Hey guys, since editing the video, I've decided to not include the direct from China links in the video description - as purchases of such items may not be technically legal in some viewer's countries. That being said, I'm almost certain the second watch is a real Daniel Wellington. What do you think about that watch?
I have a possible explanantion for why it looks like a DW but not quite 100%: According to the book "Ghomorra" by Italian writer Roberto Salviano, clothes from Italian luxury brands are made by different factories. Those bid on who can produce cheapest, others can also compete and join that offer, the best products are then bought by the luxury company and sold. Those who do not quite match the standards are usually sold as these "counterfeit" products in dubious places. This might have happened with this 20$ "DW" as well. The factory started to produce for DW, then the dial ended up being slightly off and the holes not punched according to request, likely due to a communication issue. This then results in DW not buing them from the factory and those selling them on Alibaba for a steal just to cover production cost. Likely the batch got sold out or DW forbade them to sell it which is why the offer can not be found anymore.
You had to compare the unbranded Aliexpress original to DW, not a Chinese DW counterfeit, that is, indeed, illegal to import and sell/purchase within the EU and most certainly also in the US and other Western countries. That said, these are identical watches, most certainly manufactured at the same factory. And so will be the unbranded 5-10$ Aliexpress original.
İt’s the same watch 100% they are dropshipping with their brand on it Can you please send me the link of the chinese one Ben ? İt’s not illegal in my country :)
MagnetPull, if they would try that practice in Western hemisphere, they would face legal disputes for trademark infringement, and that won't be cheap at all. They can only do this because they're in China, where no one cares and where the government makes it difficult for Western companies/trademark holders to sue the infringing parties.

Why do you think companies like Timex and Seiko do not do social media marketing to keep up with brands like MVMT and Daniel Wellington? Can't think of any reason.
I think about this all the time. My guess is that the companies are older and run by older people who don't see the importance of these modern marketing means. When you stick to your values and priorities, the competition beating you isn't the first thing you worry about. My 2 cents.
As Felix said, I'm sure the bigwigs at the top of the companies are older people, who don't have much of a clue about digital marketing. As a result they almost give companies like DW and MVMT a free reign to dominate Instagram and UA-cam. I've emailed Timex before and they never even respond, which sucks and is proof they're behind the times
I live in Taiwan (I am from Belgium) and I can assure you that Seiko or Citizen do a lot of digital marketing here. They don't do social media influencers though, people wearing their watches in the ads are famous local actors and they also do a bunch of ads in the street ^^ I'd say that they don't want to fall in the "fashion watches" category too, having ads all over social media might give them this kind of image
Btw, if you go on a FB page, you go straight to the "info and ads" section to see any ads the page is currently running, here is for Seiko in TW : facebook.com/pg/Seiko.Taiwan/ads/?ref=page_internal
Ludovic got it right. Reputable brands do both, digital and traditional marketing, but in professional way, with real vip and famous models, spending millions, working together with well known design and marketing studios and focusing on branding and value. You will never see Apple, nor Armani, nor BMW, nor Rolex, nor B&O, nor Seiko advertising through screaming influencers and FB/IG ad spams. Guess why...
I almost bought a DW as my first watch when I didn't know much about watches, thinking it was a good price and value for money. Goes to show that how well marketing and distribution can work if the consumer is not knowledgeable in an area
This same exact video format can be applied to a lot of products, BEATS headphones for example. Just order an original BEATS and two replicas. Same conclusion can be made.
Same with Paul Valentine watches. They are stainless steel but I can buy the same for $15 instead of $125. I literally have $15 stainless steel mesh watches with the same quality, weight and sleekness from Aliexpress
You can do that but you could just leave out the part with the "real" DW's. Just go ahead, buy a lot of those "fake" watches and sell them on eBay. Just say your wife didn't like it or you wanted to give it to your grandma and she passed away.
My friend has a DW watch and she just "hates" people who buy "copies". 🤣 When she herself is paying 5-10 times for the thing just to pay for the Instagram advertisements. 🤣🤣🤣
Don't be, you bought into a watch that looks good and does what it's supposed to do. If the marketers behind DW hadn't shown you the watch then you would have never bought and appreciated the design.
I own a Seiko automatic, and would probably not buy a Daniel Wellington watch even for 5$. But I'd be the first to sign up for Daniel Wellington's marketing course. 😄
My dad used to tell me that all these branded products - the ones you buy at the store vs on a third party website/ flea market all come from the same factory, same materials used, same workmanship; just that the ones sold at the store are FAR more exorbitantly priced for "authenticity"
I've worked in fashion all my life and I tell people that when you order say 1000 items in a factory they will produce 10000 and sell the difference on parallel markets. Many big brand fakes are made in the same factory as the originals, you can visit a factory and not know that on the assembly line are both products. A Watch will cost about 1 dollar, sneakers the same, sometimes cheaper, jeans of good quality are 6 dollars and a fully lined pure wool up market mens suit is 12 dollars. T-shirts are 20 cts to 50 cts ,,,, basically you can divide the shop product by 18 and get an idea of factory cost which is not production cost. If a store sells an item at 60% off they are still making a profit. The label I worked for at LVMH paid 16 euros for a purse/handbag ! sold in store at 400 euros.
Ben, it would've been interesting if you could've possibly disassemble them both and taken a look at the movement and the overall insides. Who knows: maybe even THAT is identical :p
Great Vid!! I remember about 6 years ago when DW was a relatively unknown brand that you would only see sold through online stores, and was constantly on special. In fact I actually bought one during a mid year sale, was like 50% off retail price. I also remember some time later I got a promotional email from that store, and was surprised to see the exact same watch had more than doubled in retail price lol. Actually because of this video I just did a quick search on the same online store I bought the watch from all those years ago, and the same watch has now almost tripled it's retail price.
Thank you for this video. I only recently bought my first watch (ever. In 23 years. I know, I know) I was looking up Daniel Wellington, but I figured I'd set aside money and invest in one later. Dumb of me to assume that price equals quality, I know. I just assumed they'd be having great watches, since they're a watch-only company as far as I know (as opposed to clothing brands that also make some watches, riding on their brand names)
Very informative video, thank you! I bought my DW around 4 years ago when the hype wasn’t as huge and was convinced they’re great quality. In defence of DW I must say though that I’ve never once had to replace the battery in it since the purchase, unlike my tissot watch that died after less than 2 years :/
You definitely saved my life. I was about to by one of those watches and I seriously thought it was a great investment. I guess I am going to keep my hard earned money for something much more important. Thanks!
Watches aren’t an investment, they are jewelry… And if you are trying to buy them as an investment; you are wasting your money. Maybe buy stock in a watch/timepiece company. That would be investing. By the way, almost everything is much more important than a watch. You have a clock on your phone. Buy your family food. If saving 100-200$ is saving your life, then you shouldn’t be buying any watches. They are a luxury item.

Just found your channel not that many weeks ago. And I'm absolutely loving your videos. High-quality stuff, keep it up!
Thanks Sebastian!
I almost bought a DW as my first watch when I didn't know much about watches, thinking it was a good price and value for money. Goes to show that how well marketing and distribution can work if the consumer is not knowledgeable in an area
The 20GBP one was probably excess stock after slight changes in manufacturing.
You should do an argos watch grab, love my leather strap ben sherman and it only cost around £30
So you could buy a bunch of real and fake DW watches and then refund the fake ones to DW and then sell the real ones
Both watches are real in this video.
You can just resell them for $100 each, because “my wife didn’t like it.”
@@22Sangre I think you're missing the point
You can do that but you could just leave out the part with the "real" DW's. Just go ahead, buy a lot of those "fake" watches and sell them on eBay. Just say your wife didn't like it or you wanted to give it to your grandma and she passed away.
@@Brainman_2331 She passed away because your tried giving her a Daniel Wellington lmao
**Watches the video**
**Looks down at the Daniel Wellington on my wrist**

My friend has a DW watch and she just "hates" people who buy "copies". 🤣 When she herself is paying 5-10 times for the thing just to pay for the Instagram advertisements. 🤣🤣🤣
Mate, this blew my socks off!
I almost bought this watch! But then i realized I'm broke. So i just settled to 40$ Timex watch... Has not disappointed me up to this date.
I bought one in my country a year ago for like $80 - I thought I had a great deal and now I feel so ripped off lmao
Don't be, you bought into a watch that looks good and does what it's supposed to do.
If the marketers behind DW hadn't shown you the watch then you would have never bought and appreciated the design.
I would suggest that the £20 watch may be from a batch that failed qc and therefore was sold cheaply in the surrounding community.
Hats off to your research. Make more content such this.
Daniel Wellington is a rip-off fashion watch out of China. You likely bought the replica from the same company that makes the Daniel Wellington.
Fairfield is more accurate. Check it out. I own one Fairfield myself. It's great.
Can you make a video on how to find good watches from Ali express or wherever?
I have never been disappointed since I became a customer of gussl. Their timepieces are of exceptional quality.
OMG That's insane! I promoted that brand and now really regret it
Miklashe there is nothing to regret lol all your other highly priced products come from China too
Can someone please send the link of the watch please
Daniel Wellington is the 'Beats' of Watches
does anyone know the link for that $20 DW?
I’d buy a Dan Henry rather than the Daniel Wellington
Hi VL T, I show the movement comparison later in the video!
@@BenArthur Love the fact that you took the time to respond to my stupidity :)
😂 no worries haha
Plzz give us link we can't find it by the way love from India
Someone post a link. I can hardly find any dw watches on AliExpress.
sam here, all i find are straps
Links will only be online for 30 minutes
Lenalin Aegyo why?
unsicheresgangbild Western w worldd companies are quick to sue. Sames goes for most replicas on AliExpress on these days
*daniel wellington left the chat*
Very informative video, thank you! I bought my DW around 4 years ago when the hype wasn’t as huge and was convinced they’re great quality. In defence of DW I must say though that I’ve never once had to replace the battery in it since the purchase, unlike my tissot watch that died after less than 2 years :/
i wonder, the article you showed us on aliexpress doesn't have any brand logo on it, but you got one with a logo?
I know haha, I ordered one without a logo but it arrived with Daniel Wellington on it!
@@blakeannunziato6837
Do I really have to say that I was 19 at the time and I clearly had some money to spend? No family to take care of or any other charges involved, don't worry. You are judging someone you don't even know. The only thing you achieved was coming off as rude. Have a good day man.
This isn't just brands like DW, take a used Gucci or Michael Kors to an auction house and see what the resale value is. Then do the same with maybe a seiko 5 or tissot.
i am in China these days. ..
so should i buy the cheap one ??
yesterday i went to downtown i found that DW are too expensive there. ..then i checked the price online from a Chinese shopping app 拼多多 and it was very cheap. .
at shop it is around 990 to 1450 Chinese yuan. .but online the same product is on 158 to 388 Chinese yuan. ...
i got a watch from a company that sells exactly copy of daniel welington with their own logo, and they are made in the same fabric in china and he told med that it cost around 2dollar for them to buy.
Link pls
@@pokinpeskov108 i got for free from the owner, and i cant find it anymore.
If you spent $230 on a Daniel Wellington.. well you just played yourself
Can you please me link of AliExpress watch
scroll down and click on the link for the 40mm model, the 40mm one has more reviews
I know this is probably illegal but has anyone found the same dw watch replica ordered from AliExpress anywhere?
I tried searching in AliExpress but wasn't able to find any 🤷🏻♂️
Can you share that website from where you bought that replica
Maybe you could do a follow-up video a couple of months later and let us know how the £20 watch is holding up.
Hi Kenny, I may do so. I'll be doing a dedicated review of the Daniel Wellington in a while, so I mention it in that video at the end 👍
Anybody got any links??
I still wonder why Daniel Wellington is considered a brand instead of the scam it actually is
Link for the replica pls (or the name of the watch on AliExpress) pls

"Brand is latin for irrational markup" - Prof. Scott Galloway.
Its not really on quality that make them popular but the appeal and aesthetic of their watches. They’re the one who introduced those gorgeous dual/triple color straps.
You should have also bought the unbranded versions on ali express
I wanted to keep it as close as possible for this comparison. Should I in a future video?
@@BenArthur Yes!
@@xXRealXx then it wouldn't be an illegal forgery
Ben, you definitely should stick to the unbranded originals for your comparisons and not to illegal counterfeits. Not only for proving what these wannabe "luxury brands/watches" are in real, but also to prevent possible legal issues.
@@JustARandomFio It is completely legal to buy counterfeit items for personal use.
Hello, have you tried changing the movement,or glass.?
the £20 dollar one are daniel wellington with reasonable price

Thank you so much for making this video! I purchased the womens watch from the same store as you, and it is literally the exact same as a DW!!

I like the way you gave credit to other youtubers for using their images 🤣
how did you open the back of the watches? what tools should i get to do this?
You basically exposed DW. What an amazing video! absolutely brilliant. This proves that you can sell anything on social media!
well, expose what? overpricing? you could expose rolex as well following this logic, since now you can find rolex daytona replicas with a 4130 clone movement for around 600$
OMG I am so grateful to have come across this video, thank you!
im a bit late, but can anyone find the link to the replica 25£ watch? cheers

I can't find any Miyota movement watches for anywhere near that price on AliExpress.

In my experience, a fashion brand watch can still offer value. I bought a tommy hilfiger with an automatic eta for 100USD. It was on 50 percent discount though.
Guys, if you have a link to the £20 DW. Please send me the link. Asking for a friend.
U got it yet?
You showed this, I got baffled and I'm never going to waste time and money on a real Daniel Wellington watch. Thank you!
Imagine how much the profit of the company if a reseller only sell it for $20
I am not sure if you have done this already, but there some interesting watches from China called starking. I got one for 50 dollars and its automatic, stainless steel plus sapphire crystal.
Could please someone send me the link where I could buy this watch ?😁
@Lysol Brother , Can You Send me the link to access her profile in Ali Express ?
Was in Alibaba but all products got removed .. I searched everywhere to find another website but unfortunately I never found one to buy it
There's this store in Germany called "real" and they are like Walmart. They have a website where they sell their products and I went to that website and I was looking for watches and found a Daniel Wellington for 9999€. I hope no one would ever buy one for that price. You could get a brand new Rolex for that amount of money.
How do you remove the glass from these watches.
how did he know that he was buying a DW Replica from Aliexpress when there was no DW Logo in the pictures of the watch?
Exactly Vali, I ordered a generic watch, but it arrived with the DW logo on anyway. I labelled it as 'replica', but it seems to be the same watch
You can check the reviews and pictures of customers.
The Daniel wellington watches we buy from the official website are original or not???
