How much more power do you need? I think the powertrain is well matched to the chassis. Old, solid, and proven reliable. It’s no pansy crossover, it’s not for every one :)
In Australia they sell 13,000 land cruiser Prados per year making it the biggest selling vehicle of its type in the country. Add to this the 11,000 larger LandCruiser wagons australia is one of the biggest markets for the LC in all model types. But U fortunately it only comes with a 2.8 litre diesel which is a tad underpowered.
Great review. I have GX470 with 205k Miles that I use to tow our travel trailer and explore backroads. It’s an amazing suv still has no rattles or issues and drives way better than my sisters brand new suburban imo. Secret Toyota 4x4 value right now for sure. 4Runner and FJC parts bolt on and they actually have a fast growing community that modifies them with 35”+ tires and long travel suspensions
I've got a 2017 GX460 Premium with 111k miles. The engine really needs premium gas to run right and make torque. It will 100% run on 87 but the torque really fills in with 93 and mpg's go up by about 1-1.5mpg. In gear acceleration on the highway is way better with 93. Gets even better if you change your air filter every 10k-15k miles ($15 for a Denso filter on Amazon). Throttle response gets even better if you rip out that stupid charcoal filter in the factory air box. You'll get another .25-.5 mpg as well. Currently experimenting with the Crawford EcoBlock Q3. So far, torque feels clearly stronger below 3500rpm and I'm up 1.5 mpg's with same commute. Fewer down shifts on the highway. Current gas prices ($4.05/gallon at Costco for 93) mean it will pay for itself in about three tanks if the trend holds. It's a very nice place to be on the road.
Proven reliability to last forever. The UN, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Muslim Freedom Fighters (ISIS, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, etc) , Columbian Druglords , etc don't order and prefer this Toyota Prado for no reasons. They all know this is the go-anywhere and come back safely, and ultimate escape SUV.
I am dealing with a strawberry milkshake and they just replaced the transmission, radiator and AT cooler (under warranty)... 2014 @ 50k miles. SAD! Coolant in the transmission. BS, man.
...frame on dated & and doesn't hav apple play.... who the fk cares.. it will last 350k miles. My Lexus is 10 years old and every single component still works on it from the air-conditioned seats to The Turning headlights.
According to the repair pal, this car is rated 3.5 in reliability. That's lower than cx5, crv, 4runner. I also found lots of people are having problems with this vehicle. Expensive car, expensive to maintain
Definitely understand. When I was looking at Lexus leases recently, I had to do a double take because leasing a GX460 was cheaper than leasing an ES350, an RX350, LX (obviously), RC350, yet the GX460 has some *serious* off road cred.
I totally Agree. I am waiting for the 2022 GX 460 to come to the dealerships. I am buying myself a retirement present that’s going to last probably longer than I. There is going to be a total electronic upgrade for the 2022 and that’s good enough for me.
True but this one has the legendary tundra engine. 4 runner is good with a proven v6. The land cruiser is expensive and not as luxurious with similar durability.... So if you want luxury and offroad gx is great.
Hey thanks great job I recently purchased a 2019 gx premium with 62 k miles I'm totally impressed. I'm an old honda guy. This thing is by far the nicest vehicle I've ever driven. You explained alot thanks well done
I have had every single update of the land cruiser prado since 2010. I have the new one-2018 update. You are very correct they are super great off roaders.
My buddy has a 2012 Lexus GX and he raves about it. I owned a 2002 Toyota Sequoia for 11 years then I got a 2013 Highlander Hybrid. With 2 kids the Highlander felt small and I was missing the up-sized Sequoia. I was in the market recently for a full-sized SUV so naturally I looked at a 2018 Sequoia and 2018 Land Cruiser. I felt for the price of those Toyota SUV's I could step up into the Lexus luxury SUV's. So after Lexus cash incentives I was able to order a 2018 Lexus LX570 fully optioned and it only cost $4,000 more than the Toyota Land Cruiser.
I have a 2016 4Runner limited with auto side steps. I swapped out all the interior lamps and exterior bulbs to LED and I mean ALL of them. With Weathertech wind deflectors (not on the hood, or moonroof -that's atrocious) I now get many compliments and sometimes it's easy for me to pretend I'm in a Lexus and convince others that it's just a badge shy of being one. There's not a day that goes by that I don't covet the LX570, but there's NO WAY I'd get rid of my 4Runner in classic silver metallic and Yokohama (so cool because so HARD to find) factory 20" wheels. So my question is....would I be an idiot to own both?? Lol. I know it's not practical but for the love of the similarities and disparities....
I own both a 1997 white 4runner Limited with brown interior and a 2018 LX570. The 4runner has more than 350,000+ trouble free miles and everything mechanical and electrical is still original. Unbelievable!! The 4Runner is long paid off and it makes a great beater SUV for hauling a utility trailer, parking at Walmart ;-), and leaving at airport for extended parking. So it's very practical to keep and maintain Toyotas because in the long run they will pay for themselves.
Noypi54494 I know exactly what you mean...those 96-99 two tone limiteds were solid. I had the same ‘99 white one, 4x4 with the silver body kit, beige leather...it had a factory steel rear wind deflector on top of the tailgate, more wood in the interior, and those Toyota Limited alloy rims are still sick today. That trim really was a Lexus back then. The 4x4 Limited was HEAVY though. The engine had really smooth throttle response and it was just a beautiful time for the 4Runner. I’m not sure who owns it today, but I suspect someone is nursing that beauty today...That particular set up, LOADED to the maxwas a pretty rare sight on the road back then in the US. It was $35k back in 1999....
I just traded my money pit 2014 BMW 750LI (that i loved tremendously) for a beautiful pearl white 2018 Lexus GX460 premium. I’m pretty already familiar with the brand as I once owned a 2010 Lexus LS460 which was the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. I was very surprised at how high the GX sits. Feels like the GX is taller than every other vehicle I encountered on the way home today. 90k on the odometer but rides like it just rolled off the assembly line. I’m totally impressed!
Great review...thank you! One issue I can't find an answer for in any review is driver seat comfort as relates to taller drivers. Recognizing people carry their height differently...some in leg length and others in torso. In general, would a 6'4" driver find they have enough leg and head room? Bouncing your head off the ceiling when hitting bumps...or legs cramping up in traffic because your knees are uncomfortably bent can be very unpleasant. In addition to the GX, does anyone know if the LX is any better as far as driver's space? Thank you!
Ernst Heidegger Thank you so much...I really appreciate your help. The fact that you are also the same height gives me greater assurance. If I could also ask, are you happy with your GX? I like the GX and the LX. Trying to decide between a 2015ish GX or 2013ish LX as my daily driver and family car (2 kids and 65# Labrador). Wondering if GX is better size wise in the City (work...parking)...or if it really matters as both considered “oversized”. Same time wondering if LX would provide that much more practical room. Bottom line...between a slightly older LX or slightly newer GX, if you had it to do over...or given my situation described... which would you choose/recommend? Thank you!
I prefer "OLD"....New is not necessarily better in this case... This GX is a tough off road machine as is...Leave it alone, and don't change the core vehicle...Changing all the gadgets and gizmos inside is fine, but please don't change for the sake of "change"
I would never change that engine it's the all proven Tundra engine. It's one of the most durable Toyota engines and as a matter of fact one of the best engines ever made. There is several of them that have reached over a million miles. The torque is actually 330. And just replacing the chip you can actually get close to 400 torque and close to 350 horsepower. Again I would not do that just because the way the engine is set up as to run forever. These cars are expensive but they were last on average three times a regular car.
MJ it’s not the same engine, you are talking about the 5.7l,m that is in the lx570 full-size , the GX uses the the 4.6L from the Lexus LS460 minus the direct injection in the LS.
I wouldn't get one brand new and off-road it. I think it would hurt me to rip up a $50-60k vehicle. I'd get a 2-3 year old low mile off-lease CPO for $35k and mod it. You won't feel so bad the first time you get a few scratches on it. But agreed with everything said, this thing is a sneaky good off-roader. Out of the box it's less capable than a 4Runner and you're gonna have to remove the side skirt and a lift is probably in order. But once you do you'll be smiling from ear to ear knowing you can off-road a luxury vehicle.
Depends what trim you compare it to. The luxury is more capable than the standard 4runner but not the trd pro. With the mods its likely better with the crawl control and more torque and center lock.
By replacing the chip you can easily get 50 hp and torque. And even better milage. I personally would not because this setting is what has proven to work.
“Get you anywhere?” Not with that ridiculous front grille/bumper or whatever the hell that is! They ought to go back to a regular front with a better approach angle like the actual Prado or the previous Gx470
Who cares. I get in it. I drive it. The sound system is fantastic. The infotainment is reliable and easy to use. It has tons of features. Works very well with android. Speech command is very good. I would not change it but there are many after market tablet style replacements.
The GX which is certainly an excellent SUV needs to be upgraded with new infotainment system (Apple/Google car play), power lift gate; and a bi-turbo 3.5 l motor for better fuel consumption.
I think saying this needs more power, is playing into the same camp of people who don't get what it is. The engine's power is more than adequate for what this rig is designed for. The output doesn't stress its engine within an inch of its life like a boosted or highly tuned one would. This adds to reliability. We get the Prado where I'm from and as standard, it has the 2.8 D4D Turbo Diesel engine with 190hp or so. Even with that engine, they're brisk enough for 90% of on-road situations. These are not straight-line monsters, nor do they pretend to be
I test drove it and the power will shock u like I used to think the same way , 301hp only ! But man it jumps , the o my thing stopping me from getting one is a full test drive to see if it matches my driving patterns, I love cornering fast and this one is not made for this !
Why can’t they give us this amazing piece of engineering but with diesel power? If ever there was a machine that’s perfectly suited for a 3.0 L diesel, this is it!
this car has nothing to do with the sequoia. Other countries though this is called the “Land Cruiser Prado” 150 platform. Previous platform is the 120, which shares platforms with the 4Runner and FJ cruiser.
I heard those v8 engines are actually high maintenance and are mechanically complicated. That’s why the RX sells.. it’s a v6 and hence it’s more economical in the long term..
It is? How so? Its the same toyota tundra engine that lasts over 1 million miles. Nonsense. V8 on the sedans are high maintenance because there is no space to work on them.
@@Bada_Boom78 the 470 comes equipped with air suspension along with ride setting from soft comfort and sports, each setting sets the stiffness accordingly
@@Bada_Boom78 it depends on how rough the pavement is, the gx470 is more than capable to handle most rough road conditions, but if you wish to go the extra mile, then getting suspension upgrades, bigger off road tires, winch and all that good stuff.
I have noticed from Toyota/Lexus forums that Lexus will be cancelling the Gs/Gx G-series platform and focus elsewhere. I hope thats not true but the japanese media-post seem to think so.
I had a chance to test drive this and the seats were not that comfortable at least for me. It felt like I was driving a 4 cylinder SUV that was heavy. But besides those two this was a great SUV.
RX350 imo is way more stylish and user-friendly to most folks. Also, RX is cheaper, more fuel efficient, easier to maintain, cheaper to repair, just to name a few benefits over GX460.
No car will last forever, you have to keep up with maintenance. Toyota V8 had it's own share of issues. Search "secondary air injection pump failure", "cracked dash", "failed air suspension", "evaporator core leaking". All common problems on the GX and 4Runner, and extremely expensive to fix.
Secondary air injection can be fixed with a bypass kit for under $400. Air suspension can be converted to coils for under $300 and still rides great. My dash was replaced for free...not really that expensive if you know what you're working with.
and are you saying that to only GX and 4Runner or......atleast they don't have to change there engine or transmission ever month like Mercedes do or BMW. Sure they have those problems , yeah we know no car will last forever, but these issues are only easy to fix are not that expensive unlike BMW fixings.
I own the 2015 Lux version of this Lady. Naw. She's built for comfort. She ain't built for speed. And she's got some mojo in the drivetrain. She can go away and hide from you. More likely, she'll just raise her glass and laugh, though.
I say the Hilux is more bullet proof over the Land Cruiser, Hilux is what keeping the modern armies from wiping out terrorism :D the terrorist know something we don't :D
with all respect, you don't know what you're talking about! I have owned a land cruiser prado! they don't have a V8. they're either 4cyl (gas or diesel) known as GX-R and the 6Cyl as VX-R! Those guys don't have air suspension either, they have spring suspension! AND the comparison to ford raptor was the biggest BS Ive ever heard
8.1 ground clearance and off-road don't go together. This is neither true off-roader or neither a cruiser. I always WTF is this? Forester even has more ground clearance than this wannabe off-roader.
Lol. 8.1 because of grill and running boards. Did you just compare it to a forester? It is a land cruiser prado proven world wide as an excellent off roader. This car is better than the 4runner. Remove running boards and place a front bumper and suddenly its close to 10 inch. Wow. Than u give it a little lift 2 inch and its a beast with all terrain tires. It will eat jeep for breakfast. And you are a troll.
Rxonmymind this suv is a joke because it’s hard to get to the 3rd row? Are you just now hitting puberty and you want to get away from mommy? Sit up front like a big boy and don’t comment stupid shit
@@hipporage18 Whoa. Check yourself. No need for personal attacks and mommy references or people's puberty. Stay on point and make your argument good or bad on the vehicle. I've owned Toyota & Lexus vehicles all my life. Currently have a Lexus RX350 & IS350c. I've researched them extensively and have made many trips to the dealership looking to upgrade my RX 350. My natural inclination will be the GX 460. I don't know your age but keep in mind there is a certain demographic that does not want to climb over second row seats to get to the third nor have our friends or family do so. $60,000 and you want me to climb over a seat to get to another? My family too? A simple fix to this would have been for Lexus to make the second row seats flip up or make captains chairs available so one can go down the center. This is available in the Toyota Sienna and the Toyota Sequoia. For YEARS. So my next choice... let's go look at the Lexus RX 350 XL. That's a joke too. $54,000 one can't even sit in the third row seats. Period. You literally can't pull the second row of seats back to lock it into position. $54k. Keep in mind my wife's IS350 convertible had MORE room in the back seat than that Lexus XL. I fit very comfortable back there. Unbelievable. I don't know who's in charge of Lexus but it seems pretty obvious that the people who make the 460 arer in a different department than those who make the 570 and the Toyota Land Cruiser. I think the same people who made the 460 made the 350 XL three seater. If I had to have a vehicle it would be the Toyota Sequoia as it comes with captains chairs and at 5'10"Ingress and egress was easy to get back to the 3rd row & my knees had ample room in the third row seats while I had about four fingers of headroom. Nice. Unfortunately, that dated center console is about 10 plus years old. I don't need nor do I want the top of the line Lexus or Toyota SUV as the depreciation cost on both suck after 3 years. Have a great rest of the week. Cheers.
Who else likes the idea of a smaller, less expensive Land Cruiser?
it needs a more powerful and efficient engine, as well as apple carplay and android auto...2020 maybe?

Last time I checked.. The GX460 carried a much higher pricetag than the Rx350.
It's not much higher. It within 5-8k of each other
But leasing is different because you pay for depreciation, which the gx lacks
“Get you anywhere?” Not with that ridiculous front grille/bumper or whatever the hell that is! They ought to go back to a regular front with a better approach angle like the actual Prado or the previous Gx470
so does it have lockers front/rear or down hill assist? Would this platform work as a overlanding vehicle?
Center locking and yes it has crawl control. Definitely an overlanding vehicle. I've taken mine places that people were turning back on atv's!
I know the 4runner has a v6 vs this v8, but how would a 4runner limited compare with the ride of this?
The Lexus will be more comfortable still, but a Limited 4Runner is certainly a nice machine
Here's a review of the 4Runner: ua-cam.com/video/PtetH9oxkQU/v-deo.html
Limited would ride better than the TRD Pro we had on the channel
The Hooniverse thanks. Love your content.
They share the same chassis
Not really
very good and independence review
Pretty sure it makes 329 lb ft of torque
Yea but the Escalade won’t last you 3 generations 😂
I still can’t believe the infotainment screen is still from 2012
Blake O the purpose of the suv is off roading, not entertainment lol ..... get an x5 bmw then
Who cares. I get in it. I drive it. The sound system is fantastic. The infotainment is reliable and easy to use. It has tons of features. Works very well with android. Speech command is very good. I would not change it but there are many after market tablet style replacements.
Cars are for driving... the navigation works fine
Dude love your attitude!!
The GX which is certainly an excellent SUV needs to be upgraded with new infotainment system (Apple/Google car play), power lift gate; and a bi-turbo 3.5 l motor for better fuel consumption.
I disagree. Biturbo will not last a million miles.
These are not straight-line monsters, nor do they pretend to be
More power would just make it harder to maintain traction. I never feel like I'm slipping much. Even on rocks and mud
Your torque figure is wrong, it has about 330lb/ft.
my favorite models are 2010 to 2013, this big grill is too much for me
Dream truck
My dad owned a 2010 one it got totaled by two f150s now he has the 2018 and in a year when I'm 15 I'm getting the 2010
I'd buy the base model of this since I don't want that extra bumper or blings.
Might be good offroad but only 0.000001% will ever take one offroad.
Sad but true
So true
Not yet i want it to build up milage first. Lol
This thing is not a baby land cruiser, it's the more successful and sophisticated younger brother of the sequoia.
this car has nothing to do with the sequoia. Other countries though this is called the “Land Cruiser Prado” 150 platform. Previous platform is the 120, which shares platforms with the 4Runner and FJ cruiser.
Its the best car.
Or save about $50,000 and buy an LX470.
I have a 470. Besides the dated technology, I would recommend it....
Aidan Wallington me too... but I’m thinking of doing a 2 inch lift with 35s
buff samurai fred I want to do that sometime but I have other things I need to fix on it first :(
@@aidanwallington9718 yup true that, I've seen ppl swapping in ls3 and supercharging them for more power. They are very capable suvs never the less
Same as 4Runner
I have a problem paying high wages for old tech. I don’t have problem with old tech but- again- paying for it makes zero sense to me
That us why you buy it used. You can easily purchase a 2014 for $30k now.
lol this dude Is funny .....well I love my Lexus es.....I mean my Toyota Camry in a fancy dress......
That rear door though dude, deal breaker.... what a pain
Depends who you are. I love the barn door style over the lift style
RX350 imo is way more stylish and user-friendly to most folks. Also, RX is cheaper, more fuel efficient, easier to maintain, cheaper to repair, just to name a few benefits over GX460.
Any hydraulic will most likely fail in 10 years and I am a one of those guys want to age with car.
That's true. How much do you estimate the cost to replace the hydraulics?
Not this one. But its not that bad at all.
Land Rover LOL!!!!!
That is a Lexus go not a rx
I wish that Lexus would retune these engines. They seem to tune all the vehicles toward longevity and fuel economy.
How mach car
I like this car i want this car plias call my 00971556852767 this whatsApp nambiar
Why he talk so hard…?
Title pisses me off
Same. Have to play the UA-cam game or no one sees the video unfortunately
with all respect, you don't know what you're talking about!
Over-priced Toyota Prado with a V8 engine
Which one do you recommend?
Both are very reliable but for sure Lexus gx as it has v8 engine
I'll rather get a 4runner
This suv is a joke. One has a VERY hard time getting into the third row seats. You have to crawl over the second row to get in.
Rxonmymind this suv is a joke because it’s hard to get to the 3rd row? Are you just now hitting puberty and you want to get away from mommy? Sit up front like a big boy and don’t comment stupid shit
@@hipporage18
Whoa.
Cheers.
Stop your crying rx, the 460 is nice truck and if ur a nit picker you;ll always find a fault with a vehicle
@@rxonmymind8362 then get a mini van
Not a truck
It's actually more of a truck than most new "trucks"
its based off a truck
and can probably handle more than a truck
