This movie was outstanding for so many reasons. It was 1971 and racism was everywhere. Even in San Francisco. And this movie doesn't try to hide that fact. It was 1971 and liberals were just coming into power and believes that you deal with crime in a gentle, less direct way. Negotiation with criminals (which we know today is useless) was considered not only a viable option, but preferred. And then we have Harry who just loves his city, loves the kids, loves his coworkers, and loves shooting criminals. No lawsuits. No public outcry against him. People were racist which was bad, but sane.

Right after Harry jumps off onto the bus there is a camera shot from the side showing a Go Kart track in the background. I used to go there many times as a kid. I love this movie. Probably Eastwood's best. The Hutchinson Rock Quarry (since gone) was only a mile from San Quentin Prison.
I love Sudden Impact. I moved to Santa Cruz two years after it was made. And two years before the '89 Loma Prieta earthquake. Good and bad times for sure.
It's such a shame Andy had to deal with idiots who don't know the difference between reality and fiction after this role, because this is an absolutely stellar performance, and he just forces you to absolutely loathe him. Still, one of the best "bad guys" of all time, and a perfect portrayal by Mr. Robinson. 👍👍 Of course, his nemesis was pretty damn great, too! 👍👍

Love this film and Eastwood 's movies from this era. So well made; no constant flicking here and there camera shots. People had proper attention spans back then.
It was 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' that turned Eastwood into a major film star but the Dirty Harry films definitely contributed to his stardom. 'Dirty Harry' has been credited with inventing the "loose-cannon cop" genre.
I don't think I've ever been more pleased to see a bad guy offed than I was in this film. Andy Robinson's Scorpio is so dislikable, it's a real payoff.

The Scorpio character was loosely based on the real life Zodiac Killer who was operating in Northern California around the time and the case is still unresolved. Zodiac wrote many letters to the press bragging about his crimes but strangely didn't mention this film (at least in any correspondence in the public domain).
I think it's two psychopaths against each other. One good, one evil. In this movie, more than the sequels, Harry definitely gets off on killing bad guys, but he also loves mentally tormenting them to see if they break. He appears to get an almost sexual thrill out of it. You can see it in his face at 9:29.
Anyone ever seen a School Bus with roof racks? I drove one for years and we had a massive fleet. Had there been no roof racks, the entire movie would have been different. Regardless, it's a great movie and I LOVE it!!!
Yes actually. Long time ago, like 1972, just one year after Dirty Harry was made. We were headed up to Canada on a school bus to go canoeing up in Quebec. The racks held all our gear. Forgot about that till you asked. Interesting…
A bit of trivia. Yes, even though Harry’s gun was called a .44 Magnum (S&W Model 29) in this first Dirty Harry movie, the prop gun was actually a S&W Model 57 .41 Magnum. A .44 Magnum was used in the rest of the installments.
Soon as he sank he was rescued by a group of time traveling Cardassians, taken to Cardassia Prime, given a sharp makeover and thus became, in time, Elim Garrick.
Imagine Harry and Scorpio could be playable characters in a Mario Kart game! My god that would be very cool! This scene is a masterpiece also as well! And Clint Eastwood, congratulations on your next film also!
When Harry jumps on the bus you can clearly see it is Clint doing that himself, no hollywood A-Lister apart from maybe Tom Cruise(though there would be all kinds of extra safety precautions) would ever perform such a stunt these days.
It’s an amazing series of shots. So many films rely either on wide-shots to hide the stuntman’s appearance from a distance (does often help with building the scale of the stunt too but once you know the trick, you can’t ever unlearn it) or occasionally super-tight shots that obscure the face from the frame. Here we get not only those great wides, but also that fantastic handheld shot which absolutely confirms Eastwood’s genuine presence in the scene, it’s just wonderful!

Was that not the film “The Zodiac Killer” from the same year? I know Scorpio was heavily inspired by the Zodiac, but I don’t recall any behind the scenes info about the film being used as a bait tactic. It seems more likely that it was the other film, they changed facts on purpose. I would imagine the idea was to enrage the real killer’s ego.
