man James is an absolute legend. I didn't know that he wrote FAQ for these games back in the late 90s. I'm so graceful that he gave me advice for an strider combo on twitter a few years ago.
Big props to the Xmen 97' people. I firmly believe without that show we wouldn't be getting this. Afterall disney/marvel only looks at these games as marketing tools for their media/merchandise
Not sure. The licensing negotiations would have likely taken alot of time, they likely would have been going long before X-men 97 was even in production. Also the changes to ROMS, the artwork, and the final presentation would have taken quite some time to get approval.
@Ice-Climber true but also the show has been in production for likely a long time aswell. Very possible they were planning ahead
I believe it was already in the works when Arcade 1up got Marvel vs Capcom 2.
I think it's more likely that once Disney bought Fox they were willing to promote the X-Men characters again (in order to build hype for eventually including them in the films).
And so things like X-Men 97 and this MvC collection got the greenlight because of that.

Once Avengers started getting stale and they were able to buy back X-Men, I feel like they immediately started looking at all the media they have had out there from the last couple decades. They went strong with the Krakoa era in the comics, they didn't waste time to put in FOX-men on Disney+, X-men 97 and now this. With Deadpool & Wolverine coming out, they're definitely going all in on X-Men again.
Wow, I still remember printing out pages of how to do infinites for XmenvsSF created by James Chen in 1999.
As someone who just started getting semi-serious about fighting games last year after observing the fgc from afar, I’m so excited to finally be getting into classic Marvel!

Excited for you but be warned: Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is one of the most unforgiving Fighting Games in existence at the highest levels. Hahaha. Hopefully Ranked will have enough players so it won’t be a problem. But this is a game that WILL beat you down if you aren’t ready for it. Hahaha!
I seriously can't wait. I'm gonna be buying this collection DAY 1 on Steam when it comes out.
Between this and Megaman X Dive Offline, Capcom have been making some incredibly cool decisions lately.

I'm not a Marvel Versus fans but I will buy this collection to support the chances for Capcom to greenlight MvC 4. Although, i'm worried with the lack of crossplay that this game will die pretty quick, just like what happened with *Capcom Fighting Collection* . I bought that collection on day 1 for PS4 but after a month or two, no one plays it anymore :/

I grew up with these games thank you Capcom. It just brings me back memories I forgot into the Capcom fighting games when I was 13 years old my mom took me to the local laundromat and I saw his arcade cabinet called Marvel versus Capcom and I was hooked that's how my love of fighting games happen.
All the excitement around this collection has been so energizing -- super happy to hear you gush about your history with all these games, as always!

Thank you for these stories James! Growing up in the arcades, it is super awesome to see a compilation of my childhood finally released on current consoles. I never knew Capcom counted "The Punisher" as it's seventh vs game in MvC2, it always said that there were 7 but I would count the prior vs games vociferously!
Also please tell IFCYipes to release his excitement video for MvC2 to current consoles. lol!

It was so sad, I was chatting with my "Nintendo" friends during the direct, and not the FGC ones and I was the only one freaking out by this 😂
Came to see what quick comment Chen might've had about the MvC2 reveal on the Direct. Noticed that the video is one and three quarter hours long. Got very excited and hit play.

This brought me back to building Diablo 2 characters in class in high school lmao. A friend said I was naming skills in my sleep. Fighting games are a more recent obsession but I can relate so completely to your story. As usual. Love the show.

It’s one of my favorite games, but as a kid/casual player, I didn’t know about the FGC. Seeing how much more it meant to this community makes me more excited for them than myself.
Man had that English major mindset when he was riding those FAQs. After all that I bet you never wrote an essay a word over the required word count because you were so adept at sizing your page that you could make an essay look concise.
Oh wow, not only do you know that CES was sort of the E3 before E3, you actually went to that first E3.
I remember fondly seeing all the crazy new games being shown at CES, in magazines as a kid.
X-Men Children of the Atom was part of my childhood. I loved to play that game so much. Oddly enough. I didn't play any of the other games until MvC2.
Also, when will we get the see the full 90s documentary on the FGC? It’s a piece of history, I remember a scene where the EVO event organizer was being trash talked to, you mashing furiously on a stick, and young Sanchez?
49:33 I remember making the same argument about Marvel's influence in the FGC back when it was up for vote for EVO and we had to make articles on Shoryuken asking people to vote for specific games (I picked Marvel 3).
If I may ask James...Is there an archive of the videos/streams/shows that you did from when the SF 30th Anniversary Collection came out, and you broke down the differences between the different SF2 versions of each character? That was awesome!
On my PC, yeah. I always wanted to edit them into more cohesive episodes but have always been too lazy. 😢

Maybe. I don’t know the later ones as well as I did the early ones. But it’d be fun to do some tutorials for the older games based on my FAQs.
James do you know if there will be Modern controls in Marvel vs Capcom . ?
They said they are adding alternate controls for one-buttons specials as a brand new feature. Not sure the details of how it works, but it’s advertised as part of that package.

For some reason, I found that Children Of The Atom was the hardest game. Even if I put the difficulty setting on one star, I’d get demolished. Loved Marvel Superheroes though. That was my fav. MvC2- just couldn’t get into it. The BGM just didn’t suit the game for me. All jazzy/ Las Vegas type music. Had to turn the BGM off.

No crossplay hurts bad man. Without it this game is going to die in months.I'm happy the game is being released but it boggles my mind that crossplay is missing. Its implementation would have surely payed for itself, why would they neglect such a thing.
TBF, rollback netcode & no crossplay is better than delay-based netcode and no crossplay.

Yeah i have the same worries. I bought Capcom Fighting Collection on day 1 but now it's a ghost town with no one playing it anymore. Crossplay is a must for this collection or people will just stick with games that has crossplay.
To be fair, the netcode for that one wasn’t as good as Fightcade. That’s one of the main reasons it didn’t catch on. If what people said in the chat is true and that the Naomi games don’t work great on Fightcade and this DOES work good, we may get a bigger player base.

Dude blame Microsoft. They probably have some dumb legal thing going on that involves Game pass. I bought MvsC2 for the 360 and when I got a XB1 it never ported over digitally because they said the XB1 doesn't have the license for my MvsC2. The same happened with other digital downloads. So Microsoft screws itself and us customers over with their nonsense so that's probably why you won't see it on there for awhile.
