Custom Cyberdeck For (Legal) Satellite Hacking
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2023
- After doing a number of satellite and radio astronomy experiments, I finally got tired of my old briefcase full of tangled radio gear. I dug through my collection of broken computers, old wires, spare parts, and other junk, and assembled an all-in-one space cyberdeck!
This system combines most of my satellite and software-defined-radio gear into one portable platform. The hardware includes:
- Touchscreen computer
- RTL-SDR radio
- Various filter / amp modules
- Various WiFi modules
- Satellite Meter / digital video player
- PTZ control for my older dish pointers
- LNB power injector
- King-Dome / Vuqube control
- Panel-mount port interfaces
Software includes:
- Q4OS (simple, low-resource Linux)
- GQRX (standard SDR software)
- Gpredict for satellite tracking
- GOEStools, WXtoIMG, etc for weather satellites
The system is fairly modular and expandable, with most major components simply stuck in with velcro tape. If I want to swap modules for a different experiment, I can just pop them out and replace with something else.
Some of the parts I used include:
- Datalux Tracer computer (found for $1.00 at a police auction).
- RTL-SDR Blog v3 (www.amazon.com/RTL-SDR-Blog-R...)
- Wideband LNA (www.amazon.com/RTL-SDR-Blog-W...)
- Talentcell 12v 6Ah battery pack (www.amazon.com/dp/B00ME3ZH7C)
- Snpurdiri 60% keyboard (www.amazon.com/dp/B097T276QL)
- AC600 Wifi adapter (www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z31W68W)
- GTMedia v8 Satellite Meter (www.amazon.com/GT-MEDIA-Satel...)
- Old Dell PCMCIA wifi card
- Old Broadcom Mini-PCI wifi card
- King-Dome remote
(None of these were sponsored products and I bought all of this myself)
I'm planning to do a variety of projects and experiments with this system and my various 2nd-hand satellite antennas in the future. Stay tuned to see what I come up with!
*Please note that my use of the term "hacking" refers to using hardware and software for unintended or experimental purposes, not anything unauthorized! I am not breaking, pirating, or transmitting anything. I'm simply poking around at old satellite hardware to see what can be freely and legally done with it!

This guy is 100% on a watch list
just like all of us
Now so are we.
welcome to the watchlist boss
The beard alone got him on a watch list
Just one? Pfft being on one watchlist is like being in kindergarten. Try being on DOZENS of seperate agency ODND(Observe, Do Not Detain) lists throughout the Western World then get back to me, да? Lol
(Hi 👁👁👁👁👁's! How's it going guys? 😅)
This is probably the most bootleg shit, cobbled together, hacked up cyberdeck I've ever seen and I absolutely love it. I'd love to see more on satellite & radio astronomy for beginners.
After all.... It's what Russia thinks they have such a EDGE on us western NATO blokes with... Same shit lol
Lmaoo who let him cook 💀💀💀💀
Midwestern modesty in play - bootleg at its finest

A Cyberdeck built out of a cop car computer to spy on satellites? Probably the most cyberpunk thing I've heard in a while.
The most cyberpunk'd entropic cyberdeck ever. brilliant. 10/10
He also looks cyberpunk, he belongs to 2077 for sure.
@@ecardozo7043 he reminds me a sorta of Apeman from the Future or something....
This is a quintessential Save It For Parts video. It's got junk, it's got technical problems, it's got eclectic hardware, and it's got custom made parts! Probably one of my favorite videos on a long list of my favorite SIFP videos. Great stuff!
Thanks! Glad you liked it! It's been one of my favorites as well, even if it took forever to get done!
@saveitforparts Ime a 45 year old dude living in the UK 🇬🇧. Remember many movies 🎬 that shown somebody with proper 👌 ( know whst ime doing here) knowledge. Scene in T2. Bit of hacking Mr Connor . Knowbody wants federal prison 🤣🤣🤣 but allways. That a thing. 😮 can Hack like that ( ( Errrr turns out you can 🤫🤫🤫 ) any hardware put down . Looks complex , masterminded. Was fully into that joined groups also into that. Believe in UK 🇬🇧 but a few 🤣🤣🤣🤣 We stated within the law. But i smiled 😃 at your video . Said " Still some blooming Geezer messing & Tinkering about with a blooming old computer 🖥 " . Don't you stop fella. Till they shut it all down. Don't you stop. Whsg a channel. Honour 🎖 to find you on Vast UA-cam. Only a few go deep. Thank god 🙏 wr aunt all parents & civil servsnts 😝🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Dude. How do you do all of this? Even just thinking about all the problems and hours spent troubleshooting them makes my head hurt. You got yourself a subscriber.
There's plenty of trial and error, and dead ends, and broken stuff! I mostly do this tech stuff in the winter, summer is too busy with boats and yard projects!
@@saveitforparts well said 😂
@@saveitforparts boats n hoes!
I love that there are people like you in the world. Curious minds full of enthusiasm. I have no idea what you are doing but I know I like it. You make the world a better place because you provide something different.
I love this guy. There are so many radio hobbies that require you to shell out stacks just for some decent equipment.
Then this guy pulls a “ummmm actually 🤓” and fabricates an entire setup for less than like $50.
An absolute legend.
nO U cAn'T dO ThAt u NeEd tO buY oUr 50K vERsion!!!.....Soyface emoji (there wasn't one on youtube)
Yeah, but I'd like to know the net worth of his workshop just before he was able to build any of these projects
This was really enjoyable! Fun edit and really interesting project.
Strange place to find you. On this side of youtube is everything possible.
And on my list of people I didn’t expect to see on this channel…
You are the one person I'd least expect to find on here...
I did not expect you to be here(love you btw)
onetopic???
That is a real cyberdeck - not these often useless toys people build. In my opinion, a cyberdeck is an utilitarian custom computer for specialised purposes (just remember the "heroes" of these cyberpunk novels and what they were doing). And this device ticks all these boxes.
Thank you! It is very inspirational.
who cares if stuff is "often useless" its just a fun little hobby
Your hardware knowledge (and stash) is truly impressive. This is by far the most jerryrigged cyberdeck I’ve ever seen. You inspired me to look at my rats nest of old hardware to see if I can use anything. I can’t wait to see the next project you work on! 🤝
Really enjoyed this longer vid! Getting to see the process of making something is always a lot of fun. Keep it up! I'm particularly interested in seeing if you can get the array to work
Me too, I think it will be a fun attempt! This video could have easily been even longer, I had over two hours of footage and had to struggle to keep it to 20 minutes!
this project was amazing! that panel and box looked clean as hell. absolute maniac going from issue to issue. i can be the same with projects but the way you ripped open that computer when the bios battery died killed me. love the channel!
Somehow I missed your channel over the years. I am too dumb to do anything myself, but I love to watch people engineering something from junk. Loved this thing so much, hope you will have fun with this ❤
Love this, there's something so cool about custom tech in the modern day when most things like this are done with a phone, pc, or raspberrypi
This is a Steve Wozniak type of guy you want to be a around for a start up - Great Upload !
I wanted to make a business back in the late 2000's measuring wireless phone company's radio frequencies, then selling the data to marketing firms. Didn't go through with it because I was hanging out with people held me back. I'm sure it would have been a minor success, you have a lot of passion in what you do.
Never let anyone hold you back from your own idea's 👍
What kind of data could you get from that, that would something you could sell? Just curious
Hell yes. 10/10 Great build sir! I had no idea gqrx would run on a 686. Great idea for the patch board for the rtl-sdr. Coolest radio build I've seen all year
I love your videos.
I don’t really understand how most of the things mentioned in your videos work but i find it so fascinating to watch you create something new out of scraps.
the fact that his schematics look like concept art for a game
this video is golden, I'm subscribed
Stuff like this is so interesting, and i love to see there's still ways of using old proprietary hardware and giving it new life!
I loved every second of this video! From hearing the enthusiasm and humor towards your problem-solution attitude, watching you cycle through damaged scrap parts regressing in technology as you continued, your form factoring considerations, and the final demonstration. I can only ever hope to be as good at salvage and jerry-rigging as you are!
Coolest thing I've ever seen in UA-cam made out of unused parts, Absolutely love it
I just discovered this channel, and I absolutely love it! I love old style hackers, and you are a per fect example of one. Keep this on, you're great.
I am a guy who doesn't stick to videos for more than 5 minutes, but this definitely kept me hooked up all the way. Great video mate.
I loved this video. In depth, hack-ey and held together by a lot of passion and a tasteful amount of jank Found another inspirational tech binge channel to add to my list
Ha, yeah that probably describes half my content :-D
18:20 was the moment I totally lost it :) This is so ridiculously cool, I can't even find words for it. Just never stop doing, what you do!
You're an absolute legend. I love ripping into older tech from companies which didn't stand the test time. Fantastic video.
Your display of technical knowledge is incredible, these are such cool projects, keep it up!!!
Dude, this is truly great. Round of applause for your skill and creativity. 👏
Can't wait to see what else you have on your channel.
Having just found your channel, I just wanted to say
this is amazing!
I love seeing someone who really puts time in their videos and hobbies. I know nothing about this but I've watched 3 already.
Words cannot express how impressed I am. Instantly subscribed!
Just found your channel, and this is exactly the kind of video that I have always been looking for
I love how much this looks like a movie prop or something. really neat stuff man
Tweezers are a life saver when working with ribbon cables and other small electronics. Awesome video btw. I learned a lot of random things from this video.
Amazing, talented in knowledgeable stuffs (gear) and organized with the Velcro. Very very impressive.
Why are there so few subscribers. This channel is a gold mine. You definitely got my sub! Thanks for the amazing content
Holy moly! Had no idea this was a thing, and you sir showed me something truly amazing and inspiring. Thank you and keep up the good work!
That was a fun watch and a great project. I like that you are getting use out of old equipment. Q4OS is my go-to for older hardware too
I absolutely love this channel, and m very lucky to have found it, you can see the guy is very passsionate about what he does, mean while creating awesome stuff , you got yourself a subscriber sir
I love stuff like this! Keep making awesome stuff!
Im so glad I found this channel! I know fuck all about anything technological other than base use of consumer goods, but listening to you problem solve and MacGyver your way through this was incredible! Happily subscribed for more.
This video again inspired me enthusiasm to communication tech since I’ve been sucked into annoying working projects for quite a longtime and forget it’s used to be so interesting for me 😢
You would make the world's greatest electronics professor. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
Whoa!
Dude, I'm 200% amazed with your project - It's fantastic!
You just got a new subscriber!
PS: NGL, you look like someone that Fox mulder would love paying a visit 💜
Your screens and hacking briefcase look like what the tech in movies/games looks like. That's pretty cool
Found your channel recently, its great so far
Wow, this is rad!! What a watch. Very cool. I enjoy when people share their hobbies and passions with us. This is way cool!
Saudações do Brasil!
Hi there. I recently subscribed to your channel and have been watching your videos.
I must say, I love the content. Amazing what you can build from junk.
I really liked the Ethernet port and all the details & work you put into making it!
I have no idea what that does, why you would want/need to do the things it does, but I'm glad you're happy about it doing the thing. It looks very cool too!
Really nice work here and very cool that you shared it with the r/cyberdeck community. I _feel_ like we don't see enough completed and useful projects over there.
Blue flavored USB sounds delicious, too.
And best of all you paid the cat tax!
Dude. I've been on an incredible journey learning about how things are broadcast and received and it has led me to this! The world of waves is incredible.
It really is! I've always wanted to learn more, and it really helped me to do hands-on stuff like this.
Awesome dude. I thought in the last video I watched, I bet that cyberdeck was expensive. I didn't take into account your channel name and theme lol. Incredible.
Great build and super cool that you can pull from NOAA directly. I had to chuckle at the Orinoco reference as it was always a card I wanted to buy, but couldn't afford it back in the day.
I can't believe this is real. This is insane man! Awesome job.
The algorithm has done me a solid. Subscribed and now watching your backlog.
I didn't get many things in this video as I don't understand much about satellites but what you have made is something mazing bro. Hatts off
Nice video mate. that's really amazing to see someone be happy with what he's/she's doing.
This is awesome, I thought you needed a certain antenna to receive those weather images, I'm definitely going to have to try this out now!
The little rabbit ears that come with an RTL-SDR kit work pretty well, as long as you have them extended to the right length and angle. I've also made one out of coat hangers / random metal rods. If you want better performance and a stronger signal there are designs like a QFH that can be made at home, they're just a little more complicated (I made two and only the 2nd one really works).
this was so cool seeing the inside of a datalux again.. love it. These were the older models, but they were bought by A LOT of departments because they were fanless and made out of cast aluminum. we had several survive car fires, crashes etc.. the model you are using was a pain to repair.
I like how knowledgeable and crafty this man is, defo subbing great work I am amused!
Now this is the sort of mad science project that I can get behind
This guy is the kid from any 80's neighborhood that could jerry rig the cable connection to get the Disney Channel for free. I absolutely loved watching this, reminded me of several guys I knew from my childhood.
I wonder how did he get all the knowledge, I mean he knows everything about IT and stuff. Respect !
jesus christ i just happened to run into your channel at the space pirate video and it got me on a spiral binge for all your material, I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!! this is amazing content and its even educational. love you man, keep up the good work and thank you so much for all this.
Thanks! Glad it's entertaining and at least a little educational :-)
This is a Sweet Idea, I always like looking for different ways to use my junk besides loading them up with Emulaotos
I'm hoping this gets more use than some of my other special-purpose computers. I made a little emulator arcade system that mostly gathers dust now, and I never have time for my drawing tablet. I haven't learned my lesson though, one of my upcoming vidoes is to hack a Kindle into something more useful that will then probably not get used!
@@saveitforparts Yessir!
I just recently decided to attempt emulation on a Kindle... But then I realized I Re-Gifted my kids old ones to Nieces & nephews.
Hopefully neighbors & friends start offering me old electronics again soon
Keep up the good work!
I can't tell you how long I've craved a scuffed hardware video like this to show up on my home page. Oh mighty algorithm bless this channel
A really interesting video. One of the best piece-togethers I’ve ever seen. And with satcom tech! Great project 👍🏻
It seems like most cyberdecks are solutions looking for a problem, whereas you just decided to stop torturing yourself whenever you wanting to play with the SDRs. This thing is great!
This is ridiculously cool!
Love this channel. Never lose the creativity dude!
That’s a pretty interesting project. Keep doin what you enjoy dude.
If we ever go into some sort of apocalipse we need to protect this guy at all costs
😂😂😂😂
Nice, I've got an older Dell laptop with a dead battery too but couldn't decide if it was worth getting another. I replaced the old drive with an SSD a while ago and put Lubuntu on it. It runs pretty good (dual core, 4GB memory) and I use it mainly for videos when I'm sleeping, and sometimes practice shell commands/scripting. I used to work at a small computer repair shop about 10 years ago and when we shut it down, we held onto a TON of the old hardware that is, by now, obsolete except for some niche use cases maybe. I haven't figured out how to dispose of whatever isn't worth keeping though.
This is the coolest channel i have found so far, i wish i had this much stuff and this much knowledge lol
Great project, brother! Tech's not broken until starting it up is biology.
Great stuff, keep it coming!
Bro I wish I had a friend like you to do stuff like this with!
Just saw this vid while scrolling on tech stuff, new subscriber here. I wanna see more of this stuff!! Love it!
I'm glad guys like this exist and they film experiments for benefit of society. Thanks youtube algorithm.
There is something you can add that has a good chance . Maybe a different generator that produces a higher voltage but with lower amps and in between the steam engine and generator add some gearing . Hope this helps , great video by the way !
Dell docking stations through USBC firewire is actually pretty great. Not only can they provide 80 watts to a laptop they can do 4K and 1080p displays simultaneously as well as audio and multiple USB channels. All of them at 60 FPS
Just found this video. Very entertaining for someone who’s interested in computer hardware + software. Thanks ! Earned a Sub!
aight man you sold me your channel, aside from the cool uses aesthetics alone this is incredible
wish utube would recommend more like this. subbed

Reasourceful, adaptive & knowledgable...an old school techie in a younger version! Saw the image of the seg,emt....very educational. Re-learning I.T....amazing channel!
And hilarious, too!
Im geeking out man. Thanks for the cool video.
Btw you said “it’s not quite the prettiest” but man it’s beautiful lol. I loved the end product.
I love this video. If you split it up and have expanded run time for how you do all the sections that will be great!
I'm in agreement with Lemonblazer. A very interesting well thought out just putting (stuff) together video. Great thanks.
Advance congratulations for 100k 🎉❤
i have nothing to do with any of this but boy did I enjoy it. cheers mate, keep creating.
I do IT in the business world, docking stations are huge now with a big push for laptops that works can use for hybrid WFH and in-office. Each user has a dock with monitors and KB/M at work and potentially in a home office as well (although most just plug into their own TV or monitor at home). The Dell ones are pretty reliable, well built, and also partially modular. They are expensive as hell though... Dell...
Outside of the big PC manufacturers, CalDigit makes fantastic docks as well.
They weren’t lying when they said you can learn anything on UA-cam
Thank you for the amazing content!, Subbed!, look forward to seeing more adventures like this ! I was fully invested for the whole ride and was not disappointed 😁
I work in telecommunications networking , I mess around with a few projects at home… lol I thought I was pretty slick 😂but I now realize that I’m Fred Flinstone compared to you being George Jetson 🤓… thank you for such a awesome channel.. every video you share with us feeds
My fire to do more, keep it up !!
That first laptop you tried may have just made those angry beeps because it couldn't see the display, not because anything was shorted. Great video either way!
