Simple Backhand Setup
Вставка

- Today we are going to look at a super simple backhand setup to keep you efficient. This is where I start with most of my student's. Of course there are alternate ways to do this and if you are successfully doing something different then you may not want to change it. But if you're looking to build or simplify, here is my recommendation.

I'm just gonna use my standard comment (for the algorithm): you guys are just absolutely killing it. I can't get enough. I've played more than 5 years as a disc golf addict and I'm absolutely still learning from you.
For the algorithm!
The way you describe this is the first time where I might get what everyone means by creating the whip effect.
Hey it’s Swami. My BFF said to subscribe to your channel. I’m here and can’t wait to learn.
Some of the greatest stuff on youtube atm and know that you're helping people get better by incorporating your techniques. Thank you so much guys!
Makes complete sense to me! Now I know why I have such a natural hyzer release! Thank you!
Lol, I think you showing a throw with the steps you mention really helps some of us put it together in our minds. For me I learn extremely well through visuals, so you demonstrating a throw using the drill/technique you mention helps me a lot.
Again thank you. Please keep it up😁 very helpful.
This was uuper helpful. Thanks!
You're a great teacher. Loved this video.
Thank you. Very simple.
Nice one! Thank you
I'm going to have to give it a try. Your videos have helped me gain very modest distance but definitely more consistenty
great explanation. simple is good!
Just what I was looking for! Subscribed.
Perfect timing as always, I was working on my setup and the slappy bird this morning. Count me as a weirdo who enjoys seeing you put all the pieces together and throw. I hope I can get down there and have a in person lesson soon. Thanks Josh and Mikey! P:S Loved the split screen! Very helpful.
Really appreciate the use of filming different angles. Great content guys!
I’ve watched a ton of disc golf videos and only now got to the Twirly Bird and your other form unlocks. I felt like I needed to get through a lot of basics first but now these are absolute technique fuel. Can’t wai to work on this in the field.
Excellent tip on creating elbow space! When I feel I lost my “snap” I get that elbow out and the snap comes right back.
Amazing videos, just got into disc golf 3 weeks ago now.
fantastic!
as always, great stuff. appreciate you
Thanks for the continued support Brett
This is amazingly helpful. I'm a beginner forehand dominant player and have been trying to develop my backhand for more versatility but when working on my form it always feels so awkward. This video addressed all of the issues I was having with my run up. I'm super excited to implement this new form later today
Very informative video. I've been putting this setup into practice over the past few days and I've gone from a max of about 220 ft to a new personal record of 309 ft! I'm looking forward to diving into more of your videos and improving my game. Thank you for what you do!
So simple:yet so hard:(. Going to try and get this down this winter and hopefully make it feel natural by the Spring.
Keep the instructions coming!!
Yes I always want to see you crank on one at the end of each video. Also video of you playing a round at one of your local favorite courses.
Seeing you break it down like this makes it so much easier for me to understand! Thanks again, my friend.
Anytime brotha
Best disc golf instructional videos out there. You guys do great work.
Thanks Evan. We appreciate the kind words
Great video as always! Learning so much from you guys! It's really helping my game
Happy to help!
Taking up the game late in life I'm set in a standstill position. That last segment of the throw looks like a good way to build consistency in my drives.
Thrilled that you did this video. I just figured this out a few weeks ago on my own and am glad to have some confirmation that it is a good strategy. Over my first 20 years of playing, I kept the disc at the center of my chest, reached back, and then pulled into the center of my chest. When I learned about the box or power pocket, I realized that doing it the old way kept my upper arm at a 135 degree angle to my chest instead of 90 degrees. The simple change of starting with my disc at my left pec (RHBH) helped me focus on throwing my disc with my upper torso rotation than with my arm.
Your content is so easy to understand. Keep up the great work and I will keep sending people your way!
Thanks Mike! We appreciate the continued support brother.
As a forehand dominant thrower I've always been mystified by backhand, thanks for clearing up a lot of misconceptions!!
Thank you
Thanks man
Thank you for this! I've been struggling to get any real distance, throwing 175 to 225'. Watched this, went to the course and immediately got results. I'm still not winning any distance competitions but was throwing around 300' consistently with a new best of 315'.
Wow. 75’ increase. That’s insane. Good work.
As always thank you for the knowledge bombs 💣
Thanks brotha
Really digging the split screen. You guys are killing it.
Mikey got another tripod so we can do that now. Thanks Rick
I’m commenting to help the algorithm and to just say that your guy’s videos have helped me so much!
Thanks for the comment! We appreciate you
Best part of this video "maybe we'll find out someday a flat release is best, I don't know." I love it. We should all always be learning, be willing to look at new ideas and keep trying to improve. One of the best DG channels out there-- keep making great content!
It’ll be interesting to see where coaching and mainline form ends up in the next couple years that’s for sure
WOW. This was so eye-opening! I am definitely doing 3:10-3:30. I can't wait to tackle this!
Get it
One of the best DG channels out there!!! Keep it up guys… With all your videos, I am now able to throw 469’ with my Enigma and 378’ with my P Model S (on flat ground, lasered) You guys are the best!!!
Send some of that distance my way
Standard comment: video rocks! UA-cam algorithm domination. Let’s go overthrow
Wish I would have see. This video when I first started five years ago hahaha
Throwing the disc It helps me get an idea in full motion also.
excellent break down, anyone who's played other sports can relate, I played hoops so its just like a free throw same motion every time, I will put to practice thanks from Sweden
Tack!
Always learning, always improving. Good stuff here - simple explanation clearly demonstrated. Why isn't there a second thumbs-up?
So simple, but so hard! :)
now, another 10.000 throws ...
Very helpful..another "click" moment! Yiu guys as always rock! Thanks mang!!
Yeah mang!
In 10 years, we're going to look back on these videos as the absolute 101 for how it's done. Josh's face on Mt. Discmore...
Heading up to play in a few. I will put this to work
Let us know how it goes
@@OverthrowDiscGolf it helped, but I still feel like I'm tensing up and not quite hitting the power pocket like I need to be.
@@Justin-tp3lr yeah, staying loose is the hardest thing to learn and do consistently.
First! to say great tip, thanks.
Great angles on this. I’ve felt sore in my shoulder tricep area before …. I think I was keeping my elbow too close in. #quantent
"pooled", Im always learning new words lol
We’re innovative here
Good stuff, fellas. I'd been doing this for a while except sans the left hand on the disc; started to keep that hand on the disc after one of the first few form reviews and the difference is very noticeable. Absolutely makes a difference in helping to prevent my arm from tiring/cramping up before the swing and IMO also helps to minimize botched timing by keeping everything where it needs to be.
Off-topic, but curious if yall think there's any good/valuable content in doing a video about footwear? Seems like there's multiple posts a day on the subreddit asking for shoe recommendations, so the interest is there. Just wondering if your tennis background gives you any extra insight into what type of characteristics someone would want out of a shoe where your planting your foot and shifting weight around. I've heard quite a few people talk about how they play in indoor soccer shoes and I'm not sure if that's more because they work well or just because those are just the shoes people happen to have on hand. I'm pretty sure those types of shoes are all zero drop with really solid traction, so it seems like there'd be something to it. Anyway, didn't mean to write a novel. keep up the good fight, yall.
I agree with the "Disc Kicks" discussion vlog. I've had this thought for awhile now. Similar to how in depth Doth Savek does with his bag reviews. I'd also love to hear pro's reasonings for why they wear what they wear and if they have shoe sponsors or not. 😎👍
Oh interesting note at the end, that's the adjustment I do sometimes
nice > 300ft on standstill!
somehow i figured this out on my own but i call it the fine dining waiter because its like in old movies where the waiter has his arm in the power pocket but a napkin on top waiting to serve. nice work
Oh I like it. I should have been send that as a thumbnail
@@OverthrowDiscGolf thanks, your vids are very helpful
👍👍👍
I have to adjust to this for sure. It has taken me a year to get more relaxed on the upper body, but I now notice I occasionally hit my chest on the uncoil. (Slappy bird gone too far.....lol) So I need to be out a little. And keep the shoulder at 90 degrees. I suspect by being too loosey goosey the shoulder angle has narrowed at that key point.
Too loose is a great place to start.
What are your thoughts on starting out with your shoulders parallel to the target line with a 3 step approach? I find I'm more accurate this way and adding another step gives me very little gain in distance.
Definitely a good starting point and you can probably get pretty far in your disc golf career doing it. Facing the target allows you to snap your hips back and forward quickly.
Ah so that why my wide rail works for me, probebly that elbow being to tucked when not using it. Cheers for clearing that up! One thing tho about wide rail seems to be that its hard to hold on to the disc longer since all the acceleration comes at the very end of the throw and its easy to releases early instead. Feels like the trick with widerail distance is to hold on to it longer or what do you think about that? Squeeze disc even tighter?
Yes. That’s why wide rail works for most people imo. As to your question, I would advise you to feel the swing path and see where it naturally wants to come out. I don’t think a tighter grip would help.
Thanks for all the great content. Love it. Patreon Membership Level Question: Advanced says "30-minute lesson (monthly)", Pro says "1 hr. Coaching Session (monthly)". Is the difference just the amount of time or is a lesson different from coaching? Also, can you do coaching remotely for someone across the country?
I’ll fix the wording on that. The only difference is the time given. And yes to the virtual lessons
Ok, so, I'm fairly new to DG (and mid-40s) and I hurt my shoulder less than a year into learning. I'm through PT and feeling better and forcing myself to rebuild my drive entirely to avoid re-injury. Your vids are phenomenal in terms of emphasizing the lower body being the source of power and your drills are great. I am forcing myself to fully relearn RHBH, from standstill. Can you tell me a realistic distance one should be able to throw consistently with good aim using this simplified form before adding more to the mechanics? My plan is to go from full standstill to stepping forward into the brace, then on from there. Looking for tips on progression.
Hey man, I went through the same as you when I started disc golf a year ago. I was throwing with my arm and hurt it pretty bad about 5-7 times, went to PT, and recovered. One thing you will discover if you haven't already, throw from the ground up, not your arm. That will prevent further injuries. I wish more beginner tutorials would emphasize this.
As for distance, I'm throwing 225' - 270' from a stand still with very decent aim. I have been throwing standstill for a year and I am just starting an x-step on some drives. Overthrow videos has some of the best tutorials out there and you won't need much more to get better. There is a Foundation Disc video about throwing standstill I have found very helpful and you might too. It sounds like your on the right path. Keep learning and keep throwing.
sorry for the late response here. Don't know how I missed this earlier.
Progression I would imagine in your case would look like a standstill, to a 3 step walkup, to a full walkup. You can do a one step like I showed in the Slappy Bird drill if you feel like that would bridge the game better between the one and three step. As for distance to expect, I'm not sure. Depends on a lot of things but you can judge based of the throw in the same drill if you'd like. Other than that, I would just be guess work on my end.
@@bosta84 would you mind linking the video? I searched the channel. Is it one in their beginner playlist? Thanks for your info. Sounds exactly like my current plan so it's good to hear that reinforced. I agree, I really wish I knew from the beginning know how dangerous "pulling" is. Every UA-camr who purports to teach form should have a pinned or promoted video addressing that.
@@OverthrowDiscGolf yeah, Slappy Bird has been a help. Twirly Bird also. Goofy names, great drills! I've been averaging 250' from standstill and was just wondering if it is time to move up to a single step. I'll spend as much time as needed standstill if there is still room to grow without rushing.
@@shawnkimball5019 I would try it if I were you. You can always go back to a standstill if it doesn’t work but no need to stay back unnecessarily
Speak to me. I feel like I have a problem with starting with my elbow/arm to low and definitely run into the hitting my chest part when pulling thru from time to time. What angle should my upper arm be if throwing on a flat angle? I’ve notice my upper arm and shoulder tends to burn, the higher I try to keep my arm at address. When looking at videos of myself I tend to hunch over and I feel like that’s caused by trying to make room for my pull thru due to my low address and pull back?
Also, how do I sign up for your patreon? It’s only fair that I support at this point… with as many questions as I ask.
It’s okay to start it lower. Guys like Simon do that. They just create space by bending over like you mentioned. As for your question on angles for flat that is something you’ll have to find out. You don’t change the angle of your upper arm to alter that. You simply bend more or less at the waist.
There’s a link for Patreon in the description below.
One thing I have not incorporated into my backhand throw is the look back. I keep an eye on the flight path I'm planning. How do you keep your aim if you're taking your eyes off of the target?
Gotta get used to your release point and trust it
I’m struggling with the timing of when to best pull into the pocket… I’ve been trying to keep the coil as late as possible and bring the disc into the pocket right as or before my coil is released, which is about the time my front heal is planting. Is this right?
The disc doesn’t get pulled into the pocket. The uncoiling allows it to swing in there on its own. The drill for that is the Slappy Bird
A thing ive never understood, is that the pros start with the disc edge facing down, and they sort of swivel it to the correct angle during the throw. For me that adds just another variable to mess things up, and i dont think ill ever understand that. Youre doing the exact same thing in the video. Can you explain that to me, or do you have a video on it?
Been playing for a decade.. throw My backhand about 450 to 460 on my max distance (favorable wind) haha.. this is probably the best instructional video I've seen to date.. I feel like I could take some beginners out, teach this exact technical mechanic... depending on the person's athletic ability they could be throwing about 300 maybe even a bit more.. by the end of 18 holes
Thanks Shane. That’s our goal. Simple, repeatable form.
How far did that first throw go (5:28)? It looked so effortless when you threw...
It was effortless but also turned over pretty hard. Not sure how far. Haha. I feel like you have asked me that question before...🤔
So do I tighten up my arm to power through or should my arm be loose?
Loose!!!
Algo help - rocking robots excellent - beep beep
Is it possible to throw too hard? I always seem to want to rip it because it’s easier than remembering the 37 steps it takes for a successful throw. Would throwing from a standstill and doing baby throws help? I want to feel what it feels like to rip a 350 footer!
Our next video is for you. But to answer your question, yes it is possible to throw too far
@@OverthrowDiscGolf Throwing too hard. Not, unfortunately, too far. Thanks for the upcoming video and will be looking into Patreon for future form review. I know your videos will sink in soon! Awesome work.
Is that the same field foundation uses??🤔
Correct
What “Wide Rail” at 3:30 do you speak of?
It's what Paul Mcbeth does. Where the disc is wide during the backswing, swings narrow into the chest, and then out wide again to release.
How much for one-on-one coaching? How does that work if we live in a different city?
Virtual coaching for non locals is done through our Patreon. That link is in the description
So it’s not necessary too keep the disc flat in the reach back?? I’m confused now lol.
Nope. Simon, GG, and a bunch of guys actually get the disc vertical.
@@OverthrowDiscGolf does that aid in speed/power?
@@austintessnear4307 I think it helps keep the wrist loose and makes you throw the back edge of the disc. Helps you feel snap and spin a little better perhaps but I can’t say that it for sure adds power.
Do you have a tennis channel too?
Nope. That space is probably a bit saturated
Cough cough thats impressive lol 😊😅
This guy proves how terrible all the other pros and other teachers are at actually teaching someone what to do. Everyone else says do this and do that, ok, well how the hell do you DO it. This guy shows you.
: )
:)
I was told my high elbow was bad and everything should be lower :( shoulda kept it as it was
Someone should tell Paul to lower his elbow...
how do i throw anhyzers
Lean back. We also have a video on angle control.
@@OverthrowDiscGolf Oh, I just fee llike I get 0 power when i lean back for some reason
My whole problem from the get go is everyone is different and for him to point out that he has a “natural” anhyzer is just not sitting well. Definitely points in here that you can use in your game but everyone is different. You just gotta play with what you feel is right.
Your problem is that I used myself as an example of being different?
You make great videos. But the 1 thing I can give advice on, is to stop listening to Danny Lindahl, why? Because I have been able to prove through the use of physics that kinetic motion doesn't apply to arms arms use fluid motion which mimics a whip more
Thank you Michael J. Fox .
You’re welcome
