LYRICS:
I. The Crimson Sunrise
(Instrumental)
II. Innocence
I remember a time
My frail, virgin mind
watched the crimson sunrise
Imagined what it might find
Life was filled with wonder
I felt the warm wind blow
I must explore the boundaries
Transcend the depth of winter's snow
Innocence caressing me
I never felt so young before
There was so much life in me
Still I longed to search for more
But those days are gone now
Changed like a leaf on a tree
Blown away forever
into the cool autumn breeze
The snow has now fallen
and my sun's not so bright
I struggle to hold on
with the last of my might
In my den of inequity
viciousness and subtlety
struggle to ease the pain
struggle to find the sane
Ignorance surrounding me
I've never been so filled with fear
All my life's been drained from me
The end is drawing near....
III. Carpe Diem
'Carpe diem, seize the day'
I'll always remember
The chill of November
The news of the fall
The sounds in the hall
The clock on the wall ticking away
'Seize the Day'
I heard him say
Life will not always be this way
Look around
Hear the sounds
Cherish your life while you're still around
"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today,
Tomorrow will be dying."
We can learn from the past
But those days are gone
We can hope for the future
But there may not be one
The words stuck in my mind
alive from what I've learned
I have to seize the day
To home I returned
Preparing for her flight
I held with all my might
Fearing my deepest fright
She walked into the night
She turned for one last look
She looked me in the eye
I said, 'I Love You...Good-bye'
"It's the most awful thing you'll
ever hear."
"If you're lying to me..."
"Oh, you dearly love her."
"...just have to leave... all our lives."
"Seize the day!"
"Something happened.
"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may."
"She was killed."
IV. The Darkest of Winters
(Instrumental)
V. Another World
So far or so it seems
All is lost with nothing fulfilled
Off the pages and a T.V. screen
Another world where nothing's true
Tripping through the life fantastic
Lose a step and never get up
Left alone with a cold blank stare
I feel like giving up
I was blinded by a paradise
Utopia high in the sky
A dream that only drowned me
Deep in sorrow, wondering why
Oh come let us adore him
Abuse and then ignore him
No matter what, don't let him be
Let's feed upon his misery
Then string him up for all the world to see
I'm sick of all you hypocrites
holding me at bay
And I don't need your sympathy
to get me through the day
Seasons change and so can I
Hold on boy, No time to cry
Untie these strings, I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away
Oh come let us adore him
Abuse and then ignore him
No matter what, don't let him be
Let's feed upon his misery
Now it's time for them to deal with me
VI. The Inevitable Summer
(Instrumental)
VII. The Crimson Sunset
I'm much wiser now
A lifetime of memories
run through my head
They taught me how
for better or worse, alive or dead
I realize there's no turning back
Life goes on the offbeaten track
I sit down with my son
Set to see the Crimson Sunset
(Gather ye rosebuds while ye may)
Many years have come and gone
I've lived my life, but now must move on
(Gather ye rosebuds while ye may)
He is my only one
Now that my time has come
Now that my life is done
We look into the sun
'Seize the day and don't you cry,
Now it's time to say good-bye
Even though I'll be gone,
I will live on, live on.'
John Petrucci always plays with a look on his face like he's teaching you something. "Did you hear that note? Now, listen to this. Hear the difference?"
hahahahahahah like whiplash movie
lol!! So cool!!!
He's a natural teacher man..
Throught 05:30 I can hear Lars influence
Throught 05:30 I can hear Lars influence
This song is nothing without James' tambourine
LOLLL

You made my day !
I remember when this album released. I used to drive my parents to renaissance fairs and irish festivals in the illinois state region. they used to sing along with this album. those times are long gone now, but I still remember them. Dad passed from kidney failure and strokes, mom has alzheimer, and I got old. But I still have memories of the best of times we shared.
truth is, I only let myself listen to this song a couple of times a year, because now days, it really hurts to listen to, due to the memories it brings back, on those long car rides, and my old metalhead parents singing along with such a legendary song. I love and miss ya pops
Music always connects us with our happiest or saddest moments in our life...... Thanks to this song, your parents are still alive!!!
You got fond memories indeed. I think you should celebrate those times with your pops and mum. I would like my kids to do so after I’m done walking this earth…
LaBrie's vocal is pure gold on this song
Agreed. Amazing performance! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Basically nobody else could sing this, DT wrote the melody lines not really considering what a singer can do. It's absurdly (and sustained) high notes and he still nailed it. As part of 2-3 hours of other equally difficult songs.
This is DT at their absolute peak. This song. This performance. This period in time.
And Someone said the peak was during the Octavarium era, DT just evolves from album to album not horizontally or vertically, one spot in history just ever changing
wrong. it was in this video yes, but only precisely at 9:13.00973 seconds.
No James' voice. He peaked at "Awake".
@@kaydee8902 Octavarium was their last good album. It was all downhill from there.
@@kaydee8902 I think Labrie's peak is Awake and the rest of the band on Scenes From a Memory.
"I wrote A Change of Seasons for my mom when she was tragically killed in a plane crash, about carpe diem, seize the day and appreciating life while you have it. That's probably the most valuable lesson I've ever learned and some of the more poignant lyrics I've ever written." - Mike Portnoy
Is incredible how much we can learn from one song. This is one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. MP is a pure genius.
Diana Soare 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🎶
A Change of Seasons is Dream Theater best song ever made
Este!
Im sorry for your lost sister
wow, TIL that Mike Portnoy wrote the lyrics for this! As long as I've loved this song, can't believe I never knew that
And they say LaBrie can't sing... They surely haven't seen/heard this performance.
Truly one of their best, from part of them all. Not a single mistake.
he's a bit off but still respectable nonetheless... Score was far better than this
KyleJPie10
It's a great performance imo, especially considering this had been after his food-poisoning and before he took hours with a vocal coach.
João Canelas what r u talking about? this is a good band with bad vocals. He is constantly on verge of falling out of tune, being able to raise the voice does not mean good singing. Labrie is screaming unpleasantly and hee-hawing like a donkey, light years far from a good singer. Most singers suck live, Labrie included. Bruce Dickinson is a good singer, Michael Kiske from Helloween was pretty good singer live, Judas Priest, Michael Aekerfeldt is excellent vocal. La Brie is horrible singer.
oceanroadie I don't have an expert pro ear, but I can perfectly ear that his vocals were decent in this live rendition of this song. In the end, it's all subjective, you may like those artists, I may not, it's very subjective. For me, the best rock/metal vocalist to ever exist is Ronnie James Dio, for you it may be another.
I liked how he sang here, seems very emotional, and it feels even more. I have to disagree with you when you say he is horrible. He may not be "out of this world" but he is pretty much decent, in my opinion.
oceanroadie You must not have heard any of the new DVD. His vocals in Illumination Theory are better than on the CD.
John Myung is definitely a vampire. This is 2000 and he still exactly the same guy lol
Just saw them play in Hershey, he still hasn't aged
He was born a fully grown man
some asians age extremely well and others age horribly. there is no in between
The guy is a robot, but the programmer forgot to programe him to speak
Wasn't he only 33 here though? Most people don't look insanely different from what they do in their 20s to their early 30s.
I swear, I don't think there is another vocalist in progressive rock who divides fans as much as James LaBrie. You either love or hate the guy.
so true!!
+pwoods100 I don't get the people who hate him, I think he has an amazing voice honestly
+pwoods100 He brings it upon himself. He has live performances that go down as the best vocal performance in metal history (like this one), and he has other live performances that are just absolutely horrid. And I'm a diehard LaBrie fan. Idk if it's his health, or just the grinding of worldwide tours, or what, but he really never performs between the 2 extremes. Thankfully, the 3 times I've seen them live he's been spot-on. I wouldn't be surprised if the haters have only seen him in performances like When Dream and Day Reunite, Chaos in Motion, or Waken 2015.
+Brian Joseph Yeah, some of that has been because he had some throat problems in the past. He's obviously over it now. And you're right, some of his performances are spot on, and when he's bad he's really bad.
+pwoods100 Lol, ever heard of a band named Rush?
there is 5 musicians in Dream Theater? okay i'm polytheistic
Alexandre lmao same dude
Me too, I have 4 gods ;)
When LaBrie says "goodbye" I get chills every time
Heheh...
Typical rock band, after 20 songs: Sorry we only played for an hour and a half but traffic was a bitch and we have to be in Cleveland by this time tomorrow! G'night!
DT after four songs: Sorry we only played for 2-1/2 hours but traffic was...
It's a jumble of pop songs vs. massively orchestrated compositions, like, I dunoo, longhair serious music. In a hundred years they'll be playing this at orchestra concerts alongside Bach and Mozart. :D
I know, right....
Its so sad knowing what it meant .... 🥺🥺
I was there. One of the best shows ever. Dreggs warmed up. People are still talking about this show.
What's amazing about this particular performance is that it's about 2 1/2 hours into the show. They started a little before 9PM and played until midnight. MP collapsed after the show from exhaustion. These guys just run on pure adrenalin...
"Sorry about the short set" ----
2-3 hours is normal for dream theater, 2 hours is bare minimum.
basically other bands play 60-90 minutes, and then add another 15 minutes. DT plays 90 minutes, takes a break, adds another 60 minutes, takes a break, and another 15 minutes.
this is how they can charge far above average ticket prices and still be sold out all the time in big locations, often with several concerts in a row at the same venue.
A Change of Seasons was the encore here. This was, more or less, 3 hours and 15 minutes into the show.
Envoy you and everyone there that night! This is music gone to that next level.
+kurtilein3 I was very surprised when they had only 1,5h set during the last 30th anniversary tour
TheHiton16
Maybe they are getting old and getting less hungry, or (you can answer this) maybe they had one or two awesome support bands on that occasion, which were taking plenty of time. At some venues in large cities there are time constraints due to noise that have to be followed. I wonder what it is, it could be a number of things.
1:22 Can we talk about how awesome this shot of Myung is? He looks like the master of the universe.
Best song ever written. Hands down.
Bruh.
Yes.
It's a literal masterpiece.
Hannah Aych
Yep.
Definitely.
This is mah jam bruh,
Bruh do you even Octavarium
Octavarium is great, but I still think Change of Seasons is the epitome of their career. :)
That would have to be my list too.
Change of seasons, Metropolis, Learning to Live, Six Degrees. Talk about some great fucking music.
That’s why Octavarium is a close second.
"I'll always remember... the chill of November..." *goosebumps"
Dream Theater : a band with all gods of music as members
James sounds really good here, no cap.
Anything before 2006 he sounds good
@@epnlvr9790I’d say he was good through 2013. He had some good shows in 07, 08-09 were rough, and 2010-2013 were good.
11:06 - 11:16
REAL ! REAL MIKE PORTNOY !
THAT'S THE FEELING OF DT!
AMAZING !
camera cant capture that fast wow
People shit on James and I will NEVER understand why. A man who is able to belt out a 25 minute song like this with all the difficult vocal parts AFTER all the exhausting touring and health problems is golden in my books, and always will be.
About LaBries voice... i really doubt that any real singer, someone who studies voice and understands the use of it... and the cares that we need to have in order to maintain it, would criticise or even hate Labries voice. Yes, sometimes he can't hit the notes or just doesn't sound good, but it's natural. For many reasons:
a) His age.
b) The intensity of DT's songs, concerts and tours
c) Health problems that he had in the past
d) The pressure of beign the most noted person when it comes to a mistake on a band. Yes, the frontman is always the one that gets the spotlight, for better or worst.
Well, i supose only people that don't understand those things i pointed would say that james sucks...
He does not. He is a superb vocalist, a great frontman and, as far as i saw, a great human beign too.
Sorry for the bad english. Still learning, english and to live :D
Very well said m8
I always thought LaBrie was not a proper singer for an awesome band like this but I'm not saying he's completely bad either (I'm not a hater, he sounds perfect in many songs but I never stand his high register). I think that for a guy who sings for a living, he's not professional about it. Other singers at his same age, with decades of touring and everything, sound better. Look at the concert of Score and then watch Chaos In Motion, it's been just a year but he sounds completely different, I was really dissapointed when I saw that because the band was flawless. Nowadays he sounds better live but still there's a huge gap between his singing and the rest of the band. Pressure??? He has been in DT for over 30 years, I don't think he feels any pressure by now. You're right about the health problems though. I'm not a singer myself, I can understand some things and give the guy a break but to me, he always was and will be the weak member of the band.
Well, when u say labrie is the weak member of DT i agree, still he stood up very well through the years. and i can understand and respect your feelings towards it. The pressure i mean should be translated as stress or such, beign an frontaman aint easy, i had my band for bout 7 or so years and we never played to a huge audience. One time we played to over 1000 people. Was our biggest audience. Was so intense and it was a heavy pressure. I do not think crowds are things u get used to it, you can learn how to manage this, but at the end he is human and i dont know how he feels about that. I think that part is very particular to each one of us... its personal. Well... about the rest, we got our opinions, and i may have been a little over the edge, and im sorry for that. The fact is that i hold so much respect for Labrie and all DT members. Well, anyways, thanks for your commentary. Regards from Brazil.
It has nothing to do with professionalism. In fact I think you'll find few singers more "professional" than LaBrie in terms of the technicalities of singing, and probably in the care of his voice too.
It's just plain his vocal chords can't take it. Sometimes he sounds good, say in Score, sometimes he sounds terrible, like you said in Chaos in Motion. Chaos in Motion was when I went to a concert, and honestly in that day he sounded pretty bad.
But oh well, they decided that's the voice they want, and I'm pretty sure by now they wouldn't just say "you're out". Too many years.
I wouldn't be surprised if LaBrie has talked to them about being replaced over the years with the rest of the band.
And hey, in the Images and Words days he was a force of nature. I'm still amazed by the power he had live back then.
after some months i though again...and yeah, u guys are right, there are more professional singers (in technic and care with the voice) than labrie's.
This is one hell of a long show after which Portnoy physically imploded from exhaustion. Collapsed by all accounts. What a trooper though, major respect.
I dunno how guys go on and on like that. Kansas' last couple of tours (the Leftoverture and PoKR 40th tours) they do an acoustic set, an electric set, and play the featured album in its entirety (and COWS as an encore on the PoKR shows because they almost HAVE to :) ) - about 2-1/2 hours of music, generally without an intermission, night after night, city after city. The PoKR tour is gonna run to just over 2 years before they cap it off. Then it's into the studio to finish off their NEXT album. DANG.
Hats off bigtime to bands like this who play complicated, intelligent music that's way more like Bach concerti or Handel oratorios than three minute top 40 three-chord pablum, and keep NAILING it year after year. Gives yet another whole generation of up and coming musicians and singers something REAL to aim for. Major major kudos!
Didn’t eat enough Taco Bell before the show 😢
LaBrie nails it here IMO. Never got why people have a problem with him. He sounds awesome here. I saw DT live in Melbourne the other night, and all members were absolutely on fire, yes, including JLB
TheAdam159 LaBrie is an awesome vocalist, no doubt, but IMO his voice isnt thaaaaat beautiful...but his technique is flawless, yeah.
TheAdam159 jealous bro, they didn't come to Brisbane, only Melb and Sydney. Good gig?
TheAdam159 he should have been replaced at leeaast five years ago
he was very painful to listen to in 2017.
TheAdam159 I’m an Aussie too and I love DT and James as a vocalist he’s probably my favourite in all of prog
James Labrie is fucking amazing in this live
I just can't believe that Labrie had a fucking 150 minute live and the power he still has in this live OH MY GOD
25 min of eargasm
50, you can't play it once
@@AndyVasile hahahahahah that's trueeeee
thumbs up for skinny petrucci
He's not even skinny here. He just hasn't reached his final form yet ;)
I really don’t understand why you guys insist on comparing Petrucci with God. I know he’s good but come on, he’s nothing compared to Petrucci
Now he's bulked up bodybuilder petrucci to get even more agressive tone.
canavar I know right, now he's super buff
@@idoaviv5130 no agressive tone? Fall into the light?
One of (if not the best) performances by any Metal band ever. EVERYONE was on point here. John and John are killing it on guitars, Mike is amazing as always, Jordan is shredding, and James... HOLY CRAP. In my opinion, this is one of the best performances by any Metal vocalist. Wish I could've seen them back in these days man..
Best James LaBrie performance ever
Check "To live forever Live in tokyo" ^^ but yeah, he's definitly good there
Live at la Marquee and budokan too.

+Tomé Silva I'm guessing Myung thought they were finished 'saying goodnight' and turned around to get off the stage. But then, someone off stage said they weren't done, and he then awkwardly walked back into position.
+Tomé Silva It looked like he just walked around a bit, didn't seem weird.
+Fiends4 If Myung walks, it's already weird...lol
Fuck, that got me at least a Minute :DD
Hahahahah
Dream Theater`s Magnum Opus!
"Magnum Opus" :D That was the first comparison that came to mind: Magnum Opus plus Lamplight Symphony, minus the violin and plus crunchier guitars. :D :D :D First time I've heard this piece. Just getting my feet wet into DT. How'd I miss this stuff all this time?!?!? The depth, and intricacy of the composition, the raw appeal of the lyrics, the spot-on performance... awesome.
This is one of the hardest songs to play on drums. I've been a drummer for 6 years, and I thought I'd mastered drums. Then I heard this.. Little did I know I was in for a VERY rude awakening! Lol Mike Portnoy is one of the best. All credit to him and Dream Theater for giving us such amazing music. \m/
Lol try Rosetta stoned or Triad by Tool
And this was written in the 90’s O_o
Not only for drums. Hard song all the way!
@@asmodeus9075 no but danny is like not human
I'm curious if 4 years later you've realized 6 years on the drums was really nothing
JORDAN RUDESS HAS HAIR!
Scott Bainbridge He looks super weird with hair!
youngest fans of DT right here
He didn't cut his hair. All that magic he performs on keyboards transferred his hair from his head to his chin.
Will Bainbridge He is the one punch man of keyboarding world :3

Phenomenal vocal performance by Kevin James LaBrie.
Song for eternity!! Includes: rock, jazz rock, metal, a real masterspiece!!
You know it’s a dream theater performance when there’s ads halfway through 1 song
Their best song by far. And people say Octavarium or even Tuscany beats this, don't make me laugh. The next closest song to this is Learning to Live, but this is their peak and demonstrates all of the bands strengths.
+Omair Sheikh I havent heard anyone claim tuscany is their best (although its gotta be a top ten for me)
I'll agree that this is the most all-encompassing song theyve ever written. it has everything. prog metal at its absolute best. Ill also agree that learning to live is the runner up.
+The Graceful Savage Tuscany is surely one of my favorites. And i have heard the claim its there top multiple times.
+Omair Sheikh The Count of Tuscany is my fav though
Marcelo Henrique You just made me laugh, I specifically said not to do that.
+Omair Sheikh Ever heard of different opinions? As for me Octavarium beats any other song ever written.
Goosebumps and teary eyes from 22:06 to 23:10 EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. In 13 years of listening to this song I think I should've get used to it, but no, every listen is as magical as the first one!
Same....
“Gather ye rosebuds while ye may!”😢🤘
five years later, and this to me is still peak music. I can't believe they managed to write this song.
That part is the weakest from this amazing oda epic. But this is one of my favorites ever. And mp wrote lots of it
@@LuisJacob366okay who cares what you think when you're wrong 😮
Its amazing to realize the vast difference in writing between this and The Astonishing. While both are epics relatively speaking that are heavily narrative driven. The Astonishing drags on for 2 and a half hours just to tell another heroes journey story, and much of the musicianship (which has always been a selling point for DT) gets reduced to being a soundtrack. A Change of Seasons tells a grounded personal story of innocence loss, despair and hope in the form of a coming of age story, and the musical passages are used to symbolize the passage of time and the changing of seasons. All while still delivering on the virtuoso front. This is how DT should tell a story.
They should learn from Rush that, with short but well written songs, you can say a vast amount of things while maintaining musicianship. Songs like The Trees and Freewill are some examples
20 yrs gone by....dam, time really does get away from us
Let's hear any singer out there perform this piece better than LaBrie.
True. These kind of songs are perfect for him. he fucks up when he goes heavy/power metal
+Brian Kunkle lol
+Evil Shred No. He always sings great what he sings.
+Ikmel A.A.A. (Saga Gemini) no one remains in this world.. JLB holds the respect.. !
There are no words to describe how incredible this song is!
David Topchiev, I thought it was! But now I know that "song" is too simple for this!
It's an experience and a journey
NOTHING can touch this song.... nothing.. this is THE best fream theater song ...
Losing your mom at that age in a sudden twist of fate ....I cant even put that into words....but this guy wrote it to music...give him kudos for that at least...👍
Best song they ever wrote, IMO, and James LaBrie; well you either love him or can't stand him. I just happen to love the guy's voice and his showmanship.....
My god what a masterpiece. Petrucci and Portnoy absolutely on fire here and James too if I'm honest. I loved how this was the encore on the I&W 20th anniversary tour. It was just as good as this too. I think ACoS is one of their greatest works - melodic, epic, great lyrics and it doesn't feel overly long, even though it clocks in at 23 minutes.
I love that the crowds clapping is dang near on point, only tiny amounts of drag.
How is it possible someont to dislike a masterpiece like this one.....
This song is bloody fantastic, it gets me every time.
I am in awe every single time I hear this song. Perfection.
i remember in 2012 when this video had 86k views
now it has 1.5 millions.
wow....
having watched this dvd a million times in high school....now looking back over 15 years later, it just occurred to me that this is about the best set list you could EVER hope for in a dream theater show....honestly, the only thing it's missing is the first metropolis
Yeah but lucky people who attended the show got to see Part 1 though!
@@mrbavengerpart one is also on Spotify. Probably my favorite performance of it along with Luna park and score
Still to this day my favorite track of theirs. It's a damn challenge to create and execute a 20+ minute song, and god damn do they do it right with this.
I remember this song I first heard in 1995, still just as amazing ever since, any time I listen to it. Timeless masterpiece.
This was and still is my favorite drum kit EVER.
I cannot believe what consummate musicians these guys have always been. Such complicated sounding arrangements and so perfect every time.
Amazing performance of LaBrie!!!
To be honest, I usually don't like Labrie's voice in live shows, but he really nailed it here!
Because this is before he got vocal surgery :P anything before or around the time of Scenes from a Memory, he's great but everything after is iffy.
*****
Actually, he ruptured his vocal chords on the Awake tour. Anything starting with the Awake Japanese leg is iffy. He claims to have not felt normal until at least '02, and he's really good since around the Black Clouds tour.
CODMarioWarfare Yeah I saw them live last month and he sounded spot on.
Drakodan I actually did not know about the food poisoning incident until recently, I thought he ruptured his vocal chords while performing. I'll have to check out some Awake performances
Drakodan Jesus crap that just blew me away. I just skipped right to 25:00. I'm pretty new to DT and haven't heard much before Scenes from a Memory so I've never heard LaBrie so good.
This is a rollercoaster of emotions. From happiness to sadness to anger to apathy to desperation. This embodies the human experience in one song. It's brilliance is unrivaled.
These guys shaped my life untill now, and my future that is for sure, and i'm thankful for every lyric every word and every melody they wrote. Long live the legends!!

Even the best songs bore you if you listen to them all the time. Not this one, there is something magical about this song...

Tremendously great song.... THE MASTERPIECE OF THEIR MASTERPIECES.
Truly one of the best songs ever created.
You can tell JP was properly trained in playing his instrument by the way he holds his guitar: 1) Right position, not down low at the knees, bent right elbow, 2) the way he wraps his left hand generously around the neck, position of wrist, 3) the way he spreads his fingers of left hand, 4) Often rests the guitar on his elevated knee, to even more perfect his playing, more control. 5)Position of right wrist for picking. Absolutely beautiful to watch him play. And of course, the incredible sound he produces from that guitar and virtuoso playing!
Stands up musically to any concept album. and i am a fan of many.
one of LaBrie's best live performances....
Things that cannot be unheard:
"The snow has now fallen, and my son's not so bright"
"Sorry about the short set."
For real though, this was so good, I wanted more!

Perfect song for the autumn to winter transition period. Brings out so many feels

To this day I still think that this was his best drum setup. Purple Monster had it all, and Mike could play it all... without moving his ass.

Which cover did your CD have? Was it the one with the burning apple or the one with the Majesty icon?
FekLeyrTarg's Videos You misunderstood, we are maybe talking about two different cds! I was talking about the ep A Change of Seasons! The live Metropolis 2000 is safely at home!
Yes, I did misunderstand you. I thought you were talking about "Live Scenes From New York". My bad. :)
FekLeyrTarg's Videos No harm done ;) :D
I can't stress this enough, I swear to god this is the best song EVER written
My favorite song of all time
This is just such an awesome overall song! It's got everything!
Even some Danny Elfman
I just jad to listen to this today. After all these years...😢
Singers don't get to swap guitars, amps, change strings, change batteries, replace tubes or rebias their amps when their tone is off or their instrument is flat or sharp and out of tune. It's understandable then, if one knows a minimum, that singing like this, at this level is nearly impossible to maintain. It would be akin to asking a starting MLB pitcher to pitch a shut out every other night for 15 months, or to expect the heavyweight champion to go 13 rounds 4 times a week for a year and go undefeated, to expect Labrie to sound like the records night in and night out live.
I remember a time
My frail, virgin mind
Watched the crimson sunrise
Imagined what it might find
Life was filled with wonder
I felt the warm wind blow
I must explore the boundaries
Transcend the depth of winter's snow
Innocence caressing me
I never felt so young before
There was so much life in me
Still I longed to search for more
But those days are gone now
Changed like a leaf on a tree
Blown away forever
Into the cool autumn breeze
The snow has now fallen
And my sun's not so bright
I struggle to hold on
With the last of my might
In my den of inequity
Viciousness and subtlety
Struggle to ease the pain
Struggle to find the same
Ignorance surrounding me
I've never been so filled with fear
All my life's been drained from me
The end is drawing near...
[III. Carpe Diem]
"Carpe diem
Seize the day"
I'll always remember
The chill of November
The news of the fall
The sounds in the hall
The clock on the wall
Ticking away
"Seize the Day"
I heard him say
Life will not always be this way
Look around
Hear the sounds
Cherish your life
While you're still around
("Gather ye rosebuds while ye may)
(Old Time is still a-flying;)
(And this same flower that smiles today)
(Tomorrow will be dying")
We can learn
From the past
But those days
Are gone
We can hope
For the future
But there might not be one
The words stuck in my mind
Alive from what I've learned
I have to seize the day
To home I returned
Preparing for her flight
I held with all my might
Fearing my deepest fright
She walked into the night
She turned for one last look
She looked me in the eye
I said, "I Love You...
Good-bye"
("It's the most awful thing you'll ever hear")
("If you're lying to me...")
("Oh, you dearly love her")
("...just have to leave...)
(All our lives")
("Seize the day!")
("Something happened")
("Gather ye rosebuds while ye may")
("She was killed")
[IV. The Darkest Of Winters]
[Instrumental]
[V. Another World]
So far or so it seems
All is lost
With nothing fulfilled
Off the pages and the
T.V. screen
Another world
Where nothing's true
Tripping through
The life fantastic
Lose a step
And never get up
Left alone
With a cold blank stare
I feel like giving up
I was blinded by a paradise
Utopia high in the sky
A dream that only drowned me
Deep in sorrow, wondering why
Oh come let us adore him
Abuse and then ignore him
No matter what
Don't let him be
Let's feed upon his misery
Then string him up for all the world to see
I'm sick of all
Your hypocrites
Holding me at bay
And I don't need
Your sympathy
To get me through the day
Seasons change and so can I
Hold on Boy
No time to cry
Untie these strings
I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away
Oh come let us adore him
Abuse and then ignore him
No matter what
Don't let him be
Let's feed upon
His misery
Now it's time for them
To deal with me
[VI. The Inevitable Summer]
[Instrumental]
[VII. The Crimson Sunset]
I'm much wiser now
A lifetime of memories
Run through my head
They taught me how
For better or worse
Alive or dead
I realize
There's no turning back
Life goes on
The offbeaten track
I sit down with my son
Set to see the Crimson Sunset
(Gather ye rosebuds while ye may)
Many years have come and gone
I've lived my life, but now must move on
(Gather ye rosebuds while ye may)
He's my only one
Now that my time has come
Now that my life is done
We look into the sun
"Seize the day
And don't you cry
Now it's time
To say good-bye
Even though
I'll be gone
I will live on
Live on"
In every beginner music book should say: WARNING: DO NOT ATEMPT TO PRACTICE WITH DREAM THEATER SONGS OR YOU COULD GET DESMOTIVATED AND NEVER WANT TO PLAY YOUR INSTRUMENT AGAIN
Panic attack was the very first song I learned on bass. I was the complete opposite way
@@joeyuzwa891 that's impressive
Stream of consciousness is the first song I tried to play on the drums. The video of Mike Portnoy playing in studio was the only thing that allowed me to do so. Without having the visual of how a sequence of sounds were made, I had trouble finding the "groove" of that sequence. I think figuring out how to play a difficult song as the first song I learned helped me tremendously.
It’s completely the opposite! I’m currently at 1,5 years at playing the guitar and I’m super confident at learning Dream Theater songs. I can play Metropolis Part 1, Panic Attack and The Best Of Times super confidently. Some really big guitarists from my country (Hungary) are congratulated me for these achievments, and told me that I’m very talented for my age. I’m really not trying to brag or anything like that, I just wanted to say that with enough practice, Dream Theater songs are perfect to bring your playing to the next level.
Beyond This Life is one of the first songs i ever learned on bass. every song become easier after you mastered that
100% Pure music. I LOVE DT!
8 year straight watching this video, It doesn't matter how long it is, I just can't get enough. What a masterpiece, what a musicians, I just love this band

19:22 "and this, kids is how we have foundations for modern day Djent" Seriously though, this part is so damn good and groovy!
Almost 21 years ago... Absolutely amazing song and performance.
The part from 13:45 is my all time favourite moment from James
This awesome
It was the best time for LaBrie's voice in live performance... lots of nostalgia for that 🥲
tbh, this song is imho one of LaBrie's best performances to date.
And that despites his damaged vocal chords. And I haven't heard any sign of correction or overdub on LaBrie's vocals. It's very impressive that he still was able to have solid performances despites damaged vocal chords.
12:30 How I love this section!!
10:36 Mike Portnoy pelvic thrust :)
Mike portnoy uses Pelvic thrust
*It's super effective!*
It helps him count.

17:22 until 19:22 are my favorite 2 minutes of music, ever. I know that’s saying a lot, but that guitar solo is so perfect, in so many ways.
This is the only group I know that can play this good for this long and keep the song incredibly interesting the whole way through. :] I LOVE THE IMPROVISATIONS!!
you've not listened to YES then......Benchmark for all bands
