      Not smart, not skeptical, Shermer; Dr Wilson lied to you about what Bret said at 15 seconds in.He never said "if told by experts" nonsense.
      You are extremely easily taken in by cheaters so long as you believe they are experts in the field,
      A real chump to be set up with a simple lie, followed by a volume of supposed evidence.

  • @roberth9814
    @roberth9814 8 місяців тому +143

    Is there evidence for what Brett is claiming? No.
    But his claim is clever because it's basically impossible to falsify. He is picking his words carefully, "I want to be *proven wrong.*" He is setting a bar for being debunked that is higher than the bar he is setting for evidence in favor of his own claim.
    This is a warning sign to look for when someone is passionately pleading their case to you in a way that sounds reasonable. They may hold this idea firmly, not because they have evidence, but because they have no perfect falsification of their own idea.
    To the layperson, the stance *appears* to be reasonable. "Well if he's wrong, why can't the scientists just say he's wrong and find proof?"
    But, epistemologically, there's so many problems with this.
    1. An experimentally unfalsifiable hypothesis is, by definition, unscientific
    2. Completely falsifying a well-defined hypothesis is still incredibly difficult and possible only to within degrees of certainty.
    3. The preponderance of data must drive the scientific consensus until better data is made available which supports a different consensus.
    Real scientists who respect the methods of their profession know this, and will never publish a paper that says, "I have no evidence for this, but I bet you can't prove I'm wrong with your own time, money, and effort."
    That is what Brett is asking to be done here, and you can be certain that no level of effort will ever satisfy his conditions for changing his mind. He has denied the onus of building evidence for his claim, and now placed the burden on a profession who's medical literature he is entirely ignorant of or purposefully ignoring. This drives real scientists insane, but plays very well to those who are, "just asking questions."
    The problem with Michael Shermer and other Science communicators is that they don't familiarize themselves with this grab bag of rhetorical tricks. They find themselves sheepishly nodding along when a "reasonable sounding" conjecture is put forward by those like Brett Weinstein.

      That is a brilliant comment. Especially the part about publishing a paper where you make a claim, present no data and conclude it is for others in the field to prove you wrong. (At their expense) It is so obvious that that is not how science is done. So how good a scientist is Weinstein then having used such flawed logic/philosophy/technique. What a grifter he is.

      Michael Shermer is surely familiar with all the main fallacies including argument from ignorance; he might not have had the readiness and/or biology background to spot the fallacy in real time?
      What is the actual claim btw, that the antibodies would attack all the other cells in the body? Wouldn't it be possible to prove disprove it with some in vitro experiment, therefore making the claim (in principle!) falsifiable?

    Why does megyn Kelly never name this vague autoimmune issue? I am unfamiliar with any “test” that you can have at your annual physical that detects “autoimmune” disease of any kind. These things are usually diagnosed by following a pattern and progression of symptoms and using many different tests to rule out other things.
    Maybe she had a C reactive protein test that showed she had inflammation but I am baffled at her claim. That could be caused by anything.
    I developed an “auto immune issue” long before Covid and long before I started vaccinating annually for flu (after no vaxxing as an adult for decades) so who can I claim gave me this problem?

    It is embarrassing to have been a fan of Bret pre-pandemic and worse to see him attempt to tackle immunology without any expertise. In just a little over a couple years of watching microbetv I have catapulted ahead of Bret in basic understanding of the research and it is bewildering to watch him mess up and stick his foot in his mouth over and over since he should technically be capable of better understanding by now. It’s very telling that it is financially beneficial for him to continue spouting nonsense.

    I graduated from The Evergreen State College, the same college that Brett and his wife taught at. So I was interested in events that led up to him leaving, as I saw many of the same problems when I was there in the 1980's, and so I started following his podcasts.
    When Covid hit, Brett was an early adopter of masks, he even always had a bandana around his neck. But then he became an antivaxxer, and while he is an evolutionary biologist, he's not a virologist, microbiologist or epidemiologist.
    He quickly went down the antivaxxer rabbit hole. He never had any virologist or infectious disease specialist on his podcast.
    I think he found it was more profitable to be an anti vaccine grifter, especially after he and his wife left their positions at Evergreen.

The death toll from the pandemic was far worse because there were so many "shruggies" when it came to correcting antivax clowns like him before the pandemic. Some doctors who chose to correct antivax nonsense before the pandemic were actually ridiculed by other doctors for their waste of time dealing with "such minor issues". • @beardedchimp
      @beardedchimp 8 місяців тому +3

      Nobel prizes don't represent some arbitrator of absolute scientific truth. For example Einstein's Nobel prize on the photoelectric effect was a political concession where his work on General/Special relativity remained contentious and so they awarded it for something far more benign.
      The monumentous work towards understanding immunology and genetic biochemistry was already widely respected, understood and iterated upon. The high quality science already had an overabundance of supporting data that had no need of a prize to lend weight. Additionally the Oxford vaccine and several others were entirely unrelated to mRNA approaches. Unfortunately the general public, particularly anti-vaxers have conflated COVID vaccines with mRNA.
      While it feels righteous to use the Nobel Prize as a basis to ridicule anti-vaxxers, it is important to consider the "Nobel disease". The pseudoscience communities latch on to Nobel prize winners spouting egregious claims. They use the prize as an indisputable argument from authority, it holds just as much "proof" as the recent award.
      I'm delightfully happy that hard working scientists who dedicated a substantial portion of their lives on this work are being properly recognised. But being awarded a prize has no bearing on modern peer-reviewed science and it even does them a disservice by labelling them the true experts with authority.

He was obviously not referring to autoimmunity in the sense that the immune system targets your own antigens, but he was referring to autoimmunity in the sense that it targets the foreign spike antigen attached to your own tissues other than the shoulder muscles (where the injection takes place), since the spike protein does not remain in the shoulder but travels to and accumulates in other body tissues tissues. I am a professor for Geophysics, and I am quite shocked by these scientists' responses, who did not grasp this very simple argument Weinstein was making. Maybe among immunologists, the term "autoimmunity" really has the limited meaning these scientists put forward, but then they are making a semantic argument rather than a scientific one.

Perhaps Bret is incorrect on the language he is using to describe what he's trying to illustrate. It seems to me that his argument is that some amount of this mrna or lipid nanoparticles will end up in places that were not intended and if so, may cause cells that come into contact with the aforementioned to be targeted and destroyed by one's own immune system. In the event that it is heart tissue cells that are targeted for destruction, there is less capacity to repair said tissue than something like a deltoid muscle, which is obviously a less important muscle. @jshowao-rw1dh right. The spike protein is a given. We know that the body will attack that. I think what Bret is suggesting is that with an mRNA vaccine, the body's cells are being hijacked by the vaccine to produce foreign antibodies that will be targeted by the immune system, but this will ultimately cause the immune system to sacrifice what would have been normally functioning cells. With that said, "autoimmune" is technically the wrong word to apply here, but the point he's trying to make still seems valid. The vaccine is causing the destruction of what would otherwise have been normal healthy cells just like a virus would by way of the same mechanism. It's essentially an artificial virus. My understanding is that conventional vaccines don't do this as they are merely introducing dead antigens that the body can produce antibodies for. One could make the argument that covid19 is more dangerous than the potential side effects of the vaccine, but that's only if no age/health factor stratification is taken into consideration. Perhaps the vaccine is beneficial for a 76 year old diabetic, but the cost/benefit analysis may be upside down for a healthy 14 year old boy.

    Well here we are folks. Looking forward to the new comments.
    My $0.02. If you read the comments below, Bret's critics never seem to acknowledge the huge number of world renowned experts he's spoken with over the years. Some of the most highly cited scientists in their fields. If they had ever watched these experts on Dark Horse they should have noticed that Bret seems to know almost as much as the experts.
    The same goes for John Campbell. He's called out for being a lunatic and 'not a proper doctor', yet he cites endless evidence, he speaks to experts regularly and holds his own in every discussion.

    • @SYVZS
      @SYVZS 2 місяці тому +1

      Speculation, like what Bret and John Campbell do, is not the same as medical drug testing, peer review and consensus. A theory may sound logical in and of itself but that does not hold the same weight as there being a preponderance of evidence for it. Further, if you are going to speculate (for your own edification only I hope and not to give medical advice like these people) You really need to be highly educated and informed in the fields in question to get it right. The trouble also is most of the public doesn't know enough about the science to see through the grifters or even those who are just inaccurate or flat out wrong because they are experts in other fields and not the one in question.

    When Bret was first on my radar was when he had those videos about the student protests at his university, and the thing that I thought was a bit off with that whole story was the way that the students involved in the protest were nowhere to be seen. No one was trying to find out what they had to say, not even to talk about their supposed shameful behaviour, and the video just seemed way too carefully edited. Fast forward a year, and I randomly wondered about it so I looked around online and found some articles telling the student's side of the story, and lo and behold, a bunch of stuff he said were either lies or obfuscated the truth in substantial ways. Basically, always look for both sides of a story, folks.

    You guys seem well-positioned to give hints as I try to research and understand my PASC! What happened (is happening) to me and what do we do now? My first (severe, known) infection was likely delta breakthrough some 5 months after my first booster. I was given Paxlovid as well as a 3rd booster while still symptomatic. That was 18 months ago.
    The dominant symptom is impaired/slow recovery from exercise. My sense is that I now require 2.5x recovery time. Recovery seems greatly improved by supplementation with l-arginine and liposomal vitamin C. Next prominent is somnolence. Typically, after a full night's sleep the onset of somnolence is some 8 hours after rousing. I suspect this symptom is also due to impaired recovery. Thirdly I have developed an intense dose-dependent generalized neurological response to ingesting glutamate, apparently. As glutamate should not cross the blood brain barrier this reaction seems to indicate damage to the BBB. Or coincidence. Or noisy data. Because the effect is so intense, and because the effect can be masked by the 2 more dominant symptoms, data about this neurological disruption are difficult to gather.
    I seem to be blessed to live in interesting times. 😅

      I wonder if one becomes "anti-cars" when they refuse to drive of express concerns about a vehicle like a Chevrolet even if they drive or encourage others to drive Japanese models like the Toyota which are much safer and more reliable.
