What would you suggest for trigger thumbs? It’s been frustrating to splint (because of the limited choices) and the steroid injections offered moderate and very temporary relief. Getting a referral for a hand surgeon from rheumatologist.

Thanks. Hand specialist I saw last Friday said there are NO exercises for trigger finger. The only treatment is up to 2 cortisone shot and then surgery. And then she gave me some exercises for other hand problems and one of them causes my fingers to trigger - so it sounds like I should stop doing that exercise! I'm hopeful that your exercises will help since I'm only about stage 2.

Interesting. What your hand specialist said ties in with stuff I've read, so it would be interesting to hear what Michelle has to say about those other (on the surface, more radical) solutions. I'm not even sure splinting has actually been shown to be efficacious. It's all a bit difficult for the ordinary sufferer to navigate.

I have been getting worse trigger fingers on both hands ever since last year when my friend bought me an Android phone. My ringer finger on right hand is the one most holding the phone and my index finger left hand is sore and the ring finger on left hand also wanting to trigger. I hold a stylus in my left hand for poking keys and screen on Android held in my right hand.
I have been massaging both hands and using hot compresses ... and now watching your videos. I will be doing the facecloth folded.
I am ambidextrous so my hands get equal stress.
Surprising that after 40 years of working as a statistical typist, I don't have carpal tunnel in either hand! Maybe my fingers are rebelling ... or maybe just the holding and poking of the Android.
I will do as many of your exercises ... and report back.
Thank you very much! - it does not hurt to type ... 95 wpm with words and 125 wpm with numbers. I'm in my 87th year and do also have arthritis; and have had gout flares in both feet!!!

I am an older gentleman soon to turn 83, whose trigger middle finger of the left hand started suddenly, with no apparent cause, 2 weeks ago. This morning I saw a hand specialist who recommended minimally invasive surgery (ultrasound-guided trigger finger release).
I have great confidence in my doc, and I am willing to undergo surgery if absolutely necessary, but whatever the ailment (and I've had many over the decades) I always try to see if there are non-surgical alternatives to try before getting cut. Browsing the internet I ran across a few of Michelle's exercises, tried them out, and plan to try them for a few weeks before deciding whether or not to have surgery.
Thank you so much, Michelle; keep up your excellent work and presentations.
Note: I am a psychologist, not an M.D., so I recommend that readers of my comments consult their doctor or health care provider to identify their particular medical issues and appropriate treatment(s).

When I worked part time in the packing dept of a warehouse while in college I developed trigger finger. What worked for me was immobilizing my fingers at the knuckle after I got home from work and while I slept. It took a while but I eventually got to the point where my finger wouldn't catch. The other thing that helped a lot was simply keep my joints warm. Either resting my hands in warm water or, when I was at work, running warm water them in the sink.

Thank you so much. The exercise tips 3-5 were extremely helpful for my trigger thumb. I had elbow replacement in January 2021 and for maintenance went to a chiropractor in my new location for scar tissue reduction treatment after moving out of state. Sadly in the process the chiropractor activated thumb irritation causing my thumb to trigger. I had left the state and suffering for 3 months as I was unable to follow up with the chiropractor or my original hand care providers. I did manage a break when I was able to return to my original occupational therapist during a quick visit back to my original location where I had the surgery. (Sadly I had moved out of state and was unable to follow up on the problem with my original physician and therapist who are awesome hand specialists). Your exercise tips 3-5 relieved the pain immediately. I am so very thankful to you for providing these exercises online. Thank you again for your very clear and professional presentation on these exercise tips.

Thecsurgeon had given me the figure 8 splint which is such a simple, ingenious design however it locks my finger up in a straight position. A relaxed position as been more beneficial. Hi ! Thanks for the video. I really learnt a couple of new things. I noticed that the pencil exercise causes my finger to still lock. I tried it so many ways. Ironically if it is just to exercise the finger then the splint actually suffices for limited movement. My finger gets really really stiff in the morning but it eases off during the day mostly and comes back when I want to rest. Just started the splint a day ago.

Thanks, that has been very informative. I bought some Oval Eight splints on Amazon. First time I mistakenly thought my finger was larger than it was, so they were all too large. Second time I got a set with far more variety, and started wearing a 10. That worked, including getting me through a night's sleep, but when I used my had it tended to fall off now and then. And the last time it came off, I lost it. So I went back to the second set and put on a 9. That is working, and doesn't seem as prone to falling off.
Which brings me to the only reason I have anything to say. I went back to Amazon to get some backups, which is to say more size 9. Each of the sets, which had 8 and 11 each, cost $10. A single size 9? $13! A pack of five? $36!. Cheaper to buy assortments. I found a set for $5 that includes some bits of padding to adjust the fit. Yes, I understand the economics of inventory, sales and shipping a specialized item mean they won't ever be really cheap, but I found the situation amusing none the less. Anyway, thanks again.

Thank you very much for your generous advices. I just found them, after I had a surgery a month ago. My finger still triggers, less but still does. I think I will try to do the exercices you recommend, even if I had this surgery, what do you think? I must say that I was doing a few things you firmly recommend NOT to do to try to recover. So, thank you again for your videos.

I've had a trigger finger for at least 5 times in different fingers. Not once did I have to go through this. I went to a hand surgeon. He gave me a shot where the finger was locking up and I was good to go. Cleared up in a few days.

Hi.. thanks so much for yor range of eexercise and detailed presentation. It's very important to know what os happening inside the hand to know if it,'s going right. Oi have 3 trigger fingers both middle finger and my right ring finger so I'm doing # 5 interlacing my fingers. Massage would be more effective but my hands get very tired.

Hello Miss Michelle! Thank you for your videos they are all so helpful! I was diagnosed with thumb trigger finger and tendonitis on my hands two years ago. However, my fingers in hands continued to swell and now I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in the begining stage. I am 30 years old by the way. Also my index finger 👆 has a swan neck deformity and a ganglion cyst. My wrist of the same hand hurts too 😂. My thumbs have again trigger finger. Now I am taking some pills. However, none of my doctors do not explain to me if my swan neck deformity in my index finger can be fixed since it has also a ganglion cyst. Is there any chance to bend this finger completely again and fix its swan neck deformity? I am a little bit desperate. Maybe I am overdramatic. Thank you in advance. Your channel helps me and many other people. 😊😊

My left middle finger began catching occasionally a few years ago and has progressively gotten worse since then. I chalked it up to getting older and early arthritis. I woke up this morning with it locked in full flexion. And I mean locked. I am actually a licensed PTA which puts me at a slight disadvantage with hand issues however, I know quite a bit about inflammation relief. My wife immediately tried recommending heat but I knew ice was required. I just didn’t know where to use it. I never would have guessed at the base of the finger where it joins the palm. As soon as you described it, all of my hand anatomy started coming back. 5 minutes with ice caused my finger to release so effortlessly that I didn’t even realize that it straightened until I looked down and saw it. Thank you so much! I will begin with your recommended exercises which I love how you presented from a clinical standpoint. I’ll likely plan to see a hand specialist since this has been a chronic and progressive issue. Thanks again!

I'm hesitant to use ice as its WARMTH that seems to help my trigger thumb (Washing dishes, warm shower, etc). But, perhaps I should try ice which seems counter intuitive since the thumb feels kind of "frozen" to begin with.

@@usaman7358 As a licensed PTA, we were taught as well as the research overwhelmingly shows that heat is to treat sore stiff muscles and cold is for joint and soft tissue inflammation. Most people think heat is good because we’re warm blooded animals and heat “feels good” but it increases blood flow which lead to more inflammation and in the case of trigger finger, you absolutely want to reduce inflammation.
Finally, both heat and cold should be for 15-20 minutes at most per hour but you can alternate them back and forth without concern.

I just came up my own technique that made mine heaps better , you start waving your hand really fast sideways and then straight up and down with your fingers spread out . Its still quite bad but it took some of the pain away and freed up my fingers up a bit . I guess it gets the blood moving around more in your fingers .
