The name Path of Exile is way nerdier than just taking it from the D2:LoD book. That poem is itself inspired by Old English lore and poem titled the Wanderer and there it uses the word wraeclast, which translates to path of exile. The reason the D2 devs put it in the book was because its a nod to Tolkien A.K.A the father of high fantasy and he got a lot of his inspiration from Old English history and lore.
One of the main reasons why i keep coming back to POE is not only because they made a good game but also their company is a lot more honest then most in the market.

Still blown away about the fact that Brian Weissman helped produce the game. I reached out to him years back to help me design a cEDH around Breya inspired by “The Deck”! Let’s just say my play group didn’t want to play with me no more 😂
I've said it for a few years now, and I'll say it again here: There needs to be a documentary tracking Path of Exile development. After Path of Exile 2 is released might be the right time. No other company has the experience GGG has with their length and development of a live service, free game. The pace of content--actually meaningful content--being added for YEARS is insane. It would be a very cool thing for the industry to I think add this doc to the series of game/developer docs that have been released.
I started in 2012 and I still remember getting to 72 and constantly dying to desync so I left the game. I would come back from time to time but I missed TONS of seasons. I only learned the mechanics of previous seasons the last two seasons. I cleared t1-t16 the first time this season. I really feel like I missed out on so much. I hope to see them make a video of the year to year, season to season changes.
GGG is a company that above everything else will always be able to pivot a bad idea into something worth playing which to me is the most important thing about being a live sevice dev
The "angel friend investor" is the goat. I wonder what his face looked like when they told him it would be free to pay. No wonder microtransactions are so expensive. We got to pay him back 😂. God I love GGG
Brian Weissman funded GGG because he knew that he was backing a winner. There is no way Brian would have funded just anyone, he knew there was a good chance of making his money back plus some. In the same way Steve Jobs was funded for Apple, the venture capitalist who funded Jobs said, "not anyone could just walk in and get US$150 000 off me," Steve Jobs was special and he knew it. Brian was the same with his mate at GGG. Though, there is still a massive amount of luck in all of this fr. The gaming community was also a lot smaller back in the day.
Not only do the supporter packs give you the points in value, only last week I found out you can "upgrade" the simple point packs I've previously bought to supporter packs, basically giving me the supporter pack's content for free, cuz already I paid the price. Effin amazing!
I know this reaction video has been up for weeks but if you're interested with the history of GGG, I strongly recommend watching GDC; "Designing Path of Exile to Be Played Forever"
The decision to split PoE2 off to its own game was a smart move, as excited as I am to play PoE2 in november, if the cost was to never be able to play the original again I would've been pretty sad.
I just hope they would give all players a bit more stash tabs, especially the more useful premium ones so there is actually no power divide, if you want more than that you can still buy more then
I am a POE fan from the very start, but please, do not forget that the days when we were talking about a little independet studio showing the big commercial ones how to bring something fresh and new are long over. 88 percent of the company belong to the chinsese Tencent and looking at the usual monetary systems for asian games, I fear for the long run.
When POE came out, it was a central refuge place for Diablo 2 players who were looking for a new ARPG...cause D3 you guys know.....sucks! I guess Diablo 2 will pass the torch to POE 2..POE 2 will lead the ARPG genre in the future.
Just want to share, beside the game dev division, PoE customer service is also really good, i have a problem with supporter pack point like 8PM in new zealand time, they reply my email right away and they fixed it on fuckin 3AM, who the f start working that early. xd
He also didn't mention that GGG almost went bankrupt before they launched. Money was running out and the only chance they had was launching the crowdfunding campaign and it being a success. And it was.
The stash tabs and cosmetics transferring is incredibly consumer friendly. The split game makes sense, but I hate that I have to pick one and stick with it. I don't have enough time to play both and hope to do the end game stuff. Still, it is what it is. I look forward to try sticking with POE 2 from the start
In the end of 2012 I was poor af and started making decent money on D3 actionhouse(sold smtg for $65). Even so, when I stumbled upon POE(think I saw Kripp playing it) I never looked back to D3
For those who weren't around at the time of path of exile funding and stuff like that. They benefited greatly off of how angry people were that Diablo 3 was not what they expected it to be. So I'm not sure - had Diablo 3 been a gritty gnarly game and a true successor to Diablo. 2 -Would Path of Exile actually be the game it is today or would it have ever gotten the funding that it truly needed? Probably not. But I'm glad it did. Top 3 favorite games of all time and I believe it is absolutely the greatest ARPG ever made.
A part of the initial playerbase (me being one of them) were simply looking forward to poe since 2009 and were simply not interested in Diablo 3 and never played it.
I just reinstalled Dungeon Siege 2 yesterday.;)) It's a shame that PoE started with a big desync issue... I've played it a lot less than wanted because of it... I'm looking forward to PoE2! Hope they fix the running animations, though!
Looking at the pre-release footage of PoE is so cool, the animations and effects were so basic and janky, definitely doesn't make you think the game is gonna be hype. Recently people were bashing Titan Quest 2's pre-release footage for this same thing, but the difference between TQ2's pre-release footage and TQ2 at launch could be just as great as the difference between PoE pre-release and PoE beta launch. Definitely should not be dismissed out of hand based on that footage alone.
I shit you not, if any indie game developers had a rich friend who would just fund anything from their pocket we would've seen so many PoE killers but sadly such a complex aRPGs require nothing less than 20+ dev team to just do all the coding not to mention the balancing and testing parts.
Devs are expensive, you're going you'll easily spend a million for 10 people a year. Yourself and your friends are maybe willing to eat some costs, but when you hire people youll have to pay competitively
The rich guy did not just fund and carry the whole operation over a long time... it seems he didn´t force any predetory monetization, neither any of those being typical in that times. I stopped playing but my friend, who still enjoys it, doesnt give a sh1t about microtransactions but buys the packages anyway, just to support the game. Maybe around every 500 hours it seems, and he put 4-5k hours in the game... junky
The real story is, they still take ps5 players money without hesitation, yet still won’t give us the upgrade Xbox has. Although I’ve spent thousands I can’t even play it anymore it freezes nonstop
Out of all the possible ideas, features and mechanics, wsad is absolutely the one i would ever be excited about the least. Here's to hoping the game doesn't feel like D4 feels with its thumb-based (mobile / console) movement controls... I truly hope the game feels like it's built for PC with a possibility to play on console if preferred, rather than the opposite.
Why sad ? As far as I can tell they only win from this. No matter how big the community is, never underestimate how insanely expensive game development on this level is.
I'm more surprised that GGG totally ignore the TOTALLY broken PS4 client and not a single word why their PS5 client is stuck in Sonys Certification process. They just point they finger at Sony, but I'm 100% sure the real problem is GGG's total lack of consoleprogramming skills to be honest. And not a word from the UA-camrs, too afraid to point finger at an ´bad gamecompany, it's not cool not to worship them whatever crap they put out. Just don't support this company until they get their shit together and fix the Playstation side of Path Of Exile!!! It's more buggy than Cyberpunk ever was, and that game was BAD!!! I can only assume PoE II will be just as bad on PS, are they really this bad or is someone paying them to f**k up the PS clients?! I start to wonder frankly...
Talk to anyone who develops for more than Windows and they will confirm that these 'certification' processes add at least two weeks to release times even for tiny patches. Unless you have some way to escalate the issue (Also known as threatening to end a million dollar contract) you're stuck in the slow lane. Can't speak to why it has so much trouble on the ps5 other than the fact that game dev is genuinely difficult and since every single platform has their own APIs to do any amount of graphics it makes the task of porting to console specifically difficult despite how much closer they are to PC infrastructure compared to how they were in the past. Also don't forget this is their custom engine. There's no option to 'build in console mode' like in unreal, unity etc. They have to hardcode the optimizations themselves. This is a good vid talking about the other direction. ua-cam.com/video/tF013HYQd2Q/v-deo.html 160 people is actually still a small company.
@@ferinzz Thanks, that would at least explain the buggy state of the game on Playstation, but it still leaves the fact that they don't communicate well, or rather, not at all with PS players. But what you say is true, I can only assume PoE2 will be just as bad on PS. GGG just don't seem to care about the most popular platform out there and that's a real shame imho.
@@PaladinZeke can't entirely blame them. There was a great video looking into the history of communication from GGG to the community. They've pretty much stopped talking outside of announcements due to a lot of hostility from the community, something that tends to grow along with the player count. :( I'd say, just because they aren't talking about it doesn't mean they don't care. There's just not much to say. Speaking personally, it's the part of my job that I hate the most. Having to send a weekly update to a client to tell them 'we're still working on this' but not being able to give details since most of it wouldn't be relevant. Since progress is about internal systems or finding the right person who has the contact who can add pressure to the issue or it's the bottom of the dev's current queue which has 50 other tasks. Have to be like a duck; calm and serene on the surface, paddle like heck underneath.

They've pretty much stopped talking outside of announcements due to a lot of hostility from the community, something that tends to grow along with the player count. :(
I'd say, just because they aren't talking about it doesn't mean they don't care.
