Absolutely awesome to hear this microphone in action. I think that this microphone opens up much possibility with electroacoustic music, along with VR and film. I know that this will be a great purchase down the road. 🙂
Sounds amazing. Have you...or could you please do a demo using Rode ambisonic mic in quiet surroundings. I would like to hear signal to noise ratio. Example recording room tone or really quiet forest. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks Robert this is a great insight into how the NT-SF1 produces sounds. Really like the audio samples and your explanation of how the software plugin works thanks!
I use the Tascam 701d and the RØDE NT-SF1 as well. I find that A-Format setting on the Tascam doesn't seem to give me the levels I expect across all four channels. So, I use B-Format AmbiX. My fear is that this B decoder was tuned for the Sennheiser Amber VR head and may not accurately decode the NT-SF1. Any thoughts?
Thank you for sharing this and every other video you upload. I watch your videos and feel so inspired to create. It's like tapping into someone else's perspective. The information you give is so rich and invaluable. Just wanted to reach out and say thank you :)
Thank you Robert for showing us the SF1 and Soundfield, well done sir! I have some 4 track sample files loaded in Audacity and I can not get the Rode plug to load. Your examples are great! Cheers!
THe poster didn't respond to you yet, so I'll take the liberty to do so. For the Zoom F6, there is an Ambisonics (A or B) setting, so four inputs are controlled by a single gain. (The same occurs on the F6 for when inputs are marked as stereo pairs.) Re binaural question, you would have to check if the Rode plugin has that output.
Dear Robert, just found this video. Thank you so much for doing this. It's very inspiring. I am a full time landscape photographer / artist and I'm in the process of setting up some podcasts. I've just bought the Rode NT-SF1 and I see their software is no longer supported - they abandoned it. Are you using Logic to process the files now? Thanks so much for this excellent series.
@@RobertDudzic they havent updated it since 2018. Mac silicone doesnt install. \i tried switching off security as apple says the plugin needs updating. others are commenting also. Pretty shoddy. just bought the mike too.
@@RobertDudzic Hi Robert, Apologies, but it does install. It's the system security that initially stops it. They changed the interface on the latest OS which confused me, as I normally select 'open anyway'. It's working now. Sorry for the confusion !
Amazing work! I would love to see a video in which you go over 'beefing up' your samples because they sound really really good. Yes, the mic is great but what did you do to the samples that make them extra amazing? 🙃
Hello Robert, many thanks for your great work :-) May I ask how you converted the sounds from Ambisonic-B format to Binaural. The Soundfield plug-in does not have a Binaural output, so which plug-in did you use to make it happen?
So I'm obtaining on of these mics. And I am new to sound editing. You mentioned Reverb as the software you use to do the edits on. However I can't pull up this software in any search. Does it go by any other name?
very interesting episode... and it's more helpful to us... I like your sharing attitude... so, I'm a big fan of you. I study the tips and research the equipments that's you introduced.
Thanks for sharing your process and ideas Robert. Looking forward to learning more. I was wondering what the location at 2.32 was please as I’ll be in New York later this year and it looks like an interesting location.

Thank you for this Robert, have you ever tested any of the second-order ambisonic like the Octomic? I'm wondering if beyond the spec-sheet advantage, there is any significant difference in data capture or headroom during processing. I ask this, because I can't imagine any production needing higher level sound quality than what's demonstrated in this video. edit: I guess if something like Dolby Surround in IMAX might benefit due to the amount of output speakers and sheer space.
Epic recording dude. Do you have the 5.1 version as a Wav file someware for us to get someware? I'd love to see how it sounds. Because I don't get how you 5.1 or 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos only 4 capsels. The way I see it and maybe I'm missing something you need a fith capsel to truely have the 5. also really 6 cause you need 1 that only hears bass for LFE. Apparently not though.
Hello Robert! Thank you for this great video, its very inspiring. One question: In the video do you use the straight plug-in (stereo) output or do you do some post surround encoding?
Cool mic! So is this replacing the NTG3 at all? Is it any good for catching dialog for a film shoot? I assume the NT-SF1 is great as a backup mic for dialog recording with a few actors, but can it actually replace a hard working boom operator?
I'm interested to know this as well! It's essentially an audio equivalent of raw video, with the ability to create virtual microphones, change polar patterns, highlight specific sources etc. So with such unprecedented revolutionary capabilities, do you think this can replace a sound recordist on indie/low budget shoots?
I bought this microphone recently and hooked it up to a mix-pre 6 ii, I'm getting sound from it but its very low despite increasing the gain. QUESTION 1: Sound Devices has an Ambisonic plug-in which I'm thinking is must at point, am I correct? QUESTION 2: Does the Zoom F8N Pro require an Ambisonic plug-in? QUESTION 3: In your opinion, would these two field recorders yield a similar sound with this particular microphone? This might seem a bit loaded, but any help you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.
@@RobertDudzic Thanks - only interested because I was thinking of getting the NT-SF1 as I have the Sennheiser. Although I did a lot of field recordings for the BBC, I am mainly interested in using it to record my own musical ensembles, and obviously it’s handy to be able to change directivity after the event, especially if you can’t monitor because you are performing. Do you ever have problems with moisture? Because the Ambeo is an electret design, which I think have fewer problems with condensation. If I could justify buying both to test them, I would! They are all a bit difficult to compare with normal mics as the capsule noise is dependent on the pattern (ie, how they are combined in post). But I’m a big fan of ambisonics! Great video.
Hey man! I was just wondering if you could share your knowledge. I'm using the Soundfield plugin in Reaper and when I set the output for 5.1, I'm only getting 4 channels on the final file. Do you know by any chance how to get the 5.1 output to work? Is there a specific setting I'm missing? Thanks man!

Thanks Robert! I really appreciate you sharing your process! :-D How would you add the shotgun mic to this setup if it is already using all 4 inputs of the DR-701D?
Very interesting video, Robert. Over the last couple of years, I've become very interested in hi-fidelity recording and have been collecting the best gear I can afford along the way. Have been looking at the Rode ambisonic mic for a while. Endless possibilities. Thanks for letting us see into your world!
Hello Robert, first of all, thank you for this series, it is exceptional and inspiring seeing how you work. I wanted to ask you something about the way you record and handle the multi-channels. Say that you record a session using one shotgun and two side mics mounted on a pistol grip. That will result in three channels of audio featuring the same sound. How will you use those three channels when designing your "final" stereo sound? Are you layering mutiple channels of the same source sound and simply process and then render them in a stereo file? Thank you!
Firstly, I wouldnt call it surround sound, ambisonics or even 3D ar much more accurate, because in surround sound you have the X and Y axis covered - 2D, but here you have the Z axis too, so - 3D. Secondly, it's a great tool to capture soundscapes, but if you had to play it back through a large sound system, I'm talking domes of 20-90 speakers, you'd notice you're lacking directional accuracy of the sound sources, that is because this is a first order ambisonics microphone (4 channels), and while already being an amazing piece of technology that was being developed throughout the last 50 years or so, it bleaks in comparison with Zylia - a 3rd order ambisonics microphone (19 channels), and let's not even get started that ambisonics, as things stand, can span up to 64 channels PER track (7th order).
Absolutely awesome to hear this microphone in action. I think that this microphone opens up much possibility with electroacoustic music, along with VR and film. I know that this will be a great purchase down the road. 🙂
