I had pregnancy-induced pica due to anemia! I wasn't getting enough iron anymore and I would get INTENSE cravings to eat sand. I remember the first time it happened. I was looking out of my apartment window down at the courtyard in front and there was a sandbox set up for the kids living in the complex... and I just got this sudden intense craving to go downstairs and eat a fistful of the sand. I used to surf, so I know what taking a mouthful of sand feels and tastes like, and my mind was recreating it like "ooo yum wouldn't it be SO fun to feel that gritty CRUNCH between your teeth?" I immediately called my OB/GYN who had me come in right then. Even worse? He had a cactus garden outside his office FULL of sand and I had to physically restrain myself from going and eating the sand. @KT-Kaboom It's amazing how much a brain can change while pregnant. I'm sure the doc hooked you up with some supplements that hopefully curbed those cravings. I just can't imagine how sad that first woman was to find comfort in the corn starch, but if her emotional joy was connected to that craving it's understandable. I'm a mental health therapist and have an eating disorder myself and am just as frustrated (at least) as Dr. Mike is with these "professionals." The thing that stands out to me and bothers me so much is how it seems like they're casting a moral judgment on these people and shaming them, when food is morally neutral. It has nothing to do with being a good person, being a smart person, etc. They need compassionate and nonjudgmental help, just like someone with any other medical issue. And, I fear that having this type of experience of feeling shamed could turn them off to therapy and prevent them from getting help in the future.
thats exactly it. I am working toward becoming a therapist myself and in my mind this so harmful to the individuals that sign a contract to be on tv but do they know that they are going to be shown in a negative light. To me this is sooo scummy and frankly unethical in so many ways.
@Alrune18 Yes, I feel like it's unethical for any helping professional to treat someone seeking help in that manner (with shame tactics and the judgmental tones), and definitely doing so with a large audience just adds to it, even with any signed agreements. I don't know how informed the participants were or weren't about everything, but I think it's the responsibility of any licensed professional to act ethically, cameras or not, period. That's why it gets kind of icky for me using people's problems and treatment for entertainment. When the entertainment starts to be prioritized over everything else, it becomes exploitative. But I think there can be good ways of doing it, if it's focused on the education part and displaying issues that need visibility.
I'm an eating disorder therapist and in recovery myself. It was these kinds of shows that made me think "well at least I'm not that crazy" and kept me sick so much longer. It's so harmful the way they approach these issues like they're a spectacle or a freak show. Dr. Mike, your commentary is spot-on.
@kindlestix8079 nah he said not enough like that's the issue when in reality the problem is psychological. So he was being sarcastic as that would likely feed into the problem🤣🤣 anyway I misunderstood the comment but I was just wondering what his patients and him were going through.
I come from a family of maple producers and Dr. Mike’s description of how maple syrup is made was hilarious 😂 It doesn’t just flow out of the trees, it’s made by boiling down the tree sap (which looks and tastes like sugar water) for hours. The “maple syrup” the guy was eating was essentially just corn syrup- not some hyper-processed version of the real thing.
In Quebec they call that type of false maple syrup by "sirop de poteaux" like "poles syrup" in English. It's so sad that a majority of people think of that type of syrup as real maple syrup...
Yeah the stuff he's eating is literally high fructose corn syrup with some artificially created "flavorants" in a lab. Not a singular part of it is in any way related even to maple syrup. Even the taste is manufactured in a lab.
I can't believe they brought the guy in to look at Mikey and say "imagine living like him" as if he isn't sitting right there. I know they said the doctor is a mental health specialist but is his specialty making everyone's mental health worse? Not only has the scared straight approach been proven ineffective but they're also causing harm to Mikey.
Dr. Mike I don't know if you've ever reacted to Supersize Vs. Superskinny, but a lot of episodes are available on UA-cam and it shows the extreme ends of unhealthy diets and disordered eating for both over and under weight people. Really interesting in terms of physical and mental health.
one of my favorite youtubers, luxeria, reacts to that show and it's really grotesque how they try to shock the participants with their eating habits. if doctor mike thinks this show is bad with their tub of corn starch oobleck, wait'll he sees that show dump each participant's daily food (or nicotine) intake into one giant tube slurry.
at the 12:45 when they said to trash all that syrup... Imagine a better idea where you serve it to 5000 people with pancakes, that's a much better impact of how much one person is over consuming
I wore my Dr Mike merch to a brain MRI the other day and the radiologist was very jealous and commented on how much he loves you several times ❤ I’m in Melbourne, Australia btw
Your mindset as a doctor is so refreshing. It’s so rare to see someone, especially a doctor, talk about a patient with so much empathy and understanding. These shows get views because I feel like people just love watching others berate people who are dealing with obesity or psychological issues. Thank you for the difference you make in calling these things out and standing up for the patient!
Thank you Dr. Mike for calling them scumbags for their rhetoric. You’re doing a wonderful service reminding people like me that love is more productive than hate. I feel less alone and more optimistic ❤
Shaming people to change their behavior can backfire big time. They’re made to feel guilty about it, and that could lead them to do MORE of what they’re doing.
So relieved to see a doctor saying that's not okay ! Since as a child I've come accross those videos I always felt like they were taken advantage of + treated poorly. Also thank you so much for speaking about doctors creating body dysmorphia and ED in their patients because of those kind of talking ❤️😞
They are so ignorant to these poor people who probably suffer mentally like dr.mike said. They are shaming them, showing them instead of telling them nicely, sort of blaming the person. I feel so bad for those people.
Yeah it is sad. I’ve known a lot of therapists and had a few, and none of them talk in this way to a patient. Reinforcing shame in someone seems like it would strengthen the severity of their disordered eating. Dr. Mike was right to say that a true professional would be empathetic and try to understand why the person is behaving the way they are, why it’s comforting to them, find a way to heal what’s underneath.
@@현현이-x8hif shaming worked better than counting calories... @@Mster_J Oh I realize it’s scripted out that way. It’s just crazy to me that you have people with certifications brought onto the show who actually have knowledge and skills to help, and yet they act like this, against their training and judgment, just for entertainment. It’s hurtful because it gives the public the wrong idea about what to expect if they were to go see a therapist. So many people avoid therapy when they could be helped, because they fear judgment or change. I wish there were shows where people could see how therapy really works and the beauty of understanding behavior and being a supportive and active listener to help people feel good again.
I had written up a whole thing that was a bit too mean and deleted it. Suffice it to say that as someone with multiple eating disorders who is mentally disabled and currently too poor to afford more than one meal a day and seeing the sorry state of food pantries in America, I'm very full of rage at this show. Thank you Dr.Mike for standing up for those of us in fragile areas of life and spreading positivity and knowledge to the world.
I could not agree more, i went through a severe bout of gastritis through which i could barely eat, now I've developed an eating disorder and have very few things i can eat, at first it was just chicken yakisoba and chicken and vegetable dumplings then i worked myself up to chicken and turkey wraps, beef stroganoff, cheese pizza (no more pepperoni or uncured hams or meats or ham in general) and one of things i was happiest about was spaghetti, i missed it dearly, i can eat a lot more now than i was eating during the 7+ months i was super sick and it's still ongoing. While i am able to eat more than i was I'm also incredibly financially low and all our ssi goes to bills mainly and our EBT doesn't last long cause we get about $270 ish a month and we get it nearly at the end of each month for two. In the economy. Thankfully aldis and krogers and dollar trees exist but it's still hard and most days I'm eating mainly soup and occasionally dumplings, when we get the ebt we buy lots of chicken and ingredients mainly which last a while due to the ability to freeze things but I'm struggling to get my weight back up which dropped from 110 lbs to 95 lbs, it kinda floats in between those two but I can't get it back over 100, for context I'm 18 soon to be 19 so 95 ish isn't great and i so badly want to being my weight back up but eating is hard If i dealt with another person like this i would probably go off on them too, the last girl wasn't even morbidly obese as she put it, she was super gorgeous and you could just see her self confidence draining from her as that lady droned on 😒 food pantries just give us junk, you can't trust the food unless it's canned and even then it's iffy. Lots of dates and nuts and frozen blueberries and stuff we physically can't eat so we take it up to our library to donate it to anyone else who needs it and can eat it

I used to watch shows like this as a preteen and teenager, attempting to shame myself out of obesity. All it did was contribute to my developing body dysmorphic disorder. Thank you Dr. Mike for bringing attention to the fact that shaming patients (or shaming yourself) doesn't bring about positive, long-lasting change. I sincerely, genuinely hope the medical professionals on this show have had some reeducation for the benefit of their patients.
"Certified Nutrition" "Expert"?? I don't think that is a thing. A DIETITIAN is certified, not a Certified Nutrition Expert. No DIETITIAN would shame a patient on TV, at least any that wanted to keep her license.
The number one thing I love about Dr. Mike, is the fact he's honest and puts other Doctors 'in their place' when they're talking nonsense, instead of just blindly agreeing with them because they share the same titles! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
GOD THE DIETICIAN ON THIS SHOW PISSES ME OFF. She just has this subtle, malice sense of superiority about in the way she talks to people about food and exercise. I guess if that lady had actually had her morals and ethics regarding her job in order she wouldn't have said yes to working on the show in the first place. They were pretty much *only* going to get this kind of person to agree to talk to and treat people the way that a show called "Freaky Eaters" would.
I don't think she's even a dietitian. Dietitians have to be specially licensed, whereas nutritionists and "nutrition specialists" are terms that pretty much anyone can call themselves.
@@amyill9280 You are exactly right! A registered dietician has to get a masters degree that includes a mix of didactic work and clinicals before they can become licensed. Any ding dong out there can call themselves a "nutritionist".

At 16:23 she says "I don't even know how that got there" and she sounds like she genuinely was confused. This probably means the producers are purposefully planting stuff for the "specialists" to pull out from her purse and humiliate her, or if she had happened to find it before they did, they could have "caught" her eating it. I won't be surprised if they did this to the lady who had the cornstarch addiction.
Once again, hitting the nail on the head in this video, Doc! These types of life improvement shows aren’t helping people while also being interesting and entertaining, they’re exploitative entertainment under the pretence of helping people. And the fact it’s the mentally and physically unwell that get roped into being made spectacles just makes it even more infuriating. It’s a modern day version of the carnival freak shows!

The only maple syrup shown in this entire video was in Dr. Mike's team's edit when he commented on "quality maple syrup." I'd bet a lot of money that there was 0% maple syrup in any of those other bottles.
Dear Dr Mike, As a little girl, I started drinking salt and vinegar over ice whenever I got the craving. By the time I was a teenager, I'd add lemons and salt to the mix. In my 20's it was: salt and vinegar over ice, lemons and salt, salt and vinegar with packets and packets of tomatoes as well as tomato juice, salt and vinegar (no alcohol). This carried on until age 40, when I had a perforated ulcer and nearly died. I never told the doctor about this because I enjoyed drinking all these things. But it damn sure caught up with me later.
Lemons with salt was a major pregnancy craving of mine, 10 years later I occasionally indulge when I get a lemon in my water at a restaurant. But I’d be lying if sometimes I didn’t want to buy lemons and go wild.

as the days go on I like Dr. Mike more and more. calling out insane TV stunts and how they actually get in the way of peoples' health is what we need more of in public figure doctors.
I saw your interview on the fellas podcast and was blown away by how straight talking and eloquent you were with everything you discussed. It is so surprising and refreshing to see a medical professional take a truly scientific approach to their presence online, rather than leaning into the entertainment aspect, to the detriment of giving sound medical opinion. As someone who has worked regularly with obtaining several medical opinions in complex personal injury situations, I know well how bias, age of the doctor, lack of willing to stay up to date in their field and just straight up being a bad doctor can massively throw off the medical advice given to a patient. It is terrifying how little control people have over the quality of the doctors they have at their darkest times. I am not saying that people should check the CVs of every doctor in their local area before choosing who will help them if they have a heart attack, but blindly following people on social media who have a degree in biology or are doctors who have questionable ethics is way too common today. Thanks for being the voice of scrutiny and actually empowering people to consider their health rather than chasing fads
When I heard that she was starting to eat other foods, I was so happy. I have anxiety specifically around vomiting and stomach issues so I would stick with things that I knew were "safe". I have, over a long period of time, expanded my horizons. I started eating different brands, slightly different things, and, to my surprise, I was fine. So, whenever I see or hear something like that, it makes me happy.
The woman at about 5:00 who ate cheese made me think of an eating disorder, ARFID, that I've seen in an influencer's videos where she cooks new foods for her bf with ARFID. As far as I understand, it's around avoiding/restricring certain foods due to reasons like fear/trauma/texture/flavour/other
Yes, the three main types are (in a nutshell) sensory issues with textures/flavors, fear of something bad happening (like choking or an allergic reaction), and simply not being interested in food/motivated to eat.
I was looking for this comment, lol. I have ARFID but wasn't diagnosed as a kid since it wasn't a defined condition until 2013. Food in general just yucks me out a lot of the time, and I do eat some "weird" stuff sometimes because it'll be the only thing that seems bearable. It's totally treatable though, and there are therapies being developed to help kids and adults with ARFID, so it's awesome to see more people being aware of it and being able to get help.
@@ingranbrightriver2890 I'm of the "fear of something bad happening" type (though my therapist doesn't really think it's ARFID; the therapy is pretty much the same, anyway).

I did not expect Dr Mike to have a true classic ad. Legitimately love those shirts. Bought for my husband last year and he looks so handsome in them, they look way better than normal tshirts.
The hosts for this show are so despicable and manipulative, it's infuriating. No one should be shamed this much for having unhealthy eating habits if they're not gonna provide adequate support to overcome it.
"You know who the show is out to help" so true! I love how you always analyse cases without any judgment, you stay true to the reason why you made this channel 🙏
i'm so glad dr. mike is pointing out how showing the amount they eat isn't going to do much - and there's an episode of this show that comes to mind. a woman was drinking over 20 cans of cola a day, and by the end of their treatment, literally nothing changed and she didn't see the impact of their shock therapy. i'm glad we have dr. mike doing this for the internet :)
And it doesn't help the person either. This show feels like when bullies keep calling a person fat all the time, and then acting like "but we were only saying it to help you because it's not healthy to be fat".
That could be likely. Her mention of cheese being “safe” because it won’t make her sick makes me wonder if she also has emetophobia (fear of vomiting).
If your confused about why people were walking on the cornstarch it's because when it's mixed with water it becomes a non Newtonian fluid, when it gets impacted it becomes a solid & if you stand init for a while you gradually sink into it.
As someone with a lot of texture issues with food and an addictive personality I appreciate you calling them out on the ridiculous shenanigans just for the sake of views, so stupid and wasteful and not mentally helpful at all. Because of my texture issues I sometimes randomly get really obsessed with a particular food and at one point in time that was pepperoni and I was completely addicted to it so I understand some of the mental components and I totally feel for them.
Of course they are. It's a TV show. If they were genuinely interested in helping people they would just work from offices like people in their field normally do, rather than making a spectacle out of people on TV for money and for viewers' entertainment.
Hi dr. Mike, future nutritionist here, I have a question. In this ridiculous show they took the guy to see a dialysis patient, in order to show him what kidney failure looks like (I agree with you, it was a strange idea). BUT- in most cases people don't mind when you tell them about risks of chronic diseases (like CHD, CKD, T2D and so on), but once one sees the treatments and quality of life that patients have once they get sick- Wouldn't it have a potent alarming effect?
Also, is she craving this due to an actual nutritional deficit? She mentioned pregnant women. Chocolate is often craved because of a magnesium deficiency. Pickles often due to a need for sodium. I wonder if the cornstarch is a sleep issue or sickle cell and need for fast carbs for energy. Or a need for zinc and iron. This is why real bloodwork and testing is needed. I doubt it's just psychological.
It’s important to notice that the “psychotherapist” never stated he was licensed or certified as the nutritionist/dietician did. I work in the mental health field and NOBODY in my industry would ever promote this type of shaming. It’s disgusting how some people’s minimal familiarity with mental health treatment can be based off such blatant misrepresentation like this.
14:37 a better question is "Why does Mikey have a printed polo shirt with the same logo as the company with the dialysis setup?" I mean I have zero experience with those places, but do they have a gift shop where you can buy their shirts? Do you get a free shirt with every dozen cleanings? Or based on how silly that show is, my guess is Mikey really just someone who works for the company and they needed someone to step in and give a PSA. and he may not really have kidney failure?
After looking up the requirements to become a Nutrition Specialist and a Psychotherapist, neither of these people should be acting the way that they are. Even if neither strictly requires a doctoral degree, they should absolutely still know better. I can only assume that these "professionals" are either lying or are completely morally bankrupt. The people in the UK seemed like they actually cared about helping the person get better. They still did silly stunts and brought out the props, but they actually showed a level of support that wasn't present on the American side.
Isn't this true with Gordon Ramsay, too? These "reality" shows in the US are a very mean joke. I pointed out Chef Ramsay because aren't his shows in the US framing him in a similar light (when the contestants are adults)?

I rarely hear Dr. Mike swear, but he's really upset at this show (and I'm here for it.)

Love my local maple farmers in maine they do amazing work ❤️
In Quebec they call that type of false maple syrup by "sirop de poteaux" like "poles syrup" in English. It's so sad that a majority of people think of that type of syrup as real maple syrup...
I thought for a first it's a "Male Producers" And I was like. 😮
Yeah the stuff he's eating is literally high fructose corn syrup with some artificially created "flavorants" in a lab. Not a singular part of it is in any way related even to maple syrup. Even the taste is manufactured in a lab.
Honestly real maple syrup is so sweet that I dont think anyone would put tons of it on everything
I know right? It’s insanely disrespectful.
I honestly really hope that guy was an actor and it wasn’t real.. I’d hate for that to be a real person
Dr. Mike I don't know if you've ever reacted to Supersize Vs. Superskinny, but a lot of episodes are available on UA-cam and it shows the extreme ends of unhealthy diets and disordered eating for both over and under weight people. Really interesting in terms of physical and mental health.
I'm surprised as well, I hope he reviews that soon!
one of my favorite youtubers, luxeria, reacts to that show and it's really grotesque how they try to shock the participants with their eating habits. if doctor mike thinks this show is bad with their tub of corn starch oobleck, wait'll he sees that show dump each participant's daily food (or nicotine) intake into one giant tube slurry.
@@dietotaku Yeah the theatrics are unfortunately in the same vein as Freaky Eaters, definitely the worst element of reality shows like this.

Absolutely. Shaming leads to a greater need for coping mechanisms
Not only that - more likely to hide what they’re doing instead of continuing to seek help to be able to change.
And makes them way less likely to reach out for help again.
The gaslighting they did to the patients triggered me so much
So glad Dr Mike called them out
EXACTLY LIKE I IF I WATCHED THAT EPISODE WITHOUT MIKE I WOULD FEEL REALLY SCARED ABOUT MY EATING DISORDER AND BE COMING EVEN MORE
So relieved to see a doctor saying that's not okay !
No one would be fat but the ultra IDGAF fiber creates a mesh net that can block absorption of some of your nutrients in the carbs you get with a lot of the fiber causes a lot of issues.

Everyone in the comments are ignorant. It’s all fake and scripted and the people that come on the shows already know that it’s not actual treatment
Thankfully aldis and krogers and dollar trees exist but it's still hard and most days I'm eating mainly soup and occasionally dumplings, when we get the ebt we buy lots of chicken and ingredients mainly which last a while due to the ability to freeze things but I'm struggling to get my weight back up which dropped from 110 lbs to 95 lbs, it kinda floats in between those two but I can't get it back over 100, for context I'm 18 soon to be 19 so 95 ish isn't great and i so badly want to being my weight back up but eating is hard
If i dealt with another person like this i would probably go off on them too, the last girl wasn't even morbidly obese as she put it, she was super gorgeous and you could just see her self confidence draining from her as that lady droned on 😒
food pantries just give us junk, you can't trust the food unless it's canned and even then it's iffy.

Same!!
The number one thing I love about Dr. Mike, is the fact he's honest and puts other Doctors 'in their place' when they're talking nonsense, instead of just blindly agreeing with them because they share the same titles! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I just have to say, I love Mike's compassion. I love how angry he gets on other people's behalf when people are cruel to them.
GOD THE DIETICIAN ON THIS SHOW PISSES ME OFF. She just has this subtle, malice sense of superiority about in the way she talks to people about food and exercise. Dear Dr Mike,
As a little girl, I started drinking salt and vinegar over ice whenever I got the craving.
I hope you're better now but it's a struggle and a journey
Lemons with salt was a major pregnancy craving of mine, 10 years later I occasionally indulge when I get a lemon in my water at a restaurant. But I’d be lying if sometimes I didn’t want to buy lemons and go wild.

Thank you so much for sticking up for the mental health of patients. I can't tell you how refreshing that is!!

BUT- in most cases people don't mind when you tell them about risks of chronic diseases (like CHD, CKD, T2D and so on), but once one sees the treatments and quality of life that patients have once they get sick-
Wouldn't it have a potent alarming effect?
I also work in mental health and the practices on this show are infuriating.
Dr. Cox was a GREAT doctor for a reason.
@@PinkAgaricuscorrect me if I’m wrong but Gordan Ramsey is actually a very accomplished chef outside of TV. I don’t think these hosts are actually doctors
I am so glad that dr mike actually gets behind what is actually happening. He knows how pointless the stunts are, and he knows what these people really need. If anyone should have one of these types of shows, it would be dr mike (this one. Not the evil one)
