It's so nice to see Clue become more popular in recent years than it ever was while in theaters. It really came and went with a whimper at the box office. But, to be fair, we are talking about an era of movies that were consistently good. Cant wait to see how you two enjoy all the witty banter and the national treasure that is Ms Madelyn Kahn. "Flames on the side of my face" might just be the greatest improv ever caught on celluloid.

The flick was also heavily marketed on a gimmick that... didn't work.

Good call on the “Flames” bit. I’ve loved that performance since I was a kid, long before I learned it was improvised. I also love her little countermelody during “For she’s a jolly good fellow”, especially that high note near the end of the group singing it.

@@arandomnamegoeshere Indeed, which is unfortunate, cause I appreciate the risk they took. But imagine you go and you get only the "Ms Peacock kills everyone" ending...I mean, its significantly weaker than the other two...you would have come away with a worse movie and you never see the "flames on side of the face"...then you wait for it to come on cable and see the version you WISH you'd seen.

What are you talking about? You can pick out a few gems, but the 80s were an arid desert for good cinema. Certainly not consistently good.

"It's a matter of life after death. He died and I got a life."
Madeline Kahn steals this movie and every film she's in. That and the "flames on the side of my face" speech are some of my favorite lines from any film.
Also, Tim Curry is hilarious running from room to room during his reveals, but he's also being true to the board game. In the game, if you want to make an accusation, you have to be in the room where you are saying that it happened. I love that detail.

Despite the talent of the people they were forbidden to ad lib because the people in charge felt that it would mess up the flow of the show. Madeline Kahn ad libbed the flames line and it got left in because everyone liked it so much. The people that got jammed up in the doors and stairs are a throwback to the game because two people can’t enter a room or stairway at the same time.

Yes! Madeleine Khan was such a funny and wonderful actress! I had such a crush on her when I was a kid in the 70's/80's. She just had a way of speaking that makes you laugh even when she wasn't trying to be funny. She also delivered lines in unique and consequently hilarious ways. She was just a naturally funny lady! Like you said, it didn't matter how large or small her role in a movie, the moment she came on screen she just stole the movie. I remember a short-lived TV sitcom in which she starred. I think it was called "O, Madeleine" or something like that. Just love her. We lost her too soon and she was too young.

Before Clue ( the movie) there was an older, equally star studded hilarious murder mystery called "Murder By Death." It's a whodunnit that like Clue you'll never guess the ending! It's naughty, funny, tense, and fun. Hope you'll check it out too! Eileen Brennan (Mrs. Peacock) also starred in it. It was hilarious with so many jokes and one-liners.

One thing I don't often see pointed out is that in the game, your can't overtake another piece. (Example: if one is in a doorway, you can't go through that door until that piece moves.) They did that in this movie up until Wadsworth starts running around explaining the murders. Any time the characters try to pass each other, they collide. Or when Scarlet and Mustard try to slide past each other. Once you notice, you see it happening all over.
Funny/sad passage of time note. The movie came out in '85 but based in '54. If this movie came out now, in '24, it would be based in the '93...

The screenplay and delivery harkens back to the Golden Age of Hollywood screwball comedies, with the added dimension of being made in the 80's when you could push the envelope more than you could in the 40's/50's. It's lightening in a bottle. It shouldn't work, but it does.

When this movie was released in theaters there were 3 different versions - with the 3 endings that you saw. The idea was that you wouldn't know which ending you would get when you went to see it, and they hoped people would go to see it multiple times to see all of the endings.
Here in my part of Canada they were advertised in the newspaper as "Ending A", "Ending B", and "Ending C", so once you saw it once you'd know which of A, B and C you'd seen and which one to go see if you wanted to see all three. But I've heard stories of people in the States where it didn't specify in the advertisements which ending was at which theater, so just imagine someone watching the movie one time, then going to another theater to see it again - hoping to get one of the two other endings - and it turns out they get the same ending they've already seen.
When Clue was released on video (and later DVD) all 3 endings were included in the movie - as you saw in this movie version.

Most fans of the movie agree that the first ending truly makes the most sense as Miss Scarlet given her personality and occupation would make for a logical murderer more easily than the others since her motive was greed, among other things. The other two endings are fun little "what if scenarios" but I personally imagine in my head canon that the true ending is the first one. :-)

That's Dr. Frank N Furter in Rocky Horror!" Well, I'd been debating about going to RHPS, but that sealed the deal for me, and I went the next week. *I'm having déjà vu.* Anyways, if I didn't mention it before, Clue is referred to as a screwball comedy which goes perfect with crime thriller plots. Some really good screwball comedies are _What's Up, Doc?_ (1972) with Ryan O'Neal and Barbara Streisand, and _Arsenic and Old Lace_ (1944) with Cary Grant. *NO SPOILERS.*

When this was in theaters, there were three alternate endings. There was hope you would go see the film three times, of course.
Clue has six suspects, all with last names referencing colors (Colonel Mustard, Mr. Green, Professor Plum, and Miss Scarlett, Mrs. Peacock, and Mrs White), Six weapons (Revolver, Candlestick, Lead pipe, Rope, Knife, and Wrench), and nine rooms in a house with two secret passages (Hall, Ballroom, Billiard room, Conservatory, Kitchen, Dining room, Lounge, Library, Study). In the game, Mr. Boddy is the victim.
In Great Britain, for what reason I don't know, the game is known as "Cluedo."

    • @zoesumra9152
      @zoesumra9152 4 дні тому

Cluedo was the original name, as the game was originally British. I don't know why the Americans dropped the ending. Maybe Americans didn't play Ludo.

When this was released in theaters, it had a different ending for different theaters. So, you had to go to others places to see all three endings. When it came out on DVD, they released all three endings as you've seen. Leslie Ann Warren (Miss Scarlet) has played in a lot of TV shows and movies. She was an original Cinderella many years ago in a live action movie version. She was also great in a movie called Victor/Victoria starring Julie Andrews who plays a woman playing a man playing a woman. It's very good. A lot of twists and turns like Clue. You two should watch it soon.

You need to watch Murder By Death, another murder mystery comedy. Written by Neil Simon, it spoofs the worlds greatest sleuths from literature and the movies. Very funny. It also features famed writer, Truman Capote in a rare acting roll.

So this all makes more sense if you have played the game. The game is comprised of the group of characters portrayed, a "Body", the list of weapons, and the rooms this all just took place in. To win the game you have to figure out who was the murderer, what weapon was used and in what room. So you attempt to win the game buy making a guess such as "I think it was Mrs. Peacock in the Study with the lead pipe". So all of this was very familiar when you have played the game. As far as the end, when this movie came out in theaters, each theater was sent a copy of the movie with a different possible ending of the three you saw. So people would see a different outcome depending on where you saw it. My friends and I actually went to three different ones to see all three endings. It was very cool. This was also such an amazing cast of actors that were very popular for the time so it was really cool to see. This is also one of my favorite comic performances of Tim Curry.

A lot of other commenters have suggested you watch Murder By Death. If you go for that one, you might be able to appreciate it more if you know from the get-go that the main characters are derived from a number of the most famous fictional detectives on screen: Agatha Christie's characters Miss Jane Marple and Hercule Poirot, Dashiell Hammett's Nick and Nora Charles (The Thin Man) and Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon), and Earl Biggers' Charlie Chan (a "Chinese" detective from a time when Asian main characters were always played in caricature by white actors). I believe there was also a deleted scene where a Sherlock Holmes derivative was invited, but was too smart to show.
