In Diablo 1, you really need to use the dungeon layout itself as a shield, and as a weapon.
Using doorways to bottleneck large groups, hide behind corners and pillars to break line of sight and reduce the number of angles attacks and projectiles can come from, kite enemies away from groups, reduce your light radius and use Infravision scrolls to cheese enemies, and make sure to clear hallways before opening a new room in order to avoid facing too much traffic in the neighborhood. You only want enemies to be able to come from one direction whenever possible.
You literally just stand in a doorway and 300 Battle of Thermopylae that $#&+ all game. It's actually quite repetitive, so I'd check out other classes.

The warrior should max magic and get some +magic items to use so you can learn Stone Curse and Teleport (iirc you don't want to learn too high level of them because it just raises the mana cost though. But you need like lvl 2-3 so a shrine can't make you forget it). Then it's a lot more fun against ranged enemies who would otherwise kite you forever

Diablo 1 was the miraculous game of my generation. Being able to go through the dungeons with friends was not a regular thing then. It was special and we played for hours and hours…then we played the mods.

It’s my fav Diablo. Going down into an unknown dungeon beneath a church that leads to hell was such an intense experience as an 8 year old (and scary). It has the best atmosphere. While Diablo 2 increased the gameplay tech, running around the world chasing Prime evils trivialized that feeling of wonder and unkown terror that I got from Diablo 1
@@cavetroll666 On rooftops? You have no idea. As someone who was part of the hacking community in D1 it was the wild wild west. The game had no dedicated servers. This meant i could send any data i want from my pc to yours. Directly. We had every town npc standing in a row for ease of access. We had our characters teleport to the location we clicked. Pressing V on my keyboard turned your game off. Placing my cursor on your character killed you. F10 on my keyboard activated code for a shrine that gave me + to a random state and you - to a random stat. It happened at the rate of 255 times per second. Spiraling your stats so far into the negative it corrupted your save file.
Standing on the roof of a building was nothing.
Man i loved this game as a kid, remember playing the demo then begging my dad to get the full game. Good memories.
@TravisHowrish I remember hearing something at Blizzcon or where back in the revealing days, that Diablo was always the last boss, then expansions came, therefore, Diablo wasn't the last boss anymore or the hardest, but the title still goes to the demons name. So, they might do it backwards, Diablo will be the boss of the last expansion. After 'Vessel of Hatred', we might get something of a 'Destruction', followed by some 'Terror'. I hope my memory serves me well and will be like that. 😏
The first time I beat Diablo, my character was already dead - but I'd summoned a Golem beforehand, and I noticed all the enemies carried on attacking my corpse while the Golem kept smacking Diablo. I let it run for a while, just to see how long the Golem would last, and he eventually killed Diablo and gave me the ending cinamatics.
How did you move move your golem if you were dead? If I remember correctly it does same moves as you do
@vespenegas261 I didn't move it at all - when I died it was attacking Diablo, and because Diablo just continued attacking my corpse, it didn't need to move.

I'm so old I forget there are people who didn't grow up playing the original, was a great game to play after school. Dial up internet.
What's with the music and sound effects in this game omg. The ambience is unreal, wish games had this kind of immersion nowadays.
Interesting thing about the ending of Diablo 1 when you slam the Soulstone into your own head - it wasn't planned by Blizzard. They had a separate team doing cinematics from the design team, and they were pretty wild-westing a lot of stuff. So they come up with that ending and everyone was like "WTF?!" and it caused a LOT of debate internally. But in the end they went with it because it was unexpected and super weird and memorable. And it also paved the way for all of the sequels and the idea of the wanderer leaving Hell in their wake. You can look up the interview with David Brevik (designer) on it.
Another little known fact. D1 was originally going to be turn based. Many on the team wanted live action. They held a vote on a Friday and live action won.
David Brevik kept working through the weekend, and on Monday when the rest of the team got back to work, Brevik had written all the code necessary and it was now a live action game.
One weekend.

diablo 1.. starcraft.. age of empires.. played them all like crack when i was 9-12 funny watching this stream.. i remember diablo 1 feeling soo much longer... and who can forget the duping gold in town.. diablo 1 felt like world of warcraft to me back then.. its crazy how tiny the game is by todays standards..
Fun fact:
Diablo is probably the only aRPG where the Warrior actually wears his full plate's armour helmet in his hands while in town and equips it inside the dungeon.

I was around during the D1 hype, never cared to play it either. That isn't strange at all, people have different takes on what games to play.

The comment at around 22:30 about there being a library of sounds games used is actually right. There was a general library that a lot of companies used, especially when working on smaller projects. I know for a fact that the noises of bats in Diablo 1 are the same sound effects as the bats in Daggerfall. Its always cool to hear the sounds and think of another game from the same era
Movies are the same way, the wilhelm scream and star wars blasters come to mind.

Huuuuge nostalgia factor. This is the first PC game that I ever played. I think it's the fourth game I've played in my life after Zelda on snes, FF4, FF6 and Megaman X. Man this was the golden age of retro gaming.
Yes, I believe this was the first real PC game I played too besides the ones that came on the computer when you bought it like snake and the mine blaster one. This is the game that locked me into this franchise as a permanent fan. It's sad the teams working on it have changed so much over the years and it lost a lot of its scary suspense...

The fun part about OG Diablo was that it was different every time. The Butcher wasn't always a quest you'd get. There were a few quests per section, but you could only get a certain number.
The Butcher was always on level 2. You're remembering wrong.
@@Weremoogle IF you were given the quest. The dying man outside the cathedral doesn't always show up. If he does, you get The Butcher. If he doesn't, there's no Butcher to fight.

@@Weremoogle You're remembering wrong because you're remembering multiplayer where you only and always get two quests, Butcher and Leoric. Look up Jarulf's guide chapter 8.1 on how singleplayer quests are picked.
nothing beats diablo 1 atmosphere
Since monsters stay dead permanently, you can choose new game and select your current hero, the monsters will be back, will be a new game but with your saved char, gear, gold etc

I played this game to death in single player as all 3 characters. The game was a test of your determination, beating it was suitably hard. Though you really need to use magic for all characters because the spells rock; it seems you're playing as an Int 1 Warrior lol. I've never had a piece of gear break, this is a novel experience for me. Mage>rogue>warrior from easiest to hardest.
The story still hits me in the feels. "Diablo" was in the possessed body of the benevolent king's missing son (the child was noted as being weak and frail from birth). The sons kidnapping (by Lazarus), with verbal nudging from Lazarus, made the king go insane with rage and that is how he was turned into the Skeleton King. As for the ending, it's jarring to be sure. My best understanding is that being in the dungeons so long near Diablos influence allowed him to suggest ideas to the hero. Going into this the hero didn't know the nature of the enemy let alone that they had to guard their minds The narration you hear from the enemies could be seen as loose evidence of it. It works for Diablo as he gets a much stronger host, while the hero believed they could contain the monster, in a similar vein to Tal Rasha.
At the time hackers were everywhere ruining the online experience by PKing and sometimes even stealing the dead players gear. It was bad for me but compelling to me was watching lots of others being taken advantage of. So I got mad and made a rogue character to kill the hackers. I never hacked and the worst thing I did was dupe dex stat potions. Turns out when you do about 70dmg it causes stun on hit. I farmed the Needler and maxed my teleport spell (to avoid 1million dmg fireballs) I could keep anyone stun locked for as long I cared to until they gave up (Mana Shield with 1million mana and an inventory of potions, they can't be "killed") and either returned the items stolen or left the server. Hell I chased someone once through 12 servers to get someone armor back. Proud times.
The game had a M rating I believe, so nudity was okay(ish) as it also adds to the graphic horror. At the risk of offending someone, nothing perceptively offensive gets made. Which makes me a sad gamer.
Wish D1 would get an HD upgrade

He's currently still working on it, but TH1 (non-HD) is still amazing and my favorite.
TH3 beta is out though, and it's already pretty good.
But the full release is supposed to come out next year in the fall!
You will NOT be disappointed, I've been playing his D1 mods since 2017!
The Spitter Boss. What a classic.
There's still things in Diablo 1 that are better than later versions. See how he uses terrain to his advantage. How he can't deal with being overrun by enemies.
Later on there's techniques to dealing with enemies that run as a warrior like Teleport-Strike. Building heavy Magic instead of Vitality of using Mana Shield.
All sorts of fun little tricks you kinda figure out yourself to overcome what just becomes more and more brutal with difficulty tiers.
DM - "Do you want to stop being a bad evil kitty?"
Cat - "Nah... I'm just waiting for you to die and I'll start eating you after an hour"
Glad you enjoyed it. Was my favourite for Soooo long also D-1 maps are actually random PC generated. So nobody actually said put 20 ranged dogs at the end of a hallway.
Oh, u should know that magic here is so good and multi functional for all classes. Warrior with teleport, turning monsters to stone for more physical dammage etc. This game has HD mode with added difficulty and levels, hotkeys. It's a great thing to play, though torment difficulty is HARD to beat. Diablo level is so full of monsters and u got only 15 or 30 minutes timer to finish it.
Godly plate of the whale and other godly pieces were fun to search for haha its crazy though some of the items like stormshield and griswolds edge in d1 carried into other sequels its so nostalgic when companies do that

Those really painful hallways full of acid fiends are where D1's INCREDIBLY powerful consumables really come in handy. Don't want to get stunned? Hit a scroll of mana shield. Just want them all dead? Staff of Armageddon. Warrior bro can just cast nuke.
For warrior u should start with max dex (60 point). Then Str/Vit.
In early game -late game you need hit chance and dodge chance. Max Dex asap will make you through the game very easily.
You may want to keep a good bow in your inventory to counter range monster, keep distance and shoot them instead of running and catching them.
best game off all time... after that diablo 2 came with a faster paced open areas that just revolutionize (destroyed) the dungeon crawling gameplay... return to hell season 5 would have been amazing if instead of fast arena action they've added a gigantic random hell dungeon for us to dive in... d1 was simple and fun... just loot hunt, chose your stats, kill demons...

1st rule of D1 buy Town portal tome ASAP... i guess you learned that the hard way lol .-) also STAY away from yellow ghouls back in the day they could perma reduce your stats, i was more scared of those then anything in the game
Your my boy but that was the worst playthrough of this game lol. Im 6 hours in and you still dont know yoh can scroll through the shop, you refuse to use magic which is like 75% of the game. You made it painful for yourself the entire time by not using spells on large groups that kicked your 0ss 😂. You complained that you need gear but refuse to use the shop.i dont understand lol .You missed out on soo much of the game
Pro tip- Use the bow as a swappable weapon to kill the mages and succubi that run away. Even as a Warrior you will hit them at a decent rate and do good damage. Chasing after them is infuriating.
Honestly impressed he only died 5 times. Maybe it seemed way harder for me because I was 11 and this genre of game had literally never existed before. Also the friendly fire in multiplayer didn't help
I forget, does he have to repair stuff to not lose it to durability? I don't remember ever losing gear as a sorceror/wizard/mage
Yeah in D1 if items broke they disappeared. Not sure if he was repairing uniques with the warrior repair skill or not, but that lowers max durability each time it's used. Only really useful early on with trash items you need to keep around a bit longer before replacing.

i still dislike that Diablo games allways get cut on classes...so many possible classes in 1 game and we allways get only 5...its so bad. they cant balance the game anyway so why dont put actuall content in form of classes to the game....
Man, Diablo 1 still has the coolest looking gear out of all the Diablo's when it comes to the design especially in the inventory screen.
My first time playing this was actually right before D2R came out. My OG disc was broken when I bought the battle chest back in the day. It felt like an achievement after finishing this game. Lol

DM, if you are interested in playing the game more extensively, I suggest using the DevilutionX port, it greatly helps for speedfarming and has the expansion content.
Also some basic pro tips I can give you for Warrior:
1. Never use a 2h weapon, sword and board is king.
2. When fighting projectile spammer champs, either reset the dungeon or use magic if desperate.
3. In single player, beware of shrines, some cause negative permanent effects to your character. Look up the shrines online, if they are bad, reload and avoid. In multiplayer, avoid altogether.
4. If you come across a zombie called the Black Death, (bright yellow, looks radioactive) save before you fight it, use ranged attacks, or avoid it altogether. Each hit from the zombie can permanently reduce your max HP PER HIT.
I've always liked cranking dex for hit chance in the first game in first few levels.
Also starting on a sorc, a barrel can kill you. Also chance to hit really stuffs you up
Love seeing this. It's still a little bizarre that, as an ARPG enthusiast, DM has still never dipped into Grim Dawn. It's top two for me, but I would imagine top 5 for most people. At least it's still going to be there whenever he finally gets to it!

been decades since I've played this game. The first time I found the Butcher I spent more time running. Opening that door and hearing "fresh meat" was enough to send me packing. One of my most Iconic moments in gaming.
10 minutes in and my boy is losing all his gear by not repairing it...
How he always ignored the red armor sign on the right. He got 3 or more items destroyed because he didnt get them repaired. This is what I call learning resistant
You would have made your life much easier if you had fought in bottlenecks. Doorways, or those narrow passages in the Lava realms, the demons kept you in the stun lock.
Diablo 1 was much more tactical than the sequels.

This was a truly fun video to watch… this was the game the started it all, I’m glad you recognized it being great… to even better understand, you have to remember this was 1996… and it all just blew our minds back then. My only tip, even as a Warrior… gotta use some more magic to freeze or rang e attack those mages/succubi.

Shrines were such a pain in this game. Having to save before each one as it could remove stats or change weapon damage at the cost of buffing armor class. Wish they would remaster this.
Fully voice acted characters in 1997 feels pretty impressive. I guess it was a post-DOOM world at that point, but we were still sort of working with sticks and rocks as far as computing is concerned.

This game, made in the 90's, was the start of my gaming addiction. Some people have heroin, cocaine, or pills... I have Diablo.

Crazy Diablo 1 is a strategy game, not a cast every skill under the sun and it kills everything game. This is why the Diablo series died after Diablo 2.
The first part was the best. What i like most are Hell Knights.
Makes me wanna play again. My first character was a warrior, too, the running of ranged was a big problem, and to some extent, it still is. P.S. Griswold's Edge is *the* weapon to use against Diablo, but on my first playthrough, I never got that quest, because it's random, but I found a two-handed sword of haste, which also did the job. I found that you need a weapon with "faster" or "fastest" attack to handle him. I only found Griswold's edge on my second playthrough, and it worked great, too.

Diablo 1 an all time favorite. Would love to see it get the resurrected treatment, but add a trading system. Make kings sword of haste and godly plate of the whale legit obtainable items.

This looks ancient, but it's pretty spectacular that ARPGs haven't come THAT far in 3 decades. Compare today's shooters to shooters in the 90s, it's like they're from different planets.
I dont think there's been enough innovation in ARPGs. The first step is getting rid of click to move. It's so antiquated and objectively inferior. Unpopular opinion but that is a hill I will die on. WASD should be the standard, fluid gameplay is being sacrificed for the sake of nostalgia and familiarity.
Look at V Rising, an anomaly of an isometric game. If you turn that into an ARPG it would be a juggernaut.

I enjoy D1, I like the mods for it which allows for replay-ability and more skills and play-styles. (Currently playing some of both "the Hell Mod v2/v3'). Playing the summoner/necro class in it.
Just found this link today, awesome!! I fired up my old D1 and I've about two levels into hell.
Got an old tale to tell... maybe 15+ years ago I'm playing a 100% legit char and it's me and a random working through dungeons online, and I get a awesome sword drop... he asks to see it so I drop it and he takes it and won't return...
So I exit and rejoin with my max char go through his portal and one shot him, taking my sword back.
Drop it in a safe spot in town and rejoin with my legit char to pick up.
Problem solved
The three characters of Diablo1 all met bad fate. The warrior claimed the soulstone and became the Dark Wanderer, the rogue became Blood Raven and the sorcerer became Horazon (The Summoner). I am not sure if it is canonical (the warrior is), but overall it is regarded as valid lore.
20:30 Gaming went mainstream and now we have whiny neo puritans crying about how everything is offensive and game companies more than happy to try to appeal to a mythical "modern audience" who doesn't buy games. Every time someone complains, in flies some fool like a moth to a flame to claim the censorship is no big deal. If it wasn't a big deal then why censor in the first place? Honestly I'm tired of it.

The acid spitters in Catacombs are kind of uncommon to run across, so that was pretty unlucky. Be glad is wasn't the more rare succubus group, which I've seen maybe twice in the years I've played this and it's pretty much impossible.
