I understand the motivation (any claim for having an understanding how Ukrainians feel would be presumptuous!). However the history of my country, Germany, shows that the willingness of using denigrating features of language for a “good cause” often is followed by uses one hadn't intended. Next time maybe someone finds it ok to write Kenyan or African in small letters, or Jews or Christian. It seems that it is difficult to limit such "Rule-bending" to the intended "good cause" because there are always people who won’t or are unable to do it “responsiblly”. But again I must emphasize that I have no intention to criticize this! As I write this I am sitting on my balcony with no threat to my or my loved ones well-being! I only send you my love and my best wishes and assure you that my heart and my thoughts are with you literally by the day and the minute!

You need to understand in this case the Ukrainian language has more context to it as it was the first things Lenin assaulted when they took over Ukraine's provisional government in 1918.
The Ukrainian language, literature and anything culturally Ukrainian was banned by the Politburo. In order to facilitate the holodomor, Stalin first got rid of the intellectuals who promoted Ukrainian culture.
I think the Ukrainians have had enough of Sovietization/Russification up to now and need to get rid of anything reminiscent of Russian imperialism.

It seems kind of silly to make a rule like that for the language, although I don't think the leader of the war even deserves to be named at all. With this rule, I feel like it punishes the citizens of the country who for the majority, don't support the war. My cousins on my dad's side were saddened when this war began because my great grandpa was born in Tchortoryya in 1881 which wasn't part of Ukraine until the 1990s and as a Jew he probably wasn't treated well in his own country of birth. He immigrated to Montreal in 1913. My great grandma, great aunt and great uncle immigrated to Montreal and joined him the following year. My grandpa was born in Montreal in 1914 as the first of the immediate family born in Canada. Love to all Ukrainians!

In addition, you must not forget that percentage of the population of Ukraine that has dual citizenship, Ukrainian and Russian. Sometimes you need to think that Ukrainians who received such "russian passport" did it because they were forced to!!! This was especially true in the occupied Donbas region.
And an unfortunate and hurtful truth is that there are a small number of Ukrainians, with Ukrainian passport and who were born on Ukrainian territory, who ate up the russian propaganda growing up and are now on the russian's side. These people don't deserve Ukrainian citizenship, if they still have it. Luckily, that number is very small

My family lived in India, and lived through a period of war with its neighbour, Pakistan.
This attack on language seems very strange and almost dangerous as it would antagonize 8 million people in Ukraine who would ethically be Russian and speak Russian as well.
In India during the war, despite the horrors and senselessness of it,
The Urdu language, being the language of Pakistan was treated the same as any other language in India.
All these convoluted rules purely in spite of a language seems foolish. And might even Justify Russian Propaganda.

Language is neutral. It is just a tool. We know what Putin is doing is inexcusable. And we want to see the Russian army go back to Russia. However, changing spelling rules won’t in reality do anything. And the Russian language in Russia itself is not going to be affected by this policy. It would be like Great Britain retaliating against the U.S. for something by changing a few spelling and grammar rules or refusing to say/ write certain words or phrases.
My wife is from Ukraine and she wants Russia to stop the killing and go home. However, I don’t think Putin cares about language changes in Ukraine. What needs to happen instead is to provide Ukraine with enough help to drive Russia out of the country.

I do support Ukraine in this war and I truly hope that this nightmare will be over soon. However I disagree with this such changings in the language for a few reasons. First of all, not all Russians support this war and I think it's unfair to generalise. Second of all, why don't we condemn other wars and other aggressive countries? Palestinians have been suffering for so long and nobody cares to critcise Israel. Also what the US have done in countries like Vietnam, Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq... I just don't think it's fair to admonish some and excuse others... Of course you as Ukrainian care most about your country, which is totally understandable, but I mean others. And I'll repeat it once again so that nobody twists my words or takes them out of the context... I DO NOT support Russian politics. I'm just trying to be fair and sympathize with all victims. Ну, в любом случае, пусть каждый пользуется своим языком, как хочет. What about citizens who doesn't support putin's regime? Who support Ukraine and absolutely against this act of aggression?
I know a lot of Russians who volunteers and support Ukrainian refugees, who really hates putin and his government, who was in a jail for being in opposition, but who still loves their Russian culture and honor their ancestors. Is that really fair (or worth it?) to call all of them facist too and "cancel" their identity just because part of their "compatriots" are evil or just stupid people? Is it ok to unite and humiliate people just on the basis of their nationality? I believe Ukraine and the rest should be above that. That's not the thing we all should spend energy fighting with, IMHO.

As a Russian, I find this war deplorable. Even though I don't live there any more, I feel in part responsible for my country's actions - just because of being from there. And the anger Ukrainians must feel against my countrymen is more than justified. But I am NOT a lowercase Russian. Hitler's countrymen are not lowercase Germans, and so forth. Once we begin to dehumanize an entire nation, an entire race, etc., murderous dictators begin to win over, regardless of their (lack of) success on the battlefield. Слава Україні 💙💛

Ukraine 🇺🇦 forces are still... or at least up until a few weeks ago bombing civilian residential buildings in RUSSIAN 🇷🇺 oriented cities. & this was happening for 8 years. Ever since the government was overthrown and a Western puppet state was established. The RUSSIA 🇷🇺 sympathizers from the Donbas region didn’t agree with this new regime and were more oriented towards RUSSIA 🇷🇺 ... hence they rebelled and refused to bow down to the new Kiev regime.
The War has been going on for 8 years but RUSSIA 🇷🇺 finally got openly involved in february... The War ESCALATED & was promoted from Ukranian civil war to what could be considered an ex Soviet civil war.
This is RUSSIAS 🇷🇺,,Cuban missile crisis”... in the 60s the usa 🇺🇸 was ready to start WWIII over this potential threat from the Soviet Union establishing heavy arms ,,close” to its borders.. now the turntables.. except this is much closer and from more sides pointing towards RUSSIA 🇷🇺... the usa 🇺🇸 got its way with a mere threat of all out WAR or as some call it ,,diplomacy” & Soviets backed off & WWIII was postponed.
This time nato chose not to back off as the Soviets did last time, and the logical progression is WAR. The same way it would have been WAR had the Soviets decided to ignore usas 🇺🇸 safety concerns.
But nobody wants or likes to look at things from multiple angles. Everybody likes to put themselves as well as their own Countrymen, the likeminded & allies on the moral high-ground & demonize dehumanize
the opposite side. & This goes both ways

People can do whatever they want with their own language. But changing the name of the country you don't belong to in the language that is not your native is ridiculous.
This war will end someday, but unless Ukrainians and Russians stop breeding hate against each other, such wars will keep happening.
Just watch BadComedian's last video (that's for everyone who understands Russian). This change is just another drop in a huge sea of hate propaganda.
I subscribed to this channel to learn Ukrainian, to communicate to Ukrainians in their language, because most of them speak or at least understand mine, I hoped to visit Ukraine, to help with rebuilding the cities etc., but the more of such videos, and comments, I see, the more I realise that it just makes no sense. People want the physical war to stop, but not the verbal war, which doesn't seem to ever end, and this will only bring about more wars.
It was very educational to watch your videos, and I want to thank you for all the hard work you put into your channel. Moreover, the only variant of the words like Украина and украинский that I've ever heard in my life before this war is и-stressed, not a-stressed, and it was a surprise for me that so many people stress "a". And I come from a really small town, only 20k people (with only one small Z-banner in the place where one enters the town, just to stick to these stupid rules). So the tendencies you described are not that common, and people are different.
As to how you understood this video, this is clearly not what Zhenya intended to say. But actually, as much as I've considered myself ally of Ukrainians since 2013/4, and we have no upper and lower case letters in Cantonese, I've used an older name for russia 羅剎 very frequently in this context. Definitely, the warring state (russian fed) would not like this name if I were a foreign diplomat. I mean, I accept this theory as a matter of sentiments. It's pretty much just free speech, something that russian fed doesn't like and doesn't want everybody except themselves have.
Similar archaic country names existed for England 英吉利, Spain, and Portugal, and in fact Spain 西班牙 and Portugal 葡萄牙 are still in their original "names" that still contain a character "tooth". Even the Jews are still called 猶太人 (with an animal radical), but so far Spain, Portugal and Israel have not criticized our translations/have accepted them.
I also accept that interacting with different foreigners is almost like diplomacy, almost like "my" diplomacy or Ukraine's. Different people have sentiments and a lot of dislikes and likes. I have to be understanding.

Do you know if there is a way to change the auto-capitalization rules on iPhone? These words always autocorrect to uppercase and I have to manually correct them every time.

I've preferred to completely ignore their made-up name of "russia" and just refer to it as "Muscovy". Though perhaps that one should also be lower case now?

Well, Ruzzia (today) under Poopin is certainly different than Russia 30 years ago, when they weren't fascist, belligerent, etc, and they had peace with their neighbours.
I don't see anything wrong in using creative spelling in its proper context, but there are still valuable Russian contributions to literature, music, art, and all Russians are not evil people who support this war of aggression and the ruzzian war crimes.

But in reality a Nato vs Russia proxy war. While Nato isn’t openly intervening. But by sending troops to as if they’re Ukrainian units

@@zx6r531 Yes, I agree with you. I'm thinking more about seeing both sides of ww2. Most ppl choose to only see one side. russia has murdered millions of ppl throughout history but never seems to pay for their crimes. At least ppl are seeing how horrible russia is. Long live Ukraine!

Russification of Ukraine really started under Tsar Peter and Catherine II. So, it has actually been going on for centuries.

It's making a fair point. Ukraine isn't telling the whole world what it must or must not do, it's kind of making its own statement about how Ukraine should not be expected to give any part of its own culture up, such as its own language, literature, and grammar. Or even worse, its own land and national identity!
    Quite clever really!

My late Dido was born in Karpiliwka, UA in 1927 and my late Baba was born in Yelnya, RU in 1940. Keeping up on the news all throughout my childhood into adulthood and having a family friend and classmate that we would call on Sundays until we lost contact. It hurts so much to see what putler has been doing to so many innocent people over his reign as dictator. I pray for an end to this and for our true freedom to begin. Слава Україні! Thank you for the language update. I have written about 15 poems in support of Ukraine so far. I have changed the names to russia and putin in support of reduction of status. I also donate to Stand with Ukraine on a regular basis. Some of poems mention sergei lavrov and Patriach, kirill whose names I have also demoted to lower case.
I very much appreciate your language videos! I Do hope to visit Ukraine after your victory to meet my new friends, Anzhela Maslennikova and Viacheslav Stelmakh in person!!
