Esp. since it is, in a way, a reversed version of the scene from the pilot, showing how low has the crew fallen. Everybody cordial and happy, Adama walking towards the camera, high shot compared to the low one here. Technically, it is a cheap trick - but man it works 😊
Humanity needed a planet that it could survive and thrive on before all its resources were lost. It can’t live on a rust bucket for the rest of eternity. Dee never moved down to New Caparica because it wasn’t the promised land and she knew it would only ever be a temporary solution. Bill made a promise in order to keep hope alive and when his promise came to pass it came with no hope. The future for humanity was living the rest of our existence either being killed by the enemy, dying from radiation or wasting away on derelict ships with no hope via any option. Dee cracked because the hope of Bill’s promise wasn’t there. And he blames himself for that. Forced onto a journey from our burning homes with an endless enemy picking us off one by one and we have a glimmer of hope that there is a safe haven with people like us who can help. Along the way we get a brief respite from the enemy, then the journey begins again. We finally find the port of call, but it’s a wasteland fit for nothing. And so the journey begins anew without end. Pretty much seems like the right time to give up.
I have to re-watch this thing. So many great moments, from the Adama maneuver to "We're not a society, we're a gang and we're on the run!" the show ran the gamut, loyalty, family, honor, love, law, war, it covered every corner of the human experience unlike any show I've ever seen. So great.
Dan Brown, His reaction to seeing her body when he lifted the sheet. The pain, shock, and revulsion etched on his face. Showing what a devastating gut punch this proved, leading him to give up. In an interesting way, perhaps the same type of last straw that Gaeta probably felt when he came so close to witnessing what Dee was about to do, but not knowing it was about to happen and being totally unable to prevent it.
2:14 - I'm sorry, I know it's a serious moment, but that was such a SICK slide across the table for the glass, and Tigh looks like he's grateful the thing didn't end up in his lap.
This scene and the following conversation is easily my favorite moment of the entire series. To see Adama at his lowest point, finally broken after everything, and for Tigh to pull him back from the edge and remind him of his purpose. Chef's kiss.
In a show where everyone is losing everything, everyone has a breaking point. This was tremendous writing and acting, and one of the reasons this show has stood the test of time. It wasn't perfect, but man, it was GOOD!
Easily by itself, Sometimes A Great Notion is one of the top ten (or even five) episodes of Battlestar Galactica. Considering the Galactica crew had already lost so much, and to then lose the hope of Earth, it's like what is there really left to live for?
I had a lot of dark thoughts as a teenager (like many do), thought frequently about killing myself and planned out how i want to do it. Then one evening we were watching TV and there was something about suicide and i expressed my sympathy with the victim and my father snapped and ranted how selfish suicide is and how damaging to those who are left behind, that there is nothing worse than having your child kill itself and being left with all the inevitable guilt and questions until you die. It didn't ease my feelings and i continued to struggle for some time, but i never forgot what he said, and more importantly, how he said it. I still tear up when i think about it, how much my family loves me and how much i love them really shines through in moments like that. This scene is pretty hard to watch. Adama was a father to many in his crew, Dee included, and he failed them. It's not true, but this is what he will be feeling, forever.
Little bit of alcohol on the gun as he held it to his temple. Good continuity. And a beautiful turn, where Tigh sees that Adama is in a place where he has been for much of his life.
Dee was a favourite of mine. Such a good show. I was so heartbroken when she passed, especially considering I’ve been suicidal and tried to take my own life several times.
These two episodes are so gruelling and amazing. Watching Adama wing through so many emotions, denial over saul, a breakdown at deciding to airlock him, triumph at the arrival on earth then back into despair with Dees death. It's hard to watch but so good!
They actually created a moonshine still on Galactica. What I want to know is how they all keep getting cigarettes and cigars lol they'd have to have a flying greenhouse for that.
The friendship between Tigh and Adama was one of the best parts of the series. No matter how badly things got frakked up, they still had each other's back.
The wise fatherly figure is, interestingly, one variant of a captain that has not been displayed in Star Trek yet. Pike is coming close, but he's not there yet.
@@danielk5780My first thought was to wonder about Janeway, gender aside. Similar situation and the show at least stated that Voyager was run like a family. But aside of her relationship with Seven or maybe Tom, she still kept much more of a healthy distance to his crew, while Adama is immensely emotionally compromised and regularly risks the ship for single crewmembers (mostly Starbuck). But yeah, Pike in that regard is very much like a somewhat younger and less guarded Adama. Just look at the original The Cage pilot and how the death of several crewmen affected him so much, he contemplated leaving Starfleet to avoid it all. Both are brilliant officers heavily burdened by their emotional investment.
this wasn't sci fi or fantasy, it was real drama set in space. We never talked about the engines or shield frequencies or tachyons ( I love star trek though). We only focused on people and their stories.
The vocals on the soundtrack at the beginning of the clip was actually performed by Kandyse McClure and it was what she was humming throughout the previous scenes on the beach and before she ended it. It adds incredible weight to what is already a very heavy scene.
I know its just a show, a bit of fiction on tv. But god's dammit, Dee's death still brings me to tears. Same as Billy's does. Such a great show. Excellent
The cylon final 5 twist wasn't my favorite. Or the starbuck conclusion. This is in my top 5 favorite shows of all time though. Not in order- DS9,Babylon 5,Battlestar,sapranos,GOT. Id also say Exosquad, but thats a cartoon.

Spoiler alert lol if you're asking this after the start of season 3. But yeah, the fleet and the Rebel Cyclons find the 13th Colony, but surprise, its a nuclear wasteland after their own robot uprising, but double surprise, its ancient organic Cylons. At this point, the fleet goes through a very depressive state, and Dee even goes through killing herself.
I mean, to be fair they've been on the run for years from genocidal robots who want them all dead, had one safe harbor to go to, and then upon finding it, discover... that they made the exact gods-dammed same mistakes and that there is no safe harbor left. They had lost the last desperate shred of hope that had kept them going after losing their entire culture, friends, family, and homes to live in cramped, filthy, breaking-down ships. I'd get drunk as a skunk too.
After the 12 colonies fell, they spent so long searching for the 13th colony (Earth) to hopefully find the last hope of refuge for humanity, only to discover the colony was destroyed
Also literally just probably under an hour ago ship's time Dualla who was like a daughter to him killed herself, and he is blaming himself for letting not just her down but the whole fleet on leading the last of Colonials to an utterly destroyed and irradiated Earth and thus leading them unto death.
