    What a nice balance between ‘review’ and practical tips for recording in the field. Also, your video quality/editing is really stepping up; I really like the transitions between the ‘story’ and the ‘test’ with the change in aspect ratio.

    Thanks. I enjoy the video. Although I'm finding the sound coming out of these recordings a bit too much on the hissy side. Where I expected a comfortable and ambient wide stereo image, I found it sounding very dense and compact. Are there different ambisonic decoding algorithms, or do they all sound the same?

    • @bolttracks
      @bolttracks 9 місяців тому

      Hi Cuckoo! 👋
      It’s all about how you configure it during the decoding stage, you can decide the polar pattern and stereo width yourself or even have multiple virtual microphones if you convert it to surround!

    I have NT-SF1 and Zoom F6 and also Nuendo 11 so I can make Dolby Atmos sound. The plug-in for NT-SF1 can make 7.1.4 sound. In film they have NT-SF1 for the background sound and other mikes for the sound that should be clear and easy to listen to.

    Question… if you were to downmix the ambisonic recording to a stereo file, would it still sound more spacious than a regular stereo recording?

    • @XskateTV
      @XskateTV 2 роки тому

      You can do that by using a binaural decoder (for example IEM plugins), then it's more spatial if you listen to it on earphones.
      But if you just want to use stereo I would record in stereo

    The Sound Devices ambeo plugin is calibrated for the Sennheiser Ambesonic mic only. Ambeo mics are very sensitive to proper calibration, so although it will probably work with the Rode mic, it will not work as well. Many ppl say you don’t really need the ambeo plug-in on a Sound Devices MixPre. Just record the four channels with linked gains and process in the DAW for surround sound.

      Is always different and depends on the sound effect and soundscape. There is no manual about how long a recording should be and only you should decide how long you want a recording to be. I normally record around 3 minutes and move on to a different location.

    I have the F6 and just got a NT-FS1, and so far I am not super impressed with the "isolation" I think it sounds just as good if not better using my binaural microphone.
    However I have one really important question I wanted to ask you directly.
    On the F6 are you recording in A-Format or B-Format? The results I get are quite different. I would think with the SoundField plugin being made specifically for the NT-FS1 that A-Format would produce more accurate results, but I actually think I get better results (less gain, but more accurate sound) when using the Ambix B-Format and using the Plugin as a generic B-Fromat decoder rather than A-Format.
    There may not be a lot of people that can use the video, but I would absolutely LOVE a short video of you hooking up the NT-FS1 to the F6, your settings in the F6, and then your workflow/settings you use in the DAW with the Rode Plugin.
    For now, if you could reply with what format you record in, and if you found one to be better than the other. I really appreciate it!

    Very happy to have found your channel. I'm also a sound recordist working professionally. I create sound installations and music and sounddesign for film.
    I'm using the H2a Hydrophones and looking to upgrade to the ASF1 mkII's. I'm going to sail in the Arctic this year and i'm looking to level up on some knowledge and equipement.
    I bought the RODE- NTSF1 last year. I'm also looking to dive deeper in the control what is possible in post production. Get into Ambisonics more, but also using it to create 5.1 or more channel surround installations on speakers.
    I have found that the internal routing of the Rode Soundfield plugin does not correspond with the internel routing with for example lets say Logic or Reaper. I use that software instead of Ableton which I use for my music productions because of the native surround routing which Ableton Live simply lacks. It would be great to hear your experience on this topic if you have also worked with these kind of surround setups. It's like you say in other video's, this topic is very unique and not so much experience is to be found online about these specific questions.
    Thanks for sharing the video's I became a big fan already within a couple of days!

      Hello Tristan! Wow, that sounds like an adventure!! You should get the Ambient ASF1 or the Dolphin Ears. I guess you want to go deep and you can go up to 100m with these hydrophones. I've heard about this issue, but I personally don't work in production. I'm recording these sounds and make them available. There's a channel on UA-cam and I think he's an Austrian teacher and he talks a lot about Ambisonic sounds. If you want I can try to find the channel again and let you know?

    Do you have a preference on the height of the ambisonic microphone?

      Hi Ken, only if it gets windy i stay low. The higher I go, the weaker the pole.

    Cool. I do like ambisonic recordings. Looks like I need to get an NT-SF1. And a recorder to plug it into ! Ha ha. Why do I always choose expensive hobbies ?
