People are so easily swayed by personal experience and anecdotal evidence. Very few understand statistics, especially when they look at the VAERS stats, not knowing that these reports are well within the incidence of diseases that happen by chance alone.

Most of the general population doesn’t understand the epidemiological definition of “incidence” or the significance of the term “anecdotal”. Most are concrete thinkers and don’t comprehend mathematical/statistical concepts and why they matter. And they don’t realize how little they understand with regard to evaluating the veracity of scientific research. It’s important to connect with them in a personal fashion and respect their experiences and the perceptions of those experiences.

The kind of statistics you mentioned in ”what statistics”.
Do you know how multivariate analysis is applied on covid-19 and vaccine studies? Can you interpret such data? Do you understand the null hypothesis for different ANOVA models?
Do you know ho to perform a t-test or an F-test? Can you tell us about a study on vaccines where it is used and what kind of information that can be extracted?
Do you know how to calculate a standard deviation from a given set of data? Or why there is something called the relative standard deviation?
Do you know what the main difference between a coefficient of variation for a population and for a sample? And why it is so? Ever heard of Partial Least Squares? Have you ever seen it in a study on vaccines to tell us what it does?
Do you anything about matrix calculation rules? Matrix optimizations?
      Etc. etc. etc.

Just for the record, I don’t recall ever hearing medical care providers claim I wouldn’t get Covid if I took the vaccine. What I heard was that it would help ease the overload in hospitals by lessening the signs and symptoms to the point where I probably wouldn’t need ICU if any hospital care at all. I must have chosen different influencers from the ones my anti vax friends picked.

As Dr. Jonathan Howard noted, overhyping vaccines wasn't pro-vaccine - it was pro-stop worrying about COVID-19. Being pro-vaccine requires complete honesty about the present evidence and limits thereof. Not merely about side effects but also effectivity.
It is unsurprising, then, that those who overhyped vaccines were celebrity anti-lockdown (and occasionally even anti-vaxx) doctors such as Dr. Vinay Prasad.

That's because there is no such thing as a vaccine that completely prevents infection.
I had all the childhood vaccines but still ended up with mild cases of both measles and mumps. Basically just time off where I got to stay home and play in my room, until the symptoms subsided. The vaccines prevented my cases from being worse.

An amazing perspective from your guest, thank you! "Natural" parenting advice is a stereotypical source of anti-vaxx beliefs. But it is fascinating that the pressure to breastfeed and errors in communication on the part of healthcare providers is what brought Ms. Greene to such a community.
I don't doubt that she has only ever wanted the best for her children, and it is heartwarming that she has now found it.
Trust is hard to gain and extremely easy to lose. You can spend years building it, and a single incident is sufficient to wipe all this effort away. It doesn't help that anti-vaxxers fabricate more such incidents to get worried parents onboard.
    Thanks again!

Thanks for this. I really appreciate it. It also points out the dangers of such grifters as Depak Chopra who leaches off of people ignorance of a topic by using terms that people don't understand in ways that misleads them. There seems to be more and more of them scouring the fringes of knowledge to make use of things that sound advanced, lending a sense of awe to their victims. Probably what happened with Lydia's group who were earnestly interested in protecting themselves, and probably was misled by such grifters that spread such nonsense. And, yes, we do need intermediaries who can communicate with the general public. Good of you to reach out. Thanks to you and Lydia.

Funny how some anti-vaxxers say that the "narrative is crumbling" where in fact, like all conspiracy theories, anti-vaxx beliefs rely on pure faith and parroting talking points that you must never question.
Ms. Greene is not the first ex-anti-vaxxer to describe the movement as a cult, and for good reason, it seems. She started asking inconvenient questions instead of continuing to believe things someone wrote just because they wrote them.

Thank you for this hopeful discussion.
So glad your daughter received her Hib vaccine, Lydia.
My daughter read Wakefield’s article 20+ years ago, became a total anti vaxxer and did not vaccinate her two children, which horrified me. (She’s called me old school, naive, a sheep, and uneducated. But she doesn’t remember Robby and Erin, two of my childhood friends, the former never to run again because of polio, the latter dead at age 12 from measles induced encephalitis. I’m 76)
By the time he was 3, my grandson-her older son-was obviously autistic. When he was 5, his little brother, age 18 months, contracted Hib and very nearly died.He actually looked dead, was unconscious with his face distorted and eyes lost in mounds of purple swelling. While he was in the hospital, the immunologist there had a good discussion with her and my daughter finally agreed to get her sons vaccinated. I was so relieved!
But then my niece, another antivaxxer, was telling everyone my older grandson was autistic due to receiving vaccinations. Even after I disabused her of this, and even after my daughter went through all that with her younger son, they both remain deeply entrenched in the anti-vax movement. I can only compare it to a cult religion, as it is not based on evidence at all, evidence that came up and smacked my daughter right between the eyes. (And she has a PhD from Cambridge University!) Both women are wild about RFK Jr.and would vote for him, They think he’d be great as head of the CDC, too. A lawyer!!
I think he’s more like a Jim Jones. Call me naive.

You've outlined the reason why the anti-vaxx movement is bound to fail once it deceives enough parents. Such scenes of horror witnessed first-hand cannot be distorted by the popular demagogues.

I am really glad you pointed out your child has autism and hadn’t been vaccinated until almost 5. I’m sure that’s a difficult thing for the anti-vax community to let sink in. I think it’s amazing that you came this far and are raising a child with autism coming from a community who will try and pin that on vaccines and/or western medicine practices. You pointed quite affirmatively how one could go down a natural path and land in the rabbit hole (not that all natural paths lead their but some do)
All I’m trying to say here is that your volume of great info, and your powerful story was not lost on me, however those points at the end are also important and were glossed over because of wrapping up- not a crime imo but nonetheless could be helpful for those who don’t know about Mr Kirch’s invective dialog

Oh, and the two recipients of the vaccines? My dogs. 😁
I once saw a cat died of feline panleukopenia. It was awful. Then all her newborn kittens also died one by one. I even took time off from work to try to take care of them and save them. But they all died. THAT was even worse.

EDIT: I've encountered many antivaxxers asking me to find unvaccinated autistic people. I usually tell them that all autistic people are born autistic, and not all newborns are immediately vaccinated. So there's their population of autistic and unvaccinated people. Of course they don't like the answer. They don't like the fact that autism is already there when you're born, and it develops later on.

"Race and Ethnicity and Sex Variation in COVID-19 Mortality Risks Among Adults Experiencing Homelessness in Los Angeles County, California" which concludes *excess risk of age-adjusted COVID-19 mortality among PEH compared with the general population.*

Whereas the anti vax beliefs can easily be argued with studies that demonstrate the vaccine is safe and effective for the majority of people the official story of 911 isn't so easily supported when you consider the physics and evidence that have come out against it. Consider over 3000 architects and engineers disagree with the official story and the University of Alaska Fairbanks' study about building 7 clearly refuted NIST's report. For what it's worth I personally don't hold any opinion about who was behind 911.
