- A brief clip from Sportsnight on 30 May 1984, featuring interviews with Graeme Souness, Bruce Grobbelaar and Joe Fagan after Liverpool had won the European Cup Final against AS Roma in Rome. And then some brief news clips from the following day on the treatment of Liverpool fans in Rome, and the homecoming parade in Liverpool.

Joe Fagan had the greatest old-fashioned Scouse accent.
No attempt at laying it on thick, no affectations, just a lovely voice.
When we were going the match back then we all considered Joe to be like our grandad.

@@DaveWallerLFC Thanks Dave. I've just seen that. Crikey, not sure if it is the lighting in that interview, or crazy lighting from Rome, but he does look very different in '85 compared to '84. I remember seeing him crying getting off the plane after Heysel. A terrible time.
Didnt mean to dampen the mood. It's a lovely interview with Howard - the general affection between both but you can tell Joe was jaded. In the book written about him, he made up his mind to go early 1985.
What an amazing night. I was there, 40 years ago to this date - 30th May 2024. It was 5 days after my 19th birthday ( my 12th & 40th birthdays were a bit special too 🏆🏆) . I travelled up from south Wales & went on the special from Lime Street, train & ferry to Rome. The lads did us proud, that Roma side were really dangerous, but we good past them. After the game was chaos, the coach I got back to the train station on had half the windows smashed, there was glass all over the seats. I had nothing to eat or drink until the Friday, as every station the train stopped at was full of police who wouldn't let us off & the French ferry locked all the shops & Restaurant up until we got off. I couldn`t have cared less as long as we had won the cup, I would have walked & swam home. YNWA.

Clive Tyldesley gave an interview recently where he talks about his Radio City days. It's On YT. He told a story how he use drink with the players back then - and one time on a train home from Wembley (I assume the Milk Cup Final in March) he overhead a player's wife say 'Isn't it a shame that X (Souness wife) is going to Italy to live next season'

Wonderful interviews. So down to earth, no arrogance, no sneering like today. Reminds me of the interviews after the 1974 Fa Cup win. This is Souness - only minutes after one of the greatest performances in the history of the game.
When Livepool sold Souness it was, in my opinion the greatest act of folly in the clubs history, he was the first dommio to fall which began the clubs decline. The tradgedies of Heysel and Hillsborough would follow, but they were beyongd Livepools control. Never underestimate the influence he had both on and off the pitch(something that Roy Keane would have at United). Micheal Robinson recalls how, prior to a league cup match at Brentford, Souness went round each player in the dressing room, urging them on, "you woud have though we were playing Barcelona", recalls Robinsion, "we had an inner belief that if we played badly, anybody could beat us, but if we played well, nobody could beat us". All the standards came from Souness, there was a real loss in power for the next two seasons. Many Liverpool fans look back on that fateful final game with Arsenal, and say if it hadn't been for Hillsborough, we would have won the league. The reality is, Liverpool were a shadow of the side that had swept to glory the previous season, and only a surge later in the season set up the frenetic finish. I don't believe that Souness would have let the standards slip that seasonand then, who knows how the following seasons would go.
Souness let standards slip pretty alarmingly when he was manager, didn't he? Where were the motivational speeches when we were drawing 4-4 at home with Chesterfield, and losing to Peterborough, Bolton and Bristol City? He was 36 by the end of the 88/89 season, so there's no way he would have been playing at that time ahead of Whelan and McMahon. He was undoubtedly a great player and captain, and arguably the club let him leave too early, but I don't think your argument about that being the cause of the later decline stacks up. The fact that there was a great team 4 years after he left shows that the club were well capable of thriving without him.
@@DaveWallerLFC I didn't claim it was the cause, i said that his sale was the first domino to fall. There is no one cause as to why the club went into decline, the European ban had a devastating effect on the club, Phil Neal described(in his book Life at the Kop) how the club had always gambled on participation in that tournament and in the wake of the ban, all the bulbs were changed from 100 watts to 40 watts. Then in his time a smanager, after strenghtening the side with the signings of Barnes, Beardsley andf John Aldridge, he let thing slip. With the loss of Mark Lawrenson and with Alan Hansens career coming to an end, he should have prioritised at least one top class central defender. As for Souness's time as the manager, by his own admittance he came in like a bull at a china shop and his iron fist approach worked at Rangers because they hadn't won the league for eleven years and they were a young side, this approach didn't work with seasoned pro's. It is a supreme irony that this diciplinary approach was needed with the young players such as Fowler, Rednapp and McManamman.
The domino analogy implies that the decline is ongoing from that point. I'd say the effect from Souness's departure had stopped by the time the double was won in 1986, with McMahon (or MacDonald) and Molby having replaced him, even if it took 2 players. The impacts of Heysel (and the subsequent ban) and Hillsborough were undoubtedly part of the reasons for the decline, but there is no connection to Souness, so you can't call it dominos in my view. I still don't understand what you think Souness would have done (as a player?) in 88/89 to stop standards slipping (if they did - I'm not convinced that once injuries improved to allow a settled defence that season the performances were that far below the season before).
@@DaveWallerLFC Liverpool found Souness inmpossible to replace in the 1984/85 season, Kevin MacDonald didn't even come close, Jan, initially found the pace of the english game a problem, Alan Hansen told Kenny that the 1985/86 teams was the worst he had ever played in. Kenny should have replaced Mark Lawrenson following his injury in the 1986/87 season, he knew that his captain and close friend Alan Hansen was fighting a battle with a knee injury and the end of his career was on the horizon, a first class central defender should have been a priority. As for Souness's influence, well you could argue that had we not sold him, the following seasons could have turned out differently, he had such an influence both on and off the pitch.

Great clashing match on Roma's home turf! I remember watching the highlights on Wide World of Sports here in America back in 84. Fagan great replacement for Paisley- sad what happened the next year! Now who's gonna replace Klopp? To wait and see.

Elder brother left our house to go to Rome, I was 14. Me mum put double egg and chips on the table and uttered the fateful words "He wanted to take you but I wouldn't let you go". I sat in stunned silence as the egg and chips went cold. 21 year wait to see us lift it in Istanbul
Count it as a blessing. I know one 8 year old who was terrified when the coach windows were done in.

Imagine if Souness had not left, and with John Work and the rest of the team and Paul Walsh, would we have lost the Intercontinental, the Community Shield and the European Super Cup, knowing that Dalglish could not have been stopped? Would we have lost the Champions League semi-final against United?
Also, would Souness have been made Liverpool player-manager in 1985, instead of Kenny Dalglish?
I think the decision to have Kenny Dalglish as Joe Fagan's replacement was made before Graeme Souness left. Souness himself called this out in his autobiography in 1984, predicting that this was the reason Kenny was given a long contract extension when he was already into his 30s.

Those sort of "what if" questions are always impossible to answer, but you'd have to imagine 1984/85 would have been better had Souness stayed. There were other issues like Rush missing the start of the season and only scoring 14 league goals, though. The next uploads will probably be from 1980/81.
Why did Souness leave Liverpool?
Money. The wages he was offered at Sampdoria were much higher than Liverpool could offer. And Liverpool felt they couldn't turn down the transfer fee offered for a player of his age.

Serie A was becoming the league to be in - all the top players in the world were there or moving there (which only underlines how great the win in Rome was - the entire Roma midfield played in the famous Italy - Brazil 1982 world cup game ). I always knew Rushy would be taken from us - so I made sure to enjoy watching him when I could. One Liverpool pub had a 3 day drinking session with actor Andrew Schofield (aka Franny Scully) partaking. Well known pictures of him singing and dancing on tables.
