- Several years before turning his hand to punditry, Alan Hansen gives a lengthy interview with Bob Wilson for Football Focus at Christmas 1986. He reflects on a year in which he was surprisingly left out of the Scotland World Cup squad by Alex Ferguson but captained Liverpool to a league and cup double.

He looks like Nicky Wire of the MSP here. Willie Miller was probably the best player in Scotland in the mid 80s and him and McLeish formed a great partnership. Hansen might have been better but perhaps they couldnt find the right blend with him in the team. Also it cant be Fergie's fault he only got 26 caps.

Look at that goal by Dalgleish against Chelsea. If you believe the hype quality football like that only started AFTER the Premier league was formed and only players whose names end in an o, i, or a are worthy of mention.
That Scotland side had some superb players, with Alex Ferguson as manager aswell makes you wonder why they never went further 🤔
Spot on, but they were so unlucky with the Mexico 86 group of death draw. This was pre-FIFA rankings so Denmark with Laudrup and Elkjaer went into the same pot as the Faroe Islands would have, just because it was their first World Cup. Any other group they would have qualified.
