      pulifric look harder. You can get sapphire around that price. If you want accurate time use your phone. If you want something with heritage grab a Seiko or Orient Automatic. People pass on their Swiss or Japanese automatics. No one will pass on those garbage overpriced Chinese watches.

    Couldn't agree more. All valid points. General rule I follow in addition: if the brand is a clothing company and not a watch company, it's probably not worth getting. Generally they'll be cheap watches made by another company under license with the brand label slapped onto it.

    Swiss quartz is not as a rule more desireable than Japanese, it's just that the japanese do all price ranges while the swiss stay away from the lowest end. The best quartz movements, both in absolute measures, and relative to price, are still Japanese.
    Edit: Oh, for a moment there I thought you said a Swiss movement is «more desirable than A Japanese one", as if in general, but you said "THE Japanese one", as in this particular movement. Well in that case you are off course right. My bad. I would however, indeed say that a 10$ Japanese quartz is more desirable than a 10$ Swiss quartz.

    Not a fair comparison as DW can be had for around 75 bucks online while Linjer sell their watches for 3X the price through their website. Anyhow, both are shiny pieces of pure crap. If your budget is sub 200, look at Orient and Seiko.

    • @BrockMcGoff
      @BrockMcGoff  7 років тому +11

      True. Maybe you should have mentioned that in the video so people know that DW is not just lower quality but also much lower price. Funny thing is that you can find replicas of DW online for like 10 bucks that are of exact same quality as the real thing, probably made in the same factory in China too haha.

  • @khcstewie
    @khcstewie 7 років тому +3

    I appreciate the effort that you put into comparing the two watches and giving a basic outline of what to look for in a watch, but it's hard to see it as an honest review knowing that Linjer sponsors you. I mean, how can you say that this is not a sales pitch with a straight face when you have a discount code in the video description? I understand that part of what keeps a fashion channel alive is the brand sponsorship so I'm not mad at you for keeping the channel sustainable; what does bother me is you trying to disguise the product you're being paid to promote as your genuine recommendation to those who are new to quality watches. If you do even the bare minimum amount of research into watches in this price range, you know that there are watches with a similar aesthetic with far better quality from more established/reliable companies. With that in mind, maybe pairing up with a subpar Kickstarter brand for a video centered around watch quality wasn't the best idea. I think something like a style recommendation video that doesn't revolve so much around the brand but still discusses fashion tips with watches was better suited for a sponsored video like this. Even if you were to keep the format the same, AT LEAST don't treat us like we're stupid and say "this is not a sales pitch." Just embrace that it's a sponsorship, be open and honest about it, and hope that the video will at least be a gateway for people to search out better options. At least that way you're being transparent with your audience. Brock, I love your stuff but deceptive marketing like this infuriates me.
    For those of you who are looking for actual quality at this price range, check out r/watches' buying guide; it's far more comprehensive and not sponsored:

      I mean the components. 90% of the components are made in China then later assembled elsewhere in Japan. Most Japanese industries heavily rely on Chinese imports of parts.
      It is almost wrong to say Japanese brands make these products since they pretty much only assemble the product

    actually, most minimalistic watches like linjer, brathwait, dw etc are more of aesthetic. Though its still subjective to one's taste. I personally like minimalist designs which is really simple and clean type like those linjer, brathwait thought i don't have one. I think its like different target market. If you're really into quality you wouldn't really buy these. but if you're into aesthetic only then its good.
    Names of the brand often displayed in the case also plays a part. I personally think seiko watch are ugly af. Especially the brand name itself SEIKO. Its just me maybe. but i do see some of seiko's minimalistic watch are really nice, just that the brand name makes it ugly for me. so i still think its subjective to one's taste.

    I have been on a watch kick. I have bought Hamilton mechanical, Seiko auto (2) and a couple of Casio. Also my first solar Citizen eco drive. I have a Seiko 5 auto that I have had for twenty years, beat up but still runs well. I also bought a couple of LL Bean field watches and have been wearing them to work. Most of the watches I have bought in the last ten years have been Casio. What do you think of these brands. And if I thin out my mass buys how much will I loose? 50%? IMO the Citizen will do everything I need and keep the Bean for a work beater along with some old Casio.

      Tissot watches are ugly and almost never come without a day/date complication, which leads to asymmetry on the dial. Fashion watches are much more attractive than tissot and especially seiko watches. Swiss watchmakers need to get with the times. Minimalism is the style now. Less is more.

    The most I'd spend on a Quartz watch is $50. Get a timex for $20, Casio for $15, etc.
    I like to compare a lot of watches to a tissot for eta movements and an orient star for Japanese movements.
    For a watch enthusiast, you'll buy your own straps: metal, leather or other material. The 2 things most watch enthusiasts look into is the movement (in house or stock, and grade) and the metal the case is made out of. Stainless steel is okay, 304L is better, titanium is even better, and precious metals are on a whole different level.
    So when you hear about a (example) brass, in house modded v-7750 with 80hr power reserve going for $300, you do everything in your power to reserve one.

    If you are concerned about the leather, there are a couple of options.
    1) swap out the strap. Nearly every watch of this price range or higher you can swap out the strap.
    2) All leather cracks. Use leather conditioner on it every few months to keep it nice and supple. It also cleans the leather and allows the leather to stay good for years to come.
    Genuine while not the best leather, it is not bad. Once again, use conditioner on the leather and it will last longer.
    While most people buy watches based upon the strap (I am guilty of this), you can change that and put on a much higher quality strap that looks better than the original.
    I feel like the only main difference between these two is the glass, which both have their advantages as you have mentioned. I prefer crystal, but it is a preference.
    Just my two cents, still a good video, and I think it is very informative.

  • @christophercoey7804
    @christophercoey7804 7 років тому

    Both watches are cheap in the nasty sense imo. The minimalist's case is too thick for a dress watch, and the watch is too boring for casual attire. The worst things about it though. A) Look at the crystal again in the video (it is termed crystal in terms of horology - not glass) at acute angles you can't read the dial at all, it is a complete blur: that is because a cheap sapphire crystal has been used. I'd take an average mineral crystal over that - even the DW watch does not suffer from this problem. B) Second hands on quartz watches, especially cheap watches almost never line up and it can be clearly seen in your video that the minimalist watch suffers from this exact problem. The second hand does not line up - again the DW is better for not having a second hand. Better to not have the hand, than to have it look that bad, plus to have the second hand kind of goes against the name and branding idea of the watch to begin with. C) The case on the minimalist looks like a nasty, big block of steel (it lacks elegance). Forgetting the comparisons...your video misses out an awful lot. How robust is a given watch? Where is the need for form to match function? That is to say, people should choose a watch that matches their lifestyle. An SKX 007 watch can be had in this price range. It has a very robust automatic movement, it has hardlex crystal which on the face of it should be inferior to the sapphire on this watch, except it is not, it's superior, as the hardlex allows for a flat relatively thin crystal, that is very clear, suffers from non of the problems of this minimalist watch/no blurring - and the hardlex crystal allows for the watch to also be a fully certified dive watch - with 200 metres water resistance. The SKX is also not a homage watch, but a stone cold classic watch that can be found in the collections of people who also own high end Rolexs, Pateks etc. Vastly superior watch for less money. Now, not everyone wants a dive watch. If people are more interested in dress watches, or sports/casual or other tool watches, again their are vastly superior options. For not much more money, especially if buying used, someone interested in a dress watch could buy a Seiko Sarb 033 or Seiko Sarb 035 - Black or cream dial. Both watches come with a quality sapphire crystal unlike the minimalist. Both watches come on a steel bracelet with solid end links and a solid steel deployment clasp, the watches have brushed and polished finishing, both are elegant, both are 23 jewel movements, that are also allow hand winding and both watches are hackable and also have see through casebacks - quality signed crown etc. Again vastly superior. Seiko 5s represent cheaper alternatives that are still superior. Citizen is also a brand in this price bracket that offers vastly superior options. For sports watches at affordable prices people can look at Casio G-Shocks, for tool watches Hamilton with their basic Khaki field watch - as with the Seiko Sarb watches, Hamilton offer fine detailing, superior leather straps, an engraved clasp, engraved crown, superior sapphire again. If people want quartz around this price you could look to a Seiko Flightmaster that offers a chronograph and additional timezone, or maybe at a push evn a Citizen Nighthawk - both offer superior cases, additional timezones and useful rotating tool bezels, You can't just do a 1,2,3 of watch buying it doesn't work in such simple terms. Though if you were going to do that - you do realise that you haven't covered case size, case depth or lug length, never mind lug width? For dress watches you want to ensure the case depth is not too much, so the watch slips easily under the cuff. For general wear you want to match the case size to the wrist size, otherwise you can look ridiculous and buy something that is way too small or conversely end up buying a monstrosity. One of the most important and often overlooked considerations in buying a watch is the lug length, as it is this measurement that will dictate, more than most how well or badly any watch fits the wearer. A 42mm pilot watch might have short lugs and fit a small wrist and look good, whereas a small 38mm field watch could have very long lug length and only really fit a man with a 7.5/8inch wrist. These things are key considerations in buying a watch. Lug width will dictate strap options, as will any notion of a built in or propitiatory strap design. Quite a few watches these days have been designed with idiotic dimensions, such as 17mm, 21mm, 23mm lug widths. These massively limit after market strap options, and this needs to be considered by people who like to change up their straps, those considering a NATO or Zulu strap ect. This is also a consideration in terms of the long term and eventual strap replacement. Instead of a poor checklist, it is FAR better that those considering a purchase - do a lot of research into all of the considerations that need to be taken into account to avoid a mistaken purchase. Form and function - a watch that matches your lifestyle and meets your requirements - that should come first and foremost. Fit - those measurements - are critical as well. And you want to see as many options as possible in term of style and brands etc. For that I would strongly recommend going into stores with the sole purpose of trying watches on - whilst avoiding any urge to buy. This will automatically give anyone a feel for such things. And I would also strongly recommend looking in on a youtube watch channel such as The Urban Gentry - because the guy behind that channel has hundreds of watch videos going back a few years and it contains all the kind of stuff I am speaking of and he rates watches of all differing styles according to the "bang for your buck" and "price range" plus his comments are full to the brim with watch aficionados offering their views which add colour and balance and much needed discussion - this even allows you to understand the pros and cons of many possible watch purchases. Sorry for being critical. On one level I get what you are doing and certainly some of the advice is good and better than no advice, but as a watch collector I just see a lot of issues and pitfalls in this 1,2,3 - a,b,c. I am sure some of what I said can be disputed and subjectively taken to task as well - I just think getting to know the subject at hand is a better route to success when it comes to buying watches.

I do however think that if the quarts movements gets the job done equally good, the cheeper one would be to prefer as it brings moore value for the money. Also 5he dials on the DW looked elegant and not as rough as the other brand.

    Should I get Brathwait watch as my first watch? I only want one watch and not going to wear it as a style, just want a simple clean watch that I can read time easily(what a watch should be) and good modern style. How about Linjer minimalist watch with tan leather strap?
    I like a watch with light brown leather strap and white face minimalist design, numerical number or bar dial both ok and if the second hand is yellow color.

    just to add to the point about Japanese quarts vs Swiss quarts, Japanese movements can be just as good. the Grand Seiko has a quarts movement that is off 5 seconds max per year which is just as good if not better than the Swiss quarts movements. in fact Seiko invented quarts movement. chineese movements are pretty much always very cheap budget movements, but when it comes to Japanese vs Swiss, you have to judge on a case by case basis.

      Not quite. GS has three types of movements: Mechanical, Quartz and the Spring Drive. The Spring Drive is still a pure mechanical movement, but uses a quartz regulator to brake the seconds hand, keeping the time more accurate.

But if you are 6'6" and an ex-football player ( US Football ) with a 23 cm / 9 inch wrist, like I am, even a 40 mm watch looks like a child's watch on the wrist. I get around it by wearing dress watches that are rectangular....that way they can be larger from lug to lug than the normal watch, and still not be 50 mm's from 9-3.

    You make good points but in all honesty at this price point and sort of style I would recommend Citizens Stiletto line of watches.
    For a start both companies you mention are not longstanding watch companies which is not a problem other than if you are spending this sort of money it would be nice to have a watch from a well established watch company.
    Secondly both movements are nothing special, the ronda is no better than the other.
    With the Citizen you get eco-drive so you are getting a watch that you are not going to have to change the battery with. You also get sapphire crystals on the Stilettos.
    Simply it runs rings over both options you have given for the same price and in fact if you buy online even cheaper!
    www.citizenwatch.eu/kollektion/stiletto/

    • @BrockMcGoff

      The Stiletto is a great line. Slightly different aesthetic than the Linjer watches, though (they are true minimalist watches). I love the size of the Stilettos, but I do prefer the three hand + date movement of the Linjer.
      Edit: I agree with your point of buying established brands. But also, every brand was new at one point. There's plenty of room for new watchmakers, and some may be much bigger and more reputable in the future.

    well like others mentioned before me, if you want a nice budget watch look no further than Seiko, Orient or Citizen. In addition to this i would like to mention other notable european brands like Skagen , Junkers and Zeppelin. I think the last two are produced by the same company. • @Fonetiker
      @Fonetiker 5 років тому

      Try not to mix in a Fossil brand in a recommondation . . ? Other than that do I agree. Just feel like adding that some of the problem with the other mention brands is that (at least the three first) dont offer minimalistic design (similar to DW). Junkers have minimalism, but are any of them under 40mm? Minimalism is as much about negative space as positive, and often minimalistic watch design are just blown up in size and it doesnt work as well. Which is some of the problem I have with DW.

    Good notes re: leather. Various nations have laws stipulating terms that describe the part of the hide ('full grain' must have the outer skin portion, the toughest and densest, even if it is skived or thinned down to a mm or two thick) and 'genuine leather' can be as he describes, basically ground beef, with a veneer of vinyl or acrylic which creates the finish, but will wear or dissolve away. Still, these appear to be much more about designer styling than durable watches, so fashion will always drive the price, and neither will be around in three years.

    DW watches really are a total rip-off. You can get the same quality from an analogue Casio for $20 (which contains a Seiko-Epson quartz movement of higher quality than the DW, and a case and strap of at least the same quality). You can get a Pulsar quartz watch in the sales for perhaps $35-40 which will be much better made (styling may not be to everyone's tastes as they are essentially just cheap Seiko watches). And if you actually have $250 you're well into Seiko, or top-end Citizen with radio-controlled time, or a Swiss piece like a Tissot. Why does anyone buy DW when I believe another UA-camr established that some of the "knock-offs" on AliExpress are 100% identical down to the movement used.
    The only good thing about the DW is that Miyota movement. It really is all you'll ever need from a quartz watch - reliable, accurate and long-lasting. The Japanese have the mechanicals totally licked, they just work.

  • @jamesfreeman7954
    @jamesfreeman7954 6 років тому

    DW $229 off their website is a rip off. The Timex Fairfield has the same look and feel and cost only around $60-80 off Timex's website. I think if someone really really wants a DW it's best to get it off Amazon for just under $100, although I've heard some DW on Amazon are fake so... be weary of that.

    Inherent value? Neither of these watches will ever have any inherent value over the amount that was paid. They may have some perceived value...to the person who fell for whatever sales pitch they believed. Paying extra for a Swiss movement just so you can have "swiss movement" on the dial, is just as bad as paying extra for a "DW" on the dial. But IMHO both of these watches are fashion watches/accessories and in that vain, "inherent value" is really a silly discussion.

    • @BrockMcGoff
      @BrockMcGoff  7 років тому

      +mafioso so you're saying that full grain leather isn't inherently more valuable than genuine leather? Sapphire crystal isn't inherently more valuable than mineral glass? The Modest Man Full grain leather is more valuable than genuine leather. Sapphire is more valuable than mineral glass.
