There is no right way. Decide why you will make certain choices, and enjoy the outcomes.
You just need to decide if you are self inserting, and following your own logic, or actually roleplaying.
Then you choose what your character would decide. I find that more fun.

Thanks for saying all this. Since the game awards, some of the groups and forums and influencers are getting downright toxic about viewing and playing THEIR way.. It's awesome to hear a voice of reason in amongst all the judgemental rhetoric. It's a really special game and it deserves to be enjoyed the way the PLAYER enjoys it. This is unironically the way. Do what feels right to you and commit. Maybe a little pre planning like tutorials on character creation etc but once you start just play and don’t worry about it. Ignorance is bliss. Let the world organically evolve. If you really like the game you’ll end up beating it the. playing through again the 2nd time around you’ll actually know how and when to min/max specific builds rather than reloading constantly and being paralyzed by choice.

One of the most fun interesting ways to play games like this is to "roll the dice". Roll it for appearance. Roll it for race. Roll it for class. Attributes. Skills. Level ups. Not only does it alleviate you from trying to play "perfect", it adds unique challenge, a unique character, rolplaying that you wouldn't normally consider. If you're a bit burned out, try it, it's like it's own roguelike version of the game.

    • @threewiseman1

I did this and wound up with a Drow Rogue (didn't do it with appearance, but the basic race and class).
Turned out awesome. Drow was not a race I would have otherwise gravitated towards, but I stuck with it and was overjoyed when I got the chance to tell a child that the rumour that drow enslave children was ridiculous, "We murder way more children than we enslave" 😂

Great for you that you started playing hopefully with the right mentality right away. For me that wasn't the case. I restarted my campaing like 4/5 times before commiting to one and even then I was constantly respeccing hoping for the perfect build. Now I'm doing honour mode where min-maxing is pretty encouraged but right after finishing honour I am doing a more laid back playthrough with roleplay as the priority.

As a longtime ttrpg players, I absolutely loved how even "bad" picks like Trickery Domain Cleric were absolutely 100% viable in the game even on harder difficulties. The roleplaying aspect is also extremely good, I think Larian really nailed the feel the ttrpg has and successfully translated it in videogame form.

I made a Deep Gnome Bardbarian recently and it’s probably far from the most optimal thing in the world but it genuinely might be the most fun I’ve had so far. It also made me realize how useful Gnome Cunning is, you almost never get affected by Tasha’s Hideous Laughter or Hold Person and it occasionally comes in handy outside of combat.

Everyone plays Warlocks as female tieflings. I made a highelf as an Archfey warlock and had a ton of fun with her. I loved those moments when the narrator went like „You hear a faint giggle…“. I believe the best situation was with Dribbles and my patron basically told me,,that clown is evil …. All in all my characters decisions were chaotic neutral, with a tendency towards good at best. Funny side effect, i saw Astarion approve a lot of her chaotic or just fun decisions. I was like „Wtf Astarion? You weird little ball of chaos?“. I never saw him liking any of my characters as much as this one. So even though I’m not exactly an Astarion romancer, i went with it for once. I let the romance just roll ❤ :D

This video was a perfect wake up call for me personally. I had started about 10 play throughs and ended them prematurely seeing all the cool things other characters got access too and ended up switching to that certain class or build, and starting the cycle all over again. Coincidentally, I also do this a lot in 5e DND and it makes my friends really upset about how I wish to change characters mid campaign. Thank you so much for making this video and allowing me to step back a second and realize that fun should be the most important part of a GAME rather than mid-maxing and analyzing the best routes or angles.
Side Note: really enjoying watching your Honor mode run as well :)

If you miss the old 70's D&D rules, Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous are two video games, similar in style... older graphics, but still similar in style to Baldur's Gate 3... based on the D&D 1e rules instead of the updated 5e rules. They're Real Time with Pause combat, but there's an option to set it to turn based in the options and it works well. I'm not a video gamer either, just missed D&D and started with Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are also excellent games in this vein.

It also helps a ton to not view any media until you have finished the game . Unless you are stuck on a quest than sure look up how to do it, but googling your first build to make your character the best, or which feats are the best is the wrong way to play the first time around IMO, my first playthough I played a simple character (Fighter) as I was really new to D&D, and CRPG's. This video is great. The best part of playing a D&D style game is the role playing. I go way back to 2nd ed. pen & paper AD&D: Fiend Folio, Monster Manuals 1 & 2, etc. I can't yet speak to the harder modes, I've only played on balanced so far, but you really can't go wrong with any build; unless you minimize the prime stat. I'm currently running both (2 concurrent play thrus) a Gith Monk and a Drow rogue assassin. I love Drow and rogues. I have re-spec'd Shadowheart and Gale at Withers. You can tailor a lot of the BG3 experience to make it more enjoyable to play. This video plainly lays out how truly easy it is to role play whatever you like and change it if you find you don't like it. Happy BG3 gaming everyone.

i was definitely feeling some stagnancy when creating my monks (even though i loved it the first time i played as one)! it seems like every single build guide on here is so focused on min-maxing (using wood elf/half elf, dumping strength to buy strength potions for the rest of the game, dumping dexterity to use the gloves of dexterity, etc.) and i felt so bad at the game for not liking that sort of playstyle
i watched your radiant monk build recently and i absolutely fell in love with it! the moment you were setting up the ability points and didn't talk about dumping strength or dex i knew i was hooked
your builds have the perfect balance between being very strong and very fun, with no extreme obsession with creating the perfect min-maxed character, and it really helped me enjoy the game again 💛

I think your last point is super important, it really helps to just roll along with the punches and accept your fate. Someone I know was talking about how tedious BG3 is, but then I learned that they save-scum every single encounter and re-roll until it favors them, or try every option in a dialog tree until they get the desired outcome, etc. Of course that's tedious! I think part of the fun is letting the game take you on a ride, and it really enhances replayability because next time you play the game you'll have different outcomes.

Same Durge Tiefling Paladin with oath of vengeance is so fun to play. My problem isn’t really stressing with choices, but the fact that most of the sidequests are so easily missable if you don’t explore every single corner of the map. My biggest stress is accidentally moving onto act 2 before even getting to everything i wanted to do.

This video was needed before all of these build videos came out. As someone who came into this game with no knowledge of D&D I felt like I had to watch these build videos just to understand how to build a character. Most games have obvious weak classes and there was no way I would have thought this game would be different
My first playthrough I quit once I got to Rivington because I just didn’t like the choices I made And that was due to me just not understanding how the game works.
While I agree with this video 100% I needed all of those build guides just so I can know how to get the best out of my build. I’m hindsight tho I think watching all of these builds just confused me more. If I had to tell someone else who is just getting into this game I would tell them to not listen to not one other person about this game and just go in blind. Because while I was playing I had people tell me I was moving too fast or I missed stuff. The people that wanted me to 100% the game on one run were not helpful. I was fully expecting to disagree with you all the way in this vid, but I actually 100% agree. Weirdly enough, I stopped analyzing so much when I *started my second honour mode run* . Having all back up plans ripped out of my hands if I wanted to progress after a missed roll, mistake, or trashed path to BIS items was weirdly freeing!!
It was so strange, because my first attempt at HM was researched to the Nth, planned to the letter, and fell in a screaming heap the second I hit a boss mechanic that wasn't mentioned in the guides. I lost a companion early, missed a bunch of integral gear, and just wasn't strong enough to continue.
This time around, I embraced the chaos, had a goal to make it to the Creche, and decided from the get to to just roll with the punches because I'm an innate healer in a game that doesn't really require a healer as much as it needs great damage, innovation and utility. So, I looked up one single guide to figure out which lore friendly companion classes were best *without end game gear* so I could get HM appropriate damage out of them, and then run in deliberately giving no fucks. The sum total of min-maxing I made, was giving Astarion a few levels of Bard, and changed Shadowheart to a Light cleric after the Gauntlet of Shar to match her new archetype and still do damage WITHOUT all the Shar armour and tweaked their stats so they work for the classes they were born with. It's so AWESOME!! The gear doesn't matter! Literally the only compulsory gear I have was the returning pike/trident for Karlach! Every coloured item drop is exciting because I'm choosing gear on the fly, the build doesn't depend on it.
Lost Lae'Zel, accidentally killed Damon, *found myself romancing Karlach* !! (that was totally out of nowhere lol). I embraced the tadpole from the get-go, and seriously, the game is so different that way! I never would have seen most of the content I've encountered this run, and it's HONOUR MODE!! It's actually fun because I went in KNOWING it was a disposable game. I EXPECTED it to end soon so I treated it the way someone who expected to die before they got the chance to remove the tadpole would... Save the world before I die, nothing else matters.
I dunno, I'm waffling because I never expected to have so much fun on a HM game. It's been AWESOME and I'm just about to go find Orin. If I do die before the end, I'll probably still continue and finish it regardless. I'll probably never do another HM run, but it's definitely changed the way I will view a lot of choices from here out. It's certainly changed the way I view a lot of the companions and NPCs. So much tragedy!! 😭😭🤣🤣😭😭

My biggest issue is that there are a few styles I love, so I try to make a good estimate on how to do that.
One is a caster with a large toolkit. In BG1/2 it would be a dual cleric/mage. With the right buffs it could do well in melee, but with other spells it could offer control or splut.
Yes, it had to re-tool for different areas. But I could tackle anything in any way I felt like, and I enjoyed being able to match the strengths and weaknesses.
