Today I took a look at the story of Casey from TLC’s “Family By The Ton”, a show dedicated to following the journey of a real family’s weight loss. Honestly, I’m not a fan of the title of this show, but I decided to press on anyway and see if there was anything valuable to discuss. At his heaviest, Casey weighed 845 pounds and almost never left his father’s house where he stayed in bed and played video games all day. Today, Casey is employed, living on his own, and weighs under 300 pounds. His journey is nothing short of incredible, due in part to a supportive family, a strong medical team, bariatric surgery, and a commitment to improving his quality of life. Go, Casey!

So far it's pretty spot on, I appreciate the honesty and professionalism. To hear someone speak from a medical standpoint it's easier to take in criticisms and I really appreciate him explaining everything out to help others understand the mindset and how things are. It wasn't a fun life, I was miserable, the whole jounrey has been insane and crazy to apart of. I appreciate Dr. Mike for putting this out there, shouting my channel out in the bio, talking on how I'm doing now and everything. This was a really great watch, thanks everyone for the love and support and thanks again Dr. Mike

      @nataliaalfonso2662 3 роки тому +853

The whole "fatphobia" thing is super scary to me.
It's a health risk! When we ask for rights for disabled people or the chronicallynill or awareness of a disease, like all the ailments I have, it's because we want people to take it SERIOUSLY.
I don't deserve less rights than someone because I have a faulty heart!
.but I need my doctors to tell me IMMEDIATELY if something is unhealthy for me!
.and yet somehow the very positive movement for body acceptance and to shy away from fat shaming has turned to something DARK.
Where people aren't supposed to mention all the associated health risks with obesity?
I've never been above a 25 BMI and yet I'm told IMMEDIATELY when I get close to that I have to lose weight.
      .because it's for my HEALTH.
But we're not supposed to tell someone the health risks of being obese? .
Someone who smokes cigarettes had the same right to life liberty and happiness as I do.
But we sure as hell tell them it's unhealthy.
Same with sunbathing! The most natural thing in the world became suprmeelt dangerous due to thebozone layer, and now we would shake anyone who refused to wear SPF.
So what is it about obesity where the person cannot handle being told the truth?

I think your perspective is kind and trauma/eating disorder-informed. Having a trauma-informed doctor is extremely valuable especially in the weight-loss process. We are so cruel to morbidly obese people that there's a lot of extra baggage and sensitivity that comes with weight loss even for those who aren't obese. Thank you for taking a compassionate and modern approach to weight loss. If only most doctors stayed updated on trauma-informed health.

I've been trying to lose weight for a few months now, eating a balanced diet, less sugar, more fruits/veggies, more proteins, more homecooked meals, going to the gym 3 times a week... and nothing had happened yet. Sometimes I feel very discouraged and want to cry, because obviously when you're trying to change and make efforts, you can't help hoping to see some kind of results. Once a friend told me "look, you have a healthier lifestyle and more energy, that's a change, and you did that by yourself. Nobody's cooking for you, or exercising for you, you should be proud". Made me feel a bit better. Efforts are never meaningless and useless, the minute you take the first step, you should be proud indeed.

I had a neck injury which required significant rehab. It was incredibly frustrating learning to crawl again (I had neurological locomotion problems). My PT took videos every week, and she showed me them when I would swear and rage about how useless the whole process was. Usually when I'd just moved the wrong limb for the 20th time in a row or moved my weight so I landed face-first on the mat. In those moments I couldn't see any progress, so watching the video clips was this great reminder of the fact I was getting better, I'd gone from there to here in a week, a month. The motivation came not from knowing i could improve, but seeing how I had improved.

Teaching people that they don’t need to be depressed over their body, isn’t enabling them to continue, it’s letting them know that they shouldn’t work themselves up over their weight, but slowly start making steps to lose weight gradually

You got real bro and laid it down. I read a book once called No Excuses. I was about no matter what happens in life you can choose how that incident affects you (within reason) and how you live your next day. I feel this is the leading cause of my depression because I keep moving and fighting. This boils over though because there are times I don't know why I fight. Even though I know I fight for my family causing a disconnect from them because they are family but the same reason why I hurt. I have numerous pre existing conditions including horrible GI issues. What I like about Dr. Mike is that he, and the medical teams he shows, actually puts in the TIME necessary to properly diagnose the medical issues. All the doctors I have been to only do routine tests and then throw me out and tell me to go to someone else. I was actually thrown out of a nutritionists office after following her diet to the letter but didn't lose enough weight. She said she couldn't help me and I needed to go to a doctor! The last doctor I went to this week was suggesting bariatric surgery BEFORE doing anything else! She's skipping right to the 'last resort.' And I don't want that. With my GI issues, I think I'm asking for trouble with that surgery. Plus I don't think I'm heavy enough that it requires such a drastic measure!

People think if you call someone fat you’re fatphobic. Absolutely horrible what some people in Gen Z do nowadays. Trigger warnings for food 😂.

It is very refreshing to see you explain things in a noncritical way. Thank you for looking at this and seeing a person not just a obese case. ❤

I have to say, the fact that the 700 pound patient is 1) still able and willing to walk, and 2) is willing to take the steps to changing his life, are really excellent to see.

He’s so nice, he never actually calls someone “fat” it’s just “obese” or “larger structure” it’s so nice of him.

@Whymsical Joy obese is a medical term, and fat is fat, everyone has it, but if you have excess you ARE fat, I am larger, 6'2 260. People should be held responsible for their wellbeing as a physically healthy country is a mentally healthy country

Just discovered you! I’m quite overweight. And I wanna say thank you for giving positive reinforcement and helpful notes. I’m used to having immature kids telling me I’m lazy

I cannot express how much I appreciate your channel and your input. Being overweight myself for the majority of my life I have struggled forever. I do sometimes hate going to the doctors because it is always a conversation. 2 years ago I lost 80lbs and physically felt amazing but even going into my doctor I was told how much more I could do to continue the weight loss. Unfortunately my weight loss was depression induced and now I’m struggling to find balance. Anyways, all that to say thank you.
