The three endings were only all released on the VHS. When originally in theaters, each movie theater got a single of the three endings to show. It confused the hell out of people when they talked about it with others, and nothing matched up. Pure genius!
It was a marketing ploy to try and get people to see the movie in the theater multiple times. I've never heard whether anyone ever analyzed it's in-theater performance to see if this did get repeat viewings or not.
Pure genius perhaps, box office suicide most probably. On release the film flopped, largely driven by the critics who blasted the film for the most part. I believe, had the film included in all three endings in the cinema, it would have been better received. They actually thought people might go and see the film thrice to catch all the endings. Smh

Yeah... perhaps Clue was too ahead of it’s time: Had social media existed when it was in theatres, I bet people would have created so much buzz by arguing about who the revealed murderer was and calling each other names for not paying attention in the theatre. I would love to go see a movie nowadays and having a different ending every time I go to the theatre. I hope Ryan Reynolds’ reboot comes through and does the multiple endings when it comes out in theatre.

Being gay was actually a *serious* thing in 20th century espionage. Homophobia in the American government led to any gay government employee or official being easily blackmailed by foreign powers on threat of being revealed to their superiors.
That fact, then, made the homophobia worse (and homosexuality a cause for instant-firing), which made it easier to blackmail anyone who slipped and revealed his or her homosexuality, and on and on.

I came here to say this too, i think the criminal charge they were often convicted on was "gross indecency". I found this out when i watched The Imitation Game which is a great movie
Not just in the government but in society as a whole. It's "weird" for the new generation but not at the time.
This was also depicted during the 50's when the nuclear family was a social standard.
Mr. Green’s ending is a nice homage to when players would win the game by correctly guessing themselves as the killer. (Along with the weapon and location)
I liked that one too. It made the mist sense to me.
Fun fact: Ms. White’s lines: “Flames, flames, flames? On the side of my face ...” That was ad-libbed. The movie had a lot of comedic actors, and the director was strict about none of them ad-libbing because the carefully crafted dialogue was so important. But Madeline Kahn threw those lines in anyway, and they loved it so much they kept it in the movie.
She was legendary, my favorite part of the movie. RIP
@Lee Brown I totally get what you mean but with this movie they didn't need to because the writing was that good! I think also why they were also strict was because of timing, I don't think they had time to mess around. That Mrs. White's rant is my one of my favorite parts and I crack up every time, I love that everyone's reactions to her are 100% genuine, you can actually see Tim Curry trying everything he can to not laugh!
@@Adrianne519 If the story I got is true, she actually had forgotten her lines and started to riff off the fly. The reason they cut away from her when they did was because it went on a bit longer than what we saw and the rest of the cast and crew had started to lose it. Also, her prat fall on the stairs wasn't intended. Her dress was too tight and restricted her leg movement for moving up the stairs at that speed. It is a testament to Curry as well for rolling on with it.

Some of the actors (I believe Curry and McKean but I can't remember for certain) actually thought she was having a stroke because of the way she started stuttering and repeating herself.
Fun fact: The interior set pieces form an accurate reproduction of the original game board (including which rooms are connected by the secret passageways)
There was a lot of love that went into this movie. I think making it a comedy was a good call, too. It would already be hard to take a movie based on a board game seriously, but by making it a comedy everyone can just have fun while also enjoying the legitimately well thought out mystery. I've never seen someone walk away from Clue without a smile, and that's a definite win on the creative teams part.
The same set was also used again as the hotel in Dynasty they bought the set when the film was finished and redressed it.
My favorite moment is when Tim Curry is reenacting everything and he reslaps Mrs. Peacock and then imitates Mr. Green, "well I had to stop her from screaming." LOL.
Best homage to the game is that the characters have trouble getting thru doors at the same time because a rule in Clue is that you cannot enter the same space as another player. If that player is in a doorway, you cannot get out of the room.

Best movie last line is in the movie Some Like It Hot.
Because of the multiple endings, the movie bombed at the theater sbd it took years for the director to direct again. His next film was "My Cousin Vinny."
Speaking of Some Like It Hot, they Have to react to that movie. Comedy writing genius, as well as the acting and direction. Gold
Such an underrated gem! Tim Curry is absolutely brilliant, and the writing and banter is just so witty. And it still holds up today.

The timing and delivery of the dialogue are what make the movie special.
I'm a massive movie/film nerd, admittedly. The dialogue in this movie is probably some of the best I've ever seen. It's SO snappy, SO clever, SO witty, it's almost impossible not to enjoy.

The movie takes place in 1954, so being outed as gay would have basically destroyed his life.
Though if he’s married to a woman, and still into men, that means he’s bi.

Love the silliness of this movie. Green is my favorite character and the "Flames... flames... at the side of my head.." part just kills me every time.
So back in the day when this movie occurs, though it wasn't a crime, being gay was looked down upon and could be seen as a security risk for a federal job due to blackmail or whatever else. This is why Green would be afraid of losing his job.

Basically what makes this movie work is great lines delivered by very talented comedians.
And in the 1950’s, Mr Greenes “homosexuality” may not seem like a serious “crime “ to us today but back then was probably actually illegal or at least have cost him his job, for sure.
This is easily one of my favorite comedies of all time. The cast is phenomenal, the writing is so clever, and the original gimmick of three different endings in the theatrical release was a lot of fun. When it came out on VHS we got this version with all three endings combined, but when it came out on DVD they did something really cool. You could either have the disc player choose one of the endings at random, or play this version with all three combined. A new Clue movie has been in development hell for years now, I'm hoping it never gets made. Sometimes a studio gets it right the first time, I don't see how any remake could live up to this masterpiece.

Tim Curry is the GOAT! This man is so talented it's insane. And as for him in The Rocky Horror.... never thought I'd find a man in ladies lingerie sexy as hell. This is a great film and I'm super happy you watching this. Let's go!!!!
6:01 "He's so young" but this came out the same year as Back to the Future.
It's strange of you to say Christopher Lloyd looks so young in this because it was 1985, the same year Back to the Future came out.
Mrs Peacock was Eileen Brennan and she was gold! Check out some of her other movies like "Private Benjamin" and "The Last Picture Show".
Mrs White was Madeline Kahn, she was also gold. She was in "Young Frankenstein"
Another movie like this but more darkly funny is "Murder by Death". It is filled with stars incl Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, Maggie Smith (Prof McGonagall), Alec Guinness, and many others.
Harry potter reference? Pffftttt. No child, That’s THE Dowager Countess to you!
Don't forget Madeline Kahn was also in Blazing Saddles, her musical number is honestly my favorite scene in the movie.

Clue is one of the movies that taught me that misdirection and underestimation are powerful tools...
Tim Curry guested on an episode of Psych (an absolute must watch for TC fans) and then kept trying to get him so say "No" like he says it here. The episode is called American Duos and he plays a version of a Simon Cowell type that is perfection every moment he is on screen.
He was also in an episode.of Criminal Minds.
John Campbell: Psych is a great show. They should check it out. It's so ridiculous. haha

I went to a friend’s house (who has over 1,500 movies) and Clue the movie was the first movie I watched in his house.
The comedy, the acting, the comedy and mostly important the endings. My favorite parts were:
-Let us in, let us out
-Every scene were Tim Curry is in it
-The singing telegram (I burst out laughing)
-the 1 plus 2 plus 1 scene
-and mostly important, I’m going home and sleep with my wife
Everyone singing For She's A Jolly Good Fellow, with Madeline Khan doing her own backup singing job was super funny

So, I have always liked this movie. It’s not a work of art, but, honestly, I’ve never seen anything else like it, and it’s got some very good one-liners. Very quick, witty dialogue.
Oh, and PS, that joke Tim Curry made about J Edgar Hoover being on everyone’s phones is because he used to be the head of the FBI, and it was an open secret that he was illegally wire-tapping like…everyone.

Quick wit and quips that you have to be paying attention to get. haha

When I was in my early 20s and going through the whole “these are the best films and here are my guilty pleasures,” I found it difficult to categorize Clue. I too felt it was overall very well-done. But obviously critics very much disagreed, so… did I have a bias? Or was everyone just expecting something different when they saw it in the 80s? I would reason that it really just comes down to what kind of comedy it was emulating - which “went out of style” in America 3-4 decades prior. Clue and other films like it brought wit, sarcasm, and slapstick back (as did a few tv shows).
Late 90s and early 00s tv drama-comedies started incorporating the style too. (I watched an insane number of tv shows from this period. The style of writing and unique concepts were strong!)

You have to realize that at the time that this movie was supposed to take place, being gay was a major problem. Especially if you worked on anything top secret.
Also, the singing telegram girl was Jane Wiedlin from the Go-Gos. A Poplar 80's group of the time.

I was a theatre rat in high school, specifically the crew. I'm an illustrator now as an adult so as you can imagine I did a LOT of stuff for productions like designing the crew shirts, set pieces, show programs, advertising, just about anything that needed a custom visual. On top of being the Head of Crew, I also ran the light board.
The last production I was involved in was our own version of _Clue_ based on this movie and holy god it was _SO MUCH FUN._
The guy who played our Wadsworth was absolutely perfect for the role, and he had a rapid fire "solution" monologue just like in the movie. He had struggled with it all through rehearsals aka "hell week", but on opening night when we usually had the production filmed, he NAILED it and all of us in the crew were THRILLED for him because the audience went nuts when he was done because it was THAT impressive. I had a headset with a mic to coordinate my crew from my place at the light board in the back of the theater, and I heard a slew of _whispered_ cheering in my ear when he finished that monologue as we all celebrated as much as we were allowed while still keeping quiet in the wings!😂
It's a story that's only tangentially related to this video at best, but it's a really happy, special memory for me that I think of every time I see this movie and sharing it helps boost engagement for y'all with the algorithm so it's a win-win! 😉
That was a great story. Thank you for sharing this. Reminds me of my time in theater in middle school backstage and even a little acting my final year. It's always an amazing time when the production comes together on opening night. Man, that was a fun time. haha

The J. EDGAR HOOVER joke was in reference that he actually tapped a lot people's phone lines back in the 50s when he and the FBI were searching for communists or suspected communists.

This movie is good for a variety of reasons.
1. Excellent plot/writing.
2. Excellent delivery.
3. Snappy lines.
4. The slow build-up and the speedy send off.
It's well known for the play on words and comedic interactions. Madeline Khan who played Mrs.White is also in alot of Mel Brooks films.
Brilliant writing and acting.
I've watched this movie so many times growing up. Once I saw Tim Curry, I fell in love with him as an actor. The movie is so silly that it makes it funny. Glad you enjoyed it.

My family randomly stumbled upon this movie at Blockbuster (remember those?) once when I was a kid, and it quickly became a family favorite. Now I work as a librarian, and I created an escape room based on this that we're going to do at my library next month. 😄

I got the impression when I was younger that this was a mediocre film because it got played on TV over and over. It's clearly fantastic though. And I think I appreciate it more and more every time I see it, or see someone react to it. The story is so well crafted, the dialogue is excellent, the cast is excellent, the production design is excellent, the audio is excellent, the characters are excellent. It's a near perfect dark comedy film. All based on a board game! Of course that really does depend on the home video release with all 3 endings; the rather poor reviews for the theatrical versions make sense when you imagine this movie with only one of its endings attached.
This has always been one of my favorite movies, a great cast & many memorable hilarious lines.

Clue is one of my favorite movies. Mrs White's lines about the flames consuming her are gold. Also, I love how much you guys enjoyed Mrs Peacock screaming. I love finding new little things to laugh at every time I watch.
I LOVE this movie!! I watch it multiple times a year. I love Tim Curry , he is fabulous in everything he is in. Y’all should add Legend to your list of movies to watch. Tim Curry as Darkness was fantastic & there is a young Tom Cruise in it too.
The dialogue and the delivery of the dialogue are really what makes this film so so good and helped it to stand the test of time. And the score is excellent too.
Dang I love this film. Everyone in it was wonderful. I saw this in the theatre when I was 7 and I've been a Tim Curry fan ever since.

There's a setting on the dvd where it would just randomly play one of the 3 endings. It was pretty cool.
Hoover was known for spying and collecting information about everyone, that's what he meant about being on everyone else's phone.
This became a cult hit because it was one of the first VHS tapes that almost everyone ended up having
“Murder by Death” is the best murder mystery spoof! This harkens back to a time when screenplay writers really had talent! The populace read or listened to the radio because there was no tv.
You guys are knocking it out of the park! Absolutely love Clue and loved watching you guys be confused for half the movie but grow to appreciate the absurd comedy and quick witted dialog. This movie is amazing but so camp, every actor was just going all out on the crazy and it is such a joy to watch.

I've been watching this movie for decades now and I laugh just as much every single time. I feel like I always see something I never noticed before. There's so much going on, the dialogue is funny but there's so much physical comedy too. And not just in the sort of slapstick sense, but just in the expressions and the way they look at each other. Like when Miss Scarlett scowls when she realizes she's paired with Colonel Mustard for the search, or the way they carefully hold up those matchsticks against each other even when one is obviously three times longer than the other. So much absurdity and impeccable comic performances.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Tim Curry 4ever!!

Tim Curry really steals the show in just about any movie he is in. He was also over the top funny in the Three Musketeers movie that has Kiefer Sutherland, and Charlie Sheen. Just too damn funny. He is also the scariest damn clown as Pennywise in IT.
Howard Hessman (who played the “Chief” at the end) just passed recently; RIP.
And THIS is one of my favorite comedies! Also, nice that we’re back in a time when the Perry Mason reference has become relevant again 😄

They were considered about doing a reboot of the film with Ryan Reynolds as Colonel Mustard, and rather be a murder mystery, it was supposed to be a globe trotting adventure film like Indiana Jones.
Production was halted as of 2010.

If you like quick witted comedy, look up "Noises Off" '92 with Carol Burnett and Michael Caine. It's based off of a real play of the same name by Michael Frayn.

I was also going to recommend Noises off. It is brilliant, and you can watch it over and over, and really appreciate the amazing writing and direction.

I saw "Noises Off" on stage. The only major play I've ever gone to. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen. I laughed so hard my sides literally hurt by the end. I loved the way it started slow and continually kept building up to total chaos by the third act. I've seen the movie. It was good, but suffered somewhat by consequence of being on screen. On stage you could see all the various things happening simultaneously.
I was 11 when this came out and I saved my allowance every week to go to the theatre on Saturday to see it. Many times. Absolutely Love it. Great beautiful house too!

I just watched this movie myself, and I have to say, this movie is the definition of the word complicated.

you should also watch Murder by Death. Parodies of the classic movie detectives are all in an old mansion solving a murder. Mrs. Peacock is the hard-boiled detective's sexy secretary. 70's movie with many big-name actors at the time.

Being gay in the time period the movie was set in, while not necessarily illegal everywhere, was a reason to pay blackmail so you didn't lose your job and get shunned.
Favorite line: I hated her so much...flames..flames...😂🤣 and that entire thing was ad libbed my Madeline Kahn.
At the time this was a cast packed with current or up and coming stars.
I've seen this video twice and the movie lots of times and I just noticed when Yvette is speaking her last words, she's speaks with an American accent. So either the actress messed up or she's pretending to be French. Which makes it even better
The joke about J. Edgar being on "everybody else's [phone]" is because Hoover was *notorious* for ordering the phones of "dissidents" tapped - and by "dissidents", I mean people he thought were being disruptive.
Going into Clue with no idea what you're going into is a gift. I got to experience that back in the 90s - rented it on VHS (those old $7 for 7 days for 7 movies deals were *such* a great way to discover new-to-you movies!) and had exactly this good of a time. Still love seeing new people discover it the same way!

At 38:22, the film actually goes even FURTHER, INTO BEING BOARD GAME ACCURATE. Not only do all the secret passages in the film lead between the same locations as on the board, the rooms are actually introduced to the audience as the show up on the game board in clockwise order!! Finally in theaters, each theater only showed ONE ENDING. Not all three. So if two people saw the same film at different theaters, they'd walk away thinking that the film had totally different endings ANNNND in the local newspaper, they had printed clues so that audiences could guess who would be guilty at the end/which ending was going to be shown!!!!!
Also there was originally a FOURTH ENDING, where Wattsworth killed them all, in order to gain even greater control over them. That's why the third ending isn't technically possible. But they deleated the ending and made it only just 3 instead.

I saw it in a theater and my multiplex in New York played all three options. You bought an A, B or C ticket which designated the auditorium the specific ending was featured in.
I bought the VHS and then the DVD. I must have seen this film over thirty times! It never gets old.
Tim Curry gives a tour-de-force performance as Wadsworth. The cast are all comedy greats in perfect sync with each other. It's a wonderful little gem.
There's been talk of a remake but this is a lightning-in-a-bottle situation like "Ghostbusters" or "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!" A different cast would change the dynamic completely.
Another good comedic whodunnit is "Murder By Death" which features parodies of the great cinematic sleuths like Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles, Sam Spade, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple gathered together by real-life true-crime author Truman Capote.
Trivia unrelated to the production: Lesley Ann-Warren and Susan Sarandon have been mistaken for each other so often in real life that the actresses agreed to sign autographs using their doppelganger's name if erroneously requested by fans!
Absolutely love this movie. Used to watch it on VHS !
The charm of this film is in how theatrical it is, with all the physical comedy and clever wordplay and delivery and interactions among the cast. Don’t overthink it; just enjoy it. Usually when I watch this I immediately want to watch Noises Off, which also has those elements I mentioned but with less murder.

Mr. Green is played by Michael McKean . Wonderful actor with that dry delivery.. He also played "Lenny" in the Laverne and Shirley show.. Quite the musical career too with Spinal Tap.

It's crazy to think that this movie didn't do well at all during its theatrical release. It was definitely ahead of it's time! Great Reactions BTW!
Such a great movie! I fell in love with Tim Curry because of it. This was my favorite movie until "The Crow" came out. Michael McKean, Mr. Green, who has a very large filmography now, was probably best known for his role of "Lenny" in Laverne & Shirley (a Happy Days spinoff) in the 70s when this came out.
A truly great 1980’s film (It’s a real shame it bombed at the time) it was to ahead of its time i said it countless times Quentin Tarantino must’ve loved this flick (The dialogue in Clue is so whip smart and manic you see that same type of dialogue in a number of early Tarantino films! There’s a reason Clue has a massive cult following 👍❤️👍
As a kid in the 80s, I loved this movie. We wore out a couple VHS copies.
The reason y'all haven't heard of it is because it wasn't a commercial or critical hit. The main reason is the ending showed in theaters was different for each viewing. They didn't add all three endings until VHS release and that's when the film gained a loyal cult following.
The Mr. Green ending, he says he's a plant. He's's an FBI agent who took the place of the real blackmail victim in order to catch Mr. Body.
I prefer the final ending, and wish they made one or 2 other endings. Would've been interesting to see
