To know the name by heart of a particular umpire in a world where i dont know any of them is a problem. I cant believe he still has this job.
As a small counterpoint, in rugby (union) everyone knows the names of the best refs. This is partly because they are micced up for transparency, so people know that they do a great job and have good personalities for the jobs.
i know the names of a bunch of pro wrestling refs, but they are just characters in a show and their actions and involvements are all scripted. i also know a bunch of the late 90's through 2010's fight refs, like in UFC or big boxing events. for boxing/ fight refs, i actually know most of them for /good/ calls they made that might have seemed bad right in the moment.
so in the guardians-mariners play, if Laureano swings, the ball hits him in the hand, and then the ball goes into play, is the correct call a dead ball and strike, or a live ball?

As someone who has been in 3 unions, (molders and melters, carpenters, food workers) and I support unions for the most part... but... I always come back to the problems with unions by using Angel Hernandez as a good example. Because most union workers will tell you there's definitely nepotism and favoritism in the union. And that's why guys like Angel Hernandez still have jobs, it's not what you know, it's who you know. If unions could crack down on this then I'd be full Gung ho on unions but I've been jaded by guys like Angel Hernandez the whole time I was there. Guys who weren't as productive but still getting better spots. So everytime you think unions are 100% good with no downside.... think about Angel Hernandez.
5:42 Not sure of the exact writing of the rule. In my eyes the Bat hasn’t entered the zone before he is hit. At that point it doesn’t matter that he followed through, the foul had already happened. (I’m ultimately a soccer nerd and that’s how the FA would judge this)
Correct, but in order for this particular rule to apply, it would have to be a swing that crosses the plate rather than a checked swing. Angel is wrong on several fronts here. 1. He called it a foul tip to start with. 2. He reversed that call after they made a fuss about a struck batter. 3. He reversed his original call solely to avoid review, because he’s utter poison behind the plate.
You think the other umps hate dealing with Angel too? Like the other ump has to argue with the coach because Angel thought it was a swing, even though no one else in the universe agrees. @@teejay3272I’m confused what your point is. Whether or not it hit torks hand (which I personally believe it did) pales in comparison to how obvious it is that (A.) it did not hit the bat whatsoever and (B.) that Tork did not swing in the fuckin SLIGHTEST
What's supposed to happen in a situation where the batter starts to swing, but doesn't check his swing until after it hits him? I could see that being the verdict in this play.
strike
WAIT….Are you not going to mention that dude behind home plate at 4:15?!?
Never clicked on a Jomboy video so fast.
I was watching highlights of bad Hernandez calls last night and then boom.. another one today brought to us by the great JomBoy. Gotta love it! Thank you sir
Angel Hernandez never disappoints when it comes to disappointment.
Angel Hernandez retired on my birthday, what a gift.
Angel actually called foul tip on the play. You can see him motion foul tip with his hands. He literally changed his mind once he realized he was wrong and just straight up lied.
I kind of think MLB's best option is to make a Cuban the commissioner just for a day to fire Hernandez so he can't sue for racism.
That’s absolutely brilliant!
I honestly think Mark Cuban would be a better Commisioner than Rob Manfred.
never in my life do i recall remembering any ref, official, or umpires name for sports that i actually pay attention to let alone baseball which is rare that i catch a game.
Was at the M's game. Thanks for explaining why that call was overturned.
Me too, that was some of the loudest booing I’d heard at a game lol. Literally everyone was yelling “HE SWUNG”
I think also for the second one. The ball is "dead" when it hits a player so the "swing" stops as soon as it hits his hand.
Reminding me of my yearly tradition to go to a game just to yell at angel hernandez
so in the guardians-mariners play, if Laureano swings, the ball hits him in the hand, and then the ball goes into play, is the correct call a dead ball and strike, or a live ball?
This might be the most ridiculous piece of umpiring since I’ve been alive. Dude thought it didn’t hit him. Dude realized they were gonna challenge. Dude lied so the call wouldn’t be overturned. The Union has to go. Go to robo umpires and break up union. Any organization that stands by Angel as an umpire in Major League Baseball has zero credibility and is a plague on modern society 💥 😂.
I don't think the union has to go. They just have to be like bro, you're an idiot and we're not going to defend you anymore. But, he'll sue just like he did when the MLB wouldn't put him in playoff/world series games as racial profiling
No Robo umps. Just league hired umps. No reason they can't pay for better
Angel Hernandez is truly the umpire of all time
Angel Hernandez and baseball don’t mix. He should’ve been a politician.
I was waiting for you to analyze this. I dread the day my Brewers have Angel umping.
0:12 why is angel gesturing foul tip if he thought it was a swing? he's a liar 😂
Yeah he flip flopped his story after an issue arose. Flip flopped the wrong way lol.
4:14 I can’t believe jimmy didn’t make a funny comment about the guy sitting behind home plate
5:42 Not sure of the exact writing of the rule. In my eyes the Bat hasn’t entered the zone before he is hit. At that point it doesn’t matter that he followed through, the foul had already happened.
(I’m ultimately a soccer nerd and that’s how the FA would judge this)
Any movement of the bat could in theory by the vagueness of the rule be called “an attempt to strike at the pitch and missed”
Why does he still have a job?
Union/ protected class
Tenure…….or the umpire version lol
Because the league loves umpires that will dictate outcomes for them.
@@CubeInspectorno he’s protected by the union, he sued the MLB and the courts even ruled he sucked but he can’t get fired because of the union.
@@Mesenteric Then the union deserves to be sacked.
You think the other umps hate dealing with Angel too? Like the other ump has to argue with the coach because Angel thought it was a swing, even though no one else in the universe agrees. Like they're probably just standing there talking about Angel behind his back pretending to be talking about the call.
Just a question: for the Laureano case, isn't the ball dead before he does cross the "point" where it becomes a swing?
"You're more useless than a poopy flavored lollipop!"
-Dodgeball
you nailed it at the end. "All plays should be reviewable"
Especially when Angel Hernandez is making the calls.
And the game would slow to a crawl
EVERY PLAY SHOULD BE REVIEWABLE!!!!!
WTF YOU JUST SAY???
“If you swing and it hits you, it’s a strike” yeah thanks for the refresher Angel. I’m surprised you knew that
This channel has done so much for developing my interest in baseball but calls like this just crush that interest into dust. Any frustration I have now would be x10 if I was fully invested and frankly, I’m good. Saving myself the headache.
At this point can we get Jomboy in the announcers booth!! Petition here 👇
Guy in the back of The Rockies replay/review looking cool as hell.
The Richard Petty lookalike?
it's absolutely mind blowing that certain plays are reviewable and others are not. just, WHY?
The man made the foul tip motion, and then says oh yeah I said it's a swing. WHICH IS IT, ANGEL?!
I genuienly love baseball and JOMBOYS videos. Looking in alot of the backgrounds, a TOOOON of seats are empty D:
I haven’t really watched mlb since the 90’s. Back then I used to think watching Angel Hernandez call a game was like watching a Monty Python skit. I see nothing has changed in 30 years.
"all calls should be reviewable" couldn't agree more. The amount of challenges is limited, let a team use one whenever they want.
He’s behind the plate tonight in Houston. The TV announcers said this after three straight strike calls with the bases loaded:
“Whoa”
“Oh my goodness”
“You have got to be kidding! What in the world?!
Was that the "First pitch right down the middle for a ball" and "What part of that pitch was not a strike?" game?
I got an official ruling on the Laureano call. They said he did swing, but because he swung after he was hit, the HBP counts. So order of operations matters now apparently. And I guess Torkelson swung before he was hit? I dont know, this HBP/swing thing feels like it is turning into the MLB's version of the catch rule disaster.
