My dad was a runaway deadbeat, in and out of prison and rehab, 💀 last year in a motorcycle accident, fell asleep at the wheel and hit a sign. I didn’t find out until a few months later. I'm sorry that had to be your childhood experience. Mine wasn't quite to that degree. I mean, I saw my dad every other weekend, as long as the current girlfriend approved it, of course. I'm now almost 40, live in the same town as he does, and still haven't seen him in almost 10 years. My relationship with my mother has always been toxic, and earlier this year, I cut off contact to save my own sanity. But I've been married to a wonderful man for 17 years, so our children & I celebrate him and his amazing qualities on Father's Day. I'll always wish things were different. I'll never stop longing for a real relationship with both of them, no matter how hard I tell myself that I don't care. But I've at least learned to not put so much stock into that wish. I understand it's likely never going to happen, and I'm finally okay with that reality. We deserved better than what we were given as kids. But it sounds like you've got a good head on your shoulders, and I wish nothing but the best for you ❤
