OMG the memories. I wouldn't attempt timestamps for this kind of format even if I wanted to. This is all 10/10 solid gold for '91ers, I hope you can make this happen with other elder statesmen of the FGC.

28:54, Yess, those random players that expose your weaknesses are the most important people to fight against to get better--I totally agree. That's why it's so important to fight against everyone and not cherry pick ^_^.

You have to do this again for the alpha games and sf3/cvs era.

Great stuff. I only wish we had that type of dedicated arcade scene in my region. I remember playing Alpha 2&3 and KI on consoles in the 90s with a small group of friends but arcades were really only at amusement parks and maybe a handful of pizza joints.

This is Charles. I created and ran the World's Finest Street Fighter tournaments, and organized the OG So Cal Street Fighter FGC.
With all due respect to Japan's current fighting game community, which is incredible... In the early 90's through about 1995 and maybe 1996, So Cal was deeper than Japan is today. From players 6-25, So Cal had more top level tournament competitors than Japan does today.
So Cal players 2-6 were roughly the equal of todays top Japanese players. Tomo was Tomo... ☝
Around Super Turbo the love for the game began to die down. It just didn't keep our interest like Hyper Fighting and every game before Super Turbo.

Charles, I definitely take to heart what you said, 100%. The talk of the magazines, like GamePro, was that the Californian players were such a superior team from all over the nation.

@@SlickRick4EVER Hi Rick, thanks for the comment. So-Cal was absolutely United States Top Tier from 91-95. We dominated every state or regional Tournament our local players competed in.
Having said that I would like to qualify my original Japan comment. Out of the immense respect I have for the Japanese community and all they have accomplished through the years, I'd like to say that oG So-Cal was at least equal to top 25 of Japan today. The talent and skill level in So-Cal was incredible as we all worked remarkably hard at the game which we took great pride in as a community.
Gerald Abraham (who was generally ranked anywhere from 6-12 on the board) can tell a story of a Japanese regional he competed in, and without the use of his Main during this general time-frame. He and took 4th. Remarkable! ***CLAPS***

I dont think people understand how dangerous it was traveling to other neighborhoods just to play street fighter.....you might end up on gang territory. All too familiar for me living in NY. I'm sure Yipes has plenty of stories being from the Heights .

@@Chaoskae Trust me I used to go to Mott st. The shit you saw was like a horror movie. I choose Yipes in particular because of the gang activity happening in the Washington Heights. Uptown Harlem was not safe and dont let anyone tell you otherwise lol. Brooklyn wasn't safe either. I've heard stories of people getting shot over SF.

Love this history thanks for the content, but damn James let Akira talk, there were many times you talked over Akira and would completely changed the conversation from what he was saying, and always talking about yourself it got pretty annoying. Love you James of course but it really made some parts unwatchable and I couldn’t watch straight through.

Apologies about that. It’s an ADHD thing. It’s less about being rude but a fear of forgetting something you want to say and wanting to show how you relate to topics. I have it better under control these days due to the awareness of the ADHD. But back then, I hadn’t quite come to the realization I had ADHD.
