  • The R5C brings with it an entirely different approach to how a mirrorless video camera should operate, and one of the biggest consequences of this is that the R5C eats batteries like they're going out of style. This got me interested, is the R5C really that far behind the curve compared to other cinema and mirrorless cameras, or is the limited battery life a consequence of design decisions aimed to provide the best possible image quality in a cinema context.
    The short of it, is that the R5C's actual power consumption appears to be on par with other mirrorless cameras like the Nikon Z9 and Sony A1. However, it's hamstrung by the combination of those cinema design decisions and the smallest battery in it's class.

    What an incredible comparison and overall result. Really fascinating to see that going lower in resolution does not really have an impact on power consumption (although, as you mentioned, that makes total sense since the downsampling still has to happen). And thank you for providing numbers for modes which Canon does not cover like the 24fps 4k power consumption 👍.

    Informative video, thank you! Can't wait to see your video on external power. I'm trying to find the smallest option available as I bought this to be a b-cam/gimbal/crash cam to my other cinema cameras so my intention was not to rig it out and keep it small. It would be great if Canon gave us an update to turn on/off a low-quality standby mode. I was blown away when I first got the camera and the battery died while I was just going through the menus, now I understand why. thanks again!

    Keep up the great work!

    If you're looking for the best solution for powering the R5C, my apologies as I don't have an answer for that yet.
    I don't get pre-release hardware from Canon, so I don't have an opportunity to test things prior to when they're made available to the general public. Additionally, it takes time to understand and test the gamut of solutions and options that are on the market, and I simply haven't had the time with the camera to test or acquire all the available options.
    However, I'm actively working on this topic. And thanks for your interest.

    Thank you for your insightful video. Do you know if there is a way to remotely view and set the focus area on the R5C while in the Video mode? I know that start/stop recording can be triggered by a remote shutter button. And, will
    the R5C connect to the Canon Camera Connect app when paired with an external Wi-Fi grip? Thank you, Alan

    Hi. Thanks for the video. I just bought R5C and can't find the Auto power off function in video mode but it exists in photo mode. Is there any way to find that in camera or it doesn't exists in video mode?

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  Рік тому +1

      That's because there is no Auto Power Off function in video mode.
      Remember, in video mode, the R5C is running Canon's Cinema EOS OS, not the photo EOS OS that it uses in still photography mode. The Cinema OS was initially developed for cameras like the C300, C500 and C700, and their expected uses. As a result, there's many trade offs that the Cinema OS makes compared to the Photo OS.
      For example, the camera doesn't power off when the card or battery doors are opened. The sensor is never read out at a lower quality level. And there's no auto power off setting. To name a few.

      If you're in the US, I would recommend using the feedback function on Canon USA's website to provide that feedback to Canon.
      One of the things that I find most exciting about the R5C is that it brings two very different worlds together in a way that has never happened in Canon's products before. It's exposing the Cinema EOS OS to a new market segment that has somewhat different requirements than the traditional film makers, and with that there's going to be some new ideas and ways of working that traditional Cinema OS users, and as a result Canon's designers, might not have considered.

    Have you had the chance to test how much power is consumed during an 8K 60fps recording? I've researched quite a bit, but couldn't find a clear answer.

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  7 місяців тому +1

      I though I had, but in looking through my notes, it appears I never did.
      I just ran a quick test, and saw an average power consumption of around 14-14.5 Watts. However, I also saw several spikes where it was using closer to 18 W.

    • @mehmet_hanay
      @mehmet_hanay 7 місяців тому

      Thank you very much for your effort and your response.Can we talk about a power consumption of less than 20 watts under all conditions for all of these? According to these values, would a 22.5-watt power bank be sufficient, or is a 9-volt 3-amp output necessary?@@PointsInFocus

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  7 місяців тому +1

      Short answer: no.
      Long answer: USB PD doesn't work like a old school DC connection (e.g. where as long as the voltage is right, and the source can supply enough current everything is fine). In a USB-PD setup, the sink (device) communicates with the source (battery pack, AC adapter, computer, monitor, hub, etc.) to get a list of the voltages and current's it can supply. If the source can supply what the devices is looking for, then the device tells the source to configure itself to that power profile.
      In the case of the R5C, and R5 (as well as other Canon cameras), the camera specifically looks for the 9 volt 3 amp power profile. If the supply doesn't offer that specific configuration, the camera will not complete the USB-PD handshake and power won't flow.
      Now I know you didn't ask this, but you might be wondering why Canon requires 9V & 3A when the camera doesn't appear to draw more than 2A in my testing. And the answer to is a combination of the multi-function shoe's power requirements (non of my power tests have had anything in the M.Fn shoe that uses power), and having a sufficiently high current supply that momentary spikes don't trip software over-current protections.

    Do you think the standby state power consumption can be fixed with a firmware update?

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  2 роки тому +3

      It absolutely could be "fixed" in a firmware update. But I don't think Canon sees this as an issue or something that's broken, so I don't think there's going to be a "fix" anytime soon.
      No dropping to a low quality standby mode is inherently part of the cinema OS ethos in that the camera doesn't assume that it's only recording or being recorded when you hit the record button. So a "fix" would also require adding a whole new set of settings to allow configuring whether or not the camera operates in "low power standby" mode when it's not physically recording.
      The thing to keep in mind is that the the cinema OS coming to the R5C is coming from the $$$$ level cinema cameras and the kinds of needs and requirements that people shooting actual films and TV productions (Hollywood, indie, TV, commercials, etc.) have. If you're use to the kind of "simplified" production that you have in a R5, or similar consumer grade mirrorless camera, some of the design decisions are probably going to seem like bugs or problems are really design decisions that stem from a different perspective and use case.
      That said, this is one of the things that I think I'm most excited about with the R5C. Up until now, there's been two completely separate worlds. The only real "crossover" camera in this kind of vein was the EOS 1DC, which was $15,000, and really nobody who wasn't a pro cinematographer bought it.
      The R5C is really the first time that Canon has released a cinema camera that's both price and feature wise attractive to people who aren't purely in the pro video/cinematography world. As a result, I think there's going to be a lot of cross pollination of ideas going both ways, form the new user base, and ultimately that will make both the EOS photo and cinema OSes better in the long run.
