Then, when The Silence of the Lambs was being made, they offered Cox the chance to reprise the role; however, he was busy on the stage in England, so they cast Hopkins. And here's the wild part: It was the same play, at the same theatre, both times.

I am so weak for the fact that Will Graham is so emotionally intelligent and well-spoken. He is the parent every child deserves and the spouse every adult deserves. Emotional intelligence is such an underrated trait, and hope we as a civilization can normalize it a lot more, especially for men. Let men have emotions beyond anger and bitterness!
One of the most famous lines in Silence of the Lambs (as shown here), is a mis-quote of the book and a joke, the real line is 'I ate his liver with fava beans and a big Amarone.' Firstly Amarone is thought to have been less well known as a wine, also it goes with liver whereas Chianti does not typically, secondly it is a medical joke, Lecter the medicine he would have likely been on MOAI's, three things you can't be on are, liver, beans, but especially alcohol, so he is telling Clarise he's not on his meds.
I’m glad James called out the scene right after Graham meets with Lecktor and runs back and forth down the stairs. The first time I saw the film I fell in love with that shot and it’s always the first thing I think of when I hear this film mentioned. I’m not even sure why it spoke to me so much, but it’s a fantastic scene.
There's just something about the way he's that only pop of color in that sterile white environment running back and forth that really captures the sense of panic. I love this movie so much, it's definitely my personal favourite of the franchise.
This Kill Count got me excited for the Hannibal Lecter franchise. Much thanks to the Dead Meat for covering classics like this with new releases on a weekly basis.
24:59 THEY BROUGHT IT BACK!!! Finally. I missed these kill count trailers. Thank u Dead Meat crew. Also love the videos you guys make. I love the Kill counts and it helps me get through the week of school knowing I have something to look forward to.
Truly the underrated film of the bunch. Michael Mann’s direction is sublime, the cast is quite wonderful & that gritty realism that Mann is so well known for works perfectly for his take on the material. More people should check it out (thankfully it’s gotten more appreciation over the decades) even though “Silence of the Lambs” will always be my favorite in the series; first one of the films I ever saw so a bit unfair sure but it’s one of the best thrillers especially in the ‘90s
I had no idea Manhunter even existed. Silence of the Lambs was my dad’s Saturday morning movie of choice, and Red Dragon was the first movie I ever bootlegged because I was too young to rent or buy a rated R film. I absolutely understand not covering the TV series, but it’s hands-down the best part of the franchise.
@@Traumerei- I agree. I don't know how they ever thought it was a good idea that Will falls in love with Lecter. It was fan service, how could Will fall in love with what he dispises
@@Foundlilly11 agreed. Really had an issue with that plot development. Felt like those fetishy fanfics. Feels so against Wills character in the books. Also bizarre considering Hannibal actively frames him in the TV show and ruins his life.
Thank you, James. I really appreciate the reference to actual clinical terms (like the DSM) in the beginning, and how you don’t linger on trying to specify Hannibal’s condition. ASPD and similar conditions are highly stigmatized, and ‘movie psycopathy’ is a huge reason for that.
Call me nuts, but tell me that he’d have been perfect for a DC role? I could totally see him as someone like Two-Face. Showing two types of personalities where he realizes what he’s getting himself involved with, but the other personality showing pleasure in it.
Tom Noonan KILLED IT as Francis Dolarhyde. William L. Petersen (Will Graham) is amazing aswell. I’m so excited to see you tackle the Hannibal Lecter Mythos.
A few months ago I met Brian Cox at work (he was doing a show at the Bath Theatre Royal) I didn’t get to serve him but he was being served on the till next to me and I got to speak to him. I was literally so shocked that Logan Roy was stood in front of me that I just kept laughing at him jokes and only managed to squeak out a “Have a nice day.” To him and his wife. He was so lovely though and my co-worker (who didn’t know who he was) was shocked at how nice Brian was after I showed them some clips of him in Succession lmao.
13:02 one thing that all of versions of the Tooth Fairy fail to live up to book is how ripped he is. Dude was described as being the level of a regional champion power lifter.
One of the things I love about Brian Cox's portrayal of Lecter is that he's closer to a genuine psychopath, even if that isn't exactly a proper diagnosis anymore. The part that sticks out to me is when he perks up with genuine interest when Will says he read Lecter's (or "Lecktor's") article in a psychiatric journal. It demonstrates Lecter's inner vanity, his narcissism that most psychopathic or antisocial individuals display. They want to hear about themselves, know about themselves, be acknowledged by those around them, especially if it's for something that they feel deserves recognition and positive feedback. As soon as Will tries to take the focus off of Lecter himself and back to the case, Lecter becomes bored and begins toying with Will, always trying to get the focus back on him. I don't think this is so much as an obsession with Will in particular but the inner narcissism of a serial killer coming out in force now that he has someone to talk to again. Brilliant performance by Cox.
Cool Tidbit: The Hotel used for Graham's stay in Atlanta is the Marriott Marquis, also seen in Loki and the Hunger games Mockingjay as well as Ms Marvel. The High Art Museum was used for the Killmonger art heist in Black Panther
Here's hoping a James covered franchise helps bring viewership up. These scripts, sponsor segments, editing, etc are some of the finest ever put out on this channel.
I love seeing others appreciate Manhunter and for the same or similar reasons as me. I’m glad it has gotten the love and respect it deserves in the years since it’s release. Cox made seeing someone talk on the phone interesting.
For those new to the Hannibal franchise and the Kill Count, I suggest you prepare for Hannibal 2001. That movie's main antagonist is deplorable, some might even say more than Dr. Lector himself
I totally forgot that the killer in this film is played by the same dude who played Sammy, or Caden’s stalker, in Synecdoche, New York which is my second favorite film ever made.
My 80s video store co-workers and I were obsessed with this movie! You're right about the sound mix-- you can just listen to the audio and discover lots of new details/dialogue. I think Cox was just as creepy as Hopkins. "Would you like to leave me your home number?"
The Hannibal show is by far my favorite piece of this universe and one of my favorite shows in general. Maybe you could cover it in a podcast episode or something
I agree. I also think Mikkelson’s portrayal is probably my favorite. Seeing him function as an actual psychiatrist was a great decision, and I honestly don’t think I can see the other versions pull it off as well. I’m bummed he won’t cover it because it’s great material. Show is so unbelievably nasty at times.
Dennis Farina has been a personal favorite since I saw him play Jimmy Cerano in Midnight Run back in the 80's. The guy just had THE BEST delivery of those lines. There's a scene were he threatens to kill one of his underlings with a pencil and I'll never forget that. I say that line often still to this day (as a gag, obviously. I don't threaten people in real life).
This has always been my favorite verison of Will Graham even including the original version in the book. Will in other interpretations play as a follower of Crawford but here Peterson plays Will as someone who isn't afraid to get in someones face. That exchange between WIll and Crawford right before Will figure out how the killer is picking his victims is AMAZING! Crawford tell him its too late and Will snapping back about Crawford manipulating him with the photos to the look on Farina's Crawford face when the second label is pulled off. To this day I can't tell if Crawford is amazed by Will's brilliance or disturbed by Will's imagination in that moment. Favorite scene in the entire series.
Adore this film, Michael Mann’s style just suits the mythos of Red Dragon perfectly. Visually perfect and one of my favourite soundtracks ever. Really needs way more appreciation than it has.
For me - Brian Cox's Hannibal is the representation of evil, and Hopkins' Hannibal is the representation of manipulation. Either perfomances are impressive and keeps us at the edge of the seats.
Love how William Petersen’s characters in both this and To live and die in L.A. are involved with law enforcement, but MAN they could not be more different
@@wallcity318 it sadly only 3 seasons before being cancelled (got shoved in a bad late night time slot back in the network tv days). But all 3 seasons are fantastic, and they managed to wrap it up well
Mine too. While James says Hopkins hams it up in the first one, I’d politely disagree. He’s a caged tiger for most of the film and you can see the wheels clicking in his head trying to get into Clarice’s head, the way he aggravates Chilton and ultimately the famous escape from the cage after Clarice’s final visit and confession. He’s definitely sillier once you get to “Hannibal” and most of “Red Dragon” although he does kinda try in the latter film to be less goofy but Brett Ratner’s direction doesn’t always help with that and some of the writing too
Honestly this movie is GREAT. I love Silence of the Lambs a lot, it's one of my favorite horror movies ever, but this one is also fantastic and should be given more praise omg
9:53 while I know it would be a lot of work, I would like to see you cover some if not all of the NBC hannibal series. Mads Mikelsen's version of Hannibal is similar to Bryan Cox's version but taken to a pretty horrific level. Acting almost like a perfect human being but hiding such a disturbing/dangerous monster, his version of Hannibal has surpassed even Hopkin's in my mind due to the show.
Can't help but notice that James states this movie is as "pulpy as the orange juice [he] buy[s]", and yet in Drunk Star Wars: THE PHANTOM MENACE (Episode I) he says that he hates pulp- it's rough and coarse and gets everywhere (18:01). So what's the truth?
Seeing the video get almost 100k views in 2 hours makes me really happy for james and the whole crew. i hope all of the videos can thrive and get even more recognition i know its usually 15-25 minute videos but i cant even imagine the amount of manpower needed just for editing these thats not even talking about the writing, or having to actually and everything in between it really is kickass and insanely inmpressive to me. god i love you dead meat
I'm so glad that you covered this movie. It is still so underappreciated, considering nearly every crime-drama has been inspired by it, and you could say that it was the birth of Gil Grissom before CSI became a thing. Personally I think Cox's performance is the better version, because as you remarked, it is a lot more realistic and believable, which actually makes it much scarier. I still rate this movie extremely high on my list and it is great to see it getting the recognition it deserves.
Manhunter is one of my favorite 'hidden' gems! The whole series is one of my favorites and love that James and team are able to cover it! Love the new logo and so happy to see the trailers are back. Can't wait for next week!

Michael Mann always uses pop music very well in his work. The sequence with "strong as i am" is great, and so is the scene with "in a gadda da vida".
SOTL is basically a perfect film.
He never ruled the show out entirely, maybe he’ll do it one dy
The show started off good but went off the rails in season 2 and was absolute unwatchable garbage by season 3.
An underappreciated aspect of this movie is William Petersen's absolutely perfect stubble.
Call me nuts, but tell me that he’d have been perfect for a DC role? I could totally see him as someone like Two-Face. Showing two types of personalities where he realizes what he’s getting himself involved with, but the other personality showing pleasure in it.
Ah, Brian Cox. From Hannibal, to McDonalds ads, to angry old man. What a range.
Tom Noonan KILLED IT as Francis Dolarhyde. William L. Petersen (Will Graham) is amazing aswell. I’m so excited to see you tackle the Hannibal Lecter Mythos.
I actually met him he was very nice to me
As a little kid, I confused or conflated Tom Noonan and Spaulding Grey. I thought they were the same person.
Dude was described as being the level of a regional champion power lifter.
powerlifter physiques aren’t ripped. they’re BIG. Functionally big! Which makes your fact even scarier
I mean after the sex scene we see him shirtless and he seems pretty in shape to me
brian cox being in the movie manhunter and also being in the videogame manhunt is just awesome, i cant unhear starkweather when lector talks lol
I love the new style of videos. The pace is great and learning how their made is really what the kill count has always been for me.
It made me so happy to hear "On the next Kill Count" after those next time trailers have been absent for what feels like a year.
Leprechaun in the Hood, Terror Train, and Tammy and the T-Rex is a very prestigious group to be joining.
As someone who lives near Atlanta and LOVES visiting the High, it always floors me that that one scene was filmed there!
I got so excited when I recognized it!
I love seeing others appreciate Manhunter and for the same or similar reasons as me. I’m glad it has gotten the love and respect it deserves in the years since it’s release. Cox made seeing someone talk on the phone interesting.
"Manhunter"(1986) is an excellent crime mystery thriller movie! This movie has a very strong Direction, creepy atmosphere, and an amazing Soundtrack!
No bloody way!? This week its Manhunter? Yes James!
I think he meant that he wouldn’t cover it along with the rest of the franchise, maybe he’ll do it if it becomes a popular enough request
Thanks! Glad this got to get made.
I love this one. It was awesome. It has Shriekback on the soundtrack.
For those that don't know, Hannibal's actor Brian Cox also voiced Dark Yabu, the villain of the video game "Vexx."
The scene with Inagaddadavida was beast. good job on a great film.
6:50 I'll never see a man get thrown into a windshield again without thinking about the Jack Perry CM Punk REAL GLASS incident
Either perfomances are impressive and keeps us at the edge of the seats.
manhunter is basically gil grissom's in his early years before going to las vegas to become a full time crime scene investigator
Love how William Petersen’s characters in both this and To live and die in L.A. are involved with law enforcement, but MAN they could not be more different
Madds Mikkelson is my favorite version of Hannibal. That series is perfection.
Any bad seasons?
@@wallcity318 it sadly only 3 seasons before being cancelled (got shoved in a bad late night time slot back in the network tv days). But all 3 seasons are fantastic, and they managed to wrap it up well
"You're my big ugly Alice! So go on, follow the white rabbit." I love Brian Cox!
The hills have eyes would be awesome too!
Long overdo I feel
If you want James to see requests send a email to him, he said he doesn’t take requests from comments and hills have eyes kill count would be awesome.
@@henrywooder I know I’ve used the email link for multiple movies now!
@@Nataliehamilton17im positive that Hills have eyes will be a kill count soon, same with silent hill
I love how he laughs when he says “an 8 minute cutdown version” talking about Iron Butterfly
I can't wait for next week! Silence of the Lambs is one of my favorite movies!
He’s definitely sillier once you get to “Hannibal” and most of “Red Dragon” although he does kinda try in the latter film to be less goofy but Brett Ratner’s direction doesn’t always help with that and some of the writing too
20:22 Wow, I didn’t realize Spinotti was the cinematographer for “Munhunter” and “Red Dragon.” He worked with both Hannibals.
Haha @2:12 "Good PO-lice" The Wire was such an awesome show.
Honestly this movie is GREAT. I love Silence of the Lambs a lot, it's one of my favorite horror movies ever, but this one is also fantastic and should be given more praise omg
YES KILL COUNT TRAILERS ARE BACKKKK
Ikr
Doing a series like this gives some old school Dead Meat vibes and I’m all for it! Love it and excited for the upcoming counts!
It's been so long since we got a "on the next kill count" bit. I'm Happy😊
Watched Manhunter for the first tonight. I wished Brian Cox had more scenes, he was spellbinding, and I may have preferred his portrayal.
Jailer: Shenanigans?
Hannibal: 😡
"The next guy that says shenanigans is gonna get his liver eaten out."
YYOOOO, that new Dead Meat logo is sick!! Love the subtle change yet still honoring the predecessor!
0:38 So THAT'S why we're never getting a Scream (TV series) kill count!
Woah! Silence of the Lambs next week! This is gonna be good
I think Brian Cox does the perfect portrayal of that character. Makes it make sense how Hannibal Lecktor made it so far along in society prior to getting caught.
Omg finally, the Hannibal series
At long last & worth the wait
I’m so happy Dr Hannibal is finally on the count! He’s my favorite horror villain ever ❤ such good stories and even sicker makeup! ❤
I friggin love this movie. It is so good and so criminally overlooked. Thank you so much for covering it. :)
Honestly really love the thumbnail on this one. Gave a somewhat mid-looking villain a whole new layer of creepy with that hellish lighting.
James, you have the best team of people! You do an amazing job in front of the camera and ofc all the behind the scenes stuff you do too. It's obvious that you have a great support staff as well. I thoroughly enjoy every episode beginning to end. Including the ads...Well done to whoever writes the scripts for the sponsor ads. They are always creative unique cute and funny. It makes them enjoyable to watch whether or not it's a product that I would use/need for myself or not. Thats why they are the only ones I actually watch without fast forwarding over. I think it important to give props to the support team. To run a channel this large this well, it takes an amazing 👏 team. Good job!! 😊
Trivia: The Tooth Fairy was killed by a Charter Arms Bulldog 44 Special revolver loaded with Glaser Safety Slugs.
Damn, the specificity of that knowledge is actually pretty impressive. Thanks for sharing!
James looks snazzy as hell
Miami Vice vibes which makes sense considering this video.
Lookin like he hit up Dan Flash's
This is great! Excited for the rest of the Hannibal Kill Counts!!!!
Hey nice to see the return of Kill Count trailers, they do a great job of hyping up the next week's movie and I've been missing them. Looking forwards to the rest of the Hannibal series
I've never found any UA-camr, ever, that does better sponsored content than James. I always watch it because he's so creative and always makes it engaging, even though i usually hate sponsored content. Nice work, James!
No ones's talking about the return of "The Next Kill Count", it finally returned after a year.
I AM SO STOKED and THANKFUL!! Thank you, in advance, James, for covering my ALL-TIME favorite movie: The Silence of the Lambs next Friday on my 50th Birthday (3/15/24.) What an amazing coincidence you are doing this that day, almost like you're giving me the best birthday present ever. :) That said, great job with Manhunter and all other kill counts. You are truly my favorite UA-cam channel. :) And give Tim a raise, I love his writing. He needs more credit and screen time during your episodes/ads. :) Thanks for all you and your lovely wife (and staff) do, James.
This film’s soundtrack is amazing. My personal favorite was “Heartbeat”. That was on constant rotation for months after watching this film.
For me it was _Coelecanth_ by Shrieckback. I still have the original vinyl that my father bought when it was released.
It’s gotta be Evaporation for me
James, I want you to know that I'm an aspiring filmmaker, and everyday I wait for the day I get to hear "The movie begins..." over a clip of my movie.
The horror-specific equivalent of imagining yourself being famous on Hot Ones.
The new logo in the corner is sick props to the designer
James, your love for this film may made us even better invisible pals. Silence of the Lambs changed my life but Manhunter is just…so special.
That was an incredible award show you guys have
Think my favorite use of "In the Garden of Eden" was from Mafia 3. Imagine, you are in a 60s night club with Manson Family like group, and they are after you. As you shoot your way out of that night club, that song plays in the background.
Had no idea Hannibal lecters first appearance predates “Silence of the Lambs”
We need more movies like manhunter this movie is like the detective portions in spiral and in saw in general peak entertainment
