  • Cool on the ball, calm under pressure and an integral part of the meanest defence in Liverpool history, Alan Hansen in a red shirt was class personified.
    Rated by many as the club's finest ever centre-half, the elegant Scot boasts one of the most impressive medal collections in football.
    Hansen helped bring eight league titles and three European Cups to Anfield during his 13 years on Merseyside. Oh, and in 1986 he captained the Reds to their first ever double

    I played the amateur game and onto semi professional from school boy to my mid 30s, believing I was never as technically gifted as other players I did became a very solid and consistent defender, I based my style and playing philosophy on Alan Hansen, and it served me well.. I loved the way he watched and hunted the ball before going on to create play from the back, giving total confidence to his forward players.. it wasn't until I stopped playing and coming across fantastic opposition players from over the years that they all feared playing against me, stating they regarded me among the best of the toughest and fairest players they had come across, and for them I had mastered the art of defending!
    Although the glory of goals and reputations were sparse the quiet hard work and satisfaction of frustrating the opposition with last ditch tackles and relentless legs being the difference over many seasons of toil made me smile, fortunate enough to win trophies and on occasions scoring goals at seemingly critical moments I can look back and say that this mans example of the game was fundamentally my guiding light..

      If he was Italian, he would've been captain and likely a superstar. One of the forgotten aspects of his game was a world class distribution from defense. He could open up a defense with a killer long pass or set his midfield in motion. I was fortunate as a lad to watch Liverpool in that era.
      He is one of the few players I believe with a less physical game would be a star now. His game is well suited to the modern game. When defenders need to be more about positioning and brains then brawn.

Used, his deceptive speed, instincts, positional brilliance and timing to continually be in the right spot to shut down an attack. Plus as an outlet from the back he was world class. A superb passer of a ball and could carry a ball from his own pen area to well inside another team's half. Very underrated dribbler.

    • @BurnsTennis
      @BurnsTennis 3 роки тому

      A lot surrounding Scotland during that period of their history is a mystery. But I think one key reason is politics. Look how many very talented Scots who played in England didn't get as many Scotland caps including Steve Nicol, Gary Gillespie. Now Scotland would be gagging for such talent whereas in the 1980s they were turning up their nose at it.
      Perfect example, Ray Houghton. Glasgow born, had trials for Scotland as a youngster and Andy Roxborough told him in no uncertain terms he was not interested. Jack Charlton researched and knew his dad was Irish and Ray ended up playing and becomming a legend for Republic of Ireland. Hougton has told this story more than once.
      I don't recall the Scottish midfield having better players than Ray Houghton in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

    He was a Unicorn in that era. He was not a hard-nosed defender and rarely needed to make last gasp tackles to stop an attack. Instead? He used unreal positional sense, timing and athleticism to seemingly always be in the right spot. Plus, he was a fantastic passer of a ball. The link between him, Souness and the forwards was a thing of beauty.
    I truly believe had Hansen been French, Italian, Spanish or German he would've been one the greatest defenders to play the game. A mix of bad luck and moronic Scottish football politics prevented him from a long international career.
    Nonetheless he won every domestic title and then some. To this day I think Hansen and Lawrenson are the best central defender combination I've ever seen in British football.
