The offset jaws, in my opinion, creates no less damage to an animals foot. Laminated offset with rounded welded on rods on top of original jaws of the trap, make a difference in the trap standing up against hard pulling coyotes and whatever. I don’t know the answer to what trap is comfortable to an animal that it has caught, and neither do the ones making the laws. But then then again the ones making the laws, cry about the coyote that ate their cat or the coon that turned over their garbage can. The Dukes with the wide smooth jaws, and the MB traps are excellent, as well are the old Victors, and others. Can please all the bleeding hearts however. If we caught animals in rubber lined traps with animal beds and cable TV installed, the bleeding heart know nothings would still complain. Thanks
Thoughts on rubber jaw. No steel traps allowed in Florida( including dog proof) without approval from fwc
I seen ads on this one...WoooHooo. Getting paid.
We put hog rings on the trap jaws to make them offset back in my trapping days.
I agree to a point when your talkin about same pressure applied to a uniform object but the feet of canines and cats are not uniform. Distance jaws can close above the pad vs the circumference of the pad is considerably smaller. Same as the toes. If the toes wasn’t as bulbous on the end than no jaw strength or amount of lockup would prevent pullouts. That why deer pull out. No hump to close above and hold. No matter my thoughts since my state’s regs only allow offset but I my opinion is most people think traps hold off pressure alone and that’s simply not true. Pressure of jaws above a hump such as a pad or bulbous toe is what holds
Adjusting the trap pan to weight of the target animal, does help reduce toe catches. Although, when I had time to trap and depended on it, I certainly didn’t want to adjust only for coyotes and miss the bobcat or red fox. Nothing is perfect in the trapping world for sure. Thanks
If you know someone who has that device that measures clamping force you could without a doubt prove this scientifically! Offset might even have more clamping pressure!!! 🤣
You are miss understanding what the offset is for. There’s less pressure between the pad & the toe of the animal In the closed position because it’s not completely closed all the way. It’s not closing force that less it’s the closed position force that’s less
What do you do with the meat after a large harvest
Thank I was having trouble with this all myself. My grandson wants to start traping this up comming year and this video really help me out. So thank you for the good info.
Hey what's best way to clean rust off trap's
Thanks Amigo great info.. I'll be waiting for the rest of the series.
The Idea of Off Set Jaws is to maintain blood flow to the compressed tissue which would help stop twist offs and ring outs.
Unless the animals foot is smaller than the offset it doesn't matter. You are still applying the same amount of pressure at the jaws.
I have seen you stick your hand in the bridger #3, so stick your hand in the duke
This comment didn’t age well
How do you hide your retriever cable on your traps?
Quality of your vid seem much improved. New camera?
Great video
Good video
Great video thanks
True story
Yeah, first!
I quit telling people this because they don't understand or believe it. I actually think they are liberals because of it going over their heads........
👍
Everyone has a right to their own opinion I guess..
Long spring vs coil spring on freeze up
Was you a little drunk?
Offset or not, laminated or not,if one snaps on you, ouch and I imagine the varmints feel the same way😂
Agree 100 percent.
I don't think you have made any points with the trapping community on the segment. The truth is your right on what you;ve presented in this video. BUT, You've taken away the element of "The new traps with offset jaws is more humane on the animals caught". Peoples Pets. and activists
If I remember right the offset came about because of the humanitarian folks complaining about 3 footed critters running about.
How do you go with about freezing pelts if you don't have a buyer could you make a video on the correct way? . awesome video
Dude you are mistaken!
I have been trapping for 50 years. The offset is to give the animal better blood flow so is will not be too stressed and fight the trap. These are used for Coyote and Fox mostly.
That's on a board not dogs or Foxes foot closed jaw traps injury feet way more than offset ,I see in my fox catches
If anything physics would suggest that the further up the lever goes the more pressure is applied.
I understand the conservation behind trapping I just can’t do it. It’s not my cup of tea. But I know it’s needed to control ecosystems.
I stick my hands in my mb 650 traps to show people these traps don't cut the animals leg off. They have the bear trap with teeth in their mind lol.
Anything in my state that is 5 inches or bigger has to be offset. Even water traps!! It’s annoying to
@Aaron Loos nah it don’t. Anything I’ve used that trick with all traps I had to put an offset in
I presumed it was easier because that gap left a little room for the animals with smaller bones or something. Like a mb550 offset on a domestic cat ect.
What about using gloves i c people using different gloves for trap and bait. And ive seen people not using gloves while doin bait but gloves while bedding. And ive seen people not using gloves doin both
So sad that I do not see on reply or even a thumbs up.... Unsudded
I think when people say it’s easier in critters they mean a house cat, or little FiFi poodle. Smaller animals have a better chance in an offset VS a non offset.
Lots of b.s. info out there that does causes a beginner to think trapping is alot more complicated then it is
I agree with you tow a Pont I use off sets thay don't brack bones on the leg off cats and dogs I catch my rats I set for I use closed jaws
What do you use the microwave for??
I totally agree. Been saying this for decades. Our game departments started this crap by try to appease the antis rather than telling them to get lost, go cry to their mommy.
Good video Stu. Thanks
I thought for sure he was gonna put his hand in it.
Would be nice to use a wood top bench or carpeted steel table. that noise of trap on steel table annoying and loud!
Thanks! Myth Busted.
Good job brother kill the myth!!!!!
I love your videos and I mean all of them you do such a great host and haters gonna hate we need haters so we are not and to get pushed to do better
That same myth was around in the mid-1980s maybe earlier
Good videos but, you tend to prattle and repeat yourself a lot.
Why do you wear those big headphones out on the trap line?
Good information 👍
Shhhhh do say that out loud .. If the anti,s believe it , let the myth go on.. If it keeps them off our backs , that is a good myth .
Is the myth that dudes like skinny chicks?
Thankyou
Break out the nattys lol
Good point ! Thanks
Very good as always
Really glad you made this video and I learned a lot from it honestly, been trapping for 30 years now and always thought it noticed while running my coyote sets we slam a lot of fox. We always had less damage and chew outs with off set than closed and I always thought because the offset didn’t close as tight and allowed more blood flow to the paw making them feel the chew out so they did not as much. Thanks man for not only the explaining of the controversy but also the demonstration really well said! Tight chains and happy holidays
You are spot on man good job
If you could show a spring pressure test on each of those traps with the blocks of wood between the jaws, it would give a better understanding to everyone
Y’all is a boat
In the fur shed! Luv It
The exact same pressure on the jaws argument makes perfect sense...but doesn't offset jaws at least somewhat allow more blood flow through the foot since it isn't pinching on the actual foot as tight? That would be a difference you didn't mention, and less chance (in my mind at least) of an animal chewing its foot off. I am all about offset, though (as you mentioned) I have toe caught some critters in closed jaw traps that I suspect I would have missed with an offset.
Yes that is exactly right, by not closing all the way you aren't cutting the blood flow off which helps from keeping the foot go numb so the animal doesn't keep twisting and pulling. I had heard the chewing off the foot is a myth, it's actually the foot is numb and they don't feel the pulling and twisting.
@@Twixbar9Boom You guys still don't get it, if the leg is one inch thick, the jaws are still putting the same pressure. If the leg is one quarter inch thick the offset will hold with less pressure due to the quarter inch gap. That's the only way it makes a difference. The offset is used to just get the levers higher on the jaws to lock the trap better after a catch.
I use offset jaws and it has the same pressure because animals foots being held where the offset is made .
@@brettgalemagner We're not arguing that the pressure on the jaws isn't the same....we get that.
We're discussing how the offset may allow blood to continue to flow, and thus less damage occurs internally in the foot due to that. The paw wouldn't go as numb since some blood flow can still happen and the foot in theory won't freeze as easily.
Makes sense!!
I’m new.
I agree but will say certain traps are definitely easier on your catch traps like the mb-550 with thick cast jaws don’t harm the foot like others with thin narrow steel jaws
Great video with great explanation.
As far as actual requirements go.
Think your also correct. Think more political than practical. Especially these days where it seems every traditional outdoor activity is under attack by clueless people, that end up doing more harm than good.
Kinda like nominating an ecoterrorists for a spot in the Dept. Of Interior. 😨
Keep up the good work!👍👍
I'm building your skinning machine out of wood and a way smaller/cheaper winch, wish me luck. Felt like I broke my wrist last coon I skinned. It was still half frozen though...lol.
Great video once again Stu. You should do a video on baits and lures for canines, just a thought, would like to get your take on that topic
Trapping is my favorite thing to do and you have gave me a lot of advice
I think the main reason we even have offsets is because some egghead thought it would be “best management procedures” so then everyone jumped on the wagon. My state changed the law a few years back from rubber to steel but the jaws need to be offset or 1/4” thick or both. That’s the only reason I own any. I feel the same way you do about them. Great video brother! 👍
I use Bridger number 2 I was getting way more foot damage with offsets than with regular Jaws where they cut the offset out is usually sharp I started file it smooth help on the foot damage
Love all your content! I would love to see a video about the variation in pelts regarding value. Coons and coyote especially. What makes one pelt worth more than another? Size obviously, but what about fur variations? Thanks so much for all your help! P.S. I caught my first coyote yesterday and am ABSOLUTELY ADDICTED!
I would agree with you if what I catch had a 3/4 inch thick paw but a coyote does not have that. I catch a lot of coyotes on the paw and the toes. You can’t tell me that the offset doesn’t work in that situation. You can actually move the foot in-the trap while completely closed.
They claim the offset is to allow blood flow to the foot . Tight grip can cut off circulation therefore causing damage to foot if you catch undesirable animal's and need to release
Excellent information. Thanks. Keep them coming. I subscribed a while back !
Hey brother, I think you’re in Illinois. Are you and yours safe and sound after those tornadoes?
I believe that the main reason for offset jaw is the perception that it is a more humane trap….. I use them in my area because it is what is legal…… they work OK ……
Great video and well explained. I like this series and look forward to more of your videos
I was told that the offset allowed some blood flow to foot, which would cause less chance of chew outs or foot damage. Maybe that's part of this myth also, not sure. I just prefer offset for the reason of when I started had problems with raccoons and 1 1/2 traps.
What do you think of the rubber jaw/ padded traps? I was told that they are worthless? True or not?
I’m guilty of this, thanks for the information Stu.
Thanks for the lesson from someone new to legholds. The myth is what I always thought was the case.
Footholds actually
Could you do a video about lure/bait selection for land trapping? (Or if you make your own)
had a friend that picked up a few # 2 coils that someone had welded a small button on the inside of each jaw to offset them.he thought that was great until i pried open the jaws without touching the springs
Is it possible that the offset allows the blood flow to continue through the foot, which keeps the paw from freezing.
I’d be interested on your thoughts on scent control at the set , but that might start a war.lol
Good info. Still sticking with my closed jaw traps. Hang a few by the toes every year. Better than an empty trap.
Great info. Thanks for all you do with helping us who desire to become good trappers.
Just found your channel and glad to see someone generating interested in trapping. Need it now more than ever! I’m betting Turkey hunting in your neck of the woods has benefited from your efforts!
I showed my dad your last Video and he agreed with most of what you said, but he still questions the initial snap of the trap. In the case of a common house cat the bone could break in a regular jaw as compared to an off set where the jaws may touch, but the off set saves the bone. What would you say to that?
House cat bones are very bird like I have caught many cats in a dog proof traps and it breaks the bones every time ( dog proof I can show you plenty of fox in a DP . Ok back too the cats but I’ve never seen a broken bone on a coon I release small coons … or on a opossum or skunk . Cats bones are light and brittle .
@@stevedingman474 If you are trapping smart you wont be trapping close enough to catch a good pet with a foothold trap. That being said, any cat that you catch should not and has no buisines being out where they would get caught. Oh my, this will get someone wound up! lol
A laminated jaw will do more to protect dammage than offset.
If a person doesn't know what they're talking about then they should learn more before opening their mouth. You definitely know your Business!!!! Keep on trapping!!!
I think the benefit of offset jaws is that no matter how long the animal struggles, it won’t squeeze them down to nothing. So for a raccoon that steps in a Bridger 5 offset, it might not be able to get out, but the trap isn’t going to slowly cut its foot off either.
That makes a lot of sense. Thanks. I looked at offsets and just thought they would not crush a foot as bad. But I understand now that the lockup is the benefit and the crushing power of the trap on a foot will be the same. Thanks
Holding power not crushing power. If you see a trapped animal with a broken foot it's usually from the animal getting in an awkward position and breaking it, not the traps "crushing power"
@@dublelung1 Thanks. I am new to this so I appreciate the information.
I always thought it was just less likely to break a leg bone, never thought about the lever going up higher, makes perfect sense.
I watched one guy pretending to prove they wont hurt...by sticking his hand in a large trap.he obviously had weakened the springs with heat because he released it with his other hand? I hope no dummies try that test....they will get a real wake up if so.
Painting vs dying is a lot of conversion. The dp I leave dark brown strictly so people don't see them easily. I know trappers that paint foot holds and chains yellow or red so the can check with binoculars. Paint smell is nonexistent when dry. I'm a boiling in walnut guy but thinking about paint because I can't see as much as I used to. Any your thoughts would be appreciated 🙂
