    Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles was absolutely the best thing since T2...should have left film alone unless there was a true capstone event from the show, and kept that show running...

      The show was way to expensive for regular TV, for the amount of people watching, and that was the reason they cancelled it.

      It's funny, 'cause I saw Parasite first, then The Lighthouse. Parasite is definitely a great film, but I feel like people are hyping it up a little too much. I feel like it dragged a tad too much at the end (and I'm personally irked by the fate of one particular character). It has an interesting story and it was entertaining, but The Lighthouse was A JOURNEY. First off, definitely not for everyone, but I left feeling.... just, *more* after The Lighthouse. Would watch that again before Parasite.

    Terminator sequels that might work?
    A: "Alien 3", do a horror in an enclosed space (mental hospital?) Maybe with murder mystery notes (who is the Terminator?)
    B: "... In Space!", future setting w/o a Judgement Day a stealthily set up Skynet wakes up and attacks.
    C: "Time Wars", lots of future timelines fighting each other to be the real one. Basically the TV show/Genysis done right.
    D: "Oscar Bait", Dan's idea from the review (?) for a psychological drama about being John Conner without a Judgement Day.
    I'm sure there are plenty more.

    • @johnpotts8308
      @johnpotts8308 5 років тому +1

      How about E: It's set "now" (after T2, before the apocalypse) - an FBI/CIA/WTF Agent goes undercover in a survivalist compound. They discover the survivalists are extremely tech savvy (and possibly even have access to an inoperative familiar looking robot). The end of Act 1 twist is that this compound is RUN by John Connor who is building his forces and monitoring the enemy for the possible war to come. Since we probably need (for commercial reasons) an actual Terminator fight, we probably have to have the Terminator inadvertently reactivated. It ends without any definitive answer as to whether John Connor is paranoid and incapable of operating in society or the only person who is monitoring the real threat.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 5 років тому

      I can't believe it but how about doing a prequel which is also a sequel? Why not going back to the future in which humans fight the machines and put John Conner in a situation in which he has to decide if he should risk his troops to rescue Rees or not? I mean, it must be pretty weird to be older than your own father. But it also would be a new angle to the story.

    • @cjwrench07
      @cjwrench07 5 років тому +2

      swanpride that sounds a lot like Salvation to me. Where John, and the cyborg, infiltrate skynet HQ to rescue a young Rees, and somehow a T-800 can’t kill John almost instantly in hand-to-hand combat.
      The problem with setting the movies in the future, is that you have to neuter the intelligence amd capabilities of Skynet; and the real-world consequences of a sizeable nuclear exchange on the environment.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 5 років тому

      Sure, but Salvation actually botched this angle completely, because they just HAD to put in this convoluted robot story nobody wanted. The franchise really has to stop pretending that it has to say something about the relationship between humans and machines until it actually has something to say. Meanwhile it can focus on the philosophical questions of time travel. Or examine the flawed notion of a chosen one.

    It's not about interest and it's not about Woke or not Woke, it's about planing a mega-franchise around a movie then clapping out a script in 4 hours while you plan spinoffs.
    Terminator, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Ghostbusters, all can be good ideas for movies but don't have the premise that can extend to spinoffs and mini franchises.

    They need to bring back the Sarah Connor Chronicles, or create a new television show for streaming services that expands the lore of the Terminator universe. Instead of relying on these half-baked reboots and sequel cash grabs. The Sarah Connor Chronicles was smart, it had heart, and it left off on such an amazing premise before it got canceled that it just blows my mind how no one can see the writing on the wall. We are living in the age of streaming with amazing shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad to learn from.
    The terminator premise is ripe for character growth and serialized storytelling. And Sarah Connor chronicles proved this.

    I had an idea for a Terminator movie. The film starts with John Connor leading the resistance to destroy Skynet. All the factories producing Terminators and the Time Machine are rigged to blow and they are heading to destroy Skynet itself. With no hope of winning, Skynet tries to upload itself into a Terminator but the factories are destroyed before it can do so. In a last-ditch effort, Skynet uploads itself into a new experimental Terminator in a secret base underground. This Terminator body is similar to the one in Salvation. It is the most realistic re-creation of the human body. A body that even needs food and sleep. It was designed to infiltrate resistance camps without detection and report back to Skynet. Skynet escapes with this body. Throughout the course of the film, with Skynet on the run from a vengeful John Connor who is determined to finish the job, Skynet learns what it's like to be human and even begins to feel remorse for the war and mass genocide it has committed. I think it would be a very interesting concept to explore. Especially if a human ends up falling in love with Skynet and is trying to protect it from John Connor. It would also give a personality to a force that throughout the entire series has just been a name.

    Dark Fate was going to fail for oh-so-many reasons, many of which got discussed here, but there's something very specific that gets hinted at above but not quite stated:
    *There's no reason for audiences to invest in a new Terminator movie. None.*
    We all know what the plot(s) will be. We know what all the beats will be. We know there'll be some timey-wimey universal chicanery. We know the latest movie will pretend to care about a new bunch of characters and then not give a damn about them later. We know there's no point investing further in even the core characters because we've seen what they're willing to do with Sarah (a la T3) and with John (a la GeniSys and Dark Fate). We know, we know, we know. There's just no reason to care. Every Terminator movie since T2 seems like a film made by Etch-A-Sketch that a quick shake will wipe completely away. There's just no point. There's no reason to actually care.
    And the great symptom of the cynicism of all of this was clear from when we found out Linda Hamilton was coming back as Sarah, but there wasn't a bit of news about John being part of the story. Long before the movie was released, everyone sussed out what they were going to do (and what they, of course, did) and that was just the straw that broke that metallic camel's back. They said it was going to pick up from T2, but then they went and shat all over that movie by treating John like Poochie from The Simpsons. You could practically hear people muttering "oh, f*ck off" before Dark Fate was even near a release date.
    All of that's the real problem with the Terminator IP and you can't really come back from that. And, yes, that's exactly what killed the Fox X-Men series, too. Both series just killed off any reason for people to care anymore.

    Thank you Dan for bringing up Bumblebee! People keep saying this about Terminator but the Transformers franchise has also faced the same issue this past year. I wish u pointed out: This franchise has failed since they will not include Edward Furlong. He played too big of a role to be recast. They have had a total of six characters portraying him on screen (including James Cameron’s future John) . This egregious recasting is detrimental to the franchise, essentially bottle-necking the entire potential regardless of other factors are supposed to weigh in. The only way they could’ve or even still could save this franchise, which will not happen by the way, is to have John Connor be played by Edward, be accompanied roles by possibly Linda, Arnold l, maybe Robert Patrick lol, and continue the T2 storyline.
    Like Doug (NC) and Brad (Cinema Snob) said : They went full Alien 3 on this one!
    Beloved characters that James Cameron has created for Terminator and aliens part two like Newt and John Connor are killed instantly at the beginning of part 3! Lol let the James Cameron characters live on and continue to make us content movie viewers!
    Love you guys as always! Thanks so much for making me a well informed audience member!

      All things that won't happen, unfortunately. Movies nowadays get money hurled at them (unless you're an independent, in which case Hollywood pretends you don't exist) regardless of the script or track record of the director. Audiences demand big actors, and bitch and whine if they don't see them. R rated is meaningless these days, either its a sanitised movie for a broader audience or it goes full X rated with extreme violence, nothing in between.
      Sad, really. Can you imagine a retro movie, using old styles and filming methods, with modern equipment? Would be interesting to see. Terminator made the mistake of explaining too much - we don't need to know ANYTHING about Skynet or the future resistance movement beyond a few comments. The first two focused on the Terminators being the 'big bad' rather then just yet another expendable minion, and not knowing about them added to the suspense and terror.

    The only reason why I knew anything about the existence of an Arctic Dogs is because I was watching some Byron Allen show and a commercial ran for it... about 6 times in a row. Byron Allen's "plan" for marketing the movie was to push it throughout his empire - his marketing budget was probably zero as a result.

    I find the level of my addiction to this show strangely disturbing...
    1 bn$ Joker - told ya - is a clear sign the cinema ain’t dead yet:)
    And why would I fear it kaput?
    Films in US make roughly 35 bn $ a year (cinema + home), video games spending is at 44 bn and grows 5% per year.
    Thank you Dan and that super nice Other Guy (I know, sorry, I’ll learn) for my weekly dose🙏🏻

    One of the problems with the Terminator franchise is that it has such a long history both in time and in number of movies. As a 20 year old who has only seen the first movie, all of the trailers rely on nostalgia and so, to me at least, discourage new people from going to see them.

    Actually, killing Miles Dyson, as well as destroying the Cyberdyne CPU chip and Arnold wasn't the end all, be all for Skynet's creation to happen since Dyson was just a spoke in the wheel of the company and they would have had made copies/back-ups of any material he created. Also, the T-800 arm was never destroyed. A proper follow-up to the second film is the Dark Horse Comics story, "T2: Judgment Day - Present War: Cybernetic Dawn" and "Future War: Nuclear Twilight", which do a really good job at taking some lose plot elements from the movie and filling them out.

    It seems that no real passion goes into writing anything these days. There was a great boom, particularly in TV, with things such as Breaking Bad, in recent years, and I thought it was ushering in a new age of great writing/direction. But yeah, this movie was lacking. I literally grew up on T2 and I can enjoy a movie for what it is, Dark Fate is just an action flick like all the other sequels.
    But particularly, the characters all days nonsensical things, didn't ask the right questions, the dialogue fell flat. And overall it was just a non-stop crazy action flick. I barely felt myself absorbed in any of the scenes. I don't think I could quote anything from the film.
    I ended up just wanting to see how well Gabriel Luna played his role, in the end. I had said he would make an awesome terminator after seeing him as Robbie Reyes, so was waiting to see it.

School's back in, weather is changing, Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner, and so on. It's difficult to just get take out much less see a movie this time of year.

    The marketing was all wrong for this sequel. They should have played up the nostalgia instead of just another action movie. People are crazy for nostalgia these days and the trailers didn’t play into that. Yes, it has the o.g. Sarah Connors and Arnold but they should have slow revealed them or show flashes of the previous movies, something to play up the nostalgia and build up anticipation. Instead, the trailer looked like just another action movie with the Terminator name attached to it. Sad cuz this a franchise has a following including me but the trailer didn’t excite me.

    The spectacular failure of Arctic Dogs kind of drives home my big frustration with film distribution. My cinema has movies like that, The Current Wars, and others that have no buzz of promotion, but if I want to see Parasite, JoJo Rabbit, The Lighthouse, or Motherless Brooklyn, I'm going to have to go out of town. Even if I can manage it for one or two of them, it basically means missing movies I've been waiting months for on the big screen because of movies no one is going to see.
