- Game Theory uploaded a video about Persona 4 and people wouldnt stop bothering me about it so here's a video about why the 'theory' doesnt hold up and relies pretty much entirely on supplementary/completely made up evidence. He's also weirdly rude and seems unwilling to make the theory in the first place.

I'm sorry. I screwed up with this one. In a few facts and details, certainly, but also in ways that I didn't expect when writing it. And I don't want things to be taken the wrong way, so please, let me clarify:
First, the intro was not intended to make fun of or belittle the fanbase of Persona in any way, and I'm sorry if it came across as mean spirited. Being protective of a franchise isn't a bad thing. I know from doing episodes on franchises like Dark Souls that there are just fanbases who are more amenable to theorizing than others and by choosing this episode, no matter what I would say, it would make some people angry (even if the facts had all been straight, which again, some weren't). I wrote that intro trying to play up the joke that it was a video no one would like, and in the process, I created a self-fulfilling prophesy that offended people and I'm sorry about that. It's never my intent to offend people. Maybe poke fun of in a joking way or call out for bad behavior (some other UA-camrs), but it's never my goal to offend a group of people for liking what they like -- I'm sorry if it came off that way.
Second, I clearly didn't go deep enough or understand everything as clearly as I thought I did. As with the Phoenix Wright episode (another misjudgment on my part), I thought this game would function well-enough as a stand-alone title, but clearly there were added details in other games as well as supplemental content that I just didn't take into consideration. There were a few facts in this one that I either forgot to double check because I assumed I knew them off the top of my head (Elizabeth) or I could have explained better (Izanami). Again, I should have gone deeper, but time constraints and thinking I had covered all the necessary ground made me stop looking when clearly I should have kept digging.
Third, sorry for being defensive. My life this past weekend was incredibly stressful and sad, so having a video receive a heavy backlash in the middle of it all was the last thing I needed, which resulted in me losing my head. Please remember that I receive hundreds of comments every day telling me how awful I am as a person and how I should die because I said X about Y character and that 99% of the time I let it run off me, but sometimes it just gets to you. This weekend was one of those times, so I ask you to forgive that brief saltiness.
And lastly, regarding how I handle criticism, I want you to know that I'm listening. All the time. I read the comments, and yes, I don't respond a lot because when I have in the past, people have taken my responses the wrong way. Instead, I take your comments to heart and try to adjust the programming and scripts on the channel accordingly. Heck, this whole episode was in an effort to try and address some people who were tired of hearing about the same franchises over and over again.
It's a bit of a Catch-22. My policy always was "Read the criticism and make changes to the series based on the feedback, but never directly call it out." That only prompted a lot of backlash of people saying "He doesn't acknowledge criticism." So, I've tried addressing negativity in a public way, but people criticized me for doing that too saying I was "bad at taking criticism" because I did that. It often feels like a lose-lose situation.
Just know that I'm not writing this to be defensive, but to sincerely apologize for the mistakes in this video, the lack of clarity in some of the jokes, and to promise you that I will continue to work at getting better about all these issues. - MatPat

Shocked that you didn't bring up the fact that one's Shadow and their Persona are the exact same being and that, as a result of Yu's Persona existing, his Shadow can't exist at the same time.

Xxoverlord xX actually in this case there's no contradiction, with Izanagi awakening Yu's shadow is effectively Izanagi (as seen in episode 26 of the persona 4 anime) we also know this in the game persona 4 since every time a shadow is tamed it became a persona

What Yu feared the most was him being all alone again. It happened after Izanami presented to him (in the anime) a perfect reality of him being with his friends to which Margaret somewhat snaps him out of however he’s not ready to accept it, thus with the Social Links he has built protecting him against Margaret until he regains his sense of self and reawakens to Izanagi and this could also be understood as a further understanding and him awakening to Izanagi-no-Okami.

I just realized something about this. Persona 4 is the perfect game for him to make a theory on for all the wrong reasons. His videos are usually full of misinformation, and people buy into it. Persona 4 is about finding the truth.

The Velvet Room is the boundary between the Sea of Souls and the Real World/Cognitive Reality. That's why Igor used to introduce himself as "Philemon's servant", as Philemon is the embodiment of the collective unconscious/Sea of Souls. So Yaldabaoth forcing himself into the Velvet Room means he's a shadow that became so powerful and "shared" by so many humans that it became a "God" (albeit a false one), powerful enough to be self conscious and act o its own, therefore being able to affect the real world even if ever so slightly at first.
So Teddie being in the Velvet Room is no surprise really as it is in that point of the game that he ascends to become fully and completely human, thus making some some of "passing" from the "shadow realm" to the "surface" (real world) through the Velvet Room.
Aigis' case is even more impressive. Her Persona was the result of having an artificial heart created with a Plume of Dusk, but she used it before becoming completely human, so she operated just like Teddie before being 100% human, as a shadow with a mask. Then she becomes human by the end of P3 and then after Minato's death she negates her humanity, tearing herself apart. At that moment one half of her became a shadow, Metis, which somehow retained the Plume of Dusk power and made herself able to summon a Persona of her own, and the other half which, despite everything, couldn't fully let go of being human and awakened to the potential of the Wild Card. So there we have it - a human with a Persona that also have a shadow that can summon a Persona too.
In my opinion, those who awaken to the Wild Card have a very strong connection to the Sea of Souls which comes from a childhood where they just can't feel connected to the real world so they fluctuate between "dream and reality".
Well, this all speculation tho, to be honest.
But at least it makes some sense, I guess.

Well this is good BUT Yaldabaoth is actually closer to philemon himself than a shadow. Yaldaboath as well as Erebus are creations of the wild collective conscious due to their desire for one specific thing becoming so strong the collective conscious created an entire entity to fulfill their desire. Erebus for death and Yaldabaoth for a god, to be controlled. So if Yaldaboath were a shadow and Philemon is the collective conscious then Yaldabaoth would be Philemons shadow which doesnt work so Yaldabaoth has to be a different entity entirely.
An interesting addition to this is that Aigis loses the ability to summon her own Persona - depending on your Social Link with her in The Journey, either Athena or Paladian - when this happens, meaning her "true" Persona is lost in the creation of Metis, her Shadow, driving home the idea that Shadow and Persona are one in the same. Metis is Athena/Paladian, but can summon a Persona of her own due to retaining Aigis' built-in ability to do so. That's really interesting actually.

Loved when his entire Metroid fusion theory was based around false information, or the assumption that the game never explained a specific event (which it did, it's a very obvious dialogue that you can't miss unless you're skipping the story). I like watching game theory's videos, but people really need to stop with this bullshit argument of "bro, it's just a theory", a theory isn't an excuse to not knowing the bare minimum about a series, the whole point of a theory is gather the information you have in order to fill the gaps of something, you can't pull shit out of your ass and expect people not to dislike it.

He had a pinned comment up for 5 minutes attacking anyone who brought up the other games, the anime, Izanami, his getting the name wrong, what the Velvet Room is, among other things. He attacked the canon and stated, more or less, how he is above criticism. An ego trap.

I just wanted to point out that the protagonist isn't really the 'odd man' because he doesn't have a shadow because he does have one. It's explained in the games that one person's shadow and their Persona are different manifestations of one and the same thing. Because the protagonist knew of his inner shortcomings and accepted them right from the get go, he didn't have to face his shadow because it already was in the form of a Persona. :)

It feels like he looks up and skims p4 on a wiki or something. Its a weird feeling to be way more of the subject matter expert than the video theory maker.
I've never played the games, but I've actually read through the wiki because I found Persona so interesting. Even then, I could tell there was something off about his theory.
Yeah I never played the game, but watched a playthrough and already felt the theory was a bit off. It's like there were a lot more factual errors than usual.
Josh d he seems to skim the surface for a lot of his theories often ignoring other parts of a franchise to make his theory seem right.
He only looks for info to make up a theory without looking at refuting evidence. This was very apparent to me when he did his Ace Attorney theory way back, and I've stopped watching him since then. It became obvious to me that he makes his theories without any passion for the franchise or enough respect to the fans of those franchises to do a proper in depth theory.
With almost 10M suscribers, i found this really unfortunate.

I like to go back to this video sometimes and every time I find another thing wrong with the theory.
This time for example I noticed that he said that Teddy has traits that Yu has to obtain and that his shadow would have them because Yu doesn't have them. This to me implies that a shadow has what a person lacks, wich is wrong because a shadow is suppressed traits. Not lacking traits because the shadow is the same as the person in a way.

A shadow isn't *just* what you wanna say but can't. It's what you wanna say but yelled out loud. Like, the man presumably wouldn't wanna be naked surrounded by burly men in front of his friends, but his shadow sure seems to be having the time of its life.
This is just something that feeds so much into the misrepresentation of persona 4. Your shadow is your true self qualitatively, NOT quantitatively. The whole point is marying your ego (your conscious self) with your id (your shadow) and your superego (the persona) to be a whole version of yourself.

Nekotori P4U and P4AU happen a about month or two after P4 ends. I don't think it's enough time for Investigation Team's personas to become weaker. The game even happens before the Golden epilogue.
Sem Nikitin P4U is about a month and a half after the final boss of P4. Interestingly, The Answer is exactly two months after the final boss of P3, and although the personas did get weaker (with being out of practice being the handwave-y explanation), they didn’t devolve. We could hunt for some reason that the P3 group lasted longer, or we could just ignore the inconsistencies because honestly the specifics don’t matter lol

Here's an inconsistency that I don't think anybody has pointed out yet: Considering that Teddie said that he detected the presence of people(plural) being thrown in after the events with Saki Konishi. Meaning that before Yu even arrived in Inaba, when Mayumi Yamano was presumably killed, Teddie sensed her presence in the TV world BEFORE Yu enters the TV for the first time. I had a feeling that a Persona(or SMT) theory from MatPat would get a bit messy, but after hearing information from somebody with more exposure and experience with said series, I wasn't sure how messy it would get. If there was more research and fact checking, it wouldn't have been as bad as it was imo. I didn't expect him to be all knowledgeable about the Persona or SMT series so there were some things he said that I let slide out of giving him the benefit of the doubt. I personally enjoy some videos from MatPat, I just wish he would be more accepting of criticism and admitting where he was wrong and improving in the future.
I used to like MatPat a lot, but this was just too much of a 'jumping the bandwagon on something that's popular'. I would be okay with him not playing the game or not knowing much about the series if he took a bit more time to recheck his facts. It can be construed in a lot of different ways. Yu's a big city boi who is both simulatenously under his depth and out of his depth.
Another thing. Part of Mat's evidence comes from the fact that Teddie is the only one who shows up if you don't do any social links. But isn't the all social links route the canon ending? If so, his claim is wrong. It's his experience with all of the social links that turns his persona into the world arcana. That's how The Fool's Journey works. (Sorry for the re-post from the old video, but I think this is interesting). Just to clarify, in The Fool's Journey, the Fool must go through all of the arcana to become the World. So Mat's claim that Teddie is what made Yu the World is also completely wrong.

You can even disprove this point he made the other way around - gameplay-wise Teddy is the only (single person) story social link, and if there wasn't a link like that, you coldn't get the true ending unless you maxed one of the other (technically optional) ones. So you could say that putting Teddy there was a way to let the player choose what they wanted to do with their free time as well.

The fact that Yu actually has his persona already completely debunks the Teddie is Yu's shadow theory to begin with. lol. Besides the fact that shadows have golden eyes and are actively hostile towards the person they are supposed to be a part of. Like a big theme of shadows is that its a piece of yourself that you are actively rejecting. When you accept your shadow it transforms into a persona because you have at the very least started to accept it as part of you. An important part at that. "I am a shadow. The true self" The rejection of yourself creates the shadow, makes it stronger, and hostile. Acceptance makes it a strength, a new path forward. But either way it is an important part of that person. This theory is partially arguing that Yu somehow had an inner feeling of his just...walk off. But still also get a persona because potato. And that despite Teddie existing in the TV world before Yu even arrived he would somehow have split from him
Old comment but even though the matt patt theory is just off, it's just weird how very little of Metis was mentioned (which could have helped his point but didn't take that opportunity) which we know she is aigis's shadow and how just when she appears aigis awakens to Orpheous as a gift from the MC. the Anime and the base game do straight up decomfirm teddie being Yu's shadow end off however what could have been a better theory to work off is that Metis, Teddie and Morgana are all connected of being a guide to their respective teams where all of them are created/formed from a shadow and the velvet room gave them their own conciousness that can explain how the 3 know the velvet room so well

It's explained that Yu, Namatame, and Adachi got their personas from Izanami... if he wanted to do an actual Persona theory, I'd have gone with "Teddie is Andre Laurent Jean Geraux's Shadow" myself.
If anyone cares, I personally think this is the case because of the physical appearance of Teddie's human form, Bebe's personality being that of Teddie's (except, Bebe knows of social norms and holds himself back), and both having the habit of referring to people they respect (the protagonist of their respective games) something differently than the others. Bebe feels the need to refer to the P3 protagonist as "-sama", after the first time that the protagonist impresses him. Teddie feels the need to refer to the P4 protagonist as "-sensei" after the first time that the protagonist impresses him.
On top of that, Bebe is a weeb. Not in a joking manner, but he is in fact a serious weeaboo. He is obsessed with Japanese culture and basically wants to be Japanese, to the point where he is jealous of his crazy teacher coming to class wearing a samurai helmet. This is in line with Teddie's uncertainty as to who he is, only knowing where he came from and where he wants to be from. Bebe is from France, but wants to be from Japan. Teddie is from the shadow world, but wants to be from the human world.
Hell, Bebe becomes sad about his aunt's death mostly because that would mean he would be forced to return to France, even though he was very lonely in Japan. Likewise, Teddie is a very lonely person who, despite ending up as a social butterfly, doesn't really interact with anyone outside the cast. Even when they go to a festival, you'd imagine that he'd run around having fun, but instead he demands to stick with the party members. When the party members go on their vacation, Teddie can't stand the feeling of being left alone, even though there are other people still in Inaba and he's basically been adopted by Yosuke's dad. Likewise, even when he went back for his aunt's funeral, he apparently immediately started gathering funds for a return trip back to Japan.
Bebe is furthermore, prominently a member of the Fashion club, and likes to create accessories. Teddie is frequently shown making accessories in the form of the glasses, and likes to style each one to fit the fashion of the individual team members rather than making all the glasses look the same.
My personal idea is that a few years after P3 ended, Bebe came back to Japan not knowing that the P3 protagonist died. After all, Bebe was very "lonely" in Japan, not really having true friends there with the sole exception of the P3 protagonist. After finding out about the death, Bebe felt lost, and fell into depression, essentially losing himself and falling into a spiral of "Who am I? Do I matter?" especially since nobody else really cared for who he was as a person, only hanging out with him because he was a frenchman and thus interesting for being different. Just like how Teddie was obsessed with what he was rather than who he was, while being terrified of the idea of who he was.

Igor never says you have to have a contract with Philemon in the game, just a contract, and that last little bit is just because Phil isn't explicitly brought up in the game.

The main reason I thought his theory was bullshit was because Yu is the main character who the player has full control over, his personality, his choices, his social status, his stats. So if he had a shadow then they would have to take away the players ability to choose how they wanted Yu to act because the game needed him to act a particular way for him to have a shadow of the opposite, so to me it just seems like a dumb theory because Yu couldn't have a shadow without breaking an aspect of the gameplay. Except that shadow yu is in the anime, and in arena.
Yu has a shadow the reason he doesnt have to face it is because he already accepts himself so when Izanami gives Yu "the potential" he immediately summons Izanagi (personas are the shadow of the person) with relative ease.
Actually, i think shadow Yu not wanting to leave inaba is connected to the fact that the player probably doesn't want to end the game (aka post game depression)

Yo, so, like, I wanna say some shit, or whatever... get hyped...
I know you all already have plenty of logical arguments for why Matpat's theory is incorrect (and why it's extremely rude for him to imply at the start and end of his video that the Persona fanbase is filled with people who can't do analysis work and are woefully ignorant of the contradictions found within Persona lore, on top of just implying that all Persona fans are rabid assholes who lash out at anyone who make claims against that accepted canon), but I'd still like to present my own observations, as well as ask that we only disprove Matpat's arguments with calm and rational logic, and not be too harsh on the guy (like, shitting on him for his art assets rather than the flaws in his argument).
To lay the foundation for this argument, this is only going to be using evidence and lore from P4, not any other game in the series, and especially not any of the spinoffs. The game was created with a specific vision and purpose in mind (by the head people who wrote and directed it), and many of the other games in the series were created or at least heavily influenced by completely different people in charge of directing the games' writing, such as those spinoffs which didn't have hardly any of the mainstay staff that Persona 4 had, as they were off doing better things. So, I'll only be referencing the lore as presented in P4, not the anime, not the dumb spinoffs, and not the other mainline Persona games. "Canon" is just a term used for marketing new shit. Just because a game is "canon" doesn't mean it was written by any half as competent as the original writers with any understanding of what the story was originally going for. Besides, even among the games that were made by the same people, the rules regarding the supernatural change to fit the themes they're trying to present in each specific game, if only slightly.
Now, I want to lay the foundation for what Persona 4 is presenting in the first place, as a narrative. I disagree with your interpretation of what the Velvet Room represents within P4, Filther. The elevator in P3 most certainly reflects the climb up Tartarus , and the Fool's Journey, but the car in Persona 4 doesn't represent traversing through the TV world. Persona 4, from top to bottom, is a game about pursuing the truth. The truth is the idea that constantly resurfaces in every part of the game. The characters ignore the truth in place of easy lives looking at other, meaningless things, judging other people, and looking away from the truths they don't want to face, about themselves and their situations. The story is about pursuing the truth to a grand mystery, and the difference between getting the good ending and the bad ending and the true ending all has to do with how much you decide to pursue the truth, and not accept the simple answers you already have. You have to decide to look deeper into the case when everyone wants to kill Namatame; you have to question why the case went as it did and where you got your power from to confront Izanami and reach the true ending. It's all about how much you pursue the truth. From that, and from some choice dialogue from Igor in the game, we can safely determine that the Velvet Room is a car (the fact that it's a limo isn't what's important. All the previous Velvet Rooms had be fancy and ornate too, even the elevator. Being fancy is part of the Velvet Room aesthetic. It's what the Velvet Room essentially becomes that is important to the analysis) because it's a vehicle that is driving through an impenetrable fog to an unknown destination, occasionally going off course in deep fog (the fog being a constant symbol in the game for the mystery and delusions and rumors and lies that hide the truth. This is also why the shadows become violent when the fog clears in the TV world. The shadows all want to live easy lives where they don't have to face the harshness of reality, which is blatantly explained by Adachi, so when the fog clears and the truth is laid bare, the shadows become agitated) and even stopping to correct it's heading when the investigation team stops to take the time to contemplate.
Acquiring a Persona means accepting that truth (once again, specific to P4. In P3 it was a sci-fi thing where some people just had the potential and others didn't, and in P5, getting a Persona meant you had a strong will of rebellion). Choosing to face your true self instead of looking away is what grants you the power to change that and grow stronger as a person. This is why Adachi serves as the core antagonist. The entire game has spent all it's time teaching the player that the benefits of pursuing the truth are many, and all the heroes' lives have been improved by doing so. So... Adachi argues the antithesis of this overarching message. Adachi doesn't have a shadow (he only gets possessed by the god within him, or uses that god's power to manipulate the shadows around him. He doesn't have a shadow because he isn't looking away from reality or the truth. And, I hate to uses overly simplistic logic, but in P4, if you have a Persona, that means you no longer have a shadow, plain and simple. The shadow becomes the Persona. They are one and the same; that's told to us several times, which is also why the theory that Teddie is Narukami's shadow also can't be correct in P4. And then Izanami can grant people the power to enter the TV without them having a Persona. Look at Namatame, who was granted the power to enter the TV, yet has no Persona. And Narukami only awakened to his Persona once he was already inside the TV world. We don't know when Adachi first summoned his Persona, but like I said, it's easy to observe who should and shouldn't have a Persona based on who is denying reality or not) because Adachi sees the truth, and explains the reality he sees. His view of the world is pessimistic, but it's not ignorant. He's not ignoring things he doesn't want to see; even if he doesn't like the world around him, he still observes it as it is, not flinching from the truth. As several characters imply throughout the confrontation with Adachi, he is meant to represent why people can't live alone. Why people need friends and bonds and whatever to make their lives worth living once they see the truth. That's why Adachi's ark ends with him considering his bond with Dojima, which paints hope for his future.
On that note, it also wouldn't make sense to the game's themes for Teddie to be a major character's shadow because this truth is never revealed. If the true ending has been reached, and our characters all fully believe in not stopping until they reach the absolute truth, then why the fuckshit would the game still have a secret hidden mystery? It contradicts the purpose of the writing.
Similarly, any discussion of wtf Teddie is should probably have something to do with asking why he can make exits to the TV world, or why he can make the glasses that let everyone else see through the fog. Those are way more pressing questions than trying to identify who in the entire world could Teddie be the shadow of. Also, Teddie does have a contract, which could potentially allow him into the Velvet Room. Rather, he's the only major character in the game that forms a significant agreement with the other characters and repeatedly brings that agreement up when considering what he should do. He made a promise to the group, and he made a promise to Nanako, which are important contracts. The contract is only physical in P3. In P4, Narukami has "entered into a contract in his daily life", which isn't really all that different from Teddie, which is likely why Teddie can enter the Velvet Room when he's searching for his truth. Of course, compared to the rest of my argument, that theory is only speculation. Everything else I've said I'm entirely confident in it's accuracy.
Laslty, I wanna just note that you're not entirely correct when you say that theories or stuff like Cinema Sins need to be held to a higher standard of analysis. They're just entertainment, first and foremost. They aren't trying to say a film sucks because of the things they're pointing out (at least I highly doubt they are), they're just making funny, silly observations for the sake of comedy for the viewer. Pointing out contradictions in their arguments is completely pointless because they aren't actually trying to argue anything. That being said, Matpat always claims to only be producing "just a theory" videos, but that's not really the case, since he also seems like he's insisting that his theories are absolutely correct some of the time, like in this P4 video he put up, which is most certainly not just entertainment. Also, by making a blanket statement that almost all fans of Game Theory and anyone who upvoted Matpat's video are people who've never heard of Persona and are easily convinced by anything Matpat argues, you're insulting that group of people in the same rude and unfair way that he insulted the Persona fanbase at the start of his video. Just sayin'.

Jorge González Likely but it was more likely made because Persona 5 became uber popular, and so someone working for him or he himself wanted to make a theory based on it to play off of it's popularity and when interest would increase do to the anime recently coming out. So they do a quick Google search for Persona theories and find some Teddie theories and someone lazily decides what the theory and it's outcome should be Teddie being His shadow, and then they look for evidence to support their theory threw the wiki and forum posts.
No one properly proof reads it as they want to send the video out when it will get the most clicks, so waiting too long might hurt their potential add revenue, as Matpat has been known to care about UA-cam's algorithms and how to game them. And they view there views as being literally entertainment and not something to be taken seriously, which is an easy way to deflect critisms of being lazy when making videos and not actually knowing what you are talking about.

The reason why they use the base personas in arena (and in strikers, for that matter) is that a) they're easier to design/animate and b) they're more iconic than the evolved forms. @@dededeletethis9940 the reason the Shadow Ops still have their ultimate personas while the others don't is simple, they're the only team that had their evolutions tied to story progression. Having the P4/P5 Ultimate Personas show up in the spinoffs would serve to "canonize" which links were and weren't maxed out and is probably intentionally left out to not upset people fighting over which of their "waifus" was canon by simply making none canon

Jokes aside I think that you did a great job a deconstructing MatPat's theory and pointing out all the flaws. It was another poorly made theory that even someone like me who only played Persona 5 could see some problems in there. It was very interesting to see someone who has played all the games (or at least experienced them) take a crack a this. Great job!
I'm pretty sure your shadow and persona can't exist at the same time. Like when Yosuke's shadow comes back, he loses his persona. So if Teddie was Yu's shadow, either Yu wouldn't have Izanagi or Teddie just wouldn't exist.

If Teddy were Narukami’s shadow, he would have, you know, turned into Izanagi. I always assumed that Narukami faced his shadow at the beginning of the game in the dream induced by Izanami.
The dream sequence already allows you to summon Izunagi, just shrouded in the fog.

Yeah, I felt the same way when Matpat when he covered Mega Man and claimed Dr Light was the real villain, ignoring that Mega Man 7's ending was changed from the Japanese version and Robot Masters were Three Laws compliant (but Mega Man X isn't). He even used panels from the Archie comic, which also established that the Robot Masters are beholden to the Three Laws!
And his hollow knight video where he outright says he ignored information that directly disproved his theory, in the same video he is making about that theory.
