It was too advanced. It was way ahead of its time. Mann chilled after this and produced content with broader appeal. But Manhunter was like an early burst of genius that was too much for viewers of the time.
Tom Noonan's performance as a serial killer reminded me of Klaus Kinski's take on Dracula. Both are cripplingly shy and lack the good looks or innate charm to compensate. Very refreshing.
This movie would not have worked without Tom Noonan's brilliantly complex and fathomless creation of the killer - from his hopelessly wounded child-side to his ultra-ruthless delusional alter ego - which was Oscar worthy.....But ahead of it's time.
I used to feel the same way, just got tired of putting it back together over and over. Soon I had parts I really didn't need. Didn't look very good for the trade in thing though.
An incredible movie. Everything about it is sublime. The casting, the soundtrack, the direction by Michael Mann, the photography, the script and its overarching coolness. The best movie of the 80s.
Thief (with James Caan), was the *ish! I took a lot from that movie... Especially... "Lie to no one. If it's someone you love, you'll ruin it with a lie and if they're a stranger, who TF are they that you have to lie to 'em?"
Even though Ralph Feinnes' performance in Red Dragon is tragic and emotional, I prefer Tom Noonan's portrayal in Manhunter because of how subtle the tragedy is. It's not explained through flashbacks or internal thoughts, but rather through his expressions and music cues.
One night in '86 I heard a movie critic characterize the cinematography of a new film as, "brooding photography." That suggestion compelled me to immediately run out and see the Michael Mann directed film, Manhunter. I would return to the theater twice more to share with friends what I felt was an amazing movie. The critic's claim of brooding photography was right on, and I stand firmly upon my assessment that Brian Cox's frightening portrayal of Hannibal Lecter far exceeded Anthony Hopkins' campy adaptation. Years later I found myself standing outside a sound stage tossing a football back and forth with Will Peterson who had starred in Manhunter, and it was with great pleasure that I got the opportunity to sing my praises for this sadly overlooked film. I could tell he truly appreciated it.
Exactly, Manhunter is just more emotionally and visually captivating. There are alot of weird up and down moments watching this movie but you never leave the whole enveloping kind of feeling. You're almost day dreaming while watching this and it adds to the whole experience. Amazing visuals with a perfect music match up. You're right, you just can't forget a movie like this.
Manhunter is my favorite Hannibal Lecter movie. The soundtrack, the cinematography, the colors, the cast, and the storytelling is about as perfect as it can get! It has brilliant examples of both "show, don't tell" and "tell, don't show", which is hard for a movie to do!
This was one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. A few years later after watching Silence of the Lambs I saw where the inspiration came from. Wow!
This song is intrinsincally linked with this movie. I came here because even though I've not seen the movie or heard the song for a long time, I still sing it when im making a cup of tea from time to time. Beautiful production that reeks of the 80's. If you were there, you know.
This is not an easy film to appreciate, thats why i feel instantly bonded with all of you guys in here. Im pretty sure that all of my friends (and even wife) don't "get" it. They (the sheeple) are blind for the outstanding photograhy/visuals and deaf for the breathtaking soundtrack of this masterpiece in American film. I feel pity for them.
G Koster same here.. To me the film feels incomplete for the obvious reasons but in a way it just adds to the mystery and insanity of it all.. God what an incredible movie..
Your right hardly see a good scripted movie anymore that I can forget the time of day like this movie and SOL those two are my favorite thrillers although I must admit first season of true detectives was great for tv show.

This movie is on a different level. There is good acting but all the actors in this movie have made a Brilliant Movie. I guess it is because of Michael Mann's vision. I wish I could thank them all for a Great work of Art.
I watched this film for the first time tonight Tuesday March 11th, 2015. Blown the fuck out. Amazing film and kickass soundtrack. This song made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Now I'm off to find the full OST.
LoneDeer man hunter is a great film. Loved it. I felt as though the 2nd half wasn't as good as the first half but read that they ran out of production money & time.
LoneDeer very envious of you right now, cant imagine what it would be like to watch this for the first time this year, it must be the film equivalent of finding buried gold in your back garden!! Big MANHUNTER fan over here, really liked first 2 series of HANNIBAL too
No i love this movie and in many ways I love it as much as silence but silence of the lambs was a all the planets aligned nothing on that movie should be changed it is the only time a horror/hard thriller has swept the oscars getting a lot of attention to the genre as much as I love Michael mann the interpretation wouldnt have worked ot had to be Jonathan demme needed to be in the directors chair Anthony Hopkins had to be hannibal just all the ingredients needed to be there to make that classic this movie is awesome and I prefer it over red dragon the movie but silence is its own thing and it should stay that way in my opinion of course all due respect I love that other people are giving this movie much due respect
To this day, I still ask: WHY THE HELL DIDN'T THIS FILM CLEAN UP AT THE OSCARS?!! Cox's Lecter was outstanding, Petersen's Graham was awesome... but Noonan's Dolarhyde..? Hell, he WAS Francis Dolarhyde! An epic performance in an equally epic film! (Michael Mann..? You sir, deserved EVERY last award that came out that year! & then some!!)
If you like atmosphere and great backing sounds. This flick is perfect. I feel very underrated. For fuck sake, the tiger scene, along with the Shriekback songs. Michael Mann really delved into his extremity of the Red Dragon novel. But also put it into a 1986 or so scenerrio. Beautifully done. And the Shriekback music.....incredible. Perfect
Back in the day this film was just an extraordinary experience. Seeing it for the first time I remember thinking it shouldn't exist, that it had somehow fallen back to us from the future. Tom Noonan's performance is mesmerising, and as for the music, I'm guessing that's why you looked this up on UA-cam!
Even after all this time this is still the best movie of all time for me the art style and the direction of the movie including the people acting is sheer brilliance. I always come back here to listen to this i find the song so beautiful but i find the movie even more beautiful.
Awesome movie- saw it in 1988. The first of the movies from Thomas Harris' books. It didn't get nearly enough credit, and definitely didn't need a re-make! (Red Dragon)Hannibal Lechter was not the clever, witty, misunderstood evil genius like in "Silence of the Lambs", but a stone-cold prick. Michael Mann directed this gem, while Jonathan Demme directed "Silence. and Ridley Scott did "Hannibal"" If you ask me, Mann should have done all three!
While Silence of the Lambs is clearly the superior film, Manhunter is a very close second. But one thing of note though, why does everyone speak more of Hannibal's character and not of the actual main antagonist in both these films, Francis? Lector has very brief appearances in both of them films yet the bulk of the conversation is about him.
I can understand why most think 'Silence' is a 'better' film( it is in many ways)- although I prefer Manhunter ( one thing I don't like about Silence' is Hopkins dreadfully hammy performance). Ted Levine (Jame Gumb) like Tom Noonan (Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter) are both excellent I think...
The Original 'Red Dragon'/Hannible.. Awesome movie! Cinematography! Soundtrack! You Can't Touch This! Godspeed!!! This vid cut short though ;)..... Grr......
Filmed in Atlanta. The elevator scene is from the Mariott Marquis. The building used in the scene where Will visits Hannibal is the High Museum of Art. Why does Mann choose so many white interiors? The Leeds bedroom, the Jacoby bedroom, Chilton's office, the tiger room, the room where Will realizes Dollarhyde saw the films.
Great question, that. In terms of visual syntax, the argument could be made that both Will and Francis are dreamers; the "real" world that they're forced to work and live in has little color for them, and it's only when they're alone or with the people that they've let inside that the palette shifts to include sunsets, sunrises, ambient tones and "personal" tones.
I'm a huge fan of Manhunter. It's the best of the films but the television series Hannibal is the best rendition of the Hannibal Lecter-Will Graham story line, IMO.
The Hannibal tv show turns a canon family man/work-obsessed professional who communicates effectively with everyone into a loner who is literally dealing with a fractured mind from episode 1 and can barely interact with anyone without nearly crying. The TV show is terrible and disrespectful to all its characters.
This film is so cleverly thought out and constructed. It flips the usual notion of light is good and dark is evil on its head. All to echo the central theme of the story which is shown when Lecter talks about the power of god and if you repeat the actions, i.e. kill, you can attain the same power as god. Lecter is shown in white in a white room, the murder happens in a totally white room and it's carried through to this scene. He sits in the van in the dark but the light crosses his face and as he gets more incensed and sees them bathed in light he literally reaches out into light, tearing away at the dark. The house is first shown half in light and half in dark but later the angle is much closer so now most of the house is in light and it ends with the forever changed Tooth Fairy bathed in light bringing it with him into the dark. The pivotal scene where Will confronts the killer he has to cross from the dark outside into the light where the killer waits for him and the show down happens in the white kitchen with Will protected by wearing black and being in the dark.
@chattycathydoll *smiles* Dude that was damn deep distribution of what I see in "Manhunter" as one of those rare movies of that genres in the 80s. You made my day with what your wrote! Your awesome! This movie rocks no question!👍😎
Graham: And you know you need a bolt-cutter and every other Goddamn thing. Because everything with you is seeing, isn't it? Your primary sensory intake that makes your dream live is seeing. Reflections. Mirrors. Images. .... You've seen these films! Haven't you, my man? One of he Best scenes in this movie!
Yup. It's the best of the Thomas Harris adaptations, mainly due to the power of Michael Mann's visceral direction. Over half the time if you ask me Silence or Manhunter, I will pronounce Manhunter as the best. Will is Ahab. I get his fixation. Clarice is a survivor, but an opportunist as well. Will wants an unobtainable absolution he can never have, but it comes from a righteous place.
+TheWickerMan1981 unbelievably well put, spoken like someone who knows his Hannibal. I respect that. Also, bomb ass profile pic. I got to see Tenenbaums on the big screen a couple weeks ago at my local art house, still one of the true modern classics.
Silence of the lambs and red dragon are the pure horror thriller films. I consider Manhunter to be an ultra realistic crime drama thriller. A lots of films tried to imitate Silence of the lambs and red dragon. But, i've never seen a single film that tried and succeeded imitating Manhunter. Manhunter is that unique film. It's a pity that Manhunter was panned by the critics. I think Manhunter is one of the most important crime thriller films in American film history.
It's still hard for me to believe that this film was not well-received by critics nor the general population when it was released in theaters.
Proof if any were needed that people are total fucking morons.
How many people like their coffee black hmm?
It was too advanced. It was way ahead of its time. Mann chilled after this and produced content with broader appeal. But Manhunter was like an early burst of genius that was too much for viewers of the time.
Agreed
Siskel and Ebert said in was in the Top Ten of the year.
Tom Noonan OWNED that role! He is a Legend!
Tom Noonan's performance as a serial killer reminded me of Klaus Kinski's take on Dracula. Both are cripplingly shy and lack the good looks or innate charm to compensate. Very refreshing.
This film and its soundtrack and score is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Michael Mann is a genius.

One of the best from the 80s🖤
God I love Manhunter. Micheal Manns unique and original style of filmmaking is astonishing.

The same way he did MIAMI VICE!

Manhunter was one of the things that made the 80's great.

Chilling.
Very chilling! Thats why I now own dogs like Presa Canario's! Fearless!
Chilling and sad at the same time, I loved Francis, not with the red dragon just him
Everytime I hear this I feel compelled to tear apart my car dashboard.

One of many great movies by Michel Mann.
Yes.
Micheal Mann's masterpiece! I have watched it 20+ times.
Tom Noonan played a spectacular villain which made this movie so great.
He sure did! He was freaking scary.
Even though Ralph Feinnes' performance in Red Dragon is tragic and emotional, I prefer Tom Noonan's portrayal in Manhunter because of how subtle the tragedy is. It's not explained through flashbacks or internal thoughts, but rather through his expressions and music cues.
One of the best 80s movie (so stylish and visually stunning, great cast and acting....)
Can't remember a serial killer being portrayed with this much pathos before. Brilliant in every way.

Very 1980s , cult classic !! They don't make them like that anymore .

Another favorite line!
Graham: And you know you need a bolt-cutter and every other Goddamn thing. Because everything with you is seeing, isn't it? Your primary sensory intake that makes your dream live is seeing. Reflections. Mirrors. Images. .... You've seen these films! Haven't you, my man?
One of he Best scenes in this movie!
cuteblanca epic
It's an oh shit moment. The moment you knew Graham had him.
You know thats the leeds dog and the jocboies cat .....
"Doggie doesn't have a collar,but..........."
"Dream much, Will?"
This film is a cult classic, dont tell anyone its our little secret.
Exactly. We'll let the public keep Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, we can have Manhunter.
It's hard not to though.
Favorite movie ✌
