- Michelle, Hand expert for Virtual Hand Care, explains why your finger or hand can be swollen for a long time after an injury.
I get asked this question all the time so I wanted to share with you some of the reasons why swelling takes a long time to go away. Swelling in the finger or fingers, hand, or wrist after an injury can be part of the normal healing process. Although, there could be other reasons why the swelling stays in the fingers or hand so check out this video to learn more!
Luckily there are ways you can try to help speed the process along. You can check out my Best 5 Tips for Swollen Fingers here • BEST 5 TIPS for SWOLLE...

I searched all over for this😢 thanks
bro my advice for you.. do not search for this on the internet, otherwise you may get crazy!
I raced motorcycles for 20 + years and was ready to give up on my hands. Chronic pain, nerve damage, atrophy, 5 surgeries, trips to the ER, nerve blocks, cervical fusions, scaphoid reconstruction etc. Came across your videos post carpal tunnel surgery and I feel like I should be paying you for how much it is helping. Thank you!
Also, you're adorable 💕
Wow 20 years!! Lots of use out of those hands! I'm so glad the videos continue to help you.
I have a multifragmentary fracture in my left middlefinger. It's broken 3 times lengthwise! :D Thank God, everything was still in line so I didn't need surgery. After 6 weeks, it healed quite well but the lowest segment close to the hand is still swollen. From your videos I know why that is and I have looked in your videos for a few exercises because by physiotherapist is overbooked. Watching your videos is a pleasure because you answer all the questions I have at this point and you present all that helpful info so beautifully. Best wishes from Germany!!!!
Thank you for the useful information ☺️
Thank you for the useful information 💕
Thanks for making this video - I fractured my ring finger on thanksgiving and after 3 months though the fracture healed, it's still swell. now I understand why. thanks!
dislocated pinky finger I have same problem does the swolling goes away in 2-3 weeks and when can i start writting again I have exam next month after 30 days
Great information. Thanks!
Love this information you gave. Makes me feel better already.
Happy to hear it’s helpful!
Great video and explanation
I was cutting a bunch of strong cardboard for a long time to make book covers. It was difficult to cut through the cardboard but I kept going. Even when my finger started to hurt, I still kept at it until I finished. I'm too stubborn for my own good sometimes.
My finger (pointer finger, middle area where it was rubbing against the handles of the scissors) is now sort of swollen. I thought it would turn into a blister after a few hours but fluid is just staying in place which makes my finger kinda stiff. The area where my finger was rubbing against the grip feels kinda numb when I touch it.
What do I do? I have commissions to do and I don't want my finger to bug me while I'm drawing :,3
Just got my splint off after removing k wires from 4th and 5th base metacarpal fracture and been doing exercises and notice a bit of swelling, exercise my hand continuously every hour. How much rest should I give it from time to time?
Very helpful, thanks!
Thank you. I sliced my hand in between my pointer and thumb pretty bad . Its been 4 days and still swollen and painful . No discharge ,redness or scabbing but a lot of swelling and pain . I have been sliced so many times and i have never had swelling from it . First video with exactly the info i am looking for 👍.
your videos are awesome.
tho i got a question, how could i straighten my middle fingers' distal phalanges?
I needed this, thank you 😊
Mulțumesc din suflet pentru aceste sfaturi utile.
Keep up the good work
Thank you so much 🙏 my pinky just got healed but is still super stiff and swollen. So glad to have found your channel! God bless you!

What a fantastic video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This really is a great video. I hurt 3 of the middle finger knuckles about 3 months ago. They are still a little sore and swollen, as 3 months have gone by I have been increasingly worried. This video as really given me insight and answers into my injury. I have searched quite a bit on google, and this video covers information that did not come across in my searching. Thank you!

Im at 9 weeks healing of spiral fract of little finger, going in for 4th X-ray to see how healed over bone is
Doc says get finger moving for mobility, Im afraid to move it much, Im going to give it 2 more weeks to heal before next X-ray
Doc says this seems to be healing slowly. How much stretching with your techniques would you advise for movement ?
I have moved little finger ever so gently, I use my thumb to brace bone straight and secure so i dont force any pressure on this bone, before i bend joints. Any suggestion further ?
Great video but you never mentioned a time range…what’s an estimate for say a jammed finger that has gotten swollen. How long does it take for the swelling to go down? And how long should I do the RICE method before starting mobility work? Thanks!
Hi
Would you have any suggestions on what causes all middle finger joints to become unbendable with no pain after the back of the wrist has been injured and swelled up. The wrist swelling eventually went away and there is loss of wrist flexibility. But the middle finger joints still remain unmovable. I have seen a bone and joint doctor but he suggested wrist replacement without telling me why my fingers were stuck straight.
Your videos are very good; i just had a very bad accident and a surgery and still trying to heal and I wonder how to improve faster. Thanks for your feedback!
Thank you for sharing this information. My little finger was severed and dislocated at second join. Swelling is there and does skin also takes time to cover the wound on finger?
I punched the frame of my steering wheel out of anger weeks ago. Don’t have any swelling but I could still feel a uncomfortable pain. My hand is most definitely not like it was before. But it’s working pretty well. Will time make it heal or should I get it checked out? Thanks
You answered my question that I was asking for few weeks,,, I really do love you...
Thank you very much ❤❤❤
Happy to help!
I fell, tripped over a very small step, and fell forward, and hurt my hand. That seems to be my only injury. It hurt really bad! About an hr. after, I could move them slightly, but still alot of pain. That was about 7 hrs. Ago. The pain has lessened, I applied some pain cream with hemp, and that seemed to help. So I'm not sure if might have a sprain, or some trauma with some swelling. Can you advise me what to do next? Thank you!
Hello Michelle, thanks for the video!.. i do have a question regarding permanent swelling in the finger joint after an injury that was years ago.. is it normal that the finger joint may remain swollen for ever that was caused from an injury years ago.. cause i had a finger injury like 6 years ago but my fingerjoint is still swollen and thick but otherwise i do not have any pain or limited motion.. the problem is just the swelling.. is this normal that the swelling may stay for a lifetime in the finger or could there be other underlying situations?
Hello from that UK. I have had a yeast allergy from putting my finger in warm yeast my finger has swollen. Any tips on how to get the swelling down?
I got my finger ripped opened at the tip from a dolly that fell on top of it so anyways they put stitches and after the healing process my finger came out swollen from the edge of the finger so it kind of looks deformed by any chance will that little bump go away or is my finger going to stay that way for good?

How common is it for a bone contusion on the first MP to cause swelling 3 months later? Doc says there is no fracture yet my hand is still swollen.

Hello Michelle,
I had an fall 2 months ago while playing football and injured my Ring finger, the PIP joint is still swollen and is hard, probably a bony swelling .
Can you tell me what can I do about it?
My right big finger was broken, and now its fully healed but one thing, it remains swollen and I feel a shock pain in it when I stretch it😥 ,,,The doctor say the swelling wont go away😥
She forgot the most important thing: use Kobalt tape to wrap the injured finger to help push out the swelling ! Plus learn how to wrap finger ! Starting from the nail back to webbing of the finger! Plus don't wrap it tightly! Smiles!

Can you do a video on MCP joint wash-out surgery, I got bit by a dog, left my hand for a few days to see how things went, turns out my hand was infected and 2 wash-out surgeries was performed. Now my hand just isn't the same after 3 months, it's stiff and tight plus I have a massive scar. Thanks in advance
Thank you
How long does it take for the swelling to go down on average? 1 mth? 2 mths or more?
I was suffering from fifth metacarpal neck fracture , just 4 days ago remove the plaster, but, my finger is still swelling more than the fracture area, do you have any tips for this ?
I had a finger laceration on october the 10th, and although it doesn't hurt while I move my ring finger, the area is swollen and the skin doesn't look recovered yet even though its entirely closed up, it hurts a lot if I hit myself with something by accident, everyone who saw the injury said I needed stitches, although my parents ultimately decided not to bring me to the hospital (possibly because I was acting way too calm and comfortable, tho i did get dizzy and everything went blue a few minutes after, had to sit down) it closed up in about a week, and continued to heal and stopped hurting in about 3 weeks or so, do you think me not getting stitches had something to do with it still being swollen after 2 months?
Did we all got our finger fucked up in october Lmfao,I got it like 3 days before my b day like 20th oct and i was playing basketball,a ball have hit my fingers and the middle one have been hurting me but it stopped. Now its swollen and-Yea i hate it lmao
you are great , and beautiful may God bless you that is a big relief for me
Can I apply ice if the joints in my finger are inflamed? I'm also using voltaren gel.
Hi Michelle can lymphatic massage help with swelling in a finger?
Helpful. I dislocated (I think) the middle joint on my pinky when I tripped hiking about eight weeks ago. Functionally, it's fine - I can play piano and guitar, okay grip strength, so I don't think the bone was affected. However, the "inside" (next to my ring finger side) where I guess the tendons/ligaments are continues to have a bulge and is a little sore if you push on it. I'm totally fine with waiting, as I'd hate to lose the functionality I have now with a cast or splint.
Guitar player here. Coworker smashed multiple fingers between two boards 3 days ago. Major swelling and stiffness and soreness. But really no loss of mobility at the joints, thankfully. It's just really painful to curl them and painful to the touch anything. I can't play yet, not even close. I'm so worried about "permanent" or prolonged swelling in the ring finger of my fretting hand. When I do a comparison with the fingers on my right hand....I want to cry.
Guitar player here as well. Injured my middle finger breaking up a dog fight four months ago, and my right hand middle finger is still sore and swollen. I can still use it for finger style playing, but I don't think I'll be able to gig for two or three hours, as it starts to get sore and weak. Hoping it heals within the year.
Did your finger ever get better? I'm living your exact life of having an injured middle finger on my right hand from breaking up a dog fight, except I draw instead of play guitar. @@Jonathan-mt9up
Its been a month i twisted my Small finger at distal interphaelangeal part and the swelling is not increasing neither it's going and Little pain persists? What to do
Hi, thank you for the video. I jammed my pinky finger at the joint nearest the nail. It's still pretty tender and a little swollen after 2 weeks but I have full mobility of the joint with just a little stiffness. I was worried why it was taking so long.
Was it broken? I have kind of the same problem with my index, I have full mobility, just a little pain if I press it. Any advice?
I cut my finger needing 9 stitches. lower part of finger swollen yet. i cannot bend it much yet.
Well, it is with great relief that I found this. Doctors have been removing wood from my hand (twice) but my swelling remains 4 weeks on. Ultra sound and xrays say it's all out of my second last finger but the swelling and pain remain like taxes. So the end of the finger seems normal but the joint close to the palm seems swollen and stiff. Maybe time is what is needed? Subscib and liked!
my small finger on my left hand middle joint is still swallon after 2 years and i can not roll it into a fist will it every go down ?
I dislocated my finger about 2 months ago and had to push it back into place myself. Feel like it could be still slightly out of place as it’s not gotten any less swollen. Can’t feel any fluid that would be from the swelling but not sure if it will just heal
Thank you I am 6 weeks out from traumatic middle finger near amputation at furtherst knucke area which also fractured the bone in the adjacent segment. Well a great hand specialist reattached everything and now the skin is 95" back in one piece and the bone knitted enough to remove K-wires but finger is still pretty swollen stiff and fragile feeling easily causing pain. Just frustrating the swelling remains
My right index finger has been stiff and hard for 2 years. i think it may have been from gout. i don't recall hurting it. i do use it alot with the mouse and keyboard. strict
I broke my little finger of my right leg. So the doctor use pin. After removing the pin my finger is still swollen. How much time it will take to go to normal??
Please why do my small finger swell and go down on its own and no pain when it swell.
My finger got crushed about 6 years ago and now just that finger is clubbing and is affecting my guitar playing is there something i can do to fix it
I smushed my finger today with a heavy safe door and my swelling has not gone down and its purple and numb on the tip so it concerns me a little. Is it best to have just filled a incident at work to have gotten that checked? I just don't like that my numbness hasn't gone away. it almost feels like when you leave a rubber band on and its turning your finger purple.
i had approximately 5 years ago hit my finger on a ball and since then my joint is swollen and thicker then normal.. the swelling never did go away and the thickening.. but i can fully move my finger and do not have pain (i can also extend my finger more then normal like hyperextension because of the injury i had).. is this situation normal?
My pinky top bone is swollen and hurting a lot and when I press it it hurts idk what to do
Hey Michelle,
I had a traumatic wrist break with the scaphoid receiving a screw and pins being installed on the opposite side (carpal bones?) as well as a ligament tear from a mountain biking accident. It has been 6 weeks since the accident & surgery and my index and middle fingers are still swollen almost twice the size of the fingers on my other hand. The swelling hasnt gone down much at all in the 6 weeks. I noticed you mentioned caffiene which i usually have up to 400 mg a day. I did not know this! Are there any other common substances that contribute to this aswell? Does increased water intake help the swelling?
Im freaking out as im a master electrician, mountain biker and love other sports and video games. Everything i do involves this hand i lost.
Beautiful explanations.. thank you
Increased water intake can definitely help but there are other ways to help swelling such as compression, movement (not aggressive), etc. I would definitely see a Certified hand therapist who can give you more specific tips because your injury/surgery is quite involved requires a specific protocol to follow.
did it get better?
@@siro8472 The fingers are still a little stiff but I have full movement, but there is a small amount of lingering stiffness and nerve damage. The wrist never really healed. It only moves 45 degrees now and beyond that it becomes painful, likely due to cartilidge which cannot be fixed. I either have to live with the pain or look into getting a fusion which will remove wrist movement forever to stop it from bending to the point of feeling pain. This injury overall screwed up my ability to work and have active sports type hobbies like mountain biking.
My little finger is swellen lightly and lightly it's ache it's broken or not tell me please
mine is 1 week old, i dislocated my finger it's like PIP DISLOCATION, how should i exercise it and when do i rest it, it's still swollen and it still hurt when i bend it
Bowl with either ice water or warm water helps.
I injured my finger by pulling too hard on something and heard a velcro sounding ripping noise. My finger was swollen and stiff for around 4 months and it's been a 13 months later and it still has a little stiffness and fluid around my knuckle. The doctor told me if I can bend it then it will be fine. He said he can give me a cortizone shot if wanted . Can you tell me if my finger will eventually heal and not have fluid build up around it. 13 months seems like a long time to heal.
My middle finger middle knuckle is swollen from 1 year and I hurts while folding it😣still I can't understand what is that

My finger just keeps swelling despite me taking anti inflammatory medicine after the first sign of swelling and keeping it raised the whole day and night without using it or massaging it. Something is wrong but what else should I do?
Thanks for the info, I've been out for 6 weeks with a broken finger tip but it's is still swollen and slightly painful. Maybe I've been a little too aggressive this week trying to get it back to working condition.

Hi i been looking for videos for my answer and you came on top results. Long story short, I got in a fight and broke my pinky. I didn’t know it was that bad until I went into and my pinky needed surgery. Had a cast on for a month, then my pins came out another month later. I’m almost a week into it, I can almost make a fist again. My question is I’m due for another appointment in a month for a check up. I notice a lot of improvement but the swelling, throughout time you think it will be 100% gone? It’s kinda bulgy where I broke it. And maybe thats why I have a hard time bending it?
How is your finger now
@@diffident2406 the bulgy part is there in my pinky joint, swelling went down. I can use my hand normal again but on cold days it hurts and not really functional. But when I rub it down it becomes slowly mobile. Summer time it works like no other tbh

Interesting video. I do have a very important question for you: I broke 4th and 5th metacarpal bones by accident at work and I've been operated with Kishner wires, four in total two for each finger. The breakage happened just behind the nuckles. I removed the wires after one month and a week and I began fisioteraphy right away.
After more then 10 meetings and exercises at home I still cannot close my hand properly expecially from the nuckles, the first bend is just around 45 degrees... I cannot basically pull a rope...
I'll check another therapist tomorrow but do you have any tip?
Thanks Gabriele
It can take time but you should be seeing progress! Talk to your therapist. These are great for knuckle stiffness too- ua-cam.com/video/GEUV37qkimM/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/Z_nEFYY6D2I/v-deo.html
