I always found the scene where Adama walks through the hall way to be so powerful. This is what it looks like when a civilization dies, this is what it looks like when a society totally loses hope. The people Adam walks past who are all weeping, fighting, and have just given up. This really sells how bleak the situation is and then realizing that Adama, the man who has been a rock for this whole series, is looking for a way to get himself killed. This shows what a powerful show Battlestar Galactica was.
It's a great way of showing, not telling. Don't say "We've all lost hope" illustrate it.
This show never got the recognition it deserves! Yes, I know it is appreciated, but not enough! Also, I've been playing the boardgame for a while and it still is one of the best out there!
Yeah. When they found "Earth" destroyed, it was such a shocker not only to the characters, but to the audience as well. My jaw hit the floor.
@@SunnyGabe People booed at it when it was announced at a BG convention. “It couldn’t be better than the original”. It’ll be interesting to see how the next BG will be like.
This was just after they found Earth and it was all destroyed. Everyone lost hope.
You look at Saul Tigh season 1 and then Saul Tigh in this scene and the character has grown so much its unreal.
That was one of my favorite parts about BSG... everything ages.
The characters, the equipment, the ship... ESPECIALLY the ship.
You can look at the Galactica in the last episode and see the scars from every battle of the series. In the pilot everything is shiny and new (b/c it was restored in preparation to be a museum ship) and it gradually gets more rundown through the series.
That just doesn't happen in SciFi. (Except for maybe in the Expanse)
Casting Olmos was a decision of pure genius!
He was great on Miami Vice!!!
@@6120mcghee I first saw him as Gaff in Blade Runner in the 90s. Couldnt say to have been impressed. But years later on BSG I just thought wow! Hell of an actor. Fits perfectly to the role...
Apparently he was very hesitant about doing a sci-fi series but they talked a lot about what type of show it would be. He said that he would have Adama drop dead and then walk straight off the set if he saw a single alien or space monster.
@@usul573 Understandable. Every alien movie after Scotts/Gigers Alien was pathetic. Even the Alien movies after "Aliens" were pathetic...
@@usul573 sort of limited the scope of the show though
I tell people I'm into scifi. They roll their eyes, but do they know that they're missing scenes like this? No, they'll probably never know.
C’est la vie...
Their loss.
wtf
this isn't scifi. it is a historical documentary.
the sci-fi channel fracked up sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad with their prequel idea that they had to change their name hahaha, why couldn't they learn from Star Wars' prequel mistake? I saw Blood and Chrome and it was great! and firefly gets cancelled and dark matter gets cancelled.. then netflix makes another life and it's the worst thing I've ever seen on film... just sad
Powerful scene. For just a bit the armor crashes down and it's just two tired old men who have been through too much.
The fate of what is left of humanity is all on their shoulders. One mistake, one bad decision and it's all over. No wonder there are moments when it's just too much to bear.
Seeing Bill like this, utterly broken, it hurts.
I'm trying to remember if TNG ever had a moment where it felt like the beginning of this clip. Place is a mess, people are crying everywhere, graffiti is happening, people are beating the shit out of each other, and Bill doesn't give a single fuck.
Nope, would never have even been considered!
@@usul573 if it was it was it was no doubt due to some external force like an alien parasite or spacial anomaly, and it will have been resolved within 45 minutes with room for a B plot.
@@DrewLSsix Sometimes it's funny when there is something so dramatic but you just know the last two scenes will wrap it up quickly. Pat TV endings are common when a TV show is episodic.
@@usul573 It really shows you how much Adama, a man who didn't really believe that Earth existed, became a believer in Earth right when it was too late.
Every man has his breaking point.
"Sorry, Bill. This is one time I can't help you."
Its a good thing they brought an unlimited supply of alcohol with them in space.
StegaSquirtle by then it was paint thinner.
Bing Bongs Badabing or whatever is right. Nasty but did the trick.
The distillery ship, that ship had the most up to date ftl drive next to C1 and BSG.
I think you underestimate the human spirit. Pun intended haha. Just look at every era of humanity, whether it be one that is prosperous or one wracked with starvation. Humanity finds a way to escape. Be it alcohol which is the easiest or more advanced means, its a part of life. It doesn't surprise me that they have bottles on bottles ready, at that point they must be producing it from scraps like nothing, just like the middle ages.
Where were they getting all this booze?!
@@carlycrays2831 Originally the black market had metric tons of it. Later they build a small destillery on Galactica, nothing stopping some civvies from building a big one and selling the stuff.
The marine who turned over his sidearm might have been the most calm guy on the ship at that moment.
always respected the marines on the show, they held the line, minimal drama.
Will always remember this scene. It was cathartic for the characters. They'd almost come full circle with Adama drunk and Saul sober. I've never seen a point in a series that brought things down to such a low point, where they're on the bones of their ass with nothing left to hope for and then this scene happens. They get back on the road with nothing to lose, tell the Cylons allied to them to join for the ride and eventually find Earth.
our definition of "cathartic" greatly differs.
A drunkard keeps insulting my... wife? daughter? someone, proudly proclaimes who he fucked her, and doesnt get his dick shot off, is not "cathartic"
100%! Its like watching a bomb with its fuse lit but you dont know how long until.....I mean god damn seriously this scene for real I was fully prepared for it to go either way! I mean he could have opened that hatch, pointed that pistol at his head and pulled the trigger. It would have sucked..I mean really REALLY sucked but it was kinda maybe a little bit expected...or something like it but then holy shit we get this scene! The tension! But man I remember saying to myself when this season aired around this episode especially...everyone is super depressed...and for damn good reason but even on Galactica...even members of the military...god it was depressing to watch.
@@texteel Yes a drunkard who is your best friend and your commanding officer, who is clearly suicidal at the thought of his best friend being an enemy (the entire time) who they have been fighting for the entire show. Something tells me you are a bit slow on the uptake.
@@Bennett2142 its okay. The very same thing tells me you are way too forgiving.
"Can I take your kidney? Im sure you will understand, K thanks bye!"

First time I ever noticed that. As Adama is walking through the passageway, openly holding a gun, the pilot sitting on the stairs actually moves his hand to his holster, ready to draw in case Adama snapped and started shooting indiscriminately.
always wonder how many times the glass fell of the table when he pushed it over..
Now that you mention it, I don't think he was supposed to slide it that far across the table.
Tigh reacted really suddenly to it so I think he was scared it was gonna spill on him :D
@@T3DNR3D Yea, he briefly jerked a bit, so that wasn't really planed but they decided to go with it.
I feel like they got that on the first take. EJO is a method actor who fully gets into the moment. If you have a scene with him - you damn well better be in it as well.
@@Ladco77 Yeah I agree- probably happened that way the first time Olmos shoved it across the table- Tigh's knee-jerk reaction is very real.
A heard a story that in a few of these scenes they had actually drunk liquor & were either buzzed or drunk in the scenes
Sit down Cylon!!! LOL!
00:02 i bet the guard was like oh shit something is gonna go down.
More likely he stopped really caring
A few episodes later these besties are giggling
Tigh: “Grandpappy was a sandblaster” 😂
What a pivotal scene. Powerhouse performance.
Wish this had the end of the scene with Adams’s story of his uncle and the fox, it’s like the best part of the whole scene
Michael Hogan was excellent as Tigh. It's a shame what happened to him. Hopefully he'll be able to work again in some capacity, but even if he doesn't, his castmates and the fans have his back.
Wait, what happened?
@@allenharper2928 He fell off a ladder 2 years ago and hit his head. Suffered serious brain damage. The effect was equivalent to severe stroke. Paralysis on one side of his body, impaired speech and some other problems as well. His quality of life is not good.
@@DLordSadow Damn. I've loved literally everything he's been in, from BSG to Mass Effect.
Also, hate that I've been so far out of the loop for so long I didn't even know this.
My dad had a similar accident two years ago and was able through physical therapy and speech therapy to come back he has no short-term memory basically but can remember everything from his childhood etc
I could feel the friction especially with Adama it felt genuine!!!! Kinda like you’re bestie doing the dirty with your missus
wow, did you see that? he takes the grunt's sidearm and as he loads a mag he tells him "keep it loaded", now that is a detail you'd never see anywhere else, as a prior military guy I really enjoyed this show..partly because of moments like that, they had some experts on set and I never feel that way about the other space shows at all, great scene, the old men having a one on one, you get to see how strong tigh is and how vulnerable adama really is, he can't show weakness at that position but he needs someone to lean on like everybody else, imagine being the skipper in charge of keeping the last of the human race alive...oh and the whole cylon talk is a legit complaint haha
Sorry for the one-year late reply, but...the magazine was already loaded in the gun. But it's like you said: it's realistic because the Marine was relinquishing his sidearm and, as the most basic of firearms safety precautions dictates, he was ejecting the magazine before handing it over. That's why Adama says "Keep it loaded!". The Marine just slams it back in and Adama then chambers the first round himself.
10/10 attention to detail!
Kinda have to be that guy since youse are talking about accuracy but if it was already loaded then he wouldn't have had to rack it and a round would have popped out when he did so
@@razorxlvii4852 you're right, I worded that wrong
@@rannnoch the guy was taking the mag out before handing it to adama, never had one chambered, then he popped it back in and adama racks it, but I've seen shows rack it twice, movies do it often, even with shotguns, it's pretty funny
@@wheelmanstan Yeah I get you but it's still weird that he would have it loaded but not chambered already, they could have even dropped a line like "keep the safety off", especially given the state of fleet morale and crew discipline
The acting in this scene is fucking insane.
Totally agree this is one of my favourite scenes of the series.
The Oldman man suffering so much being tricked all this time, and yet Tigh is still his one true friend!
I agree, some of the best acting and actors' performance I have ever seen in my life!
DO IT
Edward James Olmos dunked on everybody in this series.
He didn’t want to do the show at first. He didn’t want it to be all futuristic. And then when they told him it’s going to be old school tech he decided to take the part.
I love rewatching scenes and noticing all the small details commonly overlooked on the first viewing. Like during adamas walk there was a pilot sitting on the stairs and as he sees adama walking up with purpose, sidearm in hand you see the pilot transitions his right hand down to his sidearm.. for what reason isn’t precisely clear but I’d like to think the pilot was gearing up to back up adama but realized it wasn’t “that kind of situation”.. idk why I find it interesting, but i do
3:42. That face is fucking priceless
Such a magnificent show. Few, if any, tv shows have put the protagonists into such utter despair that even their admiral wanted to die.
My heart sank, when he was reaching for the other cup of alcohol. And enjoyed it.. 😭😭
SOOOO PERFECT! FANTASTIC PERFORMANCES ! Adama was teflon through everything, this broke him. Ill hate the Cylons forever.
the best acting EVER!
1- Adama looked posessed at Tigh. 2- NOT THE BOOZE!!!!
This is a truly great series.
At first I thought this was Adama tricking Tigh into pulling himself together. Kind of like Kirk berating Spock to overcome the spores in 'This Side Of Eden'. A lot of actors would never allow their character to be seen this way. I suppose Olmos wasn't a traditional leading man/main star, so he didn't have that hang-up.
i loved this scene so much
Jesus I mean when this first aired.."tension in the room" doesn't eve begin to describe it. I mean sure we would have hated it, and it would have sucked but man if Bill pulled out that pistol and put two rounds in Saul's head......dare I say it - justified? Thats not the right word but you know what I mean. Seriously...this scene (after its build up) could have gone in ANY direction....god damn I miss this show!
You couldn't blame him if he did. He wasn't just mad at Saul being a cylon, he was mad that the guy who was his best friend lied to him after everything.
@@carlycrays2831 yup! Thats what I mean..so much I mean SO MUCH to think about - questioning EVERY SINGLE THING or event or moment with the man who you love the most in life...besides family. His best friend..fuck how many times did he save his life and the other way around? GOD! lol and this scene nails it!
You dont have the GUUUTZ!
Such a great scene.
*How to not get murdered by Adama* just have some alcohol
Tigh and Adama would go into battle to save each other. They are best friends to the end.
What a perfect slide.
Conflict resolution, BSG style: brings alcohol and a gun. Plays Russian Roulette with an automatic. Adama doesn't fuck around.
To be fair, though, I think it would have played out just fine, regardless.
Adamas don't seem to die when they're shot by their comrades *or* the enemy (sometimes both at the same time for all the reasons).
Maybe the gun would have jammed.
Thank you, Uncle Tigh.
This was the last episode they filmed before the writers strike happened back then. If the strike went on much longer, the series wouldn't have been able to continue and this would have been the final episode...
Arkalius80 that was actually the episode prior iirc
@@TheMainCore1 The prior one was the last to air before the strike but they had shot this one.
This is the first episode back from the strike it’s episode 10 of 20 the last half of season 4
Best Sci Fi Ever!
I love these two. Even the best of friends fight.
This isn’t “sci-fi”; this is the grittiest Western series set on a spaceship and unknown planets that has ever been produced.
Why can't scifi be that in your mind?
Best actiong I've ever saw 11/10
It hurts my soul watching these powerful actors play through the story line and it is so good.
I want to know how many takes this scene took from them breaking character, I imagine Edward James Almos laughing at some point during his lines lol!
Frack I realllllllllllly need to watch this series. I missed out as a kid.
In season two now. Adama is God. Lol
Every time he puts the gun to his head I laugh my ass off
Next to the “Deckard and Batty’s dialogue”, this places a very close second!
that glass of whisky so very nearly slid off the table.........very classy.
God whenever Adama is angry....scared isnt the right word. The tension!!!
More importantly, it's like _you are standing just near that bomb._
It's Edward James Olmos... He has literally the ur example of "quiet rage". He doesn't raise his voice, but can hear every bit of anger in every syllable he utters, in the very inflection of his voice. It's brilliant.
“Grandfather was a toaster!” 🤣🥃🥃🥴
How the FRAK did this scene not garner an Emmy for both of them?
Institutional bias against sci-fi and other "genre" shows. For decades the only actors to ever win Emmys in sci-fi roles were Lindsay Wagner and Gillian Anderson. Leonard Nimoy was nominated.
OK? Now, I want you all to think about the dialogue and the acting in the billion dollar Amazon production called 'The Rings of Power'. Each episode cost between 50 and 60 million dollars to make. In 2004 each episode of BSG cost around $1 million.
It's not about the money, it's about(Drinker voice)..tHa MesSaGe!
The Old man at his lowest is very hearthbreaking to see
This is such a good character scene for Adama. It's the reverse of a typical character arc - since we first saw him Adama has been unflappable, he's known what to do, he's been a rock for others. But here he has become so worn down that he's pathetic, hateful and detestable. It's framed like an attack on Saul but really he's reaching out to the person he trusts most to help him through this. And at this point their dynamic has flipped, suddenly Saul is the one talking sense and in control of his emotions.
It is amazing that there are people who actually think that Star Trek TNG was "nerdy" and this was "realistic".
No other TV series was more nerdy than BG.
And I thought I've seen EVERY episode ? LOL
Take notes people. This is how you act.
Best mental breakdown this side of Walter White completely losing his shit.
Rule of thumb psychology.
I came here looking for a scene before this, im just getting through season 3 right now. Was looking for when Adama confronts Starbuck and Tigh in the rec for being malcontents. Told them them to get in line or shoot him. That was a good scene. He threw Kara out of her chair
I wonder if there are bloopers of the glass slide scene to Saul, that looked like it almost fell
Life.
Who knew FN five-seven was the Colonial side arm issued? The more you know!
If anything deserves it, it's five seven.
Lotta props from the Stargate set used on BSG. 5-7, P90, Beretta carbine....
I always think it looks like the Socom from Metal Gear Solid.
A great scene, in a great show, but my favorite will always be when Captain Adama and President Rosslyn are passing a fatty in sick bay.
Give me your side arm. FRACKING NOW.
Best show on ever. Bar....none.
It’s funny how Tigh is like Jim Lahey
Honestly this is one of the best acted scenes of all time. Like, I would have to write a 2,000 word essay on just the relationship between them. I know I’m showing my age, but you just don’t see this anymore.
I'd be a millionaire by now if i received a dollar for every single one of these posts
Not the best scene - 'great grandpa was a power-sander'. All that needs to be said/quoted!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
a "TV SHOW"...
better than ALL the DC, and MOST of the Marvel movies!
The one thing I still remember is what Adama said in the first episode after the mini-series: "It’s one thing to push the crew, it’s another thing to break ’em."
To think that would foreshadow pretty much the entire show up until this point.
Frakennnn nowwwww
When your best friend, someone you have always loved for decades, was a fraud. Luckily it turns out okay.
Blood in the main vein...😅
*_frakken NOW_*
The one thing that makes no sense in BSG is that none of those people ever wonder if Cylons were not basically humans. Considering they are undistinguishable from people, how is it that none of the protagonist ever wonders if they might be just synthetic humans with free will and so on and so forth? They keep refering to them as if they were pieces of hardware, which makes imo very little sense.
It depends on which characters but they have different reasons to not wanting to admit or even consider Cylon to have feelings. Helo didn't care anymore once he's got a daughter coming. The higher ups like Adama and the president can't show it because they think that's what the "enemies" want them to think that. They don't have the luxury to consider the enemies feelings when they have to deal keeping the fleet alive and from falling a part. Other than that most just hate the cylons for the situation they're in and every day on the run reminds them of it. When you hate someone, you don't really consider how they feel. All you want is getting even.
I think in this situation, so much loss has crippled thier ability to think more then just defense and survival.
Theres a psychological thing where people in an abusive survival type situation lose the ability for open creative thinking after a while. It's more an evolutionary protection mechanism.
I think you answered your own question. If the Cylons are synthetic, even though they may look human, they are not human.
It's based on a slave revolt. Where one side viewed their slaves as subhuman, trash, no rules apply to them. The slaves decide to kill their masters and everything goes to hell. Hera is like a biracial child.
Sci-fi racism. It was easier to dehumanise the Cylons because they began as "inhuman" (which is a pretty nebulous term anyway), so when human looking models came along they just assumed they were no more human than the subhuman slaves that led an uprising. The writing was kind of brilliant by using everyday words like "toaster" as racist slurs. And the thing about racists of the slave-owning kind is that, until they have a cultural revolution demonstrating the utter wrongness of their beliefs, they can rationalise pretty much anything.
this scene which episode?
What bill unruly crew
I'm still wondering. Why doesn't the captain have a sidearm?
FireOccator Adama is the Commander... He doesn't need one as he expects the Marines to defend
Trek001 that's not the sole purpose of an officers sidearm
Cain carried one at all times as far as I recall.
Some lead by example, others by force.
He is ADAMA. He needs no sidearm. Just his stare will do.
Dos actores de primera lo bordan
I always loved the original series but this scene was so powerful it just stayed with me for years on end. Edward James Olmos and Michael Hogan were just so perfect and precise it can not be better.
Adama vs Tigh beats Gandalf vs Saruman any day in old men fighting
DISAGREE...the best scene in the entire series was when they executed Felix Gaeta and Tom Zarek!!

That ain't no ice tea that's some bourbon boy lol
Why do they say frakking
So they can say "fuck" without saying it, for TV
@@Arkalius80 It's not for the swearing aspect. They say shit and son of a bitch a lot without giving a frack. It's just an in universe thing.
Overall great scene, but everything from "find a man who had real blood in his 'main vein'" to "OR I WILL" honestly just makes me laugh hysterically. It's so over the top and just felt like bad takes they didn't have time to reshoot.
I'm sure comedy wasn't what they were going for, but the scene is so ridiculously exaggerated I can't help by laugh
Given how totally and utterly hopeless Adama would have been, and how he would have been desperately trying to wind Tigh up so he’d shoot, and how people in similar mindsets will act “over the top” to get the reaction they want… it’s amazingly accurate to real life.
People just think it’s OTT because we don’t usually run into it in our lives, and it’s often “toned down” in films/tv for the exact reason you gave… that just means people have an expectation that isn’t realistic.
@@Crazalus Honestly I just think they used some bad takes. The scene is funny but shouldn't be. Feels like a blooper reel
