This movie was outstanding for so many reasons. It was 1971 and racism was everywhere. Even in San Francisco. And this movie doesn't try to hide that fact. It was 1971 and liberals were just coming into power and believes that you deal with crime in a gentle, less direct way. Negotiation with criminals (which we know today is useless) was considered not only a viable option, but preferred. And then we have Harry who just loves his city, loves the kids, loves his coworkers, and loves shooting criminals. No lawsuits. No public outcry against him. People were racist which was bad, but sane.

Right after Harry jumps off onto the bus there is a camera shot from the side showing a Go Kart track in the background. I used to go there many times as a kid. I love this movie. Probably Eastwood's best. The Hutchinson Rock Quarry (since gone) was only a mile from San Quentin Prison.

It’s an amazing series of shots. So many films rely either on wide-shots to hide the stuntman’s appearance from a distance (does often help with building the scale of the stunt too but once you know the trick, you can’t ever unlearn it) or occasionally super-tight shots that obscure the face from the frame. Here we get not only those great wides, but also that fantastic handheld shot which absolutely confirms Eastwood’s genuine presence in the scene, it’s just wonderful!

Yep, the off ramp looks exactly the same, and that old wooden bridge he stood on is still there. The rest of the area is a shopping center, with apartments surrounding it. Crazy how 50 plus years and some things actually stay the same!👍☹️

Andrew Robinson is an expert at playing bad guys. He'd later play the duplicitous Cardassian Garak in STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE (1993-1999).

Thats a VERY ACCURATE (Pun intended) depiction of the precision of a long barreled .44 magnum.
The truth is; he could have been another 40 feet away and the results would have been the same.

I don't quite remember this version, be it when he smacks the kid on the bus or after getting shot subsequently drowns.

Even in this one excerpt from the film, you see the echos of the times and the Zodiac Killer terror spree in that area: In the Killer's name (Scorpio for Zodiac), In the threat to children on a school bus (Zodiac threatened to "pick off kiddies as they got of their school bus"), and then with Scorpio seeing the lake with the child fishing and then running to it, grabbing the kid (Zodiac carrying out one of his infamous kiilings of a young couple relaxing at a lake.)

The movie was actually made to reel in the Zodiac killer.. Police departments across San Francisco were hopeful but skeptical this would work.

Was that not the film “The Zodiac Killer” from the same year? I know Scorpio was heavily inspired by the Zodiac, but I don’t recall any behind the scenes info about the film being used as a bait tactic. It seems more likely that it was the other film, they changed facts on purpose. I would imagine the idea was to enrage the real killer’s ego.

Hey, let's not forget to say something about the actress who played bus driver Marcella Platt: the great Ruth Kobart. Did you know she was much more than an actress? She was an opera singer who toured with the New York City Opera, among others. A very talented woman.

I should have looked her up before posting! I think most of us would recognize Ruth Kobart as Nurse Ratched in 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'. A brilliant, unforgettable role.

When the fishing kid gets home: “How was your fishing trip at the dam, dear?” “Well a psychopathic killer grabbed me from behind, but only briefly, as another man shot him and I ran away”…. Oh that’s nice dear… it’s time for dinner now..,

There's no way this movie could have gotten away with a simple R-rating if that 44-Magnum ever did the damage Clint *said* it would do.
