It's tough making it out there. Ishida is very meticulous and a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to writing stories. Still, I like how his thought process towards creating stories is explored is human. We all have doubts about accomplishing our own individual goals and he's not afraid to express them
I understand how he feels. As a writer I am a perfectionist who judges my own work very harshly, so much so I keep rewriting my work because I feel the quality has become outstripped by my ability. But I wish Ishida could appreciate Tokyo Ghoul, it's not only amazing, it not only helped me out of a dark place, but it inspired me to be serious about my writing. I would not be where I am without Tokyo Ghoul/
Imagine writing a story for 7 years and hoping to create a certain type of story in the beginning and writing yourself into a corner and still wanting to write a good story. He might have lost sight of his original story/art halfway through. I’d imagine the whole thing would leave a bad taste in my mouth if it wasn’t about the money but the story.
I mean it’s his opinion and everything, but I think objectively, it was a **good** manga. It sold well, had interesting characters, had a cool power system, great fights, interesting twists, and a diverse cast of interesting, developed characters (something not everyone can do). He wrote wonderfully through pretty much all the manga until near the end, but it was admittedly due to burnout. Tokyo Ghoul was probably popular with a large audience, like Attack on Titan, since it had great action, great psychology, and just an overall good story.
I wish there was more series like tokyo ghoul. With a tragic mc who has his normal life taken away and becomes a badass. I don't care if my taste are edgy, I WANT MORE STUFF LIKE THIS. AND A REMAKE OF THE TOKYO GHOUL ANIME.
Tokyo Ghoul means so much to me. To see Ishida say that it wasn’t a success hurts, but I can’t say that it was unexpected. It made me think back when TG Root A was still airing, to which the studio threw out Ishida’s drafts for the season and wrote out a messy script of their own. Ishida really wants a lot of freedom when it came to his creative process, and I’m not sure if that event might have affected him. I also enjoyed the ending to the manga, but it’s kinda sad to see most of the audience approach it differently. Even talking about it, now, makes me hope for TG to be given the Brotherhood treatment.

I identified so much with Kaneki and how he struggled mentally throughout(accept I didnt have powers or wanted to eat people lol). Even part of the way through Re even.
@@king_alonne3707 Glad I'm not the only one who related to the many identities of Kaneki. He was such a well written and traumatized character. Though for me, it was human and white hair Kaneki that I related too. And a slight bit of Black Reaper Kaneki. But really just his first 2 identities. I wonder what he would still think about Tokyo Ghoul if he knew how much Kaneki and his story mean to some people. I know he eventually hated it, but I wonder if he would change his mind if he knew how much that story connected with people.
I’m not surprised that he says stuff like this Even at the end of volume 16 he was talking about how stressful writing and drawing each chapter was and how it even affected him physically and mentally It’s also becoming even more clear as to why he wanted the anime to deviate from the manga after the first season (Well even in that case Marvelous still didn’t allow him to create the story he wanted since they basically cut a fuck ton of the stuff him and the director had come up with)
The manga is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed the one best themes of the entire series which is finding meaning in life and no commiting suicide even when life goes to shit. I love the style and although people don't like the ending I think the ending is completely and to the point but not perfect. I really enjoyed it. Not everyone will share the same opinion and that is ok.
Man i love Tokyo ghoul, but I definitely agree about the latter half of Tg :re story was horribly rushed... It felt like Sui Ishida just wanted the story to end soon... To this day, I'm still confused on if Eto survived at the end or not?(Manga ver)
The tokyo ghoul anime got me into reading the Manga and also introducing me to TKs music the op is still remember to this day but I do agree that about halfway into Re it did go all over the place but it is still a great Manga thanks for the video chibi
The first half of Tokyo Ghoul:re was AMAZING. Simply some of the best story I have ever seen. That being said, if he was ever to return to TG... (I know he wont) but a redo of the second half of TG:re would be amazing. The anime REALLY betrayed him.
The Tokyo ghoul manga is amazing. The anime however didn’t do the series justice. Had Tokyo ghoul recieved a better anime adaptation it would be even more popular and successful
I think it's better if he don't have a strict schedule for writing his new series. Tokyo Ghoul started amazing, but went downhill, same with Re and maybe because the release schedule was to much for him. The first season of the anime was amazing, the chapters the second season would cover was where the story went downhill, so I understand why they decided change it in anime, but it's just became worse.
I literally loved Tokyo ghoul and it’s still my favorite manga out there. However it does have its flaws. Do those flaws make it a non-successful manga? Hell no. This manga/anime is beloved by hundreds of thousands of people. For very good reason
I watched Tokyo Ghoul season 1 a while ago and thought it was so mediocre. If it weren't for Kaneki's edgy style and a banger OP I don't think Tokyo Ghoul would've had the success it did
I didsagree with him. The first part of Tokyo Ghoul was a 9-10/10. The second part,re ,was a 7-8/10,due to it being slow and listless in the beginnings, and ironically being convoluted and kinda rushed at the end( alot of storylines either ended or began to late into the story). The art in re, is better than the first part, and it is great. All in all its like an 8.5/10 series for me. I am happy Ken ended happily married with Touka, and that she wasn't killed off as some nonsense tragedy like in Gurren Lagan.
I actually respect Japanese authors ability to present their honest and sincere ideas without caring for what the fans want. You may support their morals and their ideas and you may get offended by them. Either way, you got yourself an untainted piece of art that pushed you to spin the gears in your head, and come up with your opinion. Even though, I never read Tokyo Ghoul, I really felt that with Attack on Titan and its ending and how the fan base split. Still, I respect authors like Ishida Sui and Hajime Isayama for presenting their point of views in their stories without being tainted by the ideas of anyone beside them. Also, it is amazing that he was able to break the shackles of weekly schedule. It allows for more freedom, and it certainly reduces the risk of him endangering his health like and going through what Yoshiro Togashi and Kentaro Miura faced.
@@theanimerapper6351 That is true, I remember reading that he was going to kill all characters in the end. However, I wouldn't call that being influenced by the fans because even the ending he chose sparked so much controversy. And to be honest, the ending wasn't that much different, everyone lost something in the end even if they didn't die.
I thought for the ending for the manga was good and it was better than the anime because in the anime they skip a lot of things from the manga so the ending of the manga was good and same goes for Akame ga kill because the manga was better than the anime I still want that series to get a remake and I wouldn't mind if the studio remake season 2 and 3 because they did skip so many things from the manga
Ghouls can't be friends with humans? No they HAVE to mingle with humans and pretend to be normal to live. It was like they have to put up a facade to live.
Honestly, I can't blame him. TG leaves a lot to be desired. At times it even felt rushed It still holds a special place in my heart though. I really like how the author keeping it real
I love tokyo ghoul it was one of the first series i became obsessed with. It means so much to me to this day. Part 1 isolated from part 2 was so good its amongst my favorite fictional media. But part 2 to me personally was so shaky and felt inconsistent I didnt like the payoff and the balancing of the larger cast characters from part 1 got pushed aside and I didnt grow connected to all the characters it felt like part 2 was trying to get me to care about. It has some good highs and many meh moments. But the good highs imo only reached part 1 but never surpassed part 1 and alongside all the shaky moments too, part 2 just falls below. Also to me personally the ending was just ok. And I will say furata felt like a weak final antagonist. Too much trolling not enough actual character. And his threats always felt underwhelming even though there were stakes when reading. Also dont get me started on how they concluded the doctor who started it all. I agree with him offing himself at the end but his motivation and threat level felt disappointing too. So tokyo ghoul is good overall but it had some flaws that really bothered me. Also the fighting and power system got out of control in re. I didnt like how the combat evolved. It felt so dangerous and technical part 1. And each fight and blow felt so real and tense. it became just who has the flashier kagura and higher levels of ghoul reading (i forgot the term) the fight panelling and choreo was all flashyness and barely any actual structure behind each blow Also kaneki even though technically he was stronger in part 2, has really satisfying fights part 1 for how weak he was but part 2 he feels so weak. And he was supposed to be amongst the strongest but it never felt like that. He got so many satisfying victories part 1 but his few victories in part 2 always felt cheap to me. (Eto and the white haired op dude wanted him to win and then whether he was holding back because of how much he likes juuzou he didnt win too. What meaningful fights did he actually win part 2. Furata felt underwhelming and then rize was just a mindless zombie at the end) Alsl throughout part 1 i loved his struggle with his human and ghoul side and it took a toll on him with how he desended into insanity. But part 2 just brushes aside that problem with his amnesia that hes given and mostly throws away all that conflict under the rug. It still emerges when hes regaining his memory but i wouldve loved him confronting it head on. finding it from the himself in part 1 like he was at the end of part 1 instead of him being reset in part 2. and it just being resolved naturally as he gets his memories back. The final arc of part 1 was so good and cool then it threw it all away part 2. My preference for what i wish happened: White hair dude shouldve let him barely get away after beating him up not leaving him on the brink of death to capture him
Personally I'd say Tokyo Ghoul is a 10/10 for me and Tokyo Ghoul Re: is a 8/10. If Ishida didn't end up rushing the last half of Re: due to burnout, we really would've had something beyond amazing

Can he OBJECTIVELY call his series, which earned a manga AND anime adaption, plus mainstream appeal, a failure? There are literal TONS of (better) creators who dream of getting to the same point as Ishida.
yeah but it was clearly that Tokyo Ghoul's outcome wasn't what he originally planned, for example Ishida changed so much of his ways in writing Tokyo Ghoul to develop more of Kaneki's charater after the incident of the 11th ward. self-satisfaction always opposes with shortcomings and failure, I think Ishida meant that Tokyo Ghoul was somewhat a bit of a shortcoming at somepoint. but on a side note he would have only stopped at the original and never continued to Re:.

I’m not surprised that he says stuff like this
Even at the end of volume 16 he was talking about how stressful writing and drawing each chapter was and how it even affected him physically and mentally
It’s also becoming even more clear as to why he wanted the anime to deviate from the manga after the first season
(Well even in that case Marvelous still didn’t allow him to create the story he wanted since they basically cut a fuck ton of the stuff him and the director had come up with)
If the Tokyo Ghoul anime was handled correctly in this Era of anime.. smh..
I should one day get back into Choujin X. Heard it's been getting pretty good lately
its fire
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan when are you gonna start reviewing and analyzing Choujin X? I need those TG level analyses again.
Tokyo Ghoul needs an anime remake because they did Ishida's work dirty
Tokyo Ghoul has such a special place in my heart, although not perfect i love it so much. I've read and watched it well over 10 times.
If it gets the well deserved anime remake it'll be god tier
One of the best manga's of all time
I fell in love with sui ishidas art and conceps
Man i love Tokyo ghoul, but I definitely agree about the latter half of Tg :re story was horribly rushed... It felt like Sui Ishida just wanted the story to end soon...
To this day, I'm still confused on if Eto survived at the end or not?(Manga ver)
I like the way Chibi says success. It's so sussy.
I saw the title of this video and went WHAT?
TG manga is the definition of perfection for me. TG manga unlike the anime is so underapreciated I personally recommend it.
I think he was especially disappointed with the anime.
Tokyo ghoul deserves brotherhood treatment.
The tokyo ghoul anime got me into reading the Manga and also introducing me to TKs music the op is still remember to this day but I do agree that about halfway into Re it did go all over the place but it is still a great Manga thanks for the video chibi
I enjoyed TG as a manga series so kinda sucks to see him say this but at least he's keeping true to himself with how he feels
The first half of Tokyo Ghoul:re was AMAZING. Simply some of the best story I have ever seen.
That being said, if he was ever to return to TG... (I know he wont) but a redo of the second half of TG:re would be amazing.
The anime REALLY betrayed him.
Tokyo ghoul and Choujin x have been good reads
It's a good author advice to write for yourself, but it can be hard in such a commercial world.
Still one of my most favorite manga ever. The anime though, I can see it kinda ruined the whole series for some people.
Also enjoying Choujin X rn.
It really needs a Brotherhood treatment
Have a great day bro
I literally loved Tokyo ghoul and it’s still my favorite manga out there. However it does have its flaws. Do those flaws make it a non-successful manga? Hell no. This manga/anime is beloved by hundreds of thousands of people. For very good reason
banger songs and an iconic mask is all that came out of the botched adaption
Till this day I hope we get a reboot
But they do get influenced by fans. Isayama changed the ending when aot got popular
I will read his new series as well because it sounds interesting
I agree, it started fire and went left quick gang; CHiA!
Tokyo Ghoul is a good horror series for days to come that is still worth watching.
Reading*
im just happy tg:re ending wasnt like aot 139
I thought for the ending for the manga was good and it was better than the anime because in the anime they skip a lot of things from the manga so the ending of the manga was good and same goes for Akame ga kill because the manga was better than the anime I still want that series to get a remake and I wouldn't mind if the studio remake season 2 and 3 because they did skip so many things from the manga
"What's 1,000 minus seven?"
Tokyo ghoul wasn't flawless, but it was a great journey.
Sad to see him feel this way about TG, i legitimately think it was a good manga but anime was a letdown of his source material
Tokyo ghoul… what a throw back
Great 👍🏻 video nice 👍🏻 hype!!!!!!!!!!
I loved it
1. YOU DON'T SAY!? FIRST TIME???
2. I feel sorry for this man...
the animation ruined his masterpiece work ... a lot of people talk shit about Tokyo Ghoul based on the anime only which is sad
Ghouls can't be friends with humans? No they HAVE to mingle with humans and pretend to be normal to live. It was like they have to put up a facade to live.
Honestly, I can't blame him. TG leaves a lot to be desired. At times it even felt rushed
It still holds a special place in my heart though. I really like how the author keeping it real
The desire for the most part was fulfilled but the last part did have some rushed parts.
NGL, i followed Tokyo Ghoul until the half of the second manga series. Now take what i may say for it's worth, i enjoy Choujin X more.
And each fight and blow felt so real and tense. it became just who has the flashier kagura and higher levels of ghoul reading (i forgot the term) the fight panelling and choreo was all flashyness and barely any actual structure behind each blow
Also kaneki even though technically he was stronger in part 2, has really satisfying fights part 1 for how weak he was but part 2 he feels so weak. Furata felt underwhelming and then rize was just a mindless zombie at the end)
Alsl throughout part 1 i loved his struggle with his human and ghoul side and it took a toll on him with how he desended into insanity.
He was a bit salty about that pressure comment xd
I haven't finished watching the video so I don't know if you addressed this, (I apologize if you did) but are you ever going to review or make a vid on choujin x again?
It was hoed by the animation studio but overall a peak series
Can he OBJECTIVELY call his series, which earned a manga AND anime adaption, plus mainstream appeal, a failure? There are literal TONS of (better) creators who dream of getting to the same point as Ishida.
Well the snime was a failure
yeah but it was clearly that Tokyo Ghoul's outcome wasn't what he originally planned, for example Ishida changed so much of his ways in writing Tokyo Ghoul to develop more of Kaneki's charater after the incident of the 11th ward.
self-satisfaction always opposes with shortcomings and failure, I think Ishida meant that Tokyo Ghoul was somewhat a bit of a shortcoming at somepoint. but on a side note he would have only stopped at the original and never continued to Re:.
