I love this movie, but it bombed because it only came with one of three ending and you didn't know which you would get. The director didn't make another film until My Cousin Vinny. Tim Curry has been in a ton from Rocky Horror, Legend, The Hunt for Red October. "Flames, on the sides of my face," was a Madeline Kahn (Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles) adlib.
Tim Curry was a fantastic actor, so sad to see his body fail him so early Iconic performances in this to IT and The Rocky Horror Picture Show to name a few of my favourites

@@bespectacledheroine7292 part of the issue with the release of this movie is that all 3 endings were split between prints, in an attempt to encourage people to go see it at a different theater to see a different ending. the final release to VHS and HBO had all 3 endings, and that's really what got it to its cult status.
The game involved a selection of people, locations in the house, and weapons. One of each was placed in a small envelope as the actual details of the crime to be solved. Players traveled to locations on the game board to find clues and win through the process of elimination. Pretty fun game and very well adapted into this movie.
And to piggy back on this, play involved being one of the players/characters and moving from room to room to suggest solutions and if the other players had that card, they would show you the "clue." To win the game you have to accuse your final answer with the phrase "It was Miss Scarlett in the library with the revolver" (or whatever it is) which makes the "Mr Body in the hall with the revolver" more funny. It's quite literally in the rule book.
The setup was three sets of cards. Characters, rooms and murder weapons. One set was placed in a envelope unknown to anyone. With the remaining cards dealt face down to the players.

One thing that I think gets lost over time with Clue is that - in addition to being based on the board game - it was also meant to be a throwback to the witty patter of screwball comedies, which I guess was way more popular decades before. I think going into it knowing that they were trying to do something very different for the time, and that it was going to be silly, helps one to appreciate it. (I'm someone who believes it's not necessarily better to watch something completely cold.)
Some fun facts: Madeline Khan's line of "flames on the side of my face" were ad-libbed and everyone's reaction was genuine, Carrie Fisher was originally slated to play Ms. Scarlet but had to drop out due to rehab, and the singing telegram girl was the guitarist for The Go-Go's
And their reactions were actually "why are they letting her go off on an ad lib?" because it's literally the only words in the entire movie off script. They were super strict about ad libbing. And as funny as it is, there's a reason. They wanted the snappy old school fast banter dialogue. And it is hilarious, but it does kinda not fit. She's stumbling over her words and trailing off, etc. If they had let any other adlibs stay, those moments would have stuck out more. So yeah, on re-watch see how their reactions of "what the fuck?" also apply to "what the hell is going on?" because Kahn had managed to convince Lynn (director) to let her do that or else the take would have been cut as soon as she had gone off script.
Oh my gosh, I was introduced to this as a child and it’s been one of my favorites movies since. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rewatched it. It’s not so much a guilt pleasure, because it’s not a bad film. But, I love every second of this movie and I always will. Thanks for reacting. The board game is fun too.
the way wandsworth looks at the papers after green said he was gay always gets me almost like he's supprised and he's actually being blackmailed for something else
The movie tried to capture the essence of the board game by having multiple endings, as if anyone could have done it like the board game. So during it's original theatrical release, each screening might be a different ending (labelled Ending A, Ending B, or Ending C). The only way you would know which ending you're watching in advance is if you looked at the schedule in the newspaper, where they would label which Ending a specific showtime will be screening. When the movie was released to home video or TV broadcast, they ended up merging all 3 endings into the cut we see today. But in the original theatrical run, it only showed one of the 3 endings, and was meant to get people to go see it multiple times.
I think the money people did it for that reason, but I suspect the artists did it to troll people into arguing with their friends who saw a different version.
@@steviekc9057 Yup, I tried the same thing. I saw A and C in the theater, but neither I, nor anybody else that I knew, saw B until it came out on video. Strange.
Dude! Tim Curry is an absolute legend. You can always tell a person's age and personality from how they know Tim Curry. From Dr Frank n furter in rocky horror. Pennywise in IT. Darkness in legend. He's a true chameleon and has some given life to some of the most iconic characters in film.
For me it is Wadsworth from Clue and Dr Thornton Poole from the movie Oscar. An underrated little gem of a comedy, Sylvester Stallone is a Prohibition era mob boss trying to leave his life of crime behind and shenanigans abound. There's a fantastic supporting cast including Marissa Tomei, Tim Curry is top notch as the nerdy and clueless elocution instructor (because you gotta learn how to talk good if you wanna be a banker). Highly recommended.
When I say this is one of my favorite movies, I do not exaggerate, the filming, directing and actors are just phenomenal. And you neeeeeeed to go to a Goodwill, find a Clue game (there are many) and play man!! I literally collect different Clue games so I literally gasped (lol) when you said you hadn’t played the game before! Finally, your reactions are awesome!!
I totally agree!! It's hard to believe there is someone out there who has not heard of the game Clue. That was our favorite game growing up. And this movie is one of my all time favorites. I never tire of watching it. :)
This movie is one of my personal favourites, the jokes, the wit, the chemistry of the cast, Tim Curry, all made it amazing and something that I like to watch all the time
This movie is so fun. I actually saw it in theater with just one of the endings. I don't remember which one it was because I watched it so many times on VHS after that.
I saw Ms. Scarlet first and was desperate to find out the others. Finally got some cash out of my Dad to see it one more time, and got Mrs. Peacock. Spoilers and bragging rights were abound at school, so you can imagine how exciting it was when I finally got to see the third and "real" ending on VHS
@@steviekc9057 I was a bit too young to see it in the theatres, but it was one of my favorites growing up watching on VHS. Though I can admit now most of the jokes are corny AF. They only work as well as they do because the actors sell them hard.
The dude you've seen before is none other than MR. TIM CURRY....THE LEGEND HIMSELF, Pennywise the Clown, Doctor Frank n Furter, The Lord of Darkness and of course... Wadsworth. 😁
One of the best, and, funniest ensemble movies ever made! The cast is just stupendous. Martin Mull Christopher Lloyd, Madeline Kahn, Tim Curry, Lee Ving, from Fear... just amazing!
Back in the 90s, I saw Fear at the old 9:30 club in DC, and I met Lee....he was very taken aback ny this one nerd girl geeking out over his role in Clue while every other punk rocker there was worshipping him for being a punk legend.🤣🤗 one of my favorite memories. He was like "you saw that?" 😁😁😁 Saw it? I memorized it.
HOLY S**T! I only just realized Mrs Peacock is in both Clue AND Murder By Death! I can't believe all these years I never noticed that, being a fan of both for like 30ish yrs, that's embarrassing! 😅
So small detail I love in the final ending, is that Mr Green is actually the "guilty" one according to how the board game works. In the board game, each player picks a character (professor plum, miss scarlet, etc) and has to try to figure out who killed Mr Body, in what room and with what weapon. Each room, character and weapon has a card. the decks are shuffled and a card from each category is picked at random and put in an envelope, the rest of the cards are dealt to each player. If the cards are in your hand, you know it's not the answer in the envelope. You roll a die to move around the board game and go to the different rooms of the house. A couple rooms have "secret passages" which you saw in the film, which allow you to hop across the board faster. When you're in a room, you can make a suggestion of what's in the envelope. It goes around clockwise, whoever can prove you wrong has to show you the card and you now can eliminate that from your notes. Eventually through process of elimination, if you think you know the answer, you make an actual accusation of who, where and with what weapon. You check the envelope. If you're wrong, you are eliminated. If you're right, you've won the game. But, to repeat, the goal of the game is to find out who killed Mr Body, where and with what, so ultimately in the last ending the answer is Mr. Green, in the Hall, with the Revolver which is why he said it like that
This movie holds up for repeat viewings once you realize and accept the madness. The writing is clever but it’s the performances that make it endlessly enjoyable. And actually, your Norm MacDonald comparison is brilliant and totally makes sense. The movie works on that same level.

We've been watching this since 1985 in the theater in my family. I've seen it too many times to count. The cast are all stellar well-known actors, including Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Leslie Warren, Martin Mull. Even the singing telegram girl was a singer with the group, The Go-gos. It was played as the game goes where you have to find who the killer was, what weapon was used and where in what room. It was such a fun movie with Class A actors. And do you hear Madeline/Mrs. White in the group singing She's a Jolly Good Fellow and riffing on it? That became a joke in our house for years!
Now that you've seen this murder mystery comedy, you need to see another classic along the same line. Murder by Death (1976) is a great comedy that deconstructs all the most famous murder solving sleuths from literature. I highly recommend that comedy classic that is great underappreciated.
You probably recognise Tim Curry from Home Alone 2 (receptionist), But he is also famous for playing Pennywise in the original IT, and ofc Dr.Frankenfurter in "Rocky Horror Picture show"

Madeline Khan forgot her lines, and started improvising. The reaction to her doing the "flames, flames" thing is real. The other actors had no idea what she was doing.
I love the attention to detail. Mustard tells Scarlet to check behind the curtain while he checks the kitchen. But later we see then both checking the kitchen. And while him getting hit is funny, it also makes it clear he definitely did not check out the kitchen when he said he was going to.
The butler is Tim Curry. He was Dr. Frankenfurter from Rocky Horror Picture Show. He played "Pennywise the Clown" from the 1989 Stephen King adaptation IT. Among many others.
20:23 Dude! You’re not familiar with Tim Curry?! You haven’t seen/heard him in Rocky Horror Picture Show, It (1990), Ferngully, Home Alone 2, The Pebble and the Penguin, Muppet Treasure Island, Disney’s The Three Musketeers (1993), Anne (1982), or The Hunt For Red October?!
"Flames! On the side of my face! Breathing.... heaving breaths.." I miss Madeline. She ad-libbed that when she forgot her line and they kept it because obviously.
The Butler , played by Tim Curry, is brilliantly cast. He also starred in the70' s iconic films The Rocky Horror Picture Show as Dr. Frankenfurter then was cast as, you guessed it, the Dr. In The Hunt for Red October.
"I'm getting a particular 'Knives Out' feel." Funny you mention that. Knives Out mimics a lot of the 1970s/1980s murder mysteries, and for the interiors of the Thrombey house, the floors have the same patterns used from the Clue board game (which the set for the house in this film also uses). Knives Out actually draws a lot of influence from films like Clue, Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and it's sequel Death on the Nile (1978). Also, when it comes to Mr. Green and him being gay, the film's setting is the 1950s, where being gay was actually frowned upon. Yes, it's not something to be ashamed of, but due to the historical context of the 1950s, being gay was something a gay man could be fired for. In fact, a lot of classic Hollywood leading men and women in the 1930s-1950s were gay, but they had to put up the front that they were straight in order to keep their careers. Quite sad, actually. But a lot of people who have done reaction videos for this film all have the same kind of reaction but are unaware of the historical context of the film's period setting. The film's endings were originally planned with each of the group having their own ending to reveal they were the killer. However, it was trimmed down to four being filmed, which itself got cut down to three that you see (the ending that was filmed but cut involved Wadsworth/Mr. Boddy having poisoned everyone with the brandy and they all die, with Wadsworth himself getting killed by the dogs when the police show up as he attempts to flee). Each ending you also see was actually edited into various versions and released into theatres, meaning that each showing had one of them. So, there are some who saw it was only Mrs. Peacock, some that see it was Ms. Scarlet, and some that saw the ending where it was only the entire group who did it. Debra Hill, who was the producer of this film, was also the producer and co-writer of the iconic slasher film Halloween (1978).
All of the running from room to room reminded me of another one you might like 'Noises Off', a movie from 1992 about a cast for a stage play with multiple issues. Half of it is set backstage during performances as things fall apart and it has a great all star cast.
@James: Clue was a board game that was very popular in the 70’s and 80’s, well, until video games hit the market. These characters are named after the characters in the board game. In the game there are cards that represent either rooms that are possible locations for the “murder” (eg: the Conservatory, the Library, the Billiard Room, etc), weapons (eg: candlestick, rope, knife, revolver, etc), and suspects (eg: Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green, etc). At the beginning of the game, three cards are removed, one from each category (location, weapon, suspect) and placed in an envelope and put in the middle of the board. As the game progresses, questions can be asked, guesses can be made, and ultimately the winner correctly guesses from the clues provided ‘who dun it’. It was a fun game. You should actually try to play it with friends one of these days :) As a side note, there is no “Mr. Body” in the game, well, at least not that I can remember. (and there was no butler or maid or cook or anything like that)
Mr. Body is infact the dead person in the boardgame. Though in the UK version his name is Mr. Black. Miss White in the game (or at least the orignial/ version I had as a kid) was the maid. Also Green was a Rev originally. The game has been updated to add and remove characters and channel their titles.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. There is no new one. Theyve been talking about doing a reboot with Ryan Reynolds as Wadsworth but it's been stuck in development hell for years.
Fun fact: The actor playing Mr. Body is the lead singer of a punk band called Fear. His name is Lee Ving. John Belushi got them invited on to Saturday Night Live, as they were one of his favorites, but they trashed the stage and were hard to deal with apparently, and were banned from ever returning. @@JamesVSCinema Yugioh is probably a better game - Clue was invented in 1949 so it uses a few tropes that people probably wouldn't do if they designed a modern boardgame, like the rolling to move between rooms. If you want a game to play with a group of adults, there is Deception: Murder in Hong Kong, which is a huge amount of fun - one player is the forensic scientist who has to give other players vague clues about how a murder was committed. Another player is the murderer, who is also a cop and the game is basically trying to work out which player the Forensic Scientist is trying to point out, while the murderer is trying to convince the other players to accuse the wrong people ua-cam.com/video/hhT7fbkvj3w/v-deo.html

I love Wadsworth's reaction to Green's confession. He's totally like, "That's not what I was blackmailing you for," when he's checking his papers.
Not really, that’s just a fan theory. In my opinion he just looks scandalized.
I mean, if that’s not why he is blackmailing him then why would he keep the secret? Everyone else is forced to confess…
Tim Curry is one of my personal favourite actors. He was smoochin with everybody.

Ahhhh that’s interesting. Yeah I was pretty surprised by the three endings, but with this context, it makes sense.
I think the money people did it for that reason, but I suspect the artists did it to troll people into arguing with their friends who saw a different version.
@@JamesVSCinema trust that seeing all three endings was my 11 year-old LIFE'S GOAL - for like, a whole summer. Also, I failed. hahah

Different type of movie but she's also great in "Private Benjamin" with Goldie Hawn.
Eileen Brennan was always hilarious.✨️

CLUE is a great re-watch, you pick up more and see more each time.

You're right about Tim Curry. He does seem to give every role his all. It's why I love him as an actor.
All of the running from room to room reminded me of another one you might like 'Noises Off', a movie from 1992 about a cast for a stage play with multiple issues. Half of it is set backstage during performances as things fall apart and it has a great all star cast.
This, while being based on the game, is deeply inspired by the movie Murder by Death.
Tim Curry, the Butler is an all time icon.
I love this movie, it's a hilarious spoof of Agatha Christie-type murder mysteries. Definitely underrated these days.

@@JamesVSCinema Yugioh is probably a better game - Clue was invented in 1949 so it uses a few tropes that people probably wouldn't do if they designed a modern boardgame, like the rolling to move between rooms. You could spend turns trying to get to a room to make a guess which slowed down the game a bit too much for some folks. A boardgame channel I follow have a play through using an app

There is a game that uses some of the Clue/Cluedo's DNA to make an actually good game, Awkward Guests, but if you have a younger family (I'd say kids about 8 years old or so) you might want to try Small Detectives or Stop Thief instead which are two other deduction games.
If you want a game to play with a group of adults, there is Deception: Murder in Hong Kong, which is a huge amount of fun - one player is the forensic scientist who has to give other players vague clues about how a murder was committed. Another player is the murderer, who is also a cop and the game is basically trying to work out which player the Forensic Scientist is trying to point out, while the murderer is trying to convince the other players to accuse the wrong people
