Hey Ben! I had a big drywall job about 2 months ago. My coworker and I had a little friendly argument on how to apply the paper tape. I add a ton of mud behind the tape like you taught us and wipe it away after applying the tape.
My coworker claimed that if you add TOO much mud, it will blister/bubble. So we split up into two rooms. He did his method, I did mine. Let’s just say he had quite a bit of blisters to cut away and refill the next day 😂.
Thanks Ben for the lessons! 👍🏻

Just finished prepping my bedroom for painting. After watching refresher vids from my favorite Canadian contractors, I have fixed fine cracks from settling, prefilled and taped some corners that my Mom tried to cover with crappy silicone caulking, and filled all the tiny holes from pictures. The walls already have lost all the spots from old spackling and the room looks great! Can't wait to cover the old painted-on stencils from the 90's with KILZ and make this place my own! Thanks for all the help with learning new tricks. I am saving a TON on remodeling my folks' old place!

I have some round horse hair brushes I purchased in the early 2000s just before they stoped making them that I brush mud in my corners with, it was made so that it fit nicely in pan and left room so you could work. I had a friend in the 90s that used an old straw small hand broom that they make with a metal nub for a handle, he would cut it at an angle so the brush flowed the way he brushed the mud in the corner, and it seemed to fit in his pan pretty decent, while leaving room for a 4" knife. Another tip is application with your knife, if you use the corner of the pan to put the right amount of mud on your knife, you can run all that mud on a lot faster running your knife the same direction the corner runs. I can tape about 4800 sq ft of drywall in about 8 hours and have plenty of time for smoke breaks, but my usual system back in the day was to tape the flats on day 1, and then coat the bead and butts right away. On day 2 I taped the corners, first coated the flats, and then second coated the butts, and finished spotting any nails I missed.

Grew up in a family of builders. And they were good…masons, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and some of them were pretty good with drywall. This guy is hands down the best I have ever seen. There is an art to this craft that not everyone is capable of doing. I can do just about anything crafty, building, creating but drywalling? Nope. My sander is my best friend. I'm a general contractor. For the most part I'm self-taught at mudding. so, it was pretty surprising to see that a lot of the stuff I figured out on my own is exactly how you do it. cool, glad to see my way is not so strange. I should give my old man some credit, he taught me the basics. btw the only reason I came across your channel is because of the "ridging" problem you get when you apply new mud over already dried mud. I was curious to see if people had any solutions that where knew to me or if they had a more scientific explanation as to why it happens. saw your vid on it and you deal with it the same way I do so that's cool. as to your reasoning for why it happens, that was interesting. I never figured it had to do with the pressure being applied., ill try to play with that next time. always figured it had to do with using a different batch of mud or it being a different state of hardening. either way very comprehensive vid's. my professional seal of approval, for whatever its worth.

MOST EXCELLENT TIMING! sorry for yelling but I just had to show my happiness with this video! I just hung and "prepped" my drywall. I went overboard and used 90 min durabond over all my joints to act as a filler/binder. (after overdoing the V-cuts almost everywhere except tapered to tapered joints, they just got pre filled) Taping is next. Going to use the TapeBuddy. I did have one question for you concerning inside corners. A while back you did a video using a corner roller to apply the bud to those inside corners and after smoothing out you embedded the mud. Do you recommend that method for beginners or should I stick with the tape buddy for all my taping needs?

Great video, Ben! I just found your channel last evening and watched several of your videos already and have learned a lot! Question...I have a covered porch with a drywall ceiling. The corners are fine, but the tape has failed out on the main areas of the ceiling. I can see that mesh tape was used. When I remove the tape, I will (obviously) have the build-up of drywall compound on either side of where the tape was. Should I pre-fill those gaps with mud, let dry, and then apply the tape? Should I use paper tape? Also, would I use the quick-set mud? I live in the states, so I will need to investigate product options. Any recommendations would be HUGELY appreciated! NOW A QUESTION, YOU SAID YOU DONT LIKE MESH TAPE, IN MY EXPIERENCE USING MESH WITH PREMIXED MUD, IT CRACKS, USING MESH JUST ON FLATS, (recessed seams), with quick set mud, 45 or 90, ive never had a issue, again just on recessed seams, saves a lot of time. What are your thoughts

Why not a corner tool when taping the corners?

Hi Ben, I’m sadly seeing your video after I taped my job. I took a door frame out to open it up. I added 4” of drywall where my door wall used to be. I had 1/8” higher on my drywall insert fix. I’m learning now from your video I should have levelled everything first but I taped and will be levelling after. What does that do to my job?? I don’t want cracking.

Hi master why 1mm gap between gypsum boards best than 0mm gap?❤❤❤

Everybody ive worked with who sucked at drywall all used that grid tape and every time youd see that tape past the mud..

Why do you chose paper tape instead of mesh tape?

I find when you do use any power tools for mixing it seems to kick off faster, does anyone happen to notice this?

It can. Mixing too long will also make it kick faster.

    Hi buddy
I’m wondering with old horse hair plasters house is it better to completely remove it all and re dry wall with new product or can it be made flat and look new and fresh
Obviously the old horse hair is far from flat and looks horrible under lights
    Advice please

I'd do almost anything to avoid the work and mess of tearing it out, unless you really need to get into the walls for some reason. If you search for "plaster and lath repair" there are videos on all kinds of techniques, from skim coating to glue injection. Once you can keep the plaster from falling off, skim coating it will be a fair amount of work, but it will eventually work. If you want to make it look good in a hurry, you could just use a good quality flat wall covering with that cement they sell in tubs (the prepasting on most wallpaper won't stick to anything too rough). It will look good for maybe 10 years, and then you could use mesh tape and mud over the seams, and paint it. If you do a good job, it will look just like painted drywall.

      @@pcno2832 thank you
I have prepared my self for the full removal of it all with all the mess so to hear that I can possibly do it without doing that is music to my ears
      Thanks a lot
Love all your vids they are very helpful and informative keep them going 👌🏼

Next question. Since I prefilled all my joints and V joints with Durabond 90 I'm assuming I can set the tape buddy to thin instead of thick correct?

    • @vancouvercarpenter
      @vancouvercarpenter  10 місяців тому

Yes. Although I personally preferred the thicker setting. I like having a little more mud to play with.

I keep getting orange plastic nap / boggers in my skim coat. Is this something USG puts in their mud?

Hello, when replacing only the lower half of drywall due to a flood, do you 1st fill the tapered edge and allow to dry and then tape like a butt joint? I think this is called a bastard joint? Thanks
