My fiancée has a similar post office box and it’s has a bunch of coins in it and I offered to help my fiancée to open it up but I am not good with letter or number combination locks
To open this box: 1) Turn the knob three spins clockwise. After third pass, stop on the first letter. 2) Turn the knob counter-clockwise, passing the second letter once. Stop on the second letter on the second time around. 3) Turn the knob clockwise and stop as soon as you reach the third letter. 4) Turn the lower knob counter-clockwise and the door will pop open.
+Matthew Pommrehn If your PO box looks like this, the five letters you have is not a five letter combination. For example, if your combo is AB DE G, you should stop the knob halfway between the AB, halfway between the DE, and then on the G. I hope that helps.
Right three times to clear everything. Then turn it clockwise and stop on the first number (or letter.) Then turn counterclockwise to the second. Then clockwise to the last, and it should open. Just like any other combo lock.
That doesn't make sense. At least with mine, it's three letters only (or halves, ex: H 1/2 instead of H) For example, it could be F - A - H, or F 1/2 - A 1/2 - H 1/2
So weird I just found one of my grandpas, mine says #145... I wonder if they are like close to each other when produced, was trying to figure out how to open it
pretty cool to stumble upon this video. I just got one from my great grandma, she just passed away and we went to get some stuff from her house and this was one of the things! mine is from 1960 these things are great pieces of history
My post office still has these from the 50's. They are really worn out looking. The doors can be bought for $10 bucks on ebay if you don't care if they lock. I have one from 1958
10 years later, but just stumbled across this and thought it was cool. I'm about to start making a 3D model using vintage post office boxes and this came up in my search. The bank is very cool and I hope you still have it... and I will add that I'm bewildered by the dislikes here.
The dial I have is 1-8. On the bottom labeled combination : RT 1/2 LT 6/7 ANY IDEA HOW TO OPEN IT ? Not sure if that is a 1 or a / between the 6& 7. Thanks
By the way people, if you want one of these, the doors themselves are pretty affordable, about $10+ on eBay. Pre-made boxes are also on there for like $20. Or, you can get the whole shabang for ~$70.
Nice! My college had these at its post office, except they were converted to key operation. The keyhole was where the combination knob would have been. I thought it was weird that they would have used letters for lock combinations.
Yo I have the same thing do you know how to crack the code cause I forgot my code for it

mine has a 5 letter combo how does that work ?

It does thank you very much

still helping people solve the mystery four years later. thanks bud.
I have the combination of letters to use and the directions to turn the dial. Is there an amount of turns needed in each direction?
This looks like the same mailbox that we had growing up. The same mailbox number. Do you want to sell it?
I actually did just sell it to someone who watched this video a couple weeks ago lol
I have P.O. box banks that my grandfather made. One is nearly impossible to open but really pretty!
I have a National 1961

Did you figure out I can’t figure out how to open mine
Do you know how to reset the code on one of them? I know my code but i'd like to reset
Cool! My local one has new metal boxes....they look boring.

How do you put in the combo to one of these? I was told my combo was IJ -FE-J
I have a family friend that has a few for sale. He's located in Aurora Colorado.

It's still on my bookshelf! It's about half full of coins from the last decade lol

This was 4 years ago, this channel didn't even exist!
I have one but it's different from yours. It has a key door instead of a dial. And I have no clue how to open the thing. can you help me?
By the way people, if you want one of these, the doors themselves are pretty affordable, about $10+ on eBay. Pre-made boxes are also on there for like $20. Or, you can get the whole shabang for ~$70.
These are on campus at MTSU, impossible to open
I see those on eBay all the time...yeah you can tell they were originally combo locks.
I would say just bills and what ever was in their. Now if you check out my videos on my phones. Now think of all the history behind them!
i see your missing the back combo cover i have 30 1960 po box doors and parts
I don't think you can change the combo on one of these.

I have one of those banks, I know the combination, I just forget how to turn it right to open it. Can you help?
I have #478 and #482 from 1906 :D
Walnut
Thanks man!
Mine is from 1960
Mines 1959

I made it by myself. I used woodprix woodworking plans for that.
