This channel is the first one I've seen to mention that Casio. As a diehard Casio fan, I couldn't believe I only heard of that watch now!
@@hicturbaest Let's see: round face, colour, markers round the outside, couple of hands... yep, definitely a stolen design. No other watch has ever had those ideas in their look and feel.
@@interestedbystander196 The design comes very close to Nomos´, there are also other players with similar design traits. The Nomos Tagente design was initially stolen from fellow german watchmaker Stowa. But go into split-screen, and scroll through Nomos lineup (focus on the Neomatik line) and keep a picture of the Casio on the side. You will soon notice that the Bauhaus-styling, overall layout, and applied indices every five minutes come shockingly close to the Nomos Orion Neomatik ref. 392 (link: nomos-glashuette.com/de/orion/orion-neomatik-392?number=392#). Case shape, dial layout, markers and indices, even the bright orange/red small seconds hand at 6 o´clock. Virtually the only differences are the non-oxidized hands and slightly bolder, Tangente-styled lugs. I have no doubt Casio makes great watches, neither am I one to dispute upon an original design - but this Casio doesn't have one.
Nice to see Timex being presented as a better alternative to a Daniel Wellington. There's an old US TV Timex advert on youtube, that demonstrated the build quality of a Timex. They fixed a Timex 'Marlin' (a cheap watch at the time) to an arrow head (to the head, not the shaft) and got an archer with a long bow to shoot it through a pain of glass that had a tank of water behind it. The bow was drawn fully, so that the arrow flew with maximum velocity, with the watch (not the arrow head) smashing through the glass and landing in the water, with a fantastic crash. The watch had no signs of damage and was still working perfectly. I'd love to see a Daniel Wellington try that stunt.
@@BensWatchClub I've only just started collecting and I NEED that Casio Sapphire! It seems its been discontinued though. Short of trying ebay or other auction sites, is there any other places I can try that I might not have heard about?
I have never had a Casio (and I've owned a LOT of them) that disappointed me. The very cheapest and first (bought fourteen years ago) is STILL going on its original supposedly eight year life battery. Most of the digitals I would prefer to have bigger numbers (getting old now), but they are all tough as old boots, even the non G-Shocks. You can't go wrong with a Casio.
You missed the Citizens ultrathin! 4 mm thick, sapphire glass, minimalist design, crocodile strap AND Eco-drive. One of the most elegant watches on the market, the best one for this price point.
Seiko's chronograph watches with the tachymeter are no-brainer alternatives if you have cash to buy a DW. Not only they have better build quality, they look way more premium for that price range, which is what DW claims to do but in fact do the opposite.
Don't get me wrong, I have watches from all of those brands but Casio is the god of Japanese watch making at affordable prices. Casio is equivalent to affordability.

Other channels or reviewrs seem to be like living in a cloud out of this world as they reccommend watches of thousands of dollars. Thank you so much, you actually make me appreciate watches and foster me to start a good collection with some good worthly pieces and according to my low budget.
Oh man I did not know those Casio Sapphires were a thing! This is why this watch channel is rapidly becoming one of my favourites (and everyone I've shared it with at work agrees) Can you do a giveaway of that Casio? 👀😇
Another great video Ben! I was close to buying a MVMT while I was in school because I wanted a dress watch that could fit under a shirt cuff. I'm glad that I put it off due to the high price tag; I ended up getting a Seiko SUP880 (similar design to a Cartier Tank) for about $90 and couldn't be happier with it.
The most awkward conversations I have had in the recent years are when somebody asks my opinion on DW, MVMT, or such similar brands. There is not a single praiseworthy feature for these brands and I am left almost speechless when I don't want to hurt their feelings.

Madly appreciate this video. Initially bought a Nordgreen as my first watch. Pretty underwhelmed with the look when it came and then from your channel understood that it's pretty overpriced for the watch you get. Sent it back and now I've ended up with and orient bambino. Couldn't be happier
I love the story behind Daniel Wellington because the guys like I loved the "simplicity" of the Rolex submariner which is a dive watch that's super durable and has lots of utility and some would say an over crowded dial with text. So he made the exact opposite.
It is truly crazy, a relentless marketing campaign, turned cheap china made quartz watches into desirable objects, you'll find several DW shops in London and prices are frankly outrageous, especially if you think about the kind of quality you get for the money, that paired with the laziest design you could possibly think of
Thank you for basing your recommendations on the viewer's preferences, rather than going into hard insider watch knowledge - which you undoubtably have. I truly appreciate it! With others I always have the feeling of being lowkey judged. haha
Some of my friends bought watches recently. One a DW, another, a MVMT. I did a bit of research and always hear those two referenced as cheap watches to avoid. I went for an Orient open heart with sapphire glass. I asked one friend about his mvmt watch and he actually said he's not wearing it anymore cos the strap broke lol he has it only a year or so.
I love the open heart Orient Bambino! I have relatively large wrists for a gal and the watch fits perfectly. It's also really good looking and the blue I got it in suits most of my dressier wardrobe! Definitely has a lot more wrist time than my "women's watches" which imo tend to look a little pretentious with the way it's decorated.
I'm glad I decided to do a lot of research on watches, I almost bought a Vincero. (This is why I always do my research, whether it's watches, boots, hats, etc.)
I say that none of the watches you shown have the thing I was looking for as the same as the Daniel Wellington watches. One thing I like in Daniel Wellington watches is they dont have the annoying tic tac noise of the seconds pointer in the watch. Appart from that great video from you.
I like that Junkers Bauhaus is on the list, I own Zeppelin with moonphase, which is the sister brand to Junkers, and it has the same case, plexiglass, leather strap etc. and I can say that he quality of the watch is incredible. Those Germans did a realy good job there. Recently I had a chance to experience a Tommy Hilfiger watch which is similarly priced as my Zepp and oh God, it was so bad, like the watch felt very cheap
Great list! I do own a DW Dapper St. Mawes so I am guilty of falling with the fashion watch brands. An alternative mentioned in this video, which is the Orient Bambino is really nice. I own the 2nd gen version 1 with a white face and gold case and a dark brown strap, which is really beautiful. I also own a Burei as mentioned, but all black and mesh strap. I also own a Movado Museum Classic with black face and silver case, which makes it a really minimal watch in my collection. I was expecting Skagen to be in this list, but they do have minimal looking watches as well.
Don't buy a Chinese made braun, there are ALOT of horror stories about how cheap they are and how often they break down. I bought a use skagen for $50, mainly because I loved it's blue grey sunburst dial and yellow band. It is also 8mm and it's construction great, as good as my seiko's dress watches.
Great lessons to be learned here, and I wish young people would watch this video. As a Swede I'm of course sorry for the behalf of my country that the DW watches are recognized as a Swedish brand. On the positive side though, there's so much affordable alternatives to all these non-affordable (and often crappy) fashion watches, and you bring up some really great ones. I wasn't aware of that Braun model, that looked quite interesting. Braun is for me a brand that makes (like many Japanese brands) various house hold gadgets, but wasn't aware of them making watches as well. Braun is actually also mentioned several times in one of William Gibsons classic sci-fi nóvels (Mona Lisa Overdrive, maybe? Could be wrong) as some tool/gadget that the protagonist use.
I saw Daniel Wellington watches for the first time yesterday, in a fancy, independent jewelry store. Glad I knew what I was looking at, thanks to you Ben
l missed one major flaw of the Orient Bambino(though still in my opinion major). It has a 21mm strap, which is overall more expensive to buy, since it's more rare. But also if you're into getting more watches, you're basically stuck with straps that you can only use on your Orient Bambino.
Sea-gull make a lovely Bauhaus style watch and offer the slightly lower priced Rodina with the same great automatic mechanical (non quartz) movement. The latest Timex Marlin also features a great sea gull movement and a beautiful domed acrylic chrystal.
You can never go wrong with a casio, they're a fantastic watch maker, better than anything Daniel Wellington or Mvmt will ever make and at a similar if not cheaper price.
@@mazenhafez4986 Thanks. I did, but it kept bad time! On the good side, it was much quieter. I'm thinking of turning it into a beater watch, but I can't quite justify buying a new battery ... when I can just take off a good watch!
I love watches and of course love this channel I own several watches an orient crystal from the 80s an seiko 5 from the 60s an Hmt rajat from the 60s... I m saving for the new orient small seconds I really like this watch but I m more I the old watches from 1930s or 1920s these are very unique... Keep the good work
@@satvik1162 yes I agree I discovered them also very alearly the movent is very similar (if not the same of a seiko 5 from that Era) and easy for service or projects.. when someone really discoveries the magic of mechanical and automatic watches there is no turning back...
@@Picker94 agreed , for me , it was because I am of Indian heritage and also a student , and these hmt's were dirt cheap , 5 years back they were even cheaper ! ,You'd get a decent one for 20 usd , but they closed down , and their supply stopped , so now they have jacked up the prices , making it harder for me to buy them . Also they had a contract with citizen in earlier times , that's why the movement is similar to seikos , because it was actually citizens movement that they were making in india .
Bought matching timex watches for my fiance and I - hers is smaller obviously but the same color. I wear it everyday everywhere and six months on couldn't be happier with it. Can't speak to the others but big recommendations right here for something that cost about $50 US
Thanks Ben for introducing Timex, didnt know them. Looked around on Ebay and found a Timex Grand Street, new for only 32 Euro!! I´m in love with my new Timex, let´s see whre this journey ends :-)
I got this automatic Tissot Time teller, I think is what it's called. But it looks like those and it was only $150. I love it so far. More than my more expensive watches actually. Tissot is official. I think this one pretty much guaranteed that I'm getting a PRX next. Highly suggest anything Tissot you can get your hands on.
Alternatively, go no AliExpress and buy the self same watch but with a different branding (or none at all) for anything from £3 to £15. It's hard to get the SKMEI 1181 any more, though it's still on Gearbest.
BigW, Kmart or Target for less expensive fashion watches. Most of the Casio range are now assembled in China. Hence Japan Mov't. I still own a 35 year (purchased new) Casio quartz analog watch, (made in Japan) that is in good working condition, minus a few scratches here and there. And yes. I still wear on a regular basis. My choice anyway for pure style will be...Junkers, followed by Casio and Timex. Forget the others. Great vid!
You might also want to consider Seagull watches. These are unabashedly Chinese (China Made at the bottom of the dial) and of quite decent quality. I have one 9mm thick automatic from this company that has stayed within +/- 3 seconds per day for two years now. Watches don't get much more "minimal" with a white dial with the brand name and only a seconds track around the periphery with numerals at each 5 second mark. Their movements are used by many Chinese manufacturers, and I have heard that they are the world's largest manufacturer of mechanical watch movements.
Fashion watches are either the entry point that pulls a future enthusiasts i to the community or the buyer is just wants something shiny to match some outfits. It just need to look good and tell time decent enough.
I am so glad I watched your video. Jeez.. I was looking for a classic, rustic, vintage looking watch with golden case, domed crystal, beige/champagne dial and leather strap. My first choice would've been Orient Bambino, but form the terrible pictures they post on their site, I couldn't tell how domed their crystals were, and their dials were too white for my liking. Casio, Citizen, Seiko, Bulova and Tissot had NOTHING like what I was looking for. Then just as I was about to leave your video, you showed the Junkers and I was like.. WOWWW.
PS. Check out the Seagull 1963, very popular amongst us watch collectors & usually vsmn pick it up for under $200 USD. our company photographers wear these & put them through hell nit they keep going & going not matter what they are subjected to. Right now I have been testing & trialling a field style tool watch for a RRP of $99 with three straps all quality designed by some law enforce, ent guys from the US, with low level lume, its called a Smith & Bradley comes in 8 styles.
@@davenolan5709 last week I got two for $199 US from AliExpress from a mate that has another watch Chanel that does reviews, he had the link in his description with another 9 other Chinese specials. That were all great value for money. This is the link ua-cam.com/video/Ok9rz8i6DkE/v-deo.html
Thanks for the info. The quality of the 1963 Seagull mechanical movement is beautiful. I personally would like to have a sapphire crystal on the 42mm. I know they make the sapphire for the smaller ones in 36 or 38mm?
@@davenolan5709 I also prefer the 42mm, but these were 38mm, but you candy the Sapphire Kit for most watches for $5-10 with the AR coating to fit yourself these days or get your local jeweller to do it or I have a few guys that run multiple businesses like key cutting, engraving etc that do these jobs for me for like $10 including strap adjustment or band changes as I am terrible with a spring bar tool even though I have plenty of them.
What do think about a video about tips for the first watch to buy? I am 17 years old and want to buy my first watch and don't know where to start. Can you give a generall overview of styles with watches or something similar? Really love your videos. Keep going
My top 10 (cheap) alternatives to DW: 1. City clock tower 2. Asking strangers what time it is 3. Stick putted in ground, on a sunny day 4. Two jars with sand, acting like an hourglass 5. Actual hourglass 6. Counting seconds in your mind 7. Guessing time, based on your hunger 8. Observing when McD's stopped serving breakfasts 9. Pure guess 10. Observing Sun position in the sky
I feel as though the Swatch range offers better alternatives than the Rebel line. The Skin Irony line retail around 100-150€ aswell, and is in design quite minimalist aswell, offering a swiss quarz movement and even a sapphire glass (or something similiar).
£100 i.e the price of a DW or Vincero isn't exactly all that "affordable" , considering the wide range of awesome watches below that. £50 might still be termed so.
@@user-xg6zz8qs3q yes, £100 is affordable in the watch world, considering all the high end brands. But for an average person buying a watch the same way he/she buys clothes, spending £100 on a watch may be a bit much.
Hey, man, your videos save me from wasting my money away in one of those not value brands (MVMT specifically), so I thank you for speaking truth to those who don't know such like me, and I'm even more thankful that you recomend wacthes and brands that worth the value. I just want to ask some things: 1. you know (and in case u did) Komono brand and what is your opinion/review on them? 2. I see in the video for a moment a watc call named Sternglas but u don't talk about it, so i don't know if is that is good or not, or what is your review on them? 3. Between Orient Bambino and Timex, wich is better, and in case is the expensive one, the cheaper one is still the worth in one of those brands? Thanks again for calling out the truth. Edit: forget about the 2nd one, your video talking about them appear just after I write this, 👍🏿
I would throw a blue aligator hirsch strap on that to make it look way more expensive, i wasnt going to go for anothet watch this year but my god at that price I may have no choice! usually one watch a year for me but may be 2 this year! P.S got a Seiko pressage snowflake this year they are sweet!
Love the look of the Braun watches...but have you ever noticed that the second hand doesn't meet the second markers about 90% of the time? It'd kill my OCD
Have you seen the Tapferkeit watches? I really like their design, but at £90 am a little worried I should bump up the price range to a Sternglass or Junkers. On a Web page, I prefer the look of the Tapferkeit, and it says it has Sapphire glass, but then if it arrives and the straps are poor or doesn't live up to its studio shots of go for the Junkers!
The Casio stole its design from the Nomos Tangente. Call it an homage that is the same watch in cheap. It may look nice but I´m generally against stealing others' designs.

I also own a Movado Museum Classic with black face and silver case, which makes it a really minimal watch in my collection. I was expecting Skagen to be in this list, but they do have minimal looking watches as well.
If you can find a Skagen that hasn't fallen apart a few weeks after purchase, good luck with that!
I mean, my Aaren is still in great condition after a year of owning it and wearing it here and there. Martin Buck
I own Timex weekender and simply love it
That's a great watch for the price!
Skagen? They are budget friendly and love their designs, I think in the middle of Braun and DW.
Skagen watches are typically considered fashion watches along the lines of DW and MVMT as well.
Nope, cheap Chinese overpriced watches with $1 Epson movements.
@@funkmon Yeah, but being a Fossil brand, they aren't pretending to be any more than that. You get exactly what you expect.
Very true Rene
That indigo technology is beautiful. This channel is a great place 👍
Man those Braun watches are surprisingly beautiful.
That Casio sapphire with the black dial is currently £39 on Amazon. Excellent value.
I might buy another for myself haha
Damn! I paid forty eight pounds!
Sea-gull make a lovely Bauhaus style watch and offer the slightly lower priced Rodina with the same great automatic mechanical (non quartz) movement.
The latest Timex Marlin also features a great sea gull movement and a beautiful domed acrylic chrystal.
Good work, Ben. Friends don't let friends buy DW!
You can never go wrong with a casio, they're a fantastic watch maker, better than anything Daniel Wellington or Mvmt will ever make and at a similar if not cheaper price.
Solid video and some great alternatives to the dreaded DW.
Thanks Tom!
For me, any watch from a watchmaking brand is a better alternative to DW. I would take a £15 Timex over a DW any day.
I got a Swatch years ago ... and the plastic body means they tick so loudly that I had to leave it in a different room to get a good night's sleep!
Get a metal swatch
I have one and it’s great
@@mazenhafez4986 Thanks.
Keep the good work
Hmt's are cool , wish I had discovered them earlier , I would have gotten so many more
@@satvik1162 yes I agree I discovered them also very alearly the movent is very similar (if not the same of a seiko 5 from that Era) and easy for service or projects.. when someone really discoveries the magic of mechanical and automatic watches there is no turning back...
Can't speak to the others but big recommendations right here for something that cost about $50 US
Love your stuff Ben, thank you! I gotta say though, the level of blur in your shopping segments.... ugh.
A Junghans Max Bill (quartz version) is a great affordable alternative as well.
That's a nice watch too, just a lot more money than these others. I'd love to see a comparison of the Junghans and the Junkers, I like both of those
Great video and excellent choices. Did not know the Casio offering: I will need to open my horizons from g-shocks :-)
This Casio is 107 pounds on Amazon right now, January 2020.
Thanks Ben for introducing Timex, didnt know them. Looked around on Ebay and found a Timex Grand Street, new for only 32 Euro!! I´m in love with my new Timex, let´s see whre this journey ends :-)
love the tissot one. Great recomendations. Better then buying DW. Also check out pagani design watches from aliexpress. They are pretty great too!!
"Braun" is a German brand, and it's pronounced "Brown". It means brown.
Lol
Like Eva?
I got this automatic Tissot Time teller, I think is what it's called. But it looks like those and it was only $150. I love it so far. More than my more expensive watches actually. Tissot is official. I think this one pretty much guaranteed that I'm getting a PRX next. Highly suggest anything Tissot you can get your hands on.
Alternatively, go no AliExpress and buy the self same watch but with a different branding (or none at all) for anything from £3 to £15. It's hard to get the SKMEI 1181 any more, though it's still on Gearbest.
That Indiglo is impressive. I bought one to give to someone and I think it is a great feature.
Which ones of these brands dó watches for smaller wrists? Like 28 -32 mm diameters. Because Daniel Wellington does.
I always liked wearing watches but you and your channel LITERALLY ignited somewhat of a obsession with value watches and casios in particular
Great vid!
Can you make an updated vid of this? I was interested in the casio sapphire but i can't find any stock on it. I believe that it has been discontinued.
The Casio is excellent I have a Candino quite similar to that
Drinking game - Do a shot every time he says "the likes of Daniel Wellington" 😂. Love the look of that Casio.
That Braun and casio were stunning.
Sweet lord why did they discontinue that casio? It's the perfect budget nomos
I am Dainiel Wellington and I approve this message.
I have a Timex as a beater, fantastic watch.
Mondaine could be added in your list too, it´s Swiss made and Bauhaus in design and one of the best looking watches that I know
Fashion watches are either the entry point that pulls a future enthusiasts i to the community or the buyer is just wants something shiny to match some outfits. It just need to look good and tell time decent enough.
U just win my heart over and over again💖💖💖
I bought Timex like Daniel willinton model ,it is really attractive and trendy.
Where can you buy the 42mm 1963 Seagull for under $200.00 ?
@@davenolan5709 last week I got two for $199 US from AliExpress from a mate that has another watch Chanel that does reviews, he had the link in his description with another 9 other Chinese specials. That were all great value for money. This is the link ua-cam.com/video/Ok9rz8i6DkE/v-deo.html
@@davenolan5709 check out the links on this VLOG ua-cam.com/video/Ok9rz8i6DkE/v-deo.html
Keep going
Very well researched video, excellent reviews and fantastic content. Regards from Lansing Michigan Ben!
Thanks so much mate!
Thank you for your contribution to the watch community!
My top 10 (cheap) alternatives to DW:
1. City clock tower
2. Asking strangers what time it is
3. Stick putted in ground, on a sunny day
4. Two jars with sand, acting like an hourglass
5. Actual hourglass
6. Counting seconds in your mind
7. Guessing time, based on your hunger
8. Observing when McD's stopped serving breakfasts
9. Pure guess
This is the video I wanted. Thank you very much.
£100 i.e the price of a DW or Vincero isn't exactly all that "affordable" , considering the wide range of awesome watches below that. £50 might still be termed so.
To many people who know nothing about watches £100 is affordable! Hence why DW or Vincero are so popular.
@@user-xg6zz8qs3q yes, £100 is affordable in the watch world, considering all the high end brands.
But for an average person buying a watch the same way he/she buys clothes, spending £100 on a watch may be a bit much.
@@noobmaster-dm7tu it is too much
Hey, man, your videos save me from wasting my money away in one of those not value brands (MVMT specifically), so I thank you for speaking truth to those who don't know such like me, and I'm even more thankful that you recomend wacthes and brands that worth the value.
I just want to ask some things:
1. you know (and in case u did) Komono brand and what is your opinion/review on them?
Edit: forget about the 2nd one, your video talking about them appear just after I write this, 👍🏿
Ofcourse handsdown ill go for a timex or casio with some heritage instead of shitty daniel wellington
Casio Sapphire!
That casio sapphire is a beauty
I see it for 55euro online 👌👌
I would throw a blue aligator hirsch strap on that to make it look way more expensive, i wasnt going to go for anothet watch this year but my god at that price I may have no choice! usually one watch a year for me but may be 2 this year! P.S got a Seiko pressage snowflake this year they are sweet!
Garreth Molloy h
The look and price of Casio sapphire supercedes all the others.
Definitely going to buy that
Good luck finding one these days!
Love the look of the Braun watches...but have you ever noticed that the second hand doesn't meet the second markers about 90% of the time? It'd kill my OCD
Great content bro! Good job!
if you live in asia, just go with SKMEI the build quality is the same
Hahaha
G shock knock offs
Timex and Casio have been around for years and are reliable and reasonably priced 👍
Been searching for that Casio Sapphire, hard to find.
it's discontinued, what a shame. just heard about the casio sapphire.
I would also add Brathwait to the list.
Exactly what I was looking for😃😃
Have you seen the Tapferkeit watches? I really like their design, but at £90 am a little worried I should bump up the price range to a Sternglass or Junkers. On a Web page, I prefer the look of the Tapferkeit, and it says it has Sapphire glass, but then if it arrives and the straps are poor or doesn't live up to its studio shots of go for the Junkers!
The Casio stole its design from the Nomos Tangente. Call it an homage that is the same watch in cheap. It may look nice but I´m generally against stealing others' designs.
Already used DW watch so beautifull nd outclass look...others watches
