Rancouts study, which I read, is so horrendously awful that anyone who has taken an intro to stats course can immediately identify it's serious flaws. Not sure if Bret has any background in stat methods, or even read the study.

The nutcase "forgot" (he on purpose left out) the control cell culture which would've been a properly cared for cell culture. He did this because he knows properly cared for cultures show zero CPE or damage days or weeks after starting the experiment. If he included such a culture he'd be immediately outed as a liar.
I remember very will sitting in a conference with Italian colleagues in Fevruary 2020. They where exhausted with all the ppl flooding their ICUs. That was well before any shutdown.

When I went to Carleton University, Denis was a teacher and he was reprimanded for in part refusing to grade his students iirc. He ran a popular event called Cinema Politica which featured many left-leaning documentaries. He helped to foster engaging dialogue for many students regarding the films. It's really sad to see him go off the deep end like this.

The ship they talk about was luxury cruise ship 'Diamond Princess' which had a major Covid outbreak early 2020 (Traced to one Japanese tourist) and despite taking special measures, had 712 infected passengers. 14 died. (around 2% death rate.) Most were seniors, but not elderly or at deaths door previously. Perhaps they were all just depressed. (?)
If a person has enough notoriety, particularly on the internet, he or she can say anything, and I mean _anything_ , and there will be people who will believe it. If there are enough people believing the hypothetical claim, then those people can use the internet to find each other, communicate and even organize. It is why there was no pre-internet QAnon, or anything resembling it.
They just want you to think there was no pre-Internet QAnon.
The internet, or rather social media, has absolutely made it easier for misinformation and disinformation to spread and for conspiracy theories to spread fast and with enormous reach.
However, Anti-vaxx movements have been around as long as vaccinations. Originally they were led by people who feared they could no longer sell their "miracle cures" but it quickly took on a life of its own.
If you take anti-semitic cospiracy theories as an example, there has been conspiracy theories resembling QAnon for a long time. Take, for instance, so called "blood libel". Actual written documents dating back as far as 1144 can be found where a guy called Thomas of Monmouth in England accused an international council of Jews of sacrificing children every Easter. This accusation spread over the next few decades and led to a massacre of Jews in 1190 during a coronation. It took another few decades by which time it had taken hold on the European continent and from then on until the present day you have the vile myth that Jews drink the blood of Christian children.
Some of the beliefs of QAnon nutjobs are eerily similar. Children are allegedly kidnapped, their blood or hormones are consumed for some nefarious purposes, there is a secret cabal of people who commit these crimes etc
The major difference is that it is now possible to reach people globally within minutes, seconds even, with minimum effort and said people can then seek each other out and form their own echo chambers really, really quickly, reaffirming each other in their beliefs.

In fact I'm going to leave this isolation process for the virus deniers to solve with two questions and a scramble challenge.
Question 1: is this process culturing a virus, bacteria, fungi, or Protozoa?
Question 2: what is the name of this organism/genus/species? (hint the name has been scrambled and is bolded and italicized)
Isolation in cell culture
Culture is the only procedure that confirms the presence of viable organisms. Antigens, nucleic acids or antibodies can be present in the absence of viable infectious particles.
Most, if not all, *_aamcihyedl_* appear to be able to grow in cell culture if the inoculum is centrifuged onto preformed, pretreated cell monolayers (12). Before inoculation and centrifugation, preformed cell monolayers can be treated with 30 µg/mL of Diethylaminoethyl-Dextran in Hanks' balanced salt solution for 20 min to change the negative charge on the cell surface and facilitate adhesion of *_aamcihyedl_* to the cell monolayer. This is not necessary for LGV serovars but facilitates infections by other serovars. LGV strains are capable of serial growth in cell culture without centrifugation. McCoy, HEp-2 and HeLa cells are most commonly used for *_rtcahstmacoi._* Clinical specimens should be inoculated onto cycloheximide-treated monolayer cultures of McCoy cells or other appropriate cells. Inoculation involves centrifugation of the specimen onto the cell monolayer followed by incubation for 48 h to 72 h and staining for intracytoplasmic inclusions. For the shell vial method, McCoy cells are plated onto 12 mm glass cover slips in 15 mm diameter 3.697 mL disposable glass vials. The cell concentration (approximately 1x105 cells/mL to 2x105 cells/mL) is selected to give a light, confluent monolayer after 24 h to 48 h of incubation at 35°C to 37°C in 5% CO2. For optimal results, the cells should be used within 24 h after reaching confluency.
Clinical specimens are shaken with sterile 5 mm glass beads to lyse the epithelial cells and release the *_aamcihyedl_* before being used for inoculation. This procedure is safer and more convenient than sonication. For inoculation, the medium is removed from the cell monolayer and 0.1 mL to 1 mL of inoculum is added to the cells. The specimen is centrifuged onto the cell monolayer at approximately 3000 g at room temperature for 1 h. Where passaging is intended or likely to be needed, specimens are inoculated in duplicate. Shell vials are incubated at 35°C in 5% CO2 for 2 h to allow for the uptake of chlamydiae. The medium is then discarded and replaced with medium containing 1 µg of cycloheximide/mL. The cells are incubated at 35°C in 5% CO2 for 48 h to 72 h, and one cover slip is examined for inclusions by immunofluorescence, iodine staining or Giemsa staining. Although a fluorescent microscope is required, immunofluorescence is the preferred method because it is more specific than iodine or Giemsa staining and can give a positive result as early as 24 h postinoculation. For trachoma, inclusion conjunctivitis and genital tract infections, culture is performed as described above. For LGV, the aspirated bubo pus or rectal swab must be diluted (1:10 and 1:100) with cell culture medium before inoculation. Second passages should always be made because detritus from the inoculum may make it difficult to read the slides.

I think in the future that people who trust the science will have to develop strategies to protect themselves from anti-vaxers and the like. That is minimise risk from contracting the deadly infection while not expecting anti-vaxers to participate whatsoever and letting anti-vaxers have whatever freedom they want. Lockdowns etc gave anti-vaxers a rallying point and amplified their message. People in the medical profession usually start at a point that is all people should be saved, maybe it should be "save those who want to be saved".

I know it wouldn't be a debunking. But I would love to see a breakdown on that study that came out recently : "COVID-19 vaccines and adverse events of special interest: A multinational Global Vaccine Data Network (GVDN) cohort study of 99 million vaccinated individuals"
I have seen at least a few headlines that dramatize the results, at least compared to what I read from it (I'm no scientist).
Would be great to see a levelheaded layman's explanation of the results.
the study says the adverse events are very rare from the vaccine and are much more common from the virus. The study compares rates of those AE's from 2015 to 2019 before covid existed to the rates post vaccination and assumes all of the AE's are then down to the vaccine not the virus so it also over-estimates the rate from the vaccine. The study is specifically designed to try and identify the rare AE's from the vaccine. It's a study that very much supports getting vaccinated so I'm not really sure why anti-vaxxers like to keep banging on about it, other than they assume their followers will not actually look at the study itself but just look at the twisted misrepresentations of it.

All you "anecdotal" people need to study Denis Rancourt's statistical work before you criticize him. Also, listen carefully. He is talking about STATISTICS. He never said there was no virus, or that a virus does not spread...he is talking about the relevance of the correct use of the term "pandemic" as it would apply to the DATA. He also truly relates various events together (lockdowns, isolation, etc) and don't hate him for telling you the results of those associations.

I have read the collective evidence that forms the scientific consensus. Vaccines are safe and effective and I’ve yet to see a piece of evidence provided by an anti-vaxxer that either passes even the most basic scrutiny or doesn’t actually completely disagree with the anti-vaxx narrative.
Feel free to buck that trend and provide some actual evidence that shows vaccines are unsafe or not effective.
It’s not unusual for anti-vaxxers to put forward to completely contradictory arguments in the same claim. There are anti-vaxxers in this thread that will tell you viruses don’t exist and in the next breath, tell you covid was a virus that leaked from a lab. 😂
