    Keeping that hip up is one of the 47 most important things to focus on while you're driving.

    Will watch this after work! Played a round yesterday with some friends (they're good, I'm bad) and I kept throwing too high and nose up, they noticed my reach back always started low and outwards away from my body and it makes me pull up at the end of my swing, just can't keep the nose down. Don't want to quit because it's so much fun, I just suuuuuck

      Even pros throw nose up sometimes and some took years of practice to not throw nose up. Practice practice practice! Do field work on just the nose angle release.

      Also, you may want to look into your grip. A classic power grip can be problematic for nose up throws. Try a 3 finger power grip with your pinky free from the grip.

    • @stephenshuka2360

      @@pathape I could not recommend this more. This was a quick fix for my nose-up issues and I’ve been able to toy around with other grips/ switch back to a four finger grip since. But dropping the pinky and using 3 fingers was an amazing help.

      What really helped me was thinking about keeping my palm up through the whole throw (you don't really, but it helps to think of it this way). Supinating my wrist really helps me keep the nose down.

      Paul Uli had a great clinic video from a few years ago that helped me learn reach back and pull through to help my solve my nose up issues check it out. You’re likely creating to much of a reach back causing more movement this causing more room for error. He breaks it down really well how to load up with out truly reaching back.

    Cool vid, nice to see how you're breaking things down. I'm gonna hit my net today and see what I can do! This might be an interesting observation about the forward hip being up and the crow hop to keep it up a bit, I noticed that GG will often put his front foot down toe first which not only helps keep that hip up, but if you're in an athletic position it seems to help initiate getting the back hip around faster.

  • @keyelectric91

    Simon says the lead foot points backwards a little on the last step when planted actually he said the farther he throws the more he points the lead foot back. The stagger is good and the hip up up down up I'll have to try.

    The crazy thing is most of the pros who throw insane distance didn't have any youtube videos to watch, yet they figured it out by themselves or with coaches. GG says him and his brothers just went to the field all the time and just threw and threw and got farther and farther, how he (and other old pros) got so good on their own boggles my mind

    Tried this during my round last night and this morning. Makes stepping out on the last/stagger step make much more sense and it’s easier to move the disc along a smooth plain. I find I’m focusing so much on my hip I’m not reaching back as far and not coming through as fast but still getting (slightly)more distance. A lot to work on. My anhyzer shots have suffered a little as It does add a little bit more of a “natural” hyzer to my throw. Still not really following through “up” as much as I’d like but am looking forward to working on it in the field with some slower discs. Great video!

    I think if you're coming out of the x-step correctly, i.e. smooth step in time and making sure your foot is closed to the target, the hip movement comes quite naturally. Even without a big step, making sure the step takes as long to fall as a big step ensures the hip falls into the coil position.

    From what I've seen most pros don't crow hop (SOME do though). In my experience, if you have the flexibility, skip it. It will really just become another unnecessary varible in your throw. It might not be so bad on a normal drive, but now think have a crow hop will complicate things in a downhill, uphill or sidesloped runup.
    Another thing, which I am sure you are going to skip until you get the hip part right, is the off arm. Not even doing anything special with it, but just keeping it closer to your side makes a lot of difference! Hope to see you improve and play some real big tourneys soon

    • @BodanzaDiscGolf
      @BodanzaDiscGolf  Рік тому +2

      agree on the crow hop, I'm not doing it or planning on it. honestly the ideal is to get to 475-500+ of distance and then be able to throw essentially every shot at 80% power or less so definitely don't need the extra hop but keeping everything grounded

    • @vattten
      @vattten Рік тому +1

      @@BodanzaDiscGolf I was going through similar changes to what you're now a month ago and agree of that philosophy aswell. I am personally seeing around 450 golf distance atm, still got some off-arm timing left to hit perfectly, but I am getting there! Good luck to you, you got 475-500 in a couple of months for sure!

    I figured the same thing, I was doing that was the way I started facing the basket. Now when I play I start sideways and do my run up. The major problem now is just keeping the arm/shoulder up on the driving hand and tucked back not out at a 90% angle sometimes when I am driving as this loses 20--25% of the power I was using before this fix. It was watching pro players and seeing some start facing sideways on the run up from the start to fix this problem of being overturned I had when coming back in late 2015 after not really playing since 2009. Now I do not really play since 2019--2020 but when I do, I line up sideways. I think I was doing this before in 2000's and facing more forward in some short fairway/long midrange type shots so I could still go harder on the shot and not worry about finding proper speed for the shot as closely.

      The hop in X-step if doing everything right can help with gaining speed or a tripping issue if you have such a one when doing the fast style X--step. I see when watching pro players the Japanese and few other Asian players they tend to have the hop in the X--step when playing and get amazing distance for the size of the player. I saw a Video of worlds of the Pro Players when they did that in Emporium Kansas in 2010's and filmed the drives of every player and the distance on the one monster diving hole.

    • @michaelcushman
      @michaelcushman Рік тому +7

      However, it is a different style. There are two methods at the extremes, with many players in between.
      Overthrown promotes the counterbalance hip-sway method. The front hip does much of the work, strong rotational energy.
      Slingshot uses linear force created by the rear leg and hip, with a strong disassociation between rear hip and the shoulders to slingshot the arm.
      If you dont realize they are different styles, you will find the advice from each conflicting and confusing.

    This makes a ton of sense. I have been consistently throwing 450 ft, but feel like I’m doing something wrong to not be able to go +500 consistently. Yes 450 is great distance, but I am 6’7 and know there is a lot left in the tank. Thanks for the video, definitely going to work on keeping my hips up.

      Awesome! You defintiely got more in the tank!! If I do (at 5'6 throwing around 410), you definitely do! As my distance grows you better get 100+ ft ahead ;)

    Have you looked at any Sling Shot Disc Golf content? I feel like it's complimentary to Overthrow. Those two channels have done more for me than anything else.

    Even from my first day disc golfing, I didn't like the x-step. I knew it sounds simple, but isn't. So I've ALWAYS just done standstill. Once it warms up again, my shoulder (had surgery) should be ready for me to fix all my errors and try to learn things like this. I'll keep this video in mind in the future. Appreciate it.

      I've noticed people that dont feel comfortable with using an x step a lot of time think they have to move their feet fast through the x step or are way too worried about reaching back. I don't think people should actively reach back and the x step should be slowish and under control. Also, try throwing upshots or low power throws with a short x step. Standstill throws can create bad habits. Usually, it creates problems with using way too much arm and flexing the arm too much. The arm needs to be loose and whippy and the power comes from elastic energy and weight transfer.

    Thank you for this info. The explanation was one that finally made sense for me. I teach baseball players to hit and nobody had ever put together a good explanation. I tried this out yesterday and while some of the releases were inconsistent, the form was great and when I hit it right everything was so easy and effortless.

    Had to stop watching as soon as you mentioned Josh. I can't take someone serious who has a horrible form and everyone calls a "Coach"

      He doesn’t pretend to be a pro, he watches what pros do and translates that into drills people can do to learn that
