Ibanez RGAIX6U - 2017 Iron Label - Bare Knuckle Aftermaths - Playthrough

  • Up today is my newest purchase: The Ibanez Iron Label RGAIX6U. What makes this instrument so ground-breaking, is that it may well be the first consumer level product to include Bare Knuckle Pickups as standard (If there are any I am aware of from other brands, let me know in the comments below!). With an ash body, maple/ bubinga neck, fantastic ebony board and the stand-out BKP Aftermaths, there is nothing to dislike about the specs of this guitar.
    I've had a great time with it and have been putting off making this video just because I've been having so much fun with it, it was difficult to get in to work mode. I've yet to play another instrument that sounds like this in its price range, so make sure you check it out!
    Coming up soon will be a shoot-out between this and my JBM20, a very similar instrument but with enough differences to justify a comparison video!

      who doesn't love what this is? Its the $1300-1400 price tag (7-string) that's holding some of us back.

    • @alexlucasmusic
      @alexlucasmusic  6 років тому +3

      I would say that at the $300-$400 of that pricing is in the pickups alone, which still leaves you with a pretty fantastic $1000 guitar. I am still of the opinion that this guitar line is the cheapest way to get a brand-new guitar loaded with BKPs into the hands of consumers. I see people referencing Misha's USA Jacksons, or a Fender Custom Shop model as a correction to my comment that this is the first 'consumer-level' product with BKPs. Fact of the matter is that a USA-made or Custom Shop guitar is in no way a consumer level product.

      The Aftermaths have that quality about them, don't they? Where you can just plug in to a high gain amp and get a great sound with little work. The EMG 81 is similar, in that regard.

      Thanks for the kind words, my friend! I'm loving this guitar and it's exactly what I thought it'd be. It's currently proving to be a great counterpart to my JBM20 in the sense that this guitar will handle my panned-left rhythms while the JBM handles the right. Thanks to the BKP Aftermaths in this beast, it's also incredibly versatile for leads and clean parts, too and, as stated earlier, they pair up with the Dimarzio Titans beautifully. Maybe I'll have to do a video covering that topic and why I choose to use them that way.
      The 7 string is identical in terms of specs, so I would imagine it to have a very similar tone with a tad more, but still controlled, low end. As an Ibanez player for the last decade, I'm pretty used to the AANJ joint that they put on virtually all of their guitars. It actually suits me a bit more than set-necks and neck-neck-thrus as it gives you the same access to the upper frets, but with a bit more to hold on to. Try out any modern Ibanez and you'll find this neck joint and I'm sure you, very much like I did, will fall in love with it all the same.
      Bolt-on necks lend themselves to a snappier pick attack, too, so that form of construction lends itself very well to these pickups; ebony fretboards are also known for this quality. The ebony board is great and is a hell of an improvement over ebony I've seen on Ibanez guitars from a few years ago and I expect the Wizard Nitro Neck to handle temperature and climate changes rather well. .
      In terms of quality control, it's all about balance. Due to the price point, you can't expect something like Prestige or J-Custom quality, but I have yet to find a fault. These new Iron Labels are coming out in fantastic shape and with boutique-like specs at a price point I find it hard to complain about. I will say that I've played guitars from other companies at similar market values and have had both negative and positive experiences. Ibanez seem to be very consistent with the level of quality they put out and that will either make you a fan or a detractor.
      Like all new guitar purchases, make sure you take it to a luthier to get a professional, personalised setup. I had this guitar set up with D'Addario 11-56 strings in C#/ DropB and, as you can tell, it does a great job.
      If I had to personalise this guitar further, I'd probably switch the volume control and coil tap switch positions and lose the coil tap switch in favour of a 5-way pickup selector. The empty hole could probably be filled with a bit of black plastic from somewhere like a hardware store. I've grown accustomed over the last year to the not-too-far away volume controls of my JBM20 and RGDIX6MPB and, more recently, JBM27. However, if you're in a live band with no access to things such as a noise gate, having the volume knob close will help with muting the instrument between songs, the position of the pickup selector makes it easy to switch to leads on the neck pickup and the position of the coil tap switch makes it easier to get access to some backed off clean tones.
      Anyway, hope you've enjoyed the read and I hope I've managed to answer any questions you have about the guitar. Go out, find the 7 string variant, give it a try and see if it doesn't win you over!

      thanks for you detailed description. Its really helpful.
      since you ve been a very experienced Ibanez guy...i would like to ask you one more thing. the older Ibanez prestiges before 2010 used to worth as much as this Iron label made in Indonesia guitar. Do you think that its worth investing in this one or try to find a used older prestige guitar?

    • @alexlucasmusic
      @alexlucasmusic  7 років тому +2

      Iordanis P. I think when you go back to 2010 and earlier, you'll find the same guitars but in different colours. All of the RGs had basswood bodies and maple necks. All of the Ss had mahogany bodies and maple necks. When you look at the Ibanez guitars from the last few years, you're looking at more exotic woods and interesting designs. It's like Lee Anderton said, really. Ibanez, from the 2010 mark, went back to being a very metal focussed brand and I applaud them for that. They're bringing guitars to market that are more interesting, of a higher quality and more cost effective than other competing brands.
      If I had to pick up another Ibanez, I'd be looking towards the most recent additions to the Iron Label and Premium line.
      My most recent purchase was the JBM27, but I'd love the 7 string version of this to pair up with it.

    • @alexlucasmusic

      I've seen about 6 versions of this guitar. 2 were prototypes I had a chance to look at just before Christmas, 1 is mine, 1 has been a 6 string in a store, 1 has been another 6 string in a different store and 1 was my friend's 7 string. They've all looked fantastic. To be honest, though, even if they were plain matte black, they'd still be amazing instruments with phenomenal tone and incredible playability.
      If you like these, you absolutely have to check out the JBM20 or JBM27, depending on how many strings you prefer. The JBM27 finally got me to love 7 string playing after 4 years of trying to get in to it! The RGAIX7U has to be my next purchase, if possible!

    • @TomSlickery
      @TomSlickery 7 років тому

      alexlucasmusic yeah,those look nice too. I like the reverse headstock. I dont really care for the grain all going the same way as it shows on these in all of the advertisements. I really think this guitar calls for a neck through design. It would just look awesome. I would feel a lot better about spending this kind of money on it too. I have a schecter c7 hellraiser .I love everything about it except for the neck. I like 7 string but I need a good 6 string . I think I will eventually get an Ibanez 7 . ( much easier on carpal tunnel). I look forward to seeing the comparison video.

      When my fiancee and I first saw the guitar and then saw the catalogue picture, we couldn't believe how badly it had been photographed, in all honesty. As I said, all of the ones we've seen in person have been amazing.
      A neck-thru RGA with Bare Knuckles needs to happen. I'm surprised there hasn't been a LACS or artist signature somewhere.
      My last 7 string was a Schecter Blackjack ATX C-7; a pre-2014 model from before they had the Hipshot bridge. I liked it, but it was too heavy and the pickups (SD Blackouts) didn't do it justice. The JBM27 has everything I've been after in a 7 string for years. That being said, I also have a lot of love for my RGDIX6MPB which is in the same tuning, with the same scale length and string gauges as my JBM27, but without the highest string; Eb, in my case.

    Hey Alex,
    great sound!
    Did you use thicker strings for your current B tuning? Did you have to drill the tuner for thicker strings?
    Cheers
    Tim

    • @alexlucasmusic
      @alexlucasmusic  5 років тому +1

      Hey, Tim. I was using 11-56 gauge for this guitar and felt comfortable between Drop C and Drop B. Admittedly, I felt more comfortable in Drop C with those strings. They had no problem with these tuners and I believe the maximum I’ve used with the Gotohs would be a .64, but I anticipate being able to go thicker.
      Right now, on my Mayones Regius 7, I’m using 10-46+.72 for Drop A.
      On my Duvell Elite 6, I’m using 11-56 in Drop C, but I’ve changed the .56 out for a .60 and the plain steel .19 for a wound .18 gauge. I hope that doesn’t come across as convoluted.
      I enjoy thicker and tighter strings, so I even use the same gauges when playing baritone scale guitars. Some people use 11-56 sets for Drop B, but I prefer 12-60 with the .60 switched out for a .64 gauge. You definitely benefit from a wound 4th string over a plain steel when tuning lower, in my experience.

    Great video! I have the RGAIX7U (7-string) and can vouch for all of the positive things you say about this guitar. I think that Agile Guitars (www.rondomusic.com) at one time offered the option of a Bare Knuckle upgrade on some of their guitars. I hope to be getting my hands on an RGAIX6U in the coming weeks. I also own the RGAIX6FM (DiMarzio Fusion Edge PU's, mahogany body, maple cap) and that is a killer guitar as well. In my opinion the whole Iron Label series is outstanding.

      TheJuvenalis The BKPs will give you a more focussed tone, in my opinion. The Dimarzios in the FM model are great to hold you over until you need to upgrade. On the DiMarzio side, the Titan set would go great in the FM model. The RGAIX6U just needs to be put in your tuning with your strings and it’s ready to go! No customisation needed on this guitar.

      Jeronimo Martinez Fabregas A lack of a tone knob generally makes a guitar easier to use in a live environment as well as improving the brightness of a guitar’s tone. Metal focussed instruments tend to benefit from these. My Mayones Duvell Elite (video coming tomorrow!) has no tone control, but I’ve never needed it.
      Misha Mansoor has the overall best option. His guitars have a tone knob that needs to be pulled up before it is activated. When it’s down, it’s off.
