Much has been said and written about Xabi‘s tactics, his substitutions ecc. But the true watershed moment in this season‘s story was when he declared to stay at Leverkusen for at least another year. Of course I can‘t prove it, but I‘m sure his departure would have broken the team‘s spirit. With him staying, it became clear that Leverkusen are really untouchable.
This is how it must have felt in the past to witness the birth of great teams like Ajax or Mönchengladbach back in the 60s/70s. I thought football couldn‘t produce this kind of magic any more because usually every underdog contender gets imediatly shot down by Big Money clubs.
