  • There comes a time in every Mario Kart-Adjacent UA-cam Channel's life where the courses must be ranked. This is that time.
Rather than just providing a list, I figured I'd show the process since it's still ongoing. If you're looking for the finished list, wait a while and I'll probably make a video to go over it eventually.

And that's before you find out this is only 1/6th of the tracks in the game!

Never really saw Wario Stadium the way you talk about it, but now that I do, I totally agree with you that a good course should have something happen at every moment of the track. Honestly, my own opinion of Wario Stadium bumped up a little bit now that you pointed that out.
Also that Baby Park take is so fkin valid. I personally love it because of how chaotic it is, but taking Baby Park and comparing it to a group of friends irl is a perfect take on it. It’s not really fun online because you have no one to laugh with.
All in all, loved this! Can’t wait to see more!

Man, it was great seeing someone else who really loves DS Wario Stadium and Bone Dry Dunes. I absolutely love those tracks. I used to LOATHE Bone Dry Dunes (because I wasn't good at it) until I practiced it for ages to try to get an optimal 200cc time trial time, and that practice made me great at it. Now I love it, and I get to be the person people hate online because I almost always select it lol. It's a lot more fun when you know how to navigate the difficult turns and hills, but the difficulty is what makes it so fun IMO. The difficulty makes it so much more satisfying when you conquer the course.
(I feel the same way about 3DS Piranha Plant Slide - I can't wait to see what you think of that one, but for me, after tons of practice, I went from hating it, to considering it among my top 5 tracks in the game.)
This is such a great video/concept, and I think you benefit from being a track designer yourself, so you know (better than most people) what qualities makes a track more compelling and fun. Even when I disagreed with you (as a massive Shy Guy Falls fan, and a Shy Guy main - and its song is probably my favorite song in Mario Kart history), I still 100% understood your reasoning and couldn't help but concede when you were right.
BTW, I'd love to see an average per cup as well!

12:55 The reason why they feel not as good compared to the base game is because they were never made with 8 in mind, but made for *Tour* instead. Not only that, but they're basically direct ports slapped with a coat of paint. They didn't update any models or art, it still uses the Tour simplified artstyle and it looks terrible in 8, but not Tour because that game was made with that artstyle in mind since it was a mobile game. 8 wasn't, and it shows when you play a base game track and a BCP track side by side. There's a severe downgrade in quality because they chose quantity over quality.
It also is using Tour's gameplay, so the track layout is smaller and it feels more claustrophobic, they didnt bother to scale it correctly to 8, no ways to do shortcuts properly because Tour couldn't handle that (you can't even reverse in Tour)
That's why it feels off, because Nintendo thought cutting corners was the best option despite the DLC for Wii U being just as good as the base game and fit 8 perfectly, this is literally the best selling game on the Switch
Sorry for the rant, but good lord the BCP tracks look bad and play bad (with only a few exceptions like the Nitro tracks, but even they were made for Tour anyway because Tour ending up getting those tracks not even a month or two later after they had been released in the BCP)

I'm well aware of how the Booster Pass came to be and the limitations caused by their import. It'll probably come up more often later and definitely shows with Ninja Hideaway. I also think if they hadn't have done what they did, we wouldn't have gotten another 48 tracks, certainly not for 25 bucks, and we still wouldn't have gotten a new Mario Kart game instead because the team would have been working on Tour regardless. I also wouldn't have been as excited about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in 2023 without it.
Does it suck that not everything is up to base game standards? Yes. Am I still glad the Booster Pass happened? Double yes.

Honestly I would have just preferred if they made a new Mario Kart for the Switch and had been done with it, instead of porting over Mario Kart 8 and updating it like they did with countless other games in the early era to make up for the Wii U.
I wanted more Mario Kart, so I ended up spending a lot of money on Tour's gacha systems (the alts were a neat idea and what are the chances they'll show up in a console Mario Kart game anyway), but now that it's basically a year away from EoS, I just grew to dislike the game entirely and I only log in now to hoard rubies. I stopped playing the game like I did pre-gacha, which I guess in hindsight shows how predatory the gacha system really was in Nintendo games, which FEH also has an issue with. But then I just also grew to dislike how it played, how it ruined retro tracks, how much it felt like Mario Kart 7 but worse (which I also grew to dislike) and how much it liked to spam the tracks from that game. There's some good things, like the alts I already said, and the frenzy system, but at the cost of us getting a proper Mario Kart game like we should have, instead.
So, yeah, I'm personally not glad about the BCP existing because these tracks would have been fantastic if they were made with 8 in mind (again, like the DLC on Wii U nobody seems to have bought), having anti-gravity, completely redesigning the course.. but no, because of Tour, we didn't get that. Tracks like Kalamari Desert would have been perfect for that, instead of just being boring like it is now. Now what are the chances Kalimari Desert and other tracks in the BCP get remade again? It's slim to none. I bought the BCP, but then I still haven't touched it. I don't want to play it because I've already had enough of Tour, and I wanted something fresh. That's what the BCP should have been, just like the DLC was for original 8.

I think you have some good points and I'd agree I think I'd rather the BCP have had say 1/4 to 1/2 the amount of tracks but up to base game quality designed for 8. Obviously though, the team had to work on Tour so we're stuck with what we got. I'm just glad you clarified it's Tour's fault.
I disagree on your thoughts on porting 8. While I'm not happy they charged full price, I loved 8 but never got to play much with friends because it was on Wii U. Deluxe basically fixed all of my biggest problems from U and let me play all of its great tracks with friends so I'm glad it made the jump. In fact, I had loved 8DX so much I had repeatedly said I would rather have seen more DLC for it than 9 before the BCP/Tour because I was worried 9 would mess things up.
