to have accomplished this feat. I watched her recently on Actors & Actors with Katherine H. & again, EP's no-nonsense, earthy-grounded perspective & way of being was incandescently inspiring.

A stunning home! I feel like it is relatable, a home that is well loved and actually lived in. I love how she incorporates black history and photography. She definitely beams when talking about her family. Ellen is pure loveliness.
The way she said " l have black children," instead of 'mixed children' just made my heart so happy! She knows who they are and isn't afraid to sugar-coat it. I love her so much!
I ask this in a genuine, and hopefully respectful way, but why is saying 'black children' preferable to saying 'mixed children', when the mother is white?
Both are true...they are black, and they are mixed.
@@Mrs.Currie Because in society today, being mixed is always looked at as “better” than black children. For her to say my “black” kids signifies she sees their race as both and not just the white side as opposed to other white mothers with mixed children.
