The first two scenes were actually filmed at the HOJ-previously the headquarters for the SFPD. The gun room was subsequently converted into the CSI locker room. Every time I was in that room, I thought to myself that Clint Eastwood actually filmed a scene in this very room!

Bias ply or radial, if you let a tire go down to around 15 psi (don't intentionally drive on a low tire like this), it will squeal too, just negotiating corners, no gassing on it necessary. If you ever hear tire squeal when doing day-to-day driving while cornering, it's a sign that you have an underinflated tire.
The loader had taken care of the bad guy and lifted one rear wheel off the ground. Best to stop it so the coroner doesn't get caught up in those free spinning tires.

Harry, the dirty cop, had light loads in his 44 ammo for no recoil (better control for subsequents shots) but Eastwood, the actor, was used to Far West shoot outs and stressed every round a bit much.

Good plot armor but as hinted by the dialogue before the shootout, the real Mafia would rather fight in court rather than in the street, as their odds are better.
The mobsters probably would have accepted being arrested... Except for the series of Assassinations of criminals that occurred in earlier scenes. Not to mention they were just told they were about to be Hit by gunmen dressed as Cops. Once they had killed one, the mobsters figured they had no choice but to try to shoot their way out of the situation, no matter if they were fighting Assassins or Cops! 🙄 (Turns out it was Both!)
Good flick. I recognize the actor who played mobster Palancio. I think he also played Bruno Tattaglia in the first "Godfather". He was in the scene where Luca Brazzi gets killed.

Gee until just now I see the shotgun that got Sweet for flunking police academy 101 (don't stand in front of a door when knocking) can double duty as a drill, it made a nice round hole in the door before hitting him. 7:12

When the director told him to stand in front of the door, Matheson objected, stating that copes don't stand directly in front of doors. It could be canned, could have been planned. Let the tire pressure go down to around 15 psi and then go around corners, they'll squeal whether bias ply or radial. Not a recommended practice, but it's a great movie trick for the sound effect of tire squeal.

I love the sound effects on these old cops and robbers shows, tires squealing simply because the cars are moving.

Not always credible. From the time the boss fired his shotgun, it took about 2 days to hit the door, then another 3 days to hit the cop. 5:44
Great movie, with great actors and dialogue. Hal Holbrook did a great job in this.
First minute and 20 is simply but beautifully lit, framed and acted. Economic, classy. 30 second mark defines the protaganist and antagonist.
